Charles “Wes” Truman, 82, passed away Oct. 3, 2012 with Mozelle, his wife of 61 years, by his side. Wes was surrounded by loved ones present and by the prayers of those far away. He was dad to six, grandpa to 18 (plus many honorary grandchildren), and great-grandpa to four. Wes was born April 25, 1930, in Elk City OK to Amaritta (Bearden) and Amos W. Truman. He had many fond memories of growing up on a farm with his brother and sisters. Wes and Mozelle were high-school sweethearts at Foster High School (OK), and married on March 8, 1951, in Oklahoma City. Wes served in the USAF, graduated from Central State College (OK) with a BS in Education, and later received an MS in Education from NAU. He

was the fi rst in his family to graduate high school and the only one to attend college. Wes and Mozelle moved to Arizona in 1959 to teach at Lukachukai Boarding School and fell in love with people of the Navajo and Hopi tribes of northern Arizona. They later taught at Chilocco (OK) Indian School, Chinle, Payson, Tuba City, and San Manuel. Wes coached boys and girls sports, including football, basketball and baseball, at the junior high and high school levels. Wes impacted countless lives of students and athletes through his commitment to education, sportsmanship, and “walking the talk” of a faithful Christian man. Wes was a Mason for more than 30 years. Survivors include children Randy (Charlene), Curt

(Sally), Terri, Nancy (Charlie Ritchie), Carla and David (Jeannie). Wes was very proud that his children and grandchildren have earned 15 college degrees. Grandchildren include Christopher, Mark, Rachel (Neal), Andrea, Paul, Bill, Russell, Renee, Jacob, Daniel (Malorie), Will, Josh, Grace, Alyosha, Zhenya, Shawn (Jennifer), Joshua (Erin) and Anthony. Great-grandchildren are Jadon, Sebastian, Nikola and Owen. End-of-life care was provided by Hospice of the Valley; we will be forever grateful for their kind and gentle support. Services will be held Friday, Oct. 12, 9 a.m. at the National Memorial Cemetery (23029 N. Cave Creek Road, Phoenix – just north of 101) and 11 a.m. (followed

On Thurs., Oct. 4, 2012, at 9:14 a.m. the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported plane crash at the Smelter Wash near the San Man-uel Airport. The wash is located approximately two miles north of the

airport. When deputies arrived on scene, they located the plane, which had caught fire after crashing. According to a witness, the plane was being flown by its pilot when the pilot reported over the radio he

was having oil pressure problems and was return-ing to the airport. Sud-denly, the plane went into a spin and crashed into a canyon known as Smelter Wash. The 77-year-old pilot from Oracle was the only

person on board and he was killed instantly. The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office has identified the pilot as Max Wood, Oracle. The plane was described as a single engine Mus-tang II FB.

Whether you choose Origi-nal Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan – take advan-tage of Open Enrollment to review cost, coverage, or both for next year (2013). According to the U.S. De-partment of Health and Hu-man, Medicare offers: More Benefits: Certain preventive benefits – includ-ing cancer screenings – are available with no cost to patients when furnished by qualified and participating health professionals. The annual wellness visit allows people to sit down and dis-cuss with their doctor their health care needs and the best ways to stay healthy. Better Choices: Medicare will no-tify beneficiaries about plan performance and use it’s only Plan Finder to encourage en-rollment in quality plans.

Lower Costs: Average pre-miums for 2013 for prescrip-tion drug plan coverage and Medicare health plans will remain stable. People who are in the “donut hole” in Medicare’s prescription drug benefit will enjoy approxi-mately 53 percent discounts on covered brand name drugs and see increased savings on generic drugs. Open Enrollment is the one time of year when ALL people with Medicare can see what new benefits Medicare has to offer and make changes to their coverage. Pinal- Gila Council for Se-niors Citizens (PGCSC) has scheduled enrollment events in Pinal and Gila Counties. The Benefits and Advocacy Program is part of the Ari-zona State Health Insurance Program (SHIP). SHIP coun-

PINAL COUNTY, Ariz. – After serving in the role as interim president/CEO for the past year, the Pinal County Community College District Governing Board unanimously selected Dr. Doris Helmich as the next president/CEO of Central Arizona College. The decision came during a Pinal County Community College District Governing Board special meeting held on Monday, Oct. 1, at CAC’s Signal Peak Campus following a nationwide search. The process for selecting

a new president began in November of 2011 and included the formation of two evaluation committees - a search committee comprised of CAC faculty and staff plus selected members of the community and a committee featuring the five publicly-elected members of the governing board. The national search attracted 23 applicants from throughout the country. The initial screening process yielded 11 individuals from which four outstanding candidates were invited

