Tydel Scott Ray, born Aug. 15, 1966, passed away Aug 5, 2012. Tydel was a resident of San Manuel since 1991 when he came to live with his parents William and Margie Ray. He was loved by all who knew him. He was great at making everybody laugh. Tydel left behind friends and family who loved him dearly starting with his fi rst girlfriend when he moved here, Susan Renee Keegan Ray, Lisa Waker and family, Jack David, the Pohl family, and his life long friend from Nevada, Mark Mattson. The Lowe family from Tucson, his half brother William Ray, Jr. from Maryland, his four year old daughter Olivia Ray and his last girlfriend Deanna Brunson. But the one who stands above them all is his friend Frank Howard who was there day in and day out until the very last

Dear Editor, On Wednesday, September 19, at the regular meeting of the Pinal County Board of Supervisors in Florence, the Special Use Permit sought by Verizon Wireless to erect a 150-foot cell phone tower in Oracle was approved by the three supervisors in a 3 to 0 vote. A cell tower owned by AT&T has existed near

central Oracle for a number of years, as has a second AT&T tower located adjacent to and north of Arizona 77 just west of town.. But the controversy over where to place a badly needed additional tower to support the cell phone subscribers served by competitive telecommunication firms

has delayed a third tower for eight years. Finally last year the logjam was broken when District One Supervisor Pete Rios facilitated an informal agreement between all parties to seek alternate sites for the tower, other than the one previously selected in the center of historic Oracle, and dangerously close to

the Oracle-Briggs EMS helispot, which serves the TriCommunity with emergency air ambulance service. The final site chosen by Verizon Wireless is adjacent to the existing AT&T Tower north-northeast of the intersection of American Avenue and Oracle Turbine Road, and over one-half mile

By John Hernandez The meeting of the Mammoth Town Council on Thurs. Sept. 20 was a long and busy one. Liz Tuck of the Copper Corridor Economic Development Coalition gave a presentation to the council about the Coalition and what they are doing. She talked about the recent grant writing workshop, the mobile visitor’s center, Business Success Center and the services they provide for businesses in the area. She invited the Town Council to send a representative to their meetings. Tuck also talked about Oasis which works with local libraries to provide computer skills education that is geared towards seniors. The Council will be looking into bringing the Oasis program to Mammoth.

Councilman Joe Brewer talked about a lot of theft in town and suggested forming a Neighborhood Watch program. He said, “The “Neighborhood Watch” signs can act as a deterrent and we can use any help we can.” The Council will discuss the issue with interim Police Chief McIntosh. A motion to approve a pay raise for the librarian and library aide was tabled pending review of job descriptions. There was a discussion about a culvert that runs underneath Highway 77 near the entrance road to Mammoth Elementary School and the Kids Closet. There is the possibility that the culvert will be closed by ADOT. The culvert is used by a number of kids to cross under the highway to and from school on a regular

basis. If it is closed, the children will have to cross a busy street where the drivers often ignore the speed limit. This could pose a danger for the kids in the area. The Council will be looking into this issue and may form a Save the Culvert Committee if it looks like there will be a closure. A motion approving a credit card be issued to the Town Clerk Patsy Large was approved. A Department of Liquor

license was approved for the restaurant Michoacana’s on Highway 77. A motion to approve the purchase of a business property located on Highway 77 was tabled for more information and discussion. The discussion mentioned that the building currently had two businesses occupying it and would be purchased for $145,000. Councilman Joe Brewer felt that now may not be the time to spend that

type of money when the town is already hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. Mayor Barcelo said the town needed revenue and the building could be rented out. It was mentioned that there are a

few businesses that would like to locate in Mammoth but no specifics as to what kind or by whom. The names of the current businesses renting the building and exact location of the building was not discussed.

