Editor, San Manuel Miner: It seems we are going to have another Mammoth Town Council Election. My under-standing is that none of us received the required 51 per-cent of the votes. For those of you who voted, thank you. To those who voted for me, thank you, again. I think it’s time to clarify some issues. I have been hear-ing various stories, from the residents in town, as to why I am running in this election. I will tell you why I am run-ning. I have served in the Parks & Recreation Committee for about 12 years. This year, I noticed our parks and ball-fi elds were not being main-tained. I asked around and was told that the Town was not going to maintain them. Not believing, and wonder-ing why, and being a member of the P & R Committee, I stood up and addressed the Council during the Call to the Public. I gave my opinion about the weeds and neglect

of the parks and ballfi elds. By law, the Council can only listen and cannot legally re-spond to the comments being made during the Call to the Public. We have to abide by the same laws in our P & R meetings. Knowing I would not receive an answer, I fi lled out an agenda form and addressed the council about the weeds and neglect again. It was at this time that I was informed that the parks and ballfi elds were no longer an entity of the Town and would no longer be maintained in anyway. I asked why, and I was told that dur-ing budget meetings for the yearly budget, there weren’t enough funds in the budget and something had to get cut somewhere. The parks and ballfi elds were it. At this point, being frustrated and angry, I asked, quite sar-castically, if the parks and fi elds were no longer an entity of the Town, why does the Town still have a P & R Com-mittee? The answer was. “So

Letter to the Editor: Mammoth Council candidate speaks out

you can get up and argue for the parks.” Around this time, a coun-cil member brought up the subject of volunteers to help maintain the fi elds and parks. The question of liability for the volunteers was brought to the Town Attorney and she said she would look into the matter. Alvaro Barcelo said, during the meeting, “I feel kind of guilty, like I should take my lawn mower and clean the fi elds, since I’m the one that got the ball rolling on this.” It seems like the current Council didn’t think of the kids or the revenue the ball-fi elds and parks bring in. I, then, asked the Council, “Now, what?” The Mayor suggested that P & R have another meeting and return to the Council. Returning home after the meeting, the more I thought about it, the angrier I be-came. The softball fi eld was a second home to me. My mom was and still is an avid softball player. We were at the ballfi eld more than we were at home. We played a lot of softball games and made great memories and many friends at that fi eld. It just wasn’t right. The Parks and Recreation Committee had to struggle to get the concession stand built. First off, there was little mon-ey in the budget, no supplies and no help. Thanks to Sera-pio Rodriguez and his family members building and asking for donations of concrete, toilets, sinks, doors, etc., it got built. I don’t even think they received a public thank you. So, thank you to all who helped with the concession stand. Needless to say, I also have personal reasons I want to help get our fi elds back for everyone. The parks and fi elds are pretty much the only place

kids have to hang around, other than the river, which is not safe. The town was losing revenue with the parks and fields not being utilized. There are used for tournaments, fund raisers, birthday parties or just play. All the businesses benefit when the fields are being used for tournaments. We had our P & R meeting and I returned to the Council, again. I made the suggestion that the Town clean out the Maintenance Yard of all the scrap metal, unused vehicles and other articles that could be turned in for scrap metal and earmark all the monies earned to the Parks & Recre-ation budget line. They agreed it was a good idea but they needed to check on the laws governing the disposal of Town vehicles. At this time, Rachelle Sanchez stated to the Council that the auditor had been in a few days prior and she had asked the audi-tor if monies could legally be moved from one account to another. The auditor said

it was legal. She then stated that she and Dario, and Jay Baugher, the Chief of Police, would go through the budget line by line, to see if any mon-ies could be found. Obviously, monies were found. The fields are being maintained. Thanks Jay, Dario and Rachelle! What is wrong with a little praise? We all like it, whether we admit it or not. It works wonders on kids, coworkers, teammates, adults, animals, or whomever. No one likes getting belittled or demeaned; and, no one gets along with everyone, whether it’s on the job, ball team or even as a family member. You learn to work together to get ahead. It’s a part of the job, paid or volunteer. I agree with Diane Theo-bald’s article, published Feb. 15. Get out and ask what can be done. If you can help someone, help. Ask if they need help; some are too proud to ask for it. It’s great when you hear someone sigh a sigh of relief, or get that great big grin and a thank you. Let’s get unified, Mammoth; let’s work together. This is a great town and we can make it better.

