Former San Manuel resident Daniel Renteria was found guilty of negligent homicide last Wednesday. It was the fourth trial for Daniel in the killing of James Marschinke and Richard Rue Jr. The three previous trials resulted in hung juries. Renteria was acquitted

of the charges in the killing of Marschinke who Renteria believed had molested his three year old son. The negligent homicide conviction was for the killing of Rue. Renteria faces a mandatory sentencing of 4 to 8 years in prison. No sentencing date has been set.

Daniel Renteria found guilty in fourth trial Renteria admitted to killing Marschinke and Rue on March 1, 2010 but claimed that Marschinke had molested his son and that Rue and Marschinke had been calling him and threatening to kill Renteria and his son. Six days after finding out about his son being molested, Renteria drove to Marschinke’s home and shot Rue and Marschinke after they allegedly came towards Renteria’s car in an aggressive manner. Renteria turned himself in to the police the following day. Natasha Wrae, Renteria’s attorney, argued that the killings

were justified because Renteria had been threatened by the two for six days and Renteria acted in self-defense because he felt there was an immediate threat to himself and his son. Deputy Pima County Attorney Mark Diebolt in his closing argument reminded the jury of what a reasonable person would have done if their son had been raped, their house burglarized, and they had been threatened with death. A reasonable person, he said, would have called police, taken their child for medical and psychological help, would’ve sought a restraining order and taken extra security

measures at their home. Renteria was being held without bond at the Pima County Jail after being arrested 10 days before this latest trial. On Aug. 6, Renteria allegedly delivered $60 worth of heroin to an undercover policeman. He faces charges for possession of a narcotic drug for

sale. The latest jury was unaware of his arrest on the drug charge during the trial. Daniel’s cousin, Ernesto Renteria was also arrested on drug charges but released on his own recognizance. Daniel allegedly delivered the drugs at the request of his cousin.

By Jennifer R. Carnes San Manuel has its open market. Triangle L hosts the Oracle Farmer’s Market. Catalina has the 77north Marketplace. But there’s a brand new stop on the “freshness circuit” – Margaret’s Garden Market. Earlier this summer Margaret Guyton began hosting a new garden market on the patio of her Oracle business on Saturday mornings from 8 to 11 a.m. And while last Saturday she didn’t have the market open, this Saturday she promises to be open with

lots of goodies for fresh food shoppers of the Tri-Community. “The veggies this week will be buttercup, zucchini and crookneck squashes, tomatoes, sweet pickles and others that might ripen by then,” Margaret said. She plans to have great breads from a small wholesale bakery in Tucson and sweet breads, brownies and cookies that Margaret bakes herself. She has raw mesquite honey and some of the fresh produce from the Smallhouse’s Carlink Ranch in Redington. Margaret’s daughter-in-law

Margaret’s Garden Shop off ers Ginger makes delicious mild and hot salsas and Margaret makes and sells jams and jellies. “The reason for my starting this market,” Margaret said, “is because I grow so much produce in the summer and winter that I needed a place to sell it. The store front (patio) is so convenient.” One of the more unique items Margaret has is the raw goat cheese from Dudleyville resident Crystal Foot. “She is one of only two certifi ed raw goat cheese makers in the state,” Margaret said. Crystal has three different varieties of goat cheese for sale at the market and plans to have the cheese available at the market every Saturday. “Sometime toward the end of September, Kelley Freeman and her daughters-in-law will be joining me with more baked goods, crafts and Kelley’s beautiful wooden segmented bowls which I’m really looking forward

to,” Margaret said. Sue Qeenan of Oracle furnishes the fresh eggs every Saturday for shoppers.

So why not head over and check out all the fresh produce and goodies she has to offer. You might be surprised at what you fi nd.

While I was there taking photos for this story, I purchased two of Margaret’s brownies, one for myself and one for my

By Frank Smith The San Manuel varsity football team shut out the visiting Baboquivari Warriors 59 – 0 in the 2011 season opener. The Miners wasted no time as they took the opening drive in for the first score of the night when running back John Ruiz punched it in from six yards out for the touchdown. The point after touchdown kick by Daniel Perez was good for a 7 – 0 lead with 8:39 on the clock. The Miners drove 50 yards in seven plays taking 3:40 on the drive. The San Manuel defense came up strong in the first offensive drive for the Warriors as the Miners forced a fumble on the first play of the drive with defensive end Anthony Garcia recovering the ball at the Warriors 14 yard line giving the Miners the short field. The Miners cashed in two plays later with running back Vincent Valdez taking the ball to the five yard line on a nine yard gain followed by running back Daniel Perez pushing his way into the end zone from five yards for the score. The PAT kick by Perez was no good for a 13 – 0 with 7:33 on the clock. The Miners drove 14 yards in two plays taking 1:06 on the drive. The Warriors began the drive at their own 22 yard line but were forced to punt going three and out by a stingy Miner defense. The San Manuel offense set up at the Warriors 36 yard line after nice punt return by Jared Gonzalez. The first two plays of the drive went incomplete. The Miners faced a third and 10 to go when Gonzalez sprinted 21 yards down to the 15 yard line where Ruiz took the ball in for a 15 yard touchdown on the next play. The PAT kick was good by Perez for a 20 -0 lead with 3:59 left in the first quarter. The Miners drove 36 yards in four plays taking 1:02 on the drive. The Miners defense put together a relentless attack on the Warriors quarterback forcing yet another punt after