Dr. Doris Helmich unanimously selected as president of Central Arizona College

by the committees to participate in local interviews. During the final stages of the search process, two of the four candidates selected for interviews removed themselves from consideration after accepting presidential positions at other institutions. The search committee conducted interviews with Helmich and Dr. Ralph Ford, the vice president of student services at Union County College in North Jersey. The two candidates also participated in forums throughout Pinal County. “Dr. Helmich has done an outstanding job as the interim president,” Gladys Christensen, the president of the governing board, explained upon announcement of the decision. “I believe the college will benefit from her experience.” Helmich is excited about being selected for the permanent position because she has a strong affinity for the students, the community and the employees who

Dr. Doris Helmich

make up the CAC family. “I think we have unbelievable students, talented employees and a unique opportunity to really make a difference in Pinal County,” Helmich said. “CAC is on the cusp of a great journey into the near future and I wanted to be part of it.” During her year as an interim, Helmich’s leadership has refocused the staff and faculty on the mission of the college that emphasizes student success and learning. Workforce development, job training, internships and experiential learning may continue to be priorities after further discussion with faculty members and staff. Over the last year Helmich has been instrumental in redesigning the college committee structure to align with AQIP (Academic Quality Improvement Program) criteria in support of accreditation. She also has worked diligently to improve internal and external communications that have bolstered employee morale and productivity while also engaging the community. Working with faculty chairs and the faculty senate

to establish collaborative relationships relative to the learning outcomes assessment and the creation of CAC’s accreditation document has yielded a positive impact across the district. During her interim tenure, Helmich inherited a myriad of construction projects that included the renovation of the Aravaipa Campus, the doubling in size of the Superstition Mountain Campus, and the beginning of two new campuses in the city of Maricopa and in the San Tan Valley. A native New Englander with roots in Rhode Island, Helmich joined the CAC family in 2001 as the director of student success and taught in the classroom as an adjunct faculty member. In 2004 she became dean of students and the chief student affairs officer, holding the title of vice president of student services prior to becoming interim president. During her decade at CAC, Helmich assisted in passing a nearly-$99 million dollar general obligation bond and creating university partnerships that include the University of Arizona Pathways, Arizona State

University TAG (Transfer Admission Guarantee),

Have you signed up for a Trunk-or-Treat space for Halloween? Thought

about what kind of treats to hand out or whether to dress up you and your vehicle for the event? Planning continues for

this great alternative to traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating. This new way of trick-or-treating is safer than walking the dark streets of San Manuel with lots of empty houses along the way. Everyone gathers in one place for costume parade, trunk-or-treat, food, a jumping castle, great music and lots of fun. There’s still time to reserve your spot. By Mila Besich-Lira Have you ever considered what happens in the local economy when a natural

disaster or other major ca-sualty strikes? If you are a business owner, can your business survive after all

Is your business prepared for an emergency? County leaders discuss preparedness

the sirens and community aid are gone? Most federal aid comes in the form of loans for busi-nesses and if a business has to close in an community that will mean a loss of services and jobs. Some businesses may not be able to recover from a major disaster. Business leaders and first responders discussed what would happen to local busi-nesses in the event that there are any major catas-trophes in the area at the Anthem Sun City Commu-nity center last month. The day long meeting was more than just a discussion it was a full table top exercise where each group discussed what they would need to do to ensure that their business and employees were safe in the event of a disaster. The table top exercises were based on the floods that affected Pinal County and the state of Arizona in 1983 and 1993. Those floods caused major dam-age throughout the state which had huge economic impacts. Onsite to help facilitate the discussion were repre-sentatives from the Arizona Division of Emergency Management as well as public safety officials from throughout the county. The participants read the three different scenarios which included the following sce-narios: imminent flooding, the great flood and disaster recovery. Each were three phases in a flood disaster and those in attendance had to begin planning for the emergency, dealing with the flood and then the steps of recovery. “Businesses that have experienced a disaster and have no emergency plan; 43 percent of them are never able to reopen

Pilots at the San Manuel Airport are excited by the addition of LED lights. (John Hernandez photo)

By John Hernandez On Oct.15, a runway light project will begin at the San Manuel - Ray Blair Airport (E77) in San Manuel. The airport will be closed beginning Oct. 15 except on weekends until the construction is completed. The project is estimated to take three months and once completed San Manuel Airport will be the only airport to have LED lighting in Arizona. There will be an increase in air traffi c fl ow into and around the airport at night. There are plans for the construction of more hangars and a pilot lounge. The runway lighting project is funded through taxes on the sale of air fuel. The increase in air traffi c could mean more people fl ying into the area and/or taking fl ying lessons. Parrish Traweek of PC Aircraft Maintenance Flight Services says that over 200 people have trained at the airport in the last fi ve years. Recently they had students from Florida and Southern California. Butch Theisen is a marriage and family counselor from California. He is retired from the Air Force and is taking accelerated lessons to get his pilot’s license. Theisen said that he “loves the airplane they use to train” which is an Ercoupe. “Lots of people that belonged to an Ercoupe owner’s club recommended Parrish. Theisen said that “Traweek pushes me pretty hard but does a lot of encouraging”. Traweek says the airport is getting busier. PC Aircraft is now selling locally fabricated airplane boarding handles. They are doing some aircraft maintenance and outsourcing much of it. Planes are available for rental as well as sightseeing/tours. Two airplanes are being built at the airport. A fi lm crew was at the