FLORENCE, Ariz. – Many Oracle residents will be receiving better cell service thanks to a new antenna tower that was approved by the Pinal County Board of Supervisors. In the Wed. Board meeting, the Supervisors approved Verizon Wireless’ application to place a 150-foot

monopole northeast of the intersection of Oracle Turbine Station Road and American Avenue. Although the tower is owned by Verizon Wireless, other carriers will be able to lease space on it for their equipment, thus eliminating the need for multiple poles. Thanks to the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of Arizona (IIABAZ) and Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company the town of San Manuel is safer. The two insurance agencies awarded a $5,000 grant to the San Manuel Fire Department for the purchase of new fire hoses and attack held lines. San Manuel Fire Department’s hoses were old and worn out. The addition of the new hoses will also compliment the department’s new fire truck. They will ensure an adequate water supply from hydrant to fire truck to the fire. That’s the one Melissa Be-lote Ripley, the 1972 Olym-pic gold medalist in the 100 and 200-meter backstroke, and her Rio Swim Club crew at the McClintock High School pool put on this time of year. The kids last swam at a big meet back in March. Yes, they had won the summer swim league championship in July, again. They then con-tinued to swim an hour and a half daily after High School practice was fi nished. They were all healthy and eager to race. But how would they do? Most were in new

age groups since March. Now they were the youngest in their group. Well, rest easy San Manuel. Your swimming reputation remains unblemished. In fact, it was even burnished a bit. Your athletes all reduced their Spring swim times by sub-stantial amounts. Hard working Royann Es-trada (11), who just started swimming two years ago, dropped a whopping 27 sec-onds off her 100 Backstroke and about 10 seconds off each of her other four events. Darien Apuron (11) dropped 17 seconds off her 100 Free-style and also shaved about

10 seconds off her 100 But-terfl y and Backstroke. Her brother, Evan (9), the current State Champion in the 8 and under Butterfl y, is now qualifi ed for the 50 Fly State Championship in the 10 and under division as well as the Breast Stroke. To show he’s not a one trick pony, he dropped 20 seconds off his 100 Backstroke. He’s clearly becoming an all-round top competitive swimmer. Riley Stewart (8) was new to the group so had no Spring times for comparison but he turned in very respect-able times in fi ve events and received place ribbons in all of them. Tabitha Kellum (9) won the 50 Backstroke as well as lowering her times fi ve to 10 seconds in each of the four strokes and the 100 Individual Medley. Gianna Sweeney (11) de-serves special mention. She dropped 13 seconds off her 100 Back, 14 seconds off her 200 Individual Medley, seven seconds off her 100 Freestyle, and a whopping 19 seconds off her Spring Butterfl y. But most amazing is that she

reduced the Breaststroke time she swam in the 9-10 year old division at the State Meet in March by 11 seconds! This time qualifi ed her for State in the 11-12 year old division. Coach Gort remarked, “It is really unusual for an 11 year old girl to qualify for the State Championship Meet with all those strong and ex-perienced 12 year olds in her age group. For Gia to do it on her fi rst try having just turned 11 is something special.” Some-thing special, indeed; special and fast, scary fast.” Finely, I’d like to mention Ethan Kellum (6) and his dad, Bill (age withheld). Ethan got bored at his sister, Tabitha’s, swim meets last year and wanted to get in on the action. So he started swimming and has turned into a very prom-ising contributor to the Sea Lion Team. But just now, all is not sweetness and light at the Kellum household. Bill has pursued extra training and be-come a certifi ed swim compe-tition judge. He was pressed into service at this Rio Meet to judge for stroke technique violations. Imagine his dismay when he observed his own son doing the breaststroke kick illegally. He felt he had no choice but to disqualify little Ethan. It’s not quite, like the Abraham and Isaac Bible Story, but it’s certainly along that line. So the next time you see Bill Kellum, pause a bit and drink him in. You’re look-ing at a man of character and integrity. Hey, Bill, do you know anything about running a bank? Bill did get some karma later when Ethan won the 10 and under 50 Backstroke! The San Manuel Sea Lions Swim Club is primarily a summer swim program but operates year around for mo-tivated hard working children who wish to learn to swim and improve their swimming as much as possible. On Thurs. Sept. 20, 2012, Miner swimmers traveled to the Amphitheater High School Pool for a Swim Meet against Cholla, Walden Grove, Tanque Verde and Amphitheater High Schools. The meet would be a good test for Miners against four Tucson area teams. The Miners Boys started the meet off by winning the Medley Relay. Senior Andy Monfred got the team off to an early lead in the Backstroke leg, then Senior Wayne Newman extend the lead in the Breaststroke leg, Junior John Bribiescas (Butterfly) and Freshman Alec Newman (Freestyle) were able to hold the lead for the win. The Girls Relay would be much closer. Junior Amara Apuron (Backstroke) and Junior Cierra Austin (Breaststroke) would keep the race close as Tanque Verde jumped out to an early lead, and then Junior Nicole Primero-Predgo turned the race around in the Butterfly leg coming from behind and putting the Miners ahead. Freshman Cita Sweeney keep the lead in the final leg to give the Miners the relay win in a school record time of 2:11.44. Head Coach Alex Gort remarked, “Winning the (Girls) medley relay was a key to winning the meet, every swimmer had personal best swim on each leg, and they broke the school record by over 8 seconds - when we really needed it!” As is to be expected at a five-team meet, wins come at a premium. Wayne Newman was able to win the 200 Freestyle, but despite setting a new school record in the 100 Freestyle at 55.15, he finished second. Cierra Austin won the 50 Freestyle, and bettered the school record in the 100 Breaststroke by over 5 seconds (1:21.90) on the way to a second place finish. Andy

