Editor: For those of you who were not able to submit to the Pinal County Planning and Development Dept. your written comments - pro or con - about the proposal by Verizon Wireless to erect a 150-foot high cell tower in Oracle (at the intersection of Oracle Turbine Road and American Avenue), you have one last shot to do so. On Thursday, August 16, the County Planning and Zoning Commission hearing at 9 a.m. will include on their agenda this special use permit proposal. This hearing is scheduled to be held in the Pinal County complex ( Building F) in Florence. This commission,

composed of nine county residents, is appointed by the Pinal County Board of Supervisors. Each supervisor appoints three commission members from his/her district.. These commissioners - county residents all - are charged with conducting these hearings to allow all parties concerned to express their views on a proposal, such as this one submitted by Verizon Wireless. The members of the commission are responsible, after reviewing all the facts, and hearing input from the public, with voting to recommend to the Board of Supervisors a course of action. This could include approval, denial, or postponement of a decision. The

Letter to the Editor: One last shot to voice concernscommission serves in an advisory capacity only - the final decision is made by the County Board of Supervisors.

Remember this is a formal hearing. Your presentation will be recorded for the record, so be prepared to give it

your best shot. Remember the “Golden Rule” of a good public speaker: “Be Bright, Be Brief, and Begone!”

Editor: Our community has always been a tight family. We can’t be easily fooled. I’m taking this time to ask everyone to join us and get out and vote in the primary. This is the most

important election in the history of Pinal County Sheriff’s Office. You may hear Paul Babeu making excuses about his decisions. Well we are tired of his excuses. I have watched his

debates myself. We need a commander who knows what’s going on in each department. He uses the media to accuse candidates of wrong doing. We are a lot smarter than he gives us credit

for. I know from my own experiences since Babeu went after our own family. We are supporting Glenn Millsaps Jr. to be our next Pinal County Sheriff./s/ Peter & Jennie Sanchez

SUPERVISOR RIOS SHOWS REPORTERS AROUND HIS OLD

NEIGHBORHOOD

Editor: As you read this, your early primary ballot is on the way to your mailbox. I want to talk directly to the registered Republicans. Four years ago you created the problem of Paul Babeu, and now you are the only ones who can fi x it. We don’t often get the opportunity for “do-overs”, so please don’t waste this one! Four years ago Pinal County elected a sheriff with no experience and a proven history of lying. Since then, there has been an avalanche of scandals, on-going investigations, and embarrassing national publicity for our county and state. Besides the sheriff himself, his deputies, administrative employees, political friends and family have all become tainted. We watched him reward political allies and punish political enemies. He hired disgraced Chandler cops, destroyed the fi nancial health of the PCSO (and is presently lying about

it), and attacked anyone who disagreed with him. A federal program to distribute surplus equipment around the country had to be suspended because this sheriff decided to run a political and fi nancial scam. He destroyed a working relationship with a nationally-honored volunteer mountain rescue group because it wasn’t under his political control. He has deliberately lied about the level of crime on the border (which our county is nowhere near), the level of illegal immigration (lowest in years) and the level of border security (higher than ever before). All the while, he was campaigning for Congress, which was his ultimate goal, possibly using public, taxpayer resources (another ongoing investigation). When that fell apart with the revelation of his online sexual escapades, he was forced to “settle” for the offi ce of sheriff. And in order to make sure he has no interference, he has

hand-picked a “team” of offi ce holders that he can count on to do his bidding - supervisors, county attorney, even the Recorder, which is an absolutely non-political offi ce - that he intends to shove down our throats. Having four Republican candidates on the primary ballot will potentially split the vote, and Babeu could win. I’m hoping that won’t happen, but it’s not in my hands. Republicans, you have to fi x this mess, hopefully with the help of Independents who choose a Republican ballot. If you’re still not sure, ask your kids, or your neighbors’ kids. I’d be willing to bet there’s not a child in this county over the age of ten who hasn’t seen, and snickered at, the pictures of Babeu online. That alone – which was enough to knock him out of the Congressional race – should disqualify him as our sheriff./s/ Mary Desio