I also agree with Juan Barce-lo’s article, from Feb. 15. The Call to the Public should be allowed. How else are we go-ing to know what our citizens want? There should, though, be no demeaning or degrading comments about the employ-ees allowed. Also, all of the expenditures, the budget are accessible to anyone who wants to see them. If you think there is mismanagement in the Town, go inquire to see them. To the person(s) going door to door: Now you know why I am running for the council. You can quit telling untrue stories. Attend the Council meetings and learn for yourself what is going on. That is what I did. I got tired of hearing this and that and not knowing whom or what to believe. Attend the meetings; don’t believe ev-erything you hear! The stories about why I am running for Council are not true! /s/ Melanie (Lanie) Gorham-ReynosoParks and Recreation Com-mittee MemberCandidate for Mammoth Town Council

San Manuel came to the plate 29 times, with three hits and two walks, striking out 14 times. Stepping up to the plate was Mireya Tamayo who went 1 for 4 with a single; Alyssa Cuellar went 1 for 3 with a double and two RBIs; and Felicia Medina went 2 for 2 with a single, a double and an RBI. Brewer said, “This was faster pitching than we have seen all season. When we did put the ball in play, we hit

it right at people. It is good experience for us to face tougher pitching.” San Manuel hosted Hayden on March 13, coming out ahead of the visiting team the 15 – 11 win. Pitching for the Lady Miners were Angel Darby with Mackenzie White catching, Darby faced 14 batters, allowing seven runs on four hits, three walks, and recorded three strikeouts. went 2 for 4 with two singles and two stolen bases; and Erica Hernandez went 2 for 4 with two singles. Coach Brewer said, “We had trouble defensively with pitching. Our pitchers walked too many batters. We can’t defend against walks or hit by pitches. The girls were trying to hard to place the ball. Too mental! Tamayo came in and helped us. She doesn’t throw hard, but she is accurate. She allowed our defense to back her up. Angel and Alyssa did a good job, we just have work to do as far as being mentally tough when we get deep into counts. It is good for them to feel the pressure and to get used to it.” On March 14, the Lady Miners hosted the Globe Lady Tigers picking up another win at home. In the circle for the ladies was Darby with Mackenzie White and Maritza Estrada sharing the catching duties, Darby faced 17 batters striking out seven and walking two for a no hitter shut-out. At the plate, Tamayo went 1 for 3 with a single, three RBIs and a stolen base; Gomez went 2 for 4 with two singles and an RBI; Cuellar went 4 for 4 with three singles,

a homerun (in the park) and three RBIs; Darby went 1 for 3 with a single and two RBIs; Sampson got an RBI; Porras went 1 for 1 with a single and two stolen bases; and Erica Hernandez went 1 for 2 with a single, a stolen base and an RBI. Coach Brewer said, “We had a tough week with most of the girls playing back to back games, but we know it will prepare us for state. Most of the girls are able to play multiple positions, so they are getting opportunities to play those positions either or varsity or junior varsity. We are having fun!” The Ladies will be in action on Friday, March 23, at Hayden, taking the field at 2 p.m.

By John Hernandez When a group of friends of Kari Darimont met to begin discussing ways and ideas for raising money to help pay for Kari’s bone marrow transplant, a young girl at the meeting brought up the idea for a car wash. Annalisa Raneri even volunteered to help organize and work it with her mother and friends from school. Many of the adults at the

meeting, myself included thought what a “cute” idea. It was a great way to get kids involved in the community and could raise a few dollars to help Kari. We fi gured any amount of money would be appreciated. The weather report of rain and possible snow for the following day did not bode well for a good turn out. What happened exceeded all of our expectations.