Miner swimmers win five-team swim meet in TucsonMonfred continued to show his strength in the backstroke by winning won the 100 Backstroke. Amara Apuron was in a class by herself as she won 500 Freestyle in school record time of 6:13.97 beating the nearest competitor by over a minute and a half. Nicole Primero-Prego was the only Miner to win two individual events; she won both the 100 Freestyle and 100 Backstroke. As the meet came to down to the final event, the girls would have to win the 400 Freestyle Relay to win the meet. The team of Apuron, Primero-Predgo, Sweeney and Austin was again up to the task. The final score for the Girls was San Manuel 59, Tanque Verde 55, Walden Grove 33, Amphi 25, and Cholla 3. The final score for the Boys was San

Manuel 50, Cholla 48, Walden Grove 38, Tanque Verde 31, and Amphi 26. Coach Charlie Woodhouse was impressed and commented “With all the non-swimming activities our swim team members are involved in I am truly amazed at how well both the boys and girls teams pulled it together for this meet. They contributed not only strong individual efforts, but put together those all-important relays that cemented the wins. This group is really coming together as a team. It’s great to see.” The Miners will return to action at a home meet on Wed. Sept. 26 at 4:00 p.m. and will be attending the Canyon State Academy Invitational on Sat. Sept. 29.

It did not take long for the Miners to score in the first quarter as the Vandals fumbled the ball that was recovered by San Manuel linebacker Danny Quijada on the second play of their opening drive giving the short field to the Miners at the Miami 17-yard line. The Miners scored on the fourth play of the drive with fullback Colten Smith taking the ball into the end zone from the six-yard line for six, the point after touchdown kick was good by Adrian Diaz to give the Miners the lead with 9:09 in the first quarter. The Miners drove 17 yards in four taking 2:04 on the drive. The Miners defense would force several three and outs throughout the night leaving the Vandals in punt formation as a result of the stingy defense. On the next drive for the Miners, the offense would drive down to the Vandals eight-yard line from their own 30 in six plays only to fumble the ball at the one yard line giving Miami the ball back deep in their own territory. together at the San Manuel Fire Department for a public presentation of the grant. Chief John Stanford opened the event by telling everyone about the history of the fire department, the area they serve, budget challenges, average number of emergency calls annually and other information about the fire department. He thanked the Independent Insurance

Agents and Brokers of Arizona and Fireman’s Insurance Company for selecting the fire department for the grant. He recognized and thanked Drew Newton from the Mahoney Group for notifying the San Manuel Fire Department about the grant and helping them identify the fire department’s needs in applying for the grant. It was Newton through the Mahoney Group that submitted the grant application. He then

introduced the other speakers and people who helped with the project. These included Joni Fairbrother from IIABAZ, Keely Henthorn, Fireman’s Fund, Lanny Hair IIABAZ and Michael Punches, Fireman’s Fund. The symbolic grant check was then presented to Chief Stanford. The San Manuel Fire Department provides fire fighting and emergency response services to the San Manuel Fire District. It is composed of a five member Fire District Board, 22 employees and includes two paramedics and 16 EMT’s. Thirteen of 18 employees are Firefighter I and II certified. Four employees are new recruits. In 2010 they responded to 300 calls, 2011 handled 469 calls and in 2012 so far 341 calls. The fire department has received a total of $174,625 in grant money since 2003.