Editor: I was interviewed by the Arizona Republic about three weeks ago. I stand behind what I said, and I will again add my continued support of Chief Arnson. Pinal County is very fortunate to have a true Christian leader, family man and professional law man as a candidate for Sheriff. I am a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. I served as a sworn deputy in the 1960s for the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. I have been the Chief Judge of the Gila River Indian Community Tribal Court for more than 20 years. Most recently, I was the governor of my community for many years. In April, 2010, I hired Chief Derek Arnson. He was the first non-native to serve my community as Chief of Police. Chief Arnson put together a five year strategic plan which afforded our community with a more effective and efficient manner of providing public

safety. He is a man of great compassion and was instrumental in helping our community receive millions in federal grants; most notably, the building of a woman’s shelter for victims of abuse. Chief Arnson restored honor and professionalism to a police department which was rampant with abuse of power and authority. He held his officers accountable! In fact, several of these officers were terminated and placed on the Maricopa County Attorney’s “Brady List” for dishonesty and other reasons. One of those officers, a female, punched a prisoner in the base of the skull was he was handcuffed to the rear, all because she was mad at him. This assault was captured on video and was sent to the ACLU, FBI and other outlets, including AZ POST. The officer still has her AZPOST certification and is attending a local Phoenix law school. Prior to Chief Arnson’s

arrival, this was accepted as “status quo” behavior. Around September 2010, Chief Arnson informed me that my chief of staff and, now, governor of the community, Greg Mendoza, had come to him requesting that he (Arnson) hire his (Mendoza’s) college friend as a new police commander. This individual is and was a Gila River community member. Chief Arnson informed me that Mendoza has asked him, some three or four times, if he would hire his friend. I informed Chief Arnson that he was to have no more contact with Mendoza and that I would take care of keeping Mendoza from interfering with police business. I removed Mendoza as my chief of staff due to his interfering, not only with Chief Arnson, but with other department directors. Mendoza was later elected to the tribal council. He quickly ran and won the governorship. On October 31, 2011, I received a very disturbing phone call from

Chief Arnson, informing me that he had just received a phone call from Mendoza which was rude and unprofessional. Chief Arnson stated that Mendoza said to him, “I heard from a reliable source that you are not supporting me for governor because of my lifestyle?” Chief Arnson said that he informed Mendoza that he was very offended by his comment and that his sources are wrong, and that he is not supporting any candidate because he is not a voter in the community. He then went on to explain that he was not for sale and could not be bought and to tell Mendoza that any honorable chief of police will not be swayed by politics, but, rather, serve the people, not an agenda. This recent press release from my community is unwarranted and has harmed Chief Arnson. Currently, Mendoza is not making good decisions as governor. The current sheriff, Babeu, and Mendoza are personal friends. It is unfortunate

that Mendoza would stoop to the promptings of Babeu and shed such untruths upon Chief Arnson’s character. My community has now suffered, too, because of this false information. The Gila River Indian Community has never in the past released information of any kind, with reference to any employee or their employment status to the public. It goes against our sovereignty. Hindag, as passed down by our elders across hundreds of years, teaches us respect for all things, including the value of a promise, abiding by the law and concern for the welfare of others. This is a very sad game of politics, at the expense of a good man: Chief Arnson. Chief Arnson received excellent evaluations each year, and was an asset to our community; as he will be to our county. He has my vote! /s/ William R. RhodesFormer Governor, Gila River Indian Community

By John Hernandez An independent film company, Fuerte Productions, is filming part of their motion picture “Blessed Encounters,” in the Tri-Community. Fuerte Productions is based in Tucson and is owned by Alberto Ojeda. Ojeda is the writer, producer and director of “Blessed Encounters.” He also has a major acting role in the production. “Blessed Encounters” is a story of murder, revenge, redemption and second chances in life. Ojeda says that the Tri-Community is a great place to film and looks forward to working more in the area with different film projects. He said that the community has been good to work with especially Al Gutierrez and Sun Life Family Health Center in San Manuel. “Al Gutierrez has been real cooperative and helping to promote the area,” he said. “Some scenes in the film are being filmed in the Sun Life building and some of the staff will be in the movie including Al Gutierrez who plays a doctor.” Ojeda’s co-producer is Laurence Cripe. Ojeda and Cripe met at the police

academy in 1973. After not seeing each other for years, they found out they both had an interest in film and began working with each other. Cripe has been writing scripts for five years. He has won a few awards for his script writing. Cripe has his own production company, Cripe – Ulichny Motion Pictures. “The movie business is fun,” Cripe said. “We love doing what we do and get to meet a lot of wonderful people.” One of those people is Antonella Cassia, who plays the female lead Faith in “Blessed Encounters.” Cassia, a professor with the University of Arizona, says she recently got into acting and has been doing local theater in Tucson and has appeared in three short films. “I always wanted to act,” she said. “I saw the casting call for ‘Blessed Encounters,’ went and auditioned and got the part.” The character of Faith is an almost single mother whose abusive husband has been giving her problems. Through a chance encounter, she meets Alex Castillo, a police officer