Kids’ Car Wash for Kari raises much needed funds The Kid’s Car Wash for Kari was held on St. Patrick’s Day. Perhaps it was the ”Luck of the Irish” or the leprechauns helping that day. More than likely it was a community coming together for a good cause and the hard work of people like Annalisa, her mother Stacy Raneri, Elizabeth Tilley, Carol Cosgrove and all the others who helped. For whatever reason, the kid’s car wash raised $1,105. Carol dressed up in her fi nest Irish green for the event. She said that many people stopped just to donate and did not have their car washed. It turned out to be a great event thanks to Annalisa’s idea and the good people who stopped and gave to help someone in need!

By John Hernandez Kermit the Frog once sang, “It’s not easy being green.” But a school in Oracle may prove that statement is a little wrong. The Oracle School District #2 Governing Board last week approved a resolution to request solar energy grant funding as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Federal Stimulus Energy Grant Program). The grant is administered by the Arizona School Facilities Board. The grant will allow Mountain Vista School to install a 30-kilowatt three phase photovoltaic system which will provide electricity to the school. An agreement with San Carlos Irrigation Project (SCIP) to interconnect the photovoltaic

system to the SCIP grid will be made. This will allow the school to maintain continuous power should the solar system fail for any reason. It is estimated that with the solar system the school will save $7,000-$8,000 a year in electricity costs. Three sites at the school are being considered with the amphitheater area being a popular choice. The photovoltaic system will look like a 35 feet by 65 feet shade cover and will be 10 to 15 feet tall. It can be utilized for a dual purpose. The shade area it creates would allow for an outdoor class room area and picnic tables could be placed underneath it. “We are going to be a solar school,” said Superintendent Todd Kissick.

We executed offensively and everything just came together.” The Lady Miners hosted the Hayden Lady Lobos on March 13, picking up the win over the Lady Lobos with a 14 – 3 victory. In the circle was Emmy Lou Clark with Felicia Medina catching, Clark faced 24 batters allowing

I think we are young and over time, we will settle in and relax.” On March 14, San Manuel hosted Globe, shutting out the Lady Tigers by the score of 17-0. In the circle for the ladies was Emmy Lou Clark with Felicia Medina catching, Clark faced 18 batters in five innings, allowing no hits, two walks and recorded eight strikeouts. By John Hernandez The Pinal Rural Fire Rescue officially began services on March 15, 2012. Thanks to donations of equipment the volunteer fire rescue service will be expanding their service area which will include wild land fire fighting capabilities. A fire engine was donated by Arizona Forestry. Arizona Forestry will be working with Pinal Rural Fire Rescue (PRFR) in the area to provide wild land fire protection and prevention services. Their service area will also be expanding into Aravaipa Canyon. The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office has donated a Humvee, three SCBAs (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) and a “state of the art” cardiac monitor. After some modifications are made to allow a gurney to be locked in position, the Humvee and another 4-wheel drive vehicle will be used as transport rescue vehicles. The four-wheel drive capability will allow them to support local ambulance services that may not be able to get into remote and rugged

areas. Pinal Rural Fire Rescue is willing to work with and cooperate with other fire departments and emergency first responders to provide better fire fighting and emergency medical services to the area. The cardiac monitor will allow them to send EKG readings to emergency room personnel. Emergency dispatching services will be provided through American Medical Response – River Medical out of Lake Havasu. The additional vehicles give them a total fleet of eight vehicles. The members of the Pinal Rural Fire Rescue team have been busy training and educating themselves. There are currently six EMTs with another preparing to become certified. Deanna Paine, EMS Lieutenant, will be going to school to become a paramedic. “People are surprised how much progress has been made from an idea that was formed only four months ago,” said Fire Chief Bud Paine. They are not done

yet. PRFR has been working on grants for a fire station. Someone may step forward and donate some land for the station. San Carlos Irrigation Project (SCIP) is donating a flag pole. “You can’t have a fire station without a flag pole and flag,” Bud said. Pinal Rural Fire Rescue is now the only fire based EMS in this part of the Copper Corridor.

