Gayle K. Perez inhaled her fi rst breath on July 5, 1934 in Chicago, Illinois, and exhaled her last on March 18, 2012 in Tucson. Between her fi rst and last breaths on Earth, Gayle accomplished much. Gayle was preceded in death by her fi rst husband, Edwin Soergel Sr. in 1975; son, Michael “Mickey” Sorgel in 2004; and her parents, Florence and Bert Leininger. Gayle is survived by her second husband, Ruben A. Perez; son, Edwin “Eddie” Soergel Jr., and daughter-in-law, Amber R. Soergel, both of Tempe; two grandchildren, fi ve great-grandchildren and a sister. She taught English and served as a guidance counselor in Yuma. She loved and was in turn loved by her students – she viewed them as a multi-hued constellation of wonderful kids with a variety of physical frames, percolating personalities and talents. Gayle and Ruben both retired in 1993 and settled in Oracle. In her new community, she helped

with the construction of hundreds of bookcases for Oracle’s children, stocked the bookcases with books and other learning tools, served the Pinal County Juvenile Court as a volunteer working with youth who were ordered to do community service, and visited with young women expecting their fi rst child to offer support and comfort. Gayle had an ingrained desire to continue to work with youth – her chosen way to pay her social rent. Gayle and Ruben sliced a generous portion of their time to travel, explore and co-author a new chapter. She had many friends from Oracle, Superior, Kearny, Mammoth, San Manuel and Tucson who loved and admired her. And the staff at Tucson Pacifi ca/Encore Senior Village loved and cared for her as a special friend, mother or grandmother. Gayle was a go-giver rather than a go-getter. She faithfully donated to medical research, animal and environmental foundations. Most impressive,

though, was her desire to contribute to the welfare of others even after her exit from Earth. In lieu of fl owers, the family asks for donations to Sigma Kappa Foundation (attention: in honor of Gayle Perez), 8733 Founders Road, Indianapolis, Indiana 46268. Or call 317-872-3275. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 21, at 9 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Parish, 505 South Avenue B, Yuma.

Editor: Last week, the Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution that asked our county constitutionally elected offi cials to

enforce the Hatch Act with their employees as we enter this election season. The resolution passed by a two to one vote.

Chairman Rios and Supervisor David Snider voted aye and Supervisor Bryan Martyn voted no. This “Resign to Run” resolution is really

nothing new to Pinal County employees. This Board, as well as past Boards of Supervisors have always insisted that county employees abide

by the provisions of the Hatch Act. The original Hatch Act was enacted by the Federal Government in the 1930s to prevent any

Letter to the Editor: Babeu refuses to join in enforcing Federal lawfederal offi cial using their infl uence to gain or disburse favors while they seek elected offi ce. The State of Arizona has passed a similar law under Revised Statutes §41-772. Pinal County Policy and Procedures 1.30.A, makes it clear that public employees are prohibited from being candidates for nomination or election to any paid, partisan public offi ce, or from taking any part in the management of any political campaign or recall effort. When performing their duties on behalf of Pinal County, employees must refrain from political activity while on duty or at public expense. This resolution was not targeting any county employee. This resolution is basically a reiteration of our county policy and procedures and we simply asked our elected offi cials to follow our lead. My personal thought is that the resolution is very sound public policy. Many, if not all, elected offi cials are recipients of federal dollars in the way of grants or other funds. Any violation of the Hatch Act gives the federal government the means to come to Pinal County and ask us to forfeit those needed funds. In other words,

TributeFrances Lopez Garcia

April 2, 1931 - April 3, 2012 Frances Lopez Garcia, 81, passed away on April 3, 2012, at her home in Winkel-man. Frances was born the daugh-ter of Genaro and Margarita (Rios) Lopez on April 2, 1931 in Hayden. She grew up and attended school in Hayden. She married Ralph O Garcia. They made their home in the Winkelman area where they lived their whole life. She liked to play the organ and sing with the choir. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. She was always there for people at a time of need. Frances is survived by children, Frances (Dennis) Chroninger, Ralph (Rose Ann) Garcia, John Garcia, Carol (Ramo n) Romero and Nick (Lisa) Garcia; two brothers; two sisters;

Frances Lopez Garcia

13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her be-loved husband. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, April 9, at St. Joseph’s Catholic

Church in Hayden with a Ro-sary recited just prior to the service. Interment followed at Mountain View Cemetery in Hayden. An online guestbook can be signed at www.griffi thmortu-ary.com.