After their win on Friday night, the Miner football and Spiritline members decided to extend their celebration. On Saturday, the teams united to host the first MAC-Miner Athletes for a Cure Run/Walk. The walk was to promote Prostate Cancer Awareness. It was held at the Fred Littau field early in the morning. There were 47 walkers that fought the heat and participated in the event. They raised approximately $350 to donate to the Prostate Cancer Foundation. The teams wanted to bring awareness to this “Silent Killer.” Prostate cancer is 100 percent survivable when detected in its earliest stages. Unfortunately, many families have been affected by this cancer. The Ahumada sisters walked in support of their father who has battled prostate cancer. All participants were given a t-shirt for their donation. As coaches we would like to thank all the participants, parents and athletes for taking the extra step to help bring awareness to a cancer that has effected many of our community fathers, husbands, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, sons and families. By Frank Smith The San Manuel Junior High football team will be a work in progress, Head Coach Jungbluth along with assistants Manny Yubeta, Bill Smith, Fernando Garibay, and David Yonkin feels this group of young men have the potential to have a good season if they

continue to work hard in the classroom and on the field. The Junior Miners are led by four returning starters in Michael Sanchez who is a 230 pound lineman who will play on both sides of the line, Kyle Yonkin who is a 218 pound lineman who will play defense and offense, Stephen

Faulstich is a 160 pound running back and middle linebacker and Armando Lopez is a 140 pound linebacker and fullback. Coach Jungbluth has been pleased with the quarterbacks Frank Renteria and Daniel Zazueta during practice. He feels both boys pass the ball well. Though Coach Jungbluth prefers to run the ball, he does feel he has the weapons to open it up and pass the ball. “We need to improve on our fundamentals each week, excel in the classroom so we won’t have any eligibility problems, and stay away from injuries,” Jungbluth said. “If the team can do these three things we should be fine. This team will be built around its defense; we will be physical and disciplined. The team will go as far as the defense will take them. It should be a fun season.” The Miners traveled to Hayden on Tuesday to take on the Lobos and will return home to host the Globe Tigers on September 7. All games start at 6 p.m.

Dear Friends and Family, Their little smiles and excited giggles are what made it all worth it. Every stroke of the paintbrush, every sore back and tired mind, every dragging foot and worn finger was all made worthwhile in their little smiles, their joyous laughter, their excited shrieks and squeals of delight. As the warm summer sun set over the little village of Kaspichan, Bulgaria, the tiny orphanage rang with the joyous sounds of a project completed . . . an art and music room that would bring joy, peace, and therapy to the orphans who called this place home. The project seemed slightly daunting as it began . . . there was shopping to be done, walls to be painted, and murals to be created. A room was going to be created in the little Kaspichan Orphanage that would provide a sanctuary of music and art for the 3-7-year-olds who lived there . . . and time was ticking as the project had to be started without delay. We had

spent the afternoon before engaging the children in art and craft centers and outdoor play, but now it was time to work. We knew it wasn’t going to be completely easy when we slopped paint onto the walls of one room that needed painted and chunks of plaster wall crumbled under our fingers and our brushes. But, we persevered . . . the teamwork of an amazing team was inspiring as we painted, created, assisted, planned, discussed and organized. Music notes were drawn on one wall, murals of roads and vehicles were drawn on another, furniture was moved in and shelves were stocked with a litany of musical instruments, art supplies, books, puzzles, flashcards, learning materials and so much more. We worked tirelessly, enveloped in a thick July heat, praying for God to guide us and sustain us every step of the way. As progress was made, the task seemed less daunting in our limited time at Kaspichan Orphanage. Before long, as we pulled together, we

were able to gaze upon a completed art room . . . filled with music, art, and learning that was guaranteed to nurture and comfort the orphaned heart. Soon, the children, with wide and curious eyes, were allowed to see the completed room for the first time. Before we knew it, the room was full of little, excited bodies . . . exploring the art materials, playing the musical instruments in a noisy symphony, and becoming enveloped