By Jennifer R. Carnes This is the story of two girls, Lilliana and Lauren, whose lives are bound together by a common history and the man whose talent it is to mend broken hearts. It’s also the story of two mothers, Nicole and Jennifer, whose bonds are deeper than those of friends, as close perhaps as sisters, joined by an experience that no mother should ever have to endure. Lily’s story began the day she was born, Aug. 7, 2010. Lilliana Mary made her arrival at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tucson. She weighed six pounds, five ounces, and was immediately adored by her whole family. Her parents are Nicole and Frank Gonzalez of Mammoth and, if you don’t know Nicole, Lily is granddaughter, great-granddaughter, niece and cousin to the Reynoso family of La Casita fame. Mom and dad had no reason to believe that Lily was anything but healthy. When Lily was eight weeks old, she developed a rash on her face. Not knowing what it was, Nicole took her daughter to see her pediatrician. “She asked me did you know she has a heart murmur,” Nicole said. Until then, not a single doctor had heard the murmur. The very next day the small family headed to East Tucson and an appointment with a pediatric cardiologist. There they learned that Lily’s murmur was the result of two holes in her heart – an ASD or Atrial Septal Defect and a VSD or Ventricular Septal Defect. ASD occurs in five to 10 percent of all children born with congenital heart disease and occurs in girls twice as often as boys. VSD is the most common type of congenital heart defect and occurs in one to three out of every 1,000 births. Not all holes have to be

repaired surgically. Some heal on their own as the child grows and some can be treated with medicine. Lily’s doctor decided to try to heal the holes with medicine. She was on three different medicines two times a day for three months. “They didn’t help,” Nicole said. When Lily was five months old and a very small 10 pounds, her doctors and parents decided that she needed surgery. “She was going into congestive heart failure,” her mom said. Lily was admitted to the University Medical Center on Jan. 25, 2011 for open heart surgery. This was the point that the Gonzalez family met the man who was to mend their daughter’s broken heart – Dr. Michael Teodori. Dr. Teodori is a clinical professor of surgery and director of Congenital and Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at the University of Arizona’s Department of Surgery. According to the University of Arizona, he is a “renowned specialist in surgical treatments for highly complex heart problems in newborns and children.” But what he is is so much more. Dr. Teodori has a God-given talent as a pediatric heart surgeon. Ask any parent whose child has come under his care and they will tell you that he has earned the title coined for him by the Phoenix New Times, “The Prince of Hearts.” “Dr. Teodori spent 19 years in Phoenix, first in private practice, then joining Phoenix Children’s Hospital in 2002. Dr. Teodori is responsible for the development of the Children’s Heart Center at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, where he performed 70 percent of Arizona’s pediatric heart surgeries a year,” the University of Arizona’s

Health Sciences Center Office of Public Affairs article continues. “As a pediatric cardiac surgeon, Dr. Teodori works with children ranging from

newborn infants to teens who have congenital heart defects. He is one of an elite corps of highly skilled pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons nationwide

who are able to perform complex surgeries on some of the tiniest and most fragile patients who suffer from birth defects like hypoplastic left heart syndrome and transposition of the great arteries. Many of these infants would die if not treated in the first hours or days of life.” (http://tinyurl.com/7ayh5y9) Lily was admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit as a patient of Dr. Teodori. Her surgery lasted a little over six hours. To mend Lily’s heart, Dr. Teodori had to place patches over both holes, located in the very center of her heart. Nicole recalls that a nurse came into the waiting room every so often to keep the family informed about Lily’s progress. Lily came through the surgery with flying colors. She had a chest tube to help with drainage and had some swelling the day after the surgery, but was breathing on her own and well on

her way to recovery. She was released a few days after her surgery and went home to Mammoth free of medication and ready to heal. More than a year after her surgery, Lily is a happy healthy two-year-old who, like most girls, knows her own mind and is more than capable of telling everyone around her what she likes and dislikes. “She’s so stubborn,” her mom said. “She loves to be outside.” Lily likes cheese, tomatoes and lettuce and drinking from a cup like her mom. She’s adventurous and likes to do things by herself, like climbing stairs and crossing the “pirate’s bridge” on the playground equipment at the play park in Mammoth. She’s also grown a lot, going from the third percentile on the growth chart before her surgery to the 82nd percentile after. Looking back on the whole experience, Nicole

