By Mila Lira Last week, the Pinal County Community College District Governing Board met at the Signal Peak Campus for their monthly meeting in a packed room full of concerned faculty, staff and Pinal County residents. The October meeting had a bit of twist to it as the faculty, technical and maintenance constituency staff groups of CAC voiced their recent votes of no confidence in the current college President Dennis Jenkins during his report to the board. Board President Gladys Christensen explained during the meeting that they

would take comments from the public regarding their concerns but asked that staff not read letters that were already submitted to the board. She indicated that the board had read all of the letters prior to the meeting. Several members of the staff spoke publicly of their concerns that the college is not being led in the right direction. Many of the comments made by staff addressed accusations of the President being a tyrant to work with, unfair hiring and firing practices, numerous violations with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and

Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) for the disposal of chemicals in the science and chemistry departments at CAC. Several staff members and residents of Pinal County expressed concerns that the college was in jeopardy of losing their North Central Accreditation. There were a few comments of support for President Jenkins: one comment was from a staff member and the other was from a resident of the City of Maricopa. Following the public comments during the open meeting the board adjourned to an executive session. The Board remained in

Staff votes ‘No Confidence’ in CAC President; Board to investigateExecutive Session for several hours. Upon returning to open session the board made a resolution to begin an investigation into the allegations. In the resolution the board made it clear that they have full confidence and support in the President. The resolution also stated that the board is not comfortable that they have all the facts on the allegations and they have asked Jim Kimsey to conduct a complete investigation into the matters. The investigation will come with limitations and specific direction from the board as addressed in the resolution. The investigation won’t question the qualifications of the President the board stated that they have already addressed those concerns. The investigation will not look into any allegations that have been made that occurred prior to Jenkins becoming the current President at CAC, and the investigation will only be on the alleged policy violations. In the resolution the board expressed their faith in Kimsey to conduct the investigation. The board added extra requirements that Kimsey must meet in the investigation: Kimsey will work on the investigation

full time and will be released from his current duties, his supervisory position with the President will be severed immediately, he will be allowed to choose his own support staff, and he will meet regularly with the Presidents of the constituency

group presidents. Kimsey was also empowered to make those administrative decisions and take actions he deems are in the best interest of the college for the furtherance of this investigation. The investigation was set to begin on Monday, Oct. 24.

By John Hernandez On Saturday, Oct. 29, many of Southern Arizona’s finest runners will be competing in the 29th Annual Oracle Run. The Oracle Run is one of the toughest runs in the southwest. The 10 K (6.2 miles) course begins on Mount Lemmon Road near Huntington Chiropractic and ends at the Acadia Ranch Museum. The runners will travel over hilly terrain through the winding rural roads of Oracle. There is also a 1 mile fun run/walk and walkers are welcome to walk the 10 K

course in its entirety. Last year there were more than 200 runners participating. The overall men’s winner last year was Ian Johnson with a time of 34:43. Tia Aceta was the women’s overall first place finisher in a time of 41:01. Hopefully they will be back to defend their titles. The race is part of The Running Shop Grand Prix series of races put on by the Southern Arizona Roadrunners (SAR). SAR is a non-profit organization that promotes health and fitness through running and walking events. Race Director Darrel

Annual Oracle Run set for SaturdayKlesch will welcome the runners with his usual “Hills R Us” humor and spirit. He will also be the

master of ceremonies at the awards presentation. Some of the proceeds from the Oracle Run go to the

Oracle Historical Society. Come and watch the race or participate in the run/walk.

The Halloween/Dia de los Muertos themed run is one of the oldest continuous runs in the state.