Pinal County Policy and Procedures 1.30.A protects Pinal County residents and ensures that our employees are following the letter of the law. I am pleased to note that nearly every elected offi cial in Pinal County is on board keeping their employees within the law by asking them to follow our policies and procedures. I fi nd it puzzling that

Sheriff Paul Babeu will not sign on to this resolution that would ensure that his employees follow county policy. If there were a violation of the Hatch Act, his department would have a lot to lose when it comes to federal money. The Sheriff’s Offi ce is currently under investigation on this very point by multiple agencies. The investigations involve Cheryl Chase, a candidate for Supervisor, Steve Henry, another

Sheriff’s employee exploring a run for Sheriff and others in Babeu’s Offi ce. Why would Sheriff Babeu want to jeopardize vital public safety funding by not insisting his employees follow federal law? Sheriff Babeu has indicated that he has obtained an opinion that his staff is not subject to the prior or newly adopted county policy. If litigation is brought upon us, I will be on record with this letter

as someone opposed to the use of any taxpayer funds for legal fees. We have already seen one valuable county employee voluntarily retire in order to seek the offi ce of County Recorder in this election.

Barbara Kelly did the right thing by ending her employment with Pinal County in order to comply with our Policies and Procedures. It is vitally important that you as a resident of this great county are

served by employees who are doing their job within the boundaries of the law and to the best of their abilities. /s/ Pete RiosChairmanPinal County Board of Supervisors

At 2 a.m. last Wednesday morning, Pinal Rural Fire Rescue (PRFR) in Mammoth received a 911 dispatch reporting a structural fire in the Aravaipa area. This area is now part of Pinal Fire Rescue’s dedicated 911 service area. The five members of the volunteer fire department responded within a half hour to the scene and began fighting the fire at Carol Steele’s Across the Creek Bed & Breakfast. The beautiful Blue Door Casita had caught on fire. A group of guests had attempted to halt the fire with garden hoses but had to quit due to the smoke. Pinal Rural Fire Rescue had “knocked down the fire” as the Winkelman Fire Department arrived and aided them at the scene. The Dudleyville Fire Department arrived later and assisted with water support. The fire was contained and limited to the one casita. The blue door was not damaged although the ceiling was burned and there was smoke and water damage in the interior of the casita.

Fire in Aravaipa partially destroys B&B casita EMT Deanna Paine provided rehab to four of the guests. “Some of the family members had inhaled smoke but it wasn’t serious,” she said. One of them had a history of asthma. Deanna said she treated them with oxygen and made sure they were ok. She advised them to

see their physician the next day. Deanna provided rehab for the firefighters making sure they kept hydrated and did not have any breathing problems. A family was celebrating a birthday when the fire in the casita broke out. According to Fire Chief Bud Paine the fire started when heat from a stove

By John Hernandez Students from Mammoth Elementary STEM School visited Oracle State Park on Thursday, March 29. The fourth through sixth grade students participated in the Park’s Odyssey Program. STEM teacher Casey Egan said, “The kids had been learning about eco systems and what kind of

plants and animals live in the area.” The teacher received a pre-lesson and post lesson plan from the park staff. Students were each assigned an animal to study earlier in the week. At the park the kids split up into three groups and went on a nature hike guided by Oracle State Park volunteers. As they hiked, the students had to

Mammoth STEM visits Oracle State Parklook at the environment around them for what their particular animal needed to survive and point it out along the trail. The survival needs were food, water and shelter. The Odyssey program is an environmental educational program. It is a two and a half hour program of hands on activities that brings ecological concepts learned in the classroom into a real world context. The Oracle Park volunteers asked the kids questions and pointed out different types of plants that could be food for the different animals. They taught the students about scat and what it can tell us about what the animal eats. They answered questions from the students and made it a fun and educational hike. The hike lasted more than two hours. The kids then enjoyed lunch in the park’s group picnic area before returning to Mammoth. These students not only learned about the environment but they got some exercise and had fun.