said the hardest thing for her was seeing how devastated her husband was. Frank, she said, has already experienced the loss of a child and finding out that his little girl was so very sick was extremely hard on him. Seeing her strong husband in tears was what was hardest for Nicole. Even thinking about it more than a year after Lily’s surgery brought tears to Nicole’s eyes. “Nobody ever thinks that I’m going to have a baby where all this is going to happen,” she said. And she’s right. There is no way to ever be prepared for something like this. Lauren’s story also began the day she was

born. Lauren Renae made her appearance at Mesa Lutheran Hospital on May 18, 1999. She was full-term and weighed seven pounds, three ounces. Her parents are Michael and Jennifer Carnes. This is our story. Her adventure and eventual meeting with Dr. Teodori was a little quicker in coming. Nothing about her birth indicated that something was very wrong with her. She stayed with me in my room, eating and bonding, and about an hour after she was born, Lauren was taken to the nursery for a bath and a check up with a pediatrician. She, like most babies, didn’t much care for the bath and began crying. She turned blue.

The doctor worked quickly, trying to stabilize her and keep her alive until a diagnosis could be made. They made the decision to take her by helicopter to another hospital, one more equipped to handle this sort of emergency. One of the Air Evac crews arrived shortly thereafter to transport her to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix. This was just the first of several “ups and downs” we experienced in the first days of Lauren’s life. My husband left Mesa Lutheran Hospital with some vague directions to St. Joseph’s Hospital, a drive in the best of times that would take about 45 minutes. When he arrived at the hospital and there was no signs of Lauren having arrived, he panicked. A call to Mesa Lutheran told him just how serious this was – the nurses at Mesa Lutheran told him she had stopped breathing on the helicopter before takeoff and the crew had to bring her back into the hospital to resuscitate her and put her onto a ventilator. Once she arrived at St. Joe’s, doctors quickly worked to determine what was wrong. They suspected that she had a heart problem. When they finally came to talk to Michael, the news was really bad. “Your daughter has a heart condition that is not conducive to life,” the doctor said to him. The diagnosis? Transposition of the Greater Arteries. Essentially, Lauren’s heart was plumbed backwards. Her aorta and pulmonary arteries were switched and all the oxygenated blood coming from her lungs was being pumped right back into her lungs and the unoxygenated blood from her body was going back out to her body. She turned blue because her heart couldn’t get oxygen to the rest of her body. This is considered a rare and serious heart defect.

It occurs in approximately one of every 4,000 births and affects boys more than girls. She had her first surgery right there in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Cardiologists performed a heart catheterization on her, pushing a cable into her heart from a point on her leg. They then put a hole into her heart, creating an ASD that would allow oxygenated blood to mix with the unoxygenated blood and keep her alive until she was strong enough for the surgery to correct the defect. There are many things that my husband still won’t talk about from that first day of Lauren’s life. I thank God for him every day. He was my rock. Dr. Teodori came into Lauren’s life when she was nine days old. Lauren’s surgery was scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. and hers was the second one of the day for Dr. Teodori. To mend Lauren’s heart, Dr. Teodori had to switch her arteries back to the correct position and then move the coronary arteries from the pulmonary artery to the aorta, which is where they belong. Understand that Lauren’s heart was the size of a walnut and the coronary arteries not much bigger than a hair. They let me carry Lauren down to the operating room. Handing my beautiful daughter to the surgical crew was the single hardest thing for me to do. Nicole also remembered handing Lily over to the surgical crew. “For me,” she said, “it was calming, knowing that she was going to get fixed.” It was the opposite for me. It nearly brought me to my knees. Like the Gonzalez family, we too had a nurse or doctor come visit us during every step of Lauren’s surgery. There were many ups and downs throughout

of the Corporation’s strategic planning and business development. “It is an honor to take the leadership role with Oracle Mining as we develop a near-term copper project in a desirable jurisdiction,” said Nicholson. “Oracle Mining is executing on a plan to production that will deliver value to shareholders and to the economy of the Tucson area.” Eagland, who has served as interim CEO since June 2011, has resigned as CEO effective today and will continue to serve the Board as a Director. “The planned CEO transition began last year and the introduction of someone of