Miner swimmers traveled to a swim meet at Canyon State Academy on Tuesday, Oct. 18, to compete against seven other schools. Since the meet was a state qualifying meet and most likely the last chance for swimmers to qualify for the State Championship Meet, the team’s primary goal was to get the relay teams qualified. The Girls 200 Freestyle Relay team of Nicole Primero-Predgo, Amara Apuron, Jazelle Sanchez

and Cierra Austin swam a time of 2:01.36 which was good enough to achieve the provisional qualifying time by more than a second. All four swimmers were in great form setting a new school record in the process. The same girls had also set a school record in the 200 Medley Relay earlier in the meet. The Boys swimmers also had hopes of achieving qualifying times at the meet. The 200 Medley

Miner Swimmers hit state qualifying times at Canyon State Swim Meet

Relay team of Jordan Peasley, Wayne Newman, Martin Seballos and PJ Mortensen swam a time of 1:59.79 narrowly missing the qualifying time of 1:59.41 by a fraction of a second. The same boys on the 200 Freestyle Relay swam a 1:45.15 missing the qualifying time of 1:43.12 by a couple of seconds. Coaches were pleased that the relays did so well. In a meet with eight teams competing, Miner relays did very well. Coach Alex Gort was delighted that the Boys Miners finished second in all three relays at the meet. “The only team able to beat our relays (on the boys side) was a much larger team from Prescott High School,” he said. Coach Melissa Joliat was

excited to see the Girls hit the State Qualifying time. “It is great to see all the hard work pay off,” she said. Final Scores for the Boys Meet were as follows: Prescott High School 180, Poston Butte 89, Canyon State Academy 87, San Manuel 75, Florence 42, Coolidge 37, Mountain Pointe 15 and Phoenix Christian 8. Final Scores for the Girls Meet were as follows: Prescott High School 148, Poston Butte 105, Coolidge 86, Florence 80, San Manuel 54 and Phoenix Christian 32. Later in the week, the Miner Swim team found out that they have been invited to a qualifying meet for 1A, 2A and 3A Schools on October 29 at Phoenix Country Day School.

By Mila Lira Recently the Arizona Water Company advertised that it was requesting a water rate increase as required by the Arizona Corporation Commission. This rate increase will affect customers in Apache Junction, Superior, Miami, Bisbee, Sierra Vista, San Manuel, Oracle, Winkelman and SaddleBrooke Ranch. In its application and notice of hearing, Arizona

Water is requesting a $5,268,560 increase in revenue which is a 25.68% increase. Arizona Water is requesting this increase to allow the company to fund the consolidation of the Bisbee and Sierra Vista water system into the Cochise Water System and also consolidate the San Manuel, Oracle and Saddlebrooke Ranch water system into the Falcon Valley water district. The consolidation of these

districts will allow for all the residential and commercial rates to be at the same rate. Its request, if approved, will allow the company to renew the arsenic cost recovery mechanism (ACRM) for the Sedona and Eastern group water systems. The eastern group water system serves the areas around Apache Junction and Superior. This mechanism allows the company to fund the improvements to the arsenic

removal systems that is required by law. The current ACRM will expire in the coming year. Arizona Water Company is also requesting to implement a Distribution System Improvement Charge (DSIC). Joseph Harris Vice President and Treasurer explained that the charge is necessary to cover the costs of the Arizona Water Company to construct a surface water treatment system. The surface water

treatment system is needed to treat ground water before it is introduced in the water system. This plant will be constructed in the Eastern Group water system and will be used to treat the allocation of Central Arizona Project water that the company has acquired through a purchase. Customers can receive a copy of this application from the Arizona Water Company’s corporate offi ces located at 3805 North Black Canyon

Highway, Phoenix, AZ 85015 or from the Arizona Corporation Commission Docket Control Center online at www.azcc.gov using the e-docket function. The commission will hold a hearing on this matter on May 14, 2012 in Hearing Room No. 1 at the Corporation Commission’s offi ces at 1200 West Washington Street, Phoenix. Oral public comments will be taken on the fi rst day of the hearing.