It’s that time again! Time for the San Manuel Library’s Annual Book Sale which will be on Saturday, April 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a change in location this year as the sale will take place inside the BHP Conference Center (the old Community Center) right across the street from the library. There will be books galore available: children’s, romance, mystery, sci-fi, non-fiction, adventure, and other genre. You can’t beat the cost as all paperbacks are 10 cents each with hardbacks for 25 cents. A Super Shopper Special will be held from 12pm to 2pm during which you can fill a paper grocery bag full of books for only $2.

As well as our book sale going on during April we are also doing our annual donation drive for funds to help us keep the library running financially smooth. Our major project is to paint the interior of the library as it hasn’t been painted in about 30 years. We would appreciate any monetary donation you could make to the library and donations are tax deductible. San Manuel Library is not a Pinal County owned library although they are extremely helpful with financial, technical and operational assistance. The Library is an incorporated organization operated by an elected 5 person Board of Trustees. The Library building is owned and maintained by the incorporation

which is non profit. All maintenance and daily expenses (utilities, cleaning, lighting, painting, etc.) are paid by the library. Pinal County provides the library with one paid employee which is the library director. There are usually about 15 volunteers whose time and effort keep the library open and running smoothly. Library cards are issued free; replacements are $1. We offer copying and fax services for very nominal fees. We also offer public use of over 20 computers plus gaming consoles that are available or assigned days of the week. If you have not yet been to the San Manuel Library, please drop in and see this bright spot in the community.

Three generations of winning Sanchez body builders: Miguel, Waldo and Javier bring home trophies from Copper Classic. (John Hernandez photo)

Three generations compete, win in bodybuilding event By John Hernandez Three members of Waldo’s Gym in Oracle recently competed in the Arizona Copper Classic bodybuilding event in Sierra Vista.

Not only did they compete but all three returned with a trophy. What is even more astounding is that they represent three generations of the

Sanchez family. Waldo Sanchez who opened Waldo’s Gym 38 years ago had been

retired from bodybuilding competitions for a number of years before learning that his son

Javier and grandson Miguel were going to enter the bodybuilding contest in Sierra Vista.

Waldo had competed for 35 years reaching his peak in the sport in 2001 when he won in the Mr.

USA competition in Las Vegas and received an all expenses paid trip to Honolulu, Hawaii to compete in the One World United Natural Olympia contest as a member of Team USA. Waldo’s wife Olga also was a bodybuilder. They competed in couples competitions and did well. Olga retired from competition after becoming pregnant with Javier. Javier has been competing for 14 years in bodybuilding and has done well in competitions. For Waldo’s grandson Miguel, it would be his first ever competition. At the Arizona Copper Classic, Waldo took second place in the Ultra Masters Division

Alicia Bristow of Oracle has announced her candidacy for the Pinal County District 1 Supervisor position

currently held by Pete Rios. Alicia is currently a member of the Oracle School District 2 Board of Directors. I was able

to meet with Alicia a few weeks ago for a short interview. Bristow, who last year was a registered Republican, is now running as an independent. “I have always been a middle of the road person,” Bristow said. “I always voted for the person, not the party. I have seen that more and more people are not happy with either party. People are discouraged and the number of Independents is increasing.” If elected, she plans to make the office as easily accessible and transparent as she can. “When you vote, you are accountable for that decision and should report back to your constituents. It has been voiced to me that this is not happening. We’ve had a lot of cuts in state funding that has impacted the county. People need to assess what we can do without and what we need,” she said.