who is dealing with the guilt of killing a young man who had murdered his Sergeant’s wife. Castillo is played by Mario Bedoya. When he is not acting, Mario is an entrepreneur. He owns Mozzo Events & Entertainment. Mozzo supplies DJs, musicians, dancers and other entertainers for events and parties. Other members of the cast and crew of “Blessed Encounters” include Amelia Ronquillo who plays Alex Castillo’s daughter Emilia, Victor Schneider, an electrical engineer turned cameraman and 1-year-old TJ Coulter who acts in the movie as well as helps out on the set. TJ has been acting in independent films and on stage for a few years now. He has his own production company Booming Brightly Productions and will be producing and directing his own films. Local people in “Blessed Encounters” include staff from Sun Life. Al Gutierrez plays a doctor, Natalie Ivy and Lisa Rodriguez play nurses attending to Alex Castillo after he is seriously hurt and hospitalized.

By John Hernandez Sierra Oaks School in Oracle started classes on July 30 with 35 students and three new teachers. The school is still looking for two more kindergarten students so they can start up a kindergarten class. The three new teachers are Sally Kelly, Kendall Wetzel and Kay Edwards. Sally Kelly is not new to Oracle or to teaching. She has lived in Oracle over 30 years and retired from the Mammoth – San Manuel School District. “This is the first time ever I am teaching in the community where I live. I am very excited about that. I can walk to work,” she said. She taught most of the

time in Mammoth but also taught at San Manuel. She is a graduate of the University of Arizona where she received her B.A in Education. Besides teaching at Sierra Oaks, she also teaches GED classes at the Aravaipa Campus of Central Arizona College. She likes the outdoors, hiking, and is an avid reader. Sally will be teaching fifth and sixth grade. Kendall Wetzel She attended Elon University in North Carolina where she received her B.A. in Elementary Education. While in South America she taught school for two years and met her fiancé Daniel Mendez. Mendez works for BHP

and his transfer to Arizona brought Wetzel out west. They have been in Arizona for two months. Wetzel started looking for work and got the job with Sierra Oaks. “I like it here, it is nice,” she said. “I love being around kids.” Wetzel likes to read all different types of books, working out and traveling.

She will be teaching first and second graders. Kay Edwards’ family moved to Marana, Arizona in 1952. She graduated from Marana High School in 1956. “Marana public schools were segregated then” she said. “Later I realized what it meant to live through that time in history.”

Edwards attended the University of Arizona where she received her master’s degree in Education Edwards believes that the teachers today need to be more creative. “Peer pressure is much greater today,” she said. “The kids have more distractions.” Edwards has been

teaching for more than fifty years, and has no plans on stopping any time soon. “I think public education has made this country great,” she said.” Edwards will be teaching grades three and four. “This is my first time with young ones,” she said, “I am going to end my career with a high note.”

By John Hernandez A group of women who love animals have started up an animal rescue organization in the Tri–Community. These women have been rescuing animals on their own for years but recently decided to pool their resources and knowledge to help abandoned, neglected and abused animals in the area. The women, Charlotte, Kim, Cher and Laura formed Tri-Community At Risk Rescue. They have already rescued over 50 cats and dogs and had over 150 spayed or neutered. Over one hundred

cats and dogs have been able to receive vaccinations with the help of At Risk Rescue. They have had many of their rescued pets adopted by caring families. Charlotte has been rescuing animals for 17 years. She has worked with animal rescue groups in Tucson and has learned from her experiences. “We want people to realize that owning a pet is a lifelong commitment,” she said. She explained some of the goals and the mission of Tri-Community at Risk Rescue include helping all animals in need whether homeless or

Animal rescue group busy in Tri-Community owned; reducing homeless, neglected, abused and displaced animals through spay and neuter and through increasing community awareness and to facilitate in educating the community about responsible animal ownership and to assist them with this. Tri–Community At Risk Rescue works with veterinarians in the Tucson area to provide low cost neutering and spaying as well as vaccinations. They hope to be able to provide micro chipping soon. At Risk Rescue also provides adoption services and foster homes to provide temporary homes and training until the animals are adopted. Cher said she has 18 cats she is taking care of at her home. Volunteers are needed to help with internet management, help with fundraisers, put up flyers, transport animals to vets and pick up abandoned animals or donations of food and equipment. Monetary donations are needed as well as cat and dog food, cat litter boxes and litter, puppy pads, bedding,