Doug’s accomplishments comes at the right time for Oracle Mining,” said Eagland. “Doug has immediately proven himself an operations and corporate leader and we are confident he will bridge the transition into production.” Prior to joining Oracle Mining, Nicholson worked with NovaGold Resources Inc. and served as President of Donlin Gold LLC, a 50/50 joint venture between NovaGold and Barrick Gold Corp., assuming that role during nine years of service between 2002 and 2011. At Kinross Gold from 1992 to 2002, he was responsible for scoping, scheduling, developing mine plans and staffing for the Fort Knox Mine. He holds a BSc. in Mining Engineering from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. While at Donlin Gold, Ms. Upright was part of the leadership team that established the strategic direction of the start-up company. She was responsible for overseeing the financial and administrative functions, all HR programs as well as co-ordinating the annual capital budget process, corporate life of mine planning and budgeting. She recruited, developed and championed a high-performance team of administrative, procurement, HR, accounting and IT personnel.Red Hawk – Copper Creek Red Hawk recently announced the outcomes of their 2011 drill program at their Copper Creek mine project. The 2011 drill program is focused on increasing the connection and consequent resource expansion between the Keel and American Eagle (AE) porphyry areas and infill drilling to move a considerable portion of the AE resource and more of the Keel

resource into the Measured and Indicated categories for a Pre-Feasibility Study that is currently underway. Since the results from earlier drilling of the 2011 program (see prior news releases dated June 1, 2011, September 12, 2011, November 29, 2011, and January 24, 2012), assay results for six additional core holes have now been received for: • RAE-11-057 drilled S3E at -82.5 degrees to total depth 3727 feet (1136m) • RAE-11-058 drilled N30W at -85 degrees to total depth 4048 feet (1234m) • RAE-11-059 drilled S78E at -84 degrees to total depth 4387 feet (1337m) • RAE-11-062 drilled vertical to a total depth of 3887 feet (1185m) • RMK-11-065 drilled N27E at -88 degrees to a total depth of 4217 feet (1285m), and • RMK-11-067 drilled S58E at -84 degrees to total depth 4162 feet (1269m) The results from the infill and expansion drill holes reported above and in previous releases continue to demonstrate the continuity of mineralization between the Keel and AE and between the wider spaced historical drill holes. The thick continuous intercepts of significant mineralization are very encouraging and support Redhawk’s concept of a large porphyry copper district at Copper Creek. R. Joe Sandberg, Redhawk President and CEO, stated “Redhawk’s 2011 resource upgrade and expansion drilling program continues to produce very encouraging results. The drilling results through the first week of March have been sent to Independent Mining Consultants (IMC) in Tucson, AZ and will be the basis of a new resource update scheduled for completion before the end of April. The updated resource from IMC plus the additional permitting, hydrology, metallurgical testing, geotechnical work, and conceptual mine planning that are in progress will be the basis for a Pre-Feasibility Study targeted for completion in the fall of 2012. We believe the outcome of these efforts will continue to move Copper Creek closer to a production decision.”

Dr. Teodori, after having been in surgery for most of the previous 18 hours, spent the rest of the night in the PICU with her, monitoring her recovery and keeping her stable. Nurses explained that this wasn’t unusual for Dr. Teodori, calling Lauren one of “his” kids. Eleven days after her surgery, Lauren was discharged from the hospital. Two days later, she was back in PICU with a collapsed lung. Another week in the hospital and she came home for good

to grow into the beautiful young woman she is today. Like Lily, Lauren has always known her own mind. She loves with her whole heart and soul. If she makes you “hers,” then your hers for life. She has an opinion about everything. About Lauren, we affectionately say, “Seldom right, never uncertain.” She loves soccer and Tae Kwon Do and has recently discovered archery and the Desert Fox Archery Club in San Manuel. She’s a smart and wonderful kid. And we owe her life to Dr. Teodori. He mended her broken heart. The best news either family has received is that neither girl will need more surgery. Lauren may need a stint placed into her pulmonary artery when she is through growing, but that doesn’t require open heart surgery. But even if they did need surgery, it’s comforting to know that their best hope is not too far away. The Gonzalez family