She believes that long term care of the elderly is one of the important issues that needs to be addressed by the county. Also, she says, taxes are high and people see a discrepancy in the value of their homes and their property taxes. Elderly care, AHCCS, long term health care, taxes and the need to be transparent about are decisions are important. She agrees with current supervisor Pete Rios that Sheriff Paul Babeu should resign in light of recent allegations concerning the Sheriff including abuse of power, wasting taxpayer dollars on frivolous items, posting semi-nude photos of himself on the internet and overspending his budget two years in a row. “The Sheriff should resign,” she said. “How you can be naïve enough to think your private life will remain private when you are a public figure and then think you can get away

with posting inappropriate photos of yourself on the internet is foolish. I wonder how it is impacting employees of the Sheriff’s Department and how the public perceives the office of Sheriff.” She would like to see more mining jobs in the Copper Corridor if the environmental issues can be balanced. “We should also consider other types of jobs,” she said. “We need to look at an economic plan involving technology. Bristow has a need to help and this is what drove her to announce her candidacy. “I have always gotten involved in the community. I have a need to help. I want to help. Most people sit at home and complain. I get involved!” she said. Alicia’s campaign manager is Corrie Majalca and campaign treasurer is Angie Contreras. The Alicia Bristow for Supervisor campaign is in need of volunteers to do the day to day office work such as taking calls, gathering signatures, registering voters and working her candidate’s booth at events. If you are interested in volunteering contact Corrie at [email protected] or call (520) 271-3714. You can also contact Alicia at [email protected] or (520) 241-1142. For more information about Alicia Bristow and her campaign for District 1 Supervisor or to donate to the campaign visit her website: aliciaforsupervisor.com. Alicia’s campaign office is located at 1995 East American Avenue, Suite 82, Oracle.

What is God doing abroad? San Manuel Assembly of God Church, located on the corner of Main Street and Schoolview Drive, extends a welcome to everyone to two services on Sunday, April 25, at 10:45 a.m. and 6 p.m., wherein Micaiah Ministries will share the news on what God is doing abroad. Kent Wilson and Todd Murphy will be sharing the Gospel and speaking about their ministry in Russia. Their ministry helps the street kids and neglected and abused young people. The name of their work is Restoration House. The work continues to grow and the young people at the house are beginning to show evidence of real change in their lives. God is truly touching their hearts. The ministry has just opened a girls house and the young ladies are enjoying their new home and all the opportunities available to them. A freewill offering will be taken at each service to help in supporting this much needed work.

San Manuel church to host missionaries

In October, the San Manuel Rotary donated more than 140 new dictionaries to third graders in the Tri-Communities schools (Oracle-Mountain Vista School, Sierra Oaks Elementary, San Manuel-First Avenue Elementary School and Mammoth-Mammoth Elementary School). San Manuel Rotary’s goal in donating dictionaries

to third-graders is to give each student their own personal dictionary to assist them in their elementary and beyond educational experience. Each dictionary was stamped with the Rotary logo, with a place for the student to write his or her name. In addition to passing out dictionaries, Rotarians spoke about the Rotary’s Mission

Giving them one of their own ...and Vision to help plant the seed of community involvement in the students. Andrew Madrid, Lead Teacher at First Avenue Elementary School, assisted in passing out dictionaries to his third graders. Madrid asked his students to sign their names in the dictionaries and gave them a brief lesson on how to look up a word’s definition by having them look up the word “thankful.” Students quickly raised their hands once they found the definition, and Madrid picked one student to read the definition to the class. The students expressed their thanks to the San Manuel Rotarians for their donation.

“Fortunately there was no wind,” said Bud. “Everything went really well.” This was Pinal Fire Rescue’s first response to a fire. Chief Paine was happy with their response time and the way the firefighters and fire departments worked together as a team. Bud says they need more

volunteer firefighters. If you are interested in becoming a firefighter contact Fire Chief Bud Paine at (520)465-5300 or [email protected]. Pinal Rural Fire Rescue is a non-profit volunteer fire department. They are financed through subscription fees and donations. (age 60 and over). Javier brought home a second place trophy in the Open Heavyweight category. Miguel who is 14 years old won his first competition, placing first in the 13 – 16 age group. Waldo said that his gym members were all excited about their showing at the Copper classic. Four gym members now want to begin competing next year. Waldo has a nine year old grandson that will enter competition next year as a 10 year old. His other son Manny may begin competing again. Javier will be competing again in six months in Las Vegas.