Arizona Water Company requests water rate increase

By Mila Lira The Pinal County Board of Supervisors recently approved a new redistricting map that will affect all residents in Pinal County. The Copper Corridor will see a few changes but for the most part the region remains intact with only the southernmost part of the region being moved into a new district. The 2010 Census numbers showed that the population of Pinal County is at 375,770 residents. Because of this population increase, the county is required by law to add two new supervisor districts. Pinal County Elections Director Steve Kiser explained to the board that he had conducted nine different public meetings throughout the county to get feedback from the public and that the county provided opportunity for residents to submit their comments on the proposed redistricting maps online. Originally there were three map options available for public comment. After the public comment meeting and review of the online comment submissions, map three was the most agreed upon by the public. Residents in Coolidge, Queen Valley, Queen Creek and San Tan Valley made several requests and most of those requests were able to be met by modifying map 3 into map 3A. Map 3A was approved by the Board of Supervisors and will be submitted to the US Department of Justice. The Department of Justice has 60 days to review the map and

Pinal County Supervisors choose redistricting mapmake sure that all redistricting requirements are met. “We hope that with all of our advance planning and considerations of the public’s concerns that the Department of Justice review goes smoothly,” said Board of Supervisors’ Chairman Pete Rios.

Map 3A creates the required fi ve Supervisor Districts: District One which has primarily been the eastern edge of the county affectionately known as the Copper Corridor remains in District One and includes Superior, Kearny, Winkelman, Mammoth, San

Manuel, Oracle, Florence, Coolidge areas around Eloy and all the areas in between. SaddleBrooke will be moved into the newly formed District 4 which will also include Marana, Maricopa and areas south of Eloy.District Two consists of Queen

Creek and San Tan Valley. District Three includes Apache Junction, Gold Canyon and Queen Valley. District Three includes all of Casa Grande and the Gila River Indian Reservation. Offi cials for the fi ve Board of Supervisor districts will run for

election in November of 2012 and the new supervisors for will take their oaths of offi ce in January 2013. For more information on the redistricting maps and to view map 3A visit Pinal Counties Re-Districting Webpage at http://goo.gl/623wi.

All the children who come to Kids’ Closet in San Manuel receive new wardrobes twice a year. Part of the wardrobe is a bonus item, a baseball cap and a belt for the boys and a dress or skirt for the girls. KC does accept gently used dresses and skirts that may have been worn once or twice and are still in great condition. Many times these items really stand out to the girls because they are one of a kind. You may have children or grandchildren who have out-grown such items. If you have any dresses or skirts for young girls that you would like to donate for the children, please call the SaddleBrooke Community Outreach Offi ce at (520) 825-3302 or Pat Ford at (520) 818-9434. You can drop the items off at the Suite L in Mini Mart Plaza or someone will be very happy to pick it up.

By Frank Smith The San Manuel Miners varsity football team tamed the Pusch Ridge Lions 36 – 2 on Friday night in Oro Valley. The Miners had not defeated the Lions in recent years but avenged the past losses in the newly found rivalry. The Miners’ defense dominated the Lions’ offense not allowing a single point – posting a shut out. The only points for Pusch Ridge came off a safety for the two points. The Miners’ offense rolled down field like a well fueled locomotive scoring 36 points. In the first quarter, the Miners’ first possession resulted in a punt after the fifth play of the drive. The Lions’ first drive of the night resulted in a punt after a quarterback sack by defensive linemen Daniel Quijada making it fourth down and 17 to go. San Manuel would make good on their next possession, rolling down field to the Lions 10 yard line from the Miners own 48 in nine plays – capping off the drive on the 10th play with quarterback Marcos Sierra taking it to the house for the 10 yard touchdown run. The two point conversion by running back Jared Gonzalez was good for a 8 – 0 Miners lead with 3:12 on the clock. The Miners drove 52 yards in 10 plays taking 4:04 on the drive. On the ensuing kick off, special teams men Adrian Torres and Phil Adami would combine on the tackle to drop the Lions return man at their own 26 yard line. Pusch Ridge had a difficult time moving the ball as the Miners defense stepped up with cornerback Jesus Torres making