The Cougars jumped out to an 8 – 0 lead in the first quarter when running back Sam Yankovich on short run into the end zone for the score with Michael Barriga taking in the two point conversion for the lead with 3:50 left in the first quarter. The Miners answered the call on their next drive with a Jose Damien 65 yard touchdown run down the left side of the field, the two point conversion was no good for a 6 – 8 score with 3:34 in the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Cougars scored again with Yankovich scoring on a 27 yard touchdown run, the two point conversion was no good for a 14 – 6 lead with 6:12 on the clock.

Miners would take the opening drive in for a touchdown in two plays as the offense set up at the Miami 48-yard line, Torres dropped back and fired a pass to Sierra for gain down to the Vandals 15 yard. On the next play of the drive, Ruiz would get the call punching the ball in for the 15 yard touchdown run, the two point conversion was good by Ruiz for a 42 – 0 lead with 11:07 in the third quarter. The AIA imposed mercy rule was now in effect, with a running clock after a team is ahead by 42 points. The Miners inserted several of their younger players to get some valuable playing time. The Miners offense continued to roll as San Manuel set up at the Miami 30-yard line after a 30 yard punt return by Andre Sierra giving the Miners good field position. Kelly got the hand off on the first play of the drive taking the ball down to the seven yard line picking up 23 yards on the run, Smith capped off the drive with a seven yard run up the middle of the line for the touchdown, the Diaz kick was good for 48 – 0 score at the 6:06 mark of the third quarter. San Manuel scored again late in the fourth quarter, starting out at their own 43 yard line, Kelly took the ball down to the Miami 43 yard line on the first play of the drive. On the second

play of the drive, Smith took the hand - off sprinting 43 yards down field for the touchdown, the kick by Diaz was no good for a 54 – 0 score with 5:18 left in the game. Miners linebacker Colten Smith intercepted a Vandal pass where the Miners would take over -taking the victory formation to end the game 54 – 0. Offensively, Colten Smith had four touchdowns, Shane Kelly had two touchdowns, John Croci had one receiving touchdown and Andre Sierra had a rushing touchdown. Defensively, Danny Quijada had seven solo and four assisted tackles with one fumble recovery, Richard Romo had four solo and one assisted tackle with one sack and a forced fumble, Colten Smith had three solo and two assisted tackles with one interception. Head Coach Steve Elmore said, “We played an all around great game. The defense was able to shut down Miami on every drive and hold them to less than 100yds of offense. Offensively, we pounded the ball on the ground with big play after big play. John Ruiz, Colten Smith, Shane Kelly, and Andre Sierra combined for over 300yds rushing and seven touchdowns. We enjoyed the win, but it’s time to go back to work against a good Benson team.” The Miners will host the Benson Bobcats on Friday night at Littau Field, kick off is slated for 6pm.

In the third quarter, the Miners tied up the game as quarterback Alejandro Camacho scored on a one yard keeper into the end zone, the two point conversion by Robert Franco was good to even things up at 14 – 14 with 1:03 left in the third quarter. In a series of fumble exchanges, the Miners fumbled at the Cougar six yard line but the Miners defense came up strong as defensive end Antonio Gallego dropped the Cougar quarterback for a safety, picking up the two points with 7:28 on the clock. The Cougars then kicked off from their own 20 yard line, Miners return man Jose Damien took the ensuing kick off down the left side of field for a 45 yard touchdown return for the score, the two point conversion by Franco was good for a 24 – 14 score. The Miners held the Cougars to pick up the win 24 -14. Head Coach Dave Jungbluth said, “We came out flat during the first during the first half. I was disappointed with our lack of discipline on defense. The defensive of players had certain keys and responsibilities that were not being met. The second half the defense played much better. Coby Stratton and Antonio Gallego did a great job containing their quarterback.Offensively we were having trouble moving the ball because they were bringing everyone on blitzes. Our adjustment was to go to an unbalanced line and attack them with quick dives. That strategy seemed to work as we were able to move the ball much better. I would of liked to pass the ball. The problem was we had a new quarterback who has not had much practice with our passing game. I need to devote more time in that area during practice. I feel fortunate to have won the game . Oracle had a bunch of good athletes that made it difficult for us.”

Central Arizona College celebrated the reopening of the Aravaipa campus in grand style with a community party. Wildman Phil and his critters wowed the crowd and those lucky enough to tour the Starlab were awestruck by the grandeur of the universe.