As for Waldo, he said he will go to Las Vegas but just to be a spectator. “I am not as young as I used to be and the training was hard especially the dieting,” he said. Waldo’s Gym is unique in that it is open 24 hours seven days a week. Members are given a key so they can workout when it is convenient for them. “It is good for people on shift work,” said Waldo. A membership is only $25 a month or $35 for a family of three. You do not have to sign a contract. You pay month to month. The gym is operated on a trust factor. Waldo’s Gym is located in the back of the Village Square building in Oracle.

Two of the Tri Community Special Olympians participated in the Coronado Area Spring games on Saturday, March 30, both bringing home some impressive hardware. Josh Smith, who is the son of Verdean and Bubba Smith of Oracle, and Eric Linthicum, who is the son of Barbara Linthicum of San Manuel, traveled to Amphitheater High School in Tucson. Josh and Eric participated in the Softball Throw and

the 400 Meter Race Walk. In the Softball Throw, Eric placed first place in his heat with a throw of 16 meters. Josh placed second in his heat with a throw of 25 meters. In the race walk, both men were in the same heat. They were out walked by the first place winner, however, they made it an exciting race between themselves with Eric pulling ahead in the last stretch to win second place. Josh received third.

They were excited to receive medals at the county level meet where traditionally they have received ribbons. The small but mighty team will be traveling to Mesa at the end of April for the State Level games which will be held at the Mesa Community College. Please note fund raising activities that occur in and around our area are now raising money to benefit the County and State level competitions. Our Special

Olympians benefit when they participate in those competitions. If we choose to do anything special at the out of town events, such as movies or dinners, they are paid for by individual contributions. For information regarding Special Olympics you may contact Nancy Ritchie 385-2372 or Special Olympics Arizona at 1-800-IWIN (4946). Their website is specialolympicsarizona.org.

Reay’s sets fundraising record The ‘To Infinity and Beyond’ campaign had a 2011 goal of $160,000 to support Arizona’s Children Association programs

in December, Reay’s had raised a record $179,438 in 2011. “Our amazing customers, vendors and employees con-

tinue to show that even during uncertain economic times, they are excited to support Arizona’s Children Association’s mission to ‘Protect children and preserve families across Arizona,” said Richard Couch, Chief Opera-tions Office of Reay’s Ranch Investors. Reay’s fund-raising efforts since 2006 have raised more than $656,000 for AzCA. Arizona’s Children Associa-

tion, founded in 1912, is cel-ebrating their centennial ‘First Century of Hope’ in 2012. For more information, go to www.arizonaschildren.org.

Letter to the editor ends with beautiful facelift for Mountain Vista gym

When Miner reader Molly Steffens wrote a letter to the editor expressing her disap-pointment with the outcome of the bond election in the Oracle School District, she had no way of knowing that it would end in a big donation and new paint job for the Moun-tain Vista School gym. An Oro Valley resident, Nancy Dill, read the letter and decided to lend a helping hand, donating the paint to help spruce up the gym. Molly’s husband Kurt, a member of the Oracle School Board, along with other volun-teers last week com-pleted the paint job, giving the students a “new” place to play. Molly said they will be making a special presentation soon, of-ficially thanking Nancy for her wonderful do-nation. (John Hernan-dez photos)

Spring has arrived in Southern Arizona and the warmer air beckons us to the outdoors. We have a wonderful event planned for April 14 - a “Love Shouldn’t Hurt” Walk! April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month and our Center wants to encourage the community to turn out and support this worthy cause. Donations are tax-deductible and will be used here at Family First for programs which educate parents and caregivers. We will be walking between 8-10 a.m., starting at the center’s office at 1575 West American Avenue. Our route will be 2.5 miles long. Raise $20 or more from friends’ donations and receive a free T-Shirt. Can’t walk? You can still

donate - and join us following the walk! We will be hosting an Open House from 10 a.m. - noon complete with refreshments. Our indoor center activities continue also. Our Earn While You Learn program is on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and Story Time for moms and tots is every Wednesday from 10-11 a.m. Material assistance is always available by taking a class. For further information on our services or the April 14 Walk and Open House, call us at 520-896-9545 or check us out at www.familyfirstpcc.org. SEE YOU AT THE WALK!