a hard hit on the receiver for a one yard loss and defensive end Jonathon Croci dropping the quarterback for a four yard loss to force another punt after the fifth play. Now in the second quarter, the Miners would begin the drive at their own 25 yard line – moving the ball to the 45 yard line in two plays where the Miners’ running back was stripped of the ball giving the ball back to the Lions at their own 49 yard line. The Miners’ defense would take charge once again with Croci chalking up another quarterback sack for another loss to force the punt on a three and out. San Manuel’s next drive resulted in a punt after starting out at their own 23 yard line, Miner punter Josue Alvarez pinned the Lions back at their own 36 yard line. On the first play of the Lions’ drive defensive linemen Anthony Salazar picked up a quarterback sack for a loss, the next two plays went for a no gain forcing the punt on a three and out. Miner return man Gonzalez returned the ball from the Miners’ 35 yard line to the Lions’ 17 yard line to give the San Manuel the short field. With the Miners lining up at the Lions’ 17, Sierra dropped back on the first play of the drive hitting running back Vinnie Valdez with a short pass – Valdez would then spin out of a would be tackle and blasted his way into the end for the 17 yard touchdown. The two point conversion was good by John Ruiz for a 16 – 0 lead with 4:01 left in the second quarter. The Miners drove 17 yards in one play taking :09 on the drive. The Miners’ defense continued to dominate – forcing another three and out forcing the punt. San Manuel began the drive at their own 37 yard line, with Sierra scrambling to the 50 yard line on the first play – the Miners would gain only one more yard on the drive forcing a punt but the Miners were given new life as the Lions were called for a roughing the punter penalty, moving the ball to the Lions’ 35 yard line with a new set of downs. The first two plays went incomplete, Sierra would

connect with wide receiver Clark Montano on the third play down to the 10 yard line. The next two plays went incomplete again but on the third play Sierra called Valdez’s number – calling the same play he scored on the drive before, Valdez would catch the short pass and plow his way into the end zone for the 10 yard touchdown with :11 to go before the half. The two point conversion was good by Ruiz for a 24 – 0 lead a the half. The second half opening drive did not get any better for the Lions as they began the drive at their own 11 yard line after a good kick off by Miner kicker Anthony Garcia. On the first play for the Lions, the receiver caught the ball on a short pass – line backer Daniel Perez laid out a bone jarring hit knocking the ball loose with Quijada recovering the fumble giving the Miners the ball at the ball at the at the Pusch Ridge six yard line. The Miners lined up at the Lions’ six yard line. On the first play of the drive Ruiz took the ball for a no gain. Fernando Torres picked up three yards. The Miners were called for a motion penalty on the next play moving the ball back to the eight yard line. Torres would take the ball down to the four yard line where Sierra would call his own number taking the ball in on the next play for the the four yard touchdown run. The two point conversion was failed for a 30

– 0 lead with 9:22 on the clock. The Miners drove six yards in four plays taking 2:22 on the drive. The Lions would put together their best drive of the night – starting from their own 26 down to the Miners’ four yard line in 10 plays only to be turned away by the tough Miner defense on fourth down – coming up short for the the first, turning the ball over on downs. The Miners moved the ball out to the 45 yard line but gave the ball up on downs after 10 plays on a fumbled snap facing a fourth and one to go. The Lions did not get a drive going – punting the ball away to the Miners. The Miners began the drive at their 10 yard line and gave up the safety on the second play of the drive as Sierra was sacked in the end zone with 7:31 left in the fourth quarter. The score was now San Manuel 30 and Pusch Ridge 2. The Miners would have to punt the ball back to the Lions. On the next drive for the Lions at their own 48, Perez would step up big on the first play – intercepting a pass and returning the ball down to the Lions 21 yard line, once again with the defense setting up the offense for the short field. The Miners’ offense would once again capitalize on the turnover as Valdez would score on a one yard touchdown run after spinning off the pile and getting into the end zone. The two point conversion was no