San Manuel airport to get runway lightsairport in April fi lming scenes for a movie when a pilot lost control of their plane on take off and bounced off of two planes on the ground. Fortunately, no one was hurt. He has two high school students that are taking lessons and will be able to solo soon once they turn 16. They encourage kids to learn about fl ying and aerospace technology. The San Pedro Valley Pilot’s Association offers a

scholarship every year for a San Manuel High School senior. Traweek would like the community to know that they can come out and watch the planes take off and land. The airport is also available for events and once the lights are installed night events. The community is invited to come out on Oct.13 for the Arizona Pilot’s Association Drive-In Fly-In Pancake Breakfast and Safety Seminar. There will

be anywhere from 20 to 100 planes coming in for the event. There will be a breakfast served by the San Manuel Elks club. Cost is $7for a plate, which includes pancakes, sausage, eggs, juice and coffee. Breakfast is served from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Money raised will go towards scholarships for graduating seniors interested in aviation studies. The Safety Seminar class begins at

10:30 and is free. Topic for the seminar is “Survival & Survival Equipment” presented by Howard

Deevers. For more information, contact Pat at 520-664-4812.

• Back Flow Testing • Septic Tank • Back Flow Testing • Septic Tank By Frank Smith The San Manuel Miners varsity football team made the trip up to Miami on Fri. night sinking the Vandals 54 – 0 in the Miners fourth shutout win of the season. It did not take long for the Miners to score in the first quarter as the Vandals fumbled the ball that was recovered by San Manuel linebacker Danny Quijada on the second play of their opening drive giving the short field to the Miners at the Miami 17-yard line. The Miners scored on the fourth play of the drive with fullback Colten Smith taking the ball into the end zone from the six-yard line for six, the point after touchdown kick was good by Adrian Diaz to give the Miners the lead with 9:09 in the first quarter. The Miners drove 17 yards in four taking 2:04 on the drive. The Miners defense would force several three and outs throughout the night leaving the Vandals in punt formation as a result of the stingy defense. On the next drive for the Miners, the offense would drive down to the Vandals eight-yard line from their own 30 in six plays only to fumble the ball at the one yard line giving Miami the ball back deep in their own territory. The drive would result in another punt for the Vandals,

than 100yds of offense. Offensively, we pounded the ball on the ground with big play after big play. John Ruiz, Colten Smith, Shane Kelly, and Andre Sierra combined for over 300yds rushing and seven

touchdowns. We enjoyed the win, but it’s time to go back to work against a good Benson team.” The Miners will host the Benson Bobcats on Friday night at Littau Field, kick off is slated for 6pm.

By Frank Smith The San Manuel Miners Junior High football team will be heading to the playoffs with wins over Miami and Hayden giving the Miners the third seed in their division. On Sept, 25, 2012, the Miners visited Miami and came away with a 14-8 victory. The Vandals scored fi rst during the second quarter on a 50 yard touchdown pass. The Miners scored on a six yard dive by Matt Franco with 1:47 left in the fi rst half. The touchdown was set up after Josh Sharp intercepted a pass and returned it to the Miami’s 11 yard line. The fi rst half ended Miami

8 –San Manuel 6. The Miners received the kick-off to start the second half. The Miners scored on a one yard run by Alejandro Camacho after driving 65 yards. Jose Damian scored the two point conversion to give the Miners a 14-8 lead. Coach Dave Jungbluth said, “The Vandals had a few opportunities but were turned back by a relentless defense, Antonio Gallego, Reuban Hernandez and Fabian Ruzzo did a great job on defense. This was a great win for us. This is the second week we came back in the second half to win the game. “ The Miners headed up Highway 77 on Oct.2 to

Junior High Miners head into playoff s with wins over Miami and Hayden

face the Junior Lobos and returned home with a 22 – 8 win over Hayden. The Miners jumped out to a 14 – 0 lead at the half after a fi ve yard run from running back Josh Sharp in the fi rst quarter and a four yard touchdown run from full back Matt Franco in the second quarter. The Miners scored again in the third quarter when

sharp broke loose for a 65 yard touchdown scamper down the left side of the fi eld keyed off the block from wide receiver Omar Tamayo. The Lobos scored their only touchdown late in the fourth quarter when the Miners inserted their second unit for some valuable playing time. Coach Dave Jungbluth

said, “We did very well, on the defensive side of the ball Antonio Gallego controlled the line of scrimmage. Hayden had some big players – we were not sure how we would handle them but we played hard.” The Miners will now take on the second seed the Pusch Ridge Lions on Tuesday Oct. 16 in Oro