crates, fencing, kennels and cat traps. At Risk Rescue also has a feral (wild) cat catch and release program. In one area there were 58 feral cats reported. If you have wild cats in your neighborhood, they will set up traps, catch the cats, have them spayed or neutered and then release them. The Oracle Fire Department is helping At Risk Rescue with a pet food drive and food can be dropped off at the firehouse on American Avenue. Besides directly helping the cats and dogs, At Risk Rescue will be working to strengthen accountability and the laws on animal abuse. “There isn’t enough punishment for people that neglect, abandon or abuse their animals,” said Charlotte. A mobile spay and neuter clinic will be available soon. Look for future developments and announcements from Tri–Community At Risk Rescue. Donations can be dropped off at Hot Dogs & Cool Cats grooming service Mon, through Thurs, on American Avenue in Oracle. For animal pick up, donation pick-ups or

for more information contact the shelter at (480) 238-8455 AtRiskRescue.org. If you want to help and want to get something

yummy to eat as well, why not stop by the Oracle Post Office on Saturday, Aug. 11, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and shop the group’s bake sale?

Glen Millsaps, who resides in Coolidge, is a Democratic candidate for Sheriff.

Millsaps touts his experience as a Marine, a disabled veteran and a former employee for the United States Department of Justice. He holds several degrees including a bachelor’s in Criminal Justice with emphasis in Law Enforcement and a master’s in

Business Administration, specializing in Management.

He describes his leadership style as situational, “the kind used in Marine Corps,” he explained.

Millsaps has constructed a 16-point plan for addressing the PCSO budget, which has faced scrutiny in the last few months.

“We have the ability to

implement a zero-based budget analysis,” he said. “We need to uproot everything and take a look at every expenditure there is.”

Aspects of his plan involve turning the department green and looking at shift differentiation to improve morale. He also aims to analyze fuel expenditures to best address rising fuel costs.

Millsaps has an extensive civil rights background. He has served as an advisor to the Phoenix President of the National Association of Colored People and is also the co-founder and President of the non-profit Equal Employment Anti-Discrimination, which helps veterans who suffer from mental and physical illnesses overcome stigma and find gainful

employment.He said his immigration

policy will be informed by the rules of engagement, one which avoiding profiling complaints. “You don’t approach an individual and act upon suspicion,” he said, “You act upon policy and procedure. That’s the ambiguity that causes problems.”

FLORENCE, AZ-- On Saturday, March 24, Democratic candidate Emily Verdugo of Coolidge, formally kicked-off her campaign for state representative in the newly drawn Legislative District 8. Verdugo, a former member of the Coolidge City Council, held her kick-off event at the L&B Restaurant in Florence, where she talked about children, education and rural issues. “We must support services that are vital to rural areas, such as job training programs, our community health centers and community colleges,” she said. Emily further talked about her experience working in the non-profit sector and how her work benefits persons who live in the rural areas of Pinal County. “Families in District 8 are struggling daily, and our current state legislature has failed to address the real issues by diverting to an extremist agenda.” A graduate from Arizona State University with degrees in history and political science, Emily believes everyone in the State of Arizona deserves a quality education and

a sustainable job to ensure healthy families throughout Arizona. “If we fail to invest in education, job creation and healthcare today, we will never be able to progress. And we can progress from Mammoth to the Gila River Indian Community to Globe and down to Eloy and throughout District 8.” Born and raised in copper mining communities, and now living in Coolidge, Ms Verdugo has lived in both areas of the District, giving her a first-hand perspective and understanding of the diverse issues. “I look forward to meeting people all throughout Legislative District 8 and hear their concerns and priorities for Arizona in the future,” she said. “As a parent of two young sons, I want to ensure every possible opportunity for my children. And the same should be provided for all Arizonans.” Ralph Varela, a former Casa Grande city council member, is supporting Emily and is serving as her campaign treasurer. “I am proud to support Emily and I believe she will be an effective advocate for the people of Legislative District 8 and for Arizona.” Emily has decided to fund

Emily Verdugo

the campaign via the Clean Elections system, because she believes that in doing so we are engaging voters in the political process and that she will be working for the people of her district and not the special interests that dominate the legislative process. “This is the time for leadership, a time for real solutions. And I am the candidate who can get the job done for District 8. We can make Arizona stronger better but we must do it together. So I ask for your support to help me win District 8 and to change

Arizona’s priorities. Help me in making Arizona Stronger, B etter, Together.” For more information on Emily’s campaign, you can visit www.EmilyVerdugo.com or you can email at [email protected].