good for a 36 – 2 lead with 4:46 left in the game. The Miners’ defense held the Lions in check the rest of the night to secure the 36 – 2 win for San Manuel. Offensively, the Miners totaled 288 yards, 217 yards on the ground and 71 yards in the air. In the ground attack, Marcos Sierra had 61 yards on eight carries with two touchdowns; John Ruiz had 53 yards on 10 carries with a two point conversion; Daniel Perez had 33 yards on five carries; Vinnie Valdez had 32 yards on seven carries with one touchdown; Jared Gonzalez had 29 yards on four carries with a two point conversion; and Fernando Torres had nine yards on three carries. In the air, Marcos Sierra went four for 11 with 71 yards and two touchdowns. Receiving, Vinnie Valdez had two receptions for 26 yards with two touchdowns; Clark Montano had one reception for 25 yards; and Phil Adami had one reception for 20 yards. Defensively, Daniel Perez had nine tackles, one interception and one forced fumble; Fernando Torres had 12 tackles; Jesus Torres had nine tackles; Danny Quijada had six tackles, one sack and one fumble recovery; Anthony Garcia had six tackles, one sack and one forced fumble; and Jonathan Croci had eight tackles and three sacks. Head Coach Steve Elmore said, “The team played well defensively. They did not allow their offense to score even though they had a couple chances. Offensively, there are things we need to work on, but overall the team came through when they needed too. We have a tough opponent in Florence this week and look to come out firing on all cylinders.” The win over Pusch Ridge gives the Miners a record of 8 wins with only 1 loss. San Manuel sits at #10 in the State Power Rankings in division V and at # 3 in Section lll. The Miners will have a tough challenge as they will face the Florence Gophers in the regular season finale. The Gophers post a record of 7 – 2 with a State Power Point Ranking of #6 in division lV and # 2 in section ll. Florence comes off a 28 – 0 win over Miami last Friday and will host the Miners this Friday night with kick off slated for 7 p.m.

By Frank Smith The San Manuel Junior High School football team lost 24 – 6 to the Miami Vandals in the first round of the playoffs on Oct. 18. The Miners were the higher seed as they played host. San Manuel had not faced the Van-dals during the regular season and were not sure of what to expect from Miami. Miami received the opening kick off and were forced to punt after eight plays. The Miners started out at their own 29 yard and marched down to the Vandals one yard line with key runs from run-ning backs Stephen Faulstich, Armando Lopez and Ysidrio Wasko – on second and goal from the one yard line, quarter-back Frank Renteria called his own number taking the ball in from the one yard line for the touchdown with 3:37 on the clock in the first quarter. The two point conversion failed for a 6 – 0 lead. That would be the only scor-ing drive the Miners could get going all night as Miami scored on the very next drive, taking the ball in from 59 yards on a touchdown run by Josh Durn. The two point conversion pass to Ryan Baker was good for an 8 – 6 lead with 2:05 on the clock. The Miners would take the ball down to the Miami 25 yard line on the their next drive – threatening to score until the ball was caught and fumbled with the Vandals recovering the ball at their own 15 yard line. The Vandals went on to score five plays later on a 45 yard

Junior High Miners lose to Vandalstouchdown run by Michael Denton with :12 left in the first quarter. The two point conver-sion pass was caught by Baker for a 16 – 6 lead. In the third quarter, the Van-dals struck again in six plays off a Durn 17 yard touchdown run with Denton punching in the two point play with 2:19 on the clock in the third quarter. That was all the scoring the Vandals as they held on to pick up the win over the Miners and move onto the next round of the playoffs. The Miners finished the sea-son with a 5 - 2 record and a trip to the first round of the playoffs – they will have plenty to re - load with for next year.

By John Hernandez The San Manuel Thrift Shop recently moved to 137 Eighth Avenue at the Elks Plaza in the suite formerly occupied by Radio Shack. Those in charge would like everyone to know about their new location and that they are always looking for volunteers and donations of items. “The thrift shop accepts almost everything but food

and medicine,” said Janice Rapp. “Come in and shop, our prices are reasonable and we have a little bit of everything.” The shop has many items including exercise machines, clothing, furniture, dishes, household items and many books. The shop is open five days a week, Monday – Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The thrift shop suite also

New digs for San Manuel Thrift Shop, Museumhouses the San Manuel Historical Society Museum. The museum has been open since 1999 and is dedicated to collecting and preserving the history of San Manuel as well as the Upper San Pedro Valley area. They have a very extensive mineral collection, a 6,000-year old arrowhead, antique office equipment, copper items, mining equipment, the original first voter registration roster from Sombrero Butte and other historical items from the area. If you are doing research they have catalogs of information and historical photographs. They also have a collection of books about the history of the area that can be loaned out. The San Manuel Historical Society is always looking for volunteers or new members. They especially would like someone who once worked for Magma or

or smelter stories they can share with visitors. The museum is open two