Valley with a start time of 6pm. Should the Miners win they will take on the winner of the fi rst seed Eloy and fourth seed Miami, the game will be played at the higher seed site on Oct. 23. The top winner of the South and North divisions will meet for the Championship game.

and the Northern Arizona University CAC2NAU programs. She co-directed a task force to write the systems portfolio for the North Central Accreditation in 2004 and 2008, designed study-abroad opportunities for student and faculty exchanges with China and Brazil, and developed a family host program in the community for international faculty and students to raise cultural awareness. Under Helmich’s guidance, CAC has increased semester enrollment from 3,000 full-time equivalent students (FTSE) to more than 7,100 by implementing a student-centered approach. Helmich negotiated with colleagues and local businesses to create a college and career center that focused on annual job fairs, local job recruitment, internships and job shadowing. She also initiated the Summer Bridge program, a student mentorship program, online student services, one-stop services at three campuses, and a technical help desk that increased student retention from a low of 48 percent to a high of 68 percent, with some cohorts owning a retention rate as high as 93 percent. The program was awarded the distinction of honorable mention in the MetLife Foundation competition known as the Community College Excellence Awards. As the vice president for student services, Helmich was directly responsible for the following departments - recruitment, admissions, records, fi nancial aid, career

services, disability student services, academic advising, testing, student retention, TRiO support services, Title V Strengthening Hispanic Serving Institutions, the First-Year Experience program, student engagement/activities, the Customer Service and Technical Help Desk, Student Life, Judicial Affairs and Residence Life. Helmich arrived at Central Arizona College after spending almost a decade (1992-2001) at Bryant College in Smithfi eld, R.I., where she served as the assistant to the vice president of student affairs, as an adjunct faculty member, and as the institution’s fi rst health educator. From 1984-91 she was a public school teacher in Rhode Island where she also served as an adjunct faculty member at Rhode Island College form 1989-91. Helmich’s involvement in the community includes serving as the past vice-president of the Copper Corridor Economic Development Commission; serving as a board member on the SaddleBrooke Rotary Club and Saddlebag Notes; and serving as a past board president and board member of Latino Familia Initiative. She is involved in annual community fundraisers for United Way, Casa Grande Regional Medical Center, Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Domestic Violence Prevention, Vaquero Foundation and the Central Arizona College Foundation. Helmich is a two-time graduate of Rhode Island College where she earned her bachelor’s of

science degree in physical education in 1974 and a master’s degree in education in 1992. explained. “Of the busi-nesses that reopen only 29 percent of them will remain in operation two years after the disaster.” Those statistics are one of the primary reasons county

offi cials found it important to sponsor this exercise. One of the key things that was discussed is how businesses need to make a disaster plan in the event that something should happen. Business leaders discussed how they would communicate with staff and suppliers should they be closed down. The forum also provided resources for helping businesses to begin setting up their emergency plans. Some resources are available online at FEMA: www.ready.gov/business and through the Small Business Administration: www.sba.gov/prepare. The event was supported by Arizona Public Service, Salt River Project, Curis Resources, Biz Pro Servic-es, Future Forward Founda-tion, Holiday Inn Express and CARDF in addition to Pinal County.

treats, there is still time for that too; as well as yourself, lawn chair, lawn mower, broom or whatever else you rode in on. Just call 385-2337 ext. 1113 and leave your name and phone number, and the details will be given you by return call. There will be a prize for the best decorated space. There is no charge for participation unless you are a “vendor for profit”; then there will be a $20 fee. This is a great chance for non-profit clubs to make some money. You must be able to supply your own

electricity, if necessary. The gates will open at 3:15 pm and you must have your vehicles parked by 4:30 pm. The event will start when the parade ends, at approximately 5:30 pm, and vehicles cannot leave the parking lot until 7:30 pm, for the safety of the children. Mammoth-San Manuel Community Schools will be coordinating the Costume Parade uptown. The parade, led by the firetruck, will wind around the upper arcade and end up across McNab in front of the

Community Schools Office, where the category costume prizes will be rewarded. The parade will begin lining up at 4 pm. You must be in the right category and follow the parade to the Community Schools Office in order to be judged. Let’s make this a Halloween that the kids remember for the rest of their lives, or, at least until next year! And, kids – if you still want to go door-to-door

asking for treats, please remember to bring your flashlight and head for houses that have porch lights on. Safety is like chocolate: you don’t want too little; but there’s no such thing as too much.