celebrated the first anniversary of Lily’s surgery in January. They made a commitment as a family to participate in the 2012 Tucson Heart Walk. The walk will be held April 28 at the Reid Park in Tucson. It is a 5K walk with the goal to raise funds for the American Heart Association. The event goal is $270,000. Nicole and Frank’s goal is $500. They are asking the Tri-Community and visitors to the Tri-Community to help them achieve this goal. Cans for Lily’s Walk have been placed at the La Casita Restaurants in San Manuel and Mammoth. The family has also decided to donate the money from every cup of coffee sold at the Mammoth restaurant to Lily’s Walk. Every little bit helps mend broken hearts like Lily’s and Lauren’s. T:10.5” The Arizona Age Group State Championship Swim Meet was held March 8-11 at the Chandler High School Swimming Pool. Darien Apuron (10), Gianna Sweeney (10) and Will Newman (12) achieved qualifying times to allow them to compete against the best swimmers Arizona has to offer. This was the first state meet for Sweeney and Apu-ron. This was the third State Championship Meet for Newman. All three swimmers began swimming competitively with Sea Lions Swim Team in San Manuel. Sweeney and Apuron compete Unattached (no team status) with Coach Alex Gort, and Will Newman competes as a member of FAST Swim Team in Oro Valley. Darien Apuron achieved qualifying times in two events in the 10 and under age group. Apuron fin-ished 34th in the 50 Yard Butterfly (38.14) and 32nd in the 50 Yard Backstroke (39.05) against a very tough field. Gianna Sweeney qualified in several events and was able to compete in the maximum number of individual events (6) allowed at the competition in the 10 and under age group. Sweeney finished 20th in the 100 Yard Individual Medley (1:21.54), 25th in the 200 Yard Individual Medley, 22nd in the 50 Yard Freestyle (32.13), 19th in the 200 Yard Freestyle (2:35.70), and 27th in the 100 yard Breaststroke (1:34.77). In the 50 Yard Breaststroke, Sweeney qualified for the Consolation Finals and finished 16th with a time of 42.54. Will Newman also entered the maximum number of individual events allowed in the 11-12 age group and Newman also was able to compete in relays as a member of the Flying Fish Arizona Swim Team (FAST). In 2010, Newman won the 9-10 boys 100 Backstroke at State, and during the morning preliminary session on March 9, it became evident that Newman is still one of the best Backstrokers in Arizona. That evening Newman finished eighth in the Finals of the 100 Butterfly (1:08.45) less than 20 minutes before the anticipated race in the 100 Backstroke. During the 100 Backstroke, great

turns and underwater kicks kept him very close to the leaders and a great charge to the wall resulted in very close third place finish with a drastic improve-ment and a time of 1:03.06. Later in the evening Newman swam a great leg on the FAST 400 Yard Freestyle Relay Team to help it seal a second place finish. The following day, during the finals Newman built a slight lead in the 200 Backstroke Finals until ex-ecuting a great final turn and underwater kick that brought him well ahead of the field to win the State Championship with a time of 2:17.44. A seventh place finish in the 50 Yard Butterfly (30.08) Finals and second place finish on the FAST 200 Yard Free Relay finished up the evening. On the final day of competition, Newman had a great start, turn and drive to the finish in the 50 Yard Backstroke. The race was so close that the electronic touch pad timing system had to deter-mine that Newman finished in second place with a time of 29.48 (only 0.16 seconds behind the winner). A few minutes later Newman finished in eighth place in the 50 Yard Freestyle. During the final event at the meet, Newman led off with the Backstroke leg of the FAST Team 400 Medley Relay team that not only won the race, but swam one of the fastest times in Arizona history. It is a great achievement for any swimmer to qualify for the Age Group State Championship Meet, and having three swimmers from a town the size of San Manuel is truly something special. The swimmers from San Manuel had an outstanding meet against the elite competition at one of the fast-est facilities in Arizona. In nearly every race, best times were achieved and some improvements were beyond expectations. Two more San Manuel Swimmers will be compet-ing at the 8 and Under Championship Meet to be held on March 24-25 at the Kino Aquatic Center in Mesa. Tabitha Kellam (8) and Evan Apuron (8) are both scheduled to compete in several events at the meet.
