In two days the doors to El Centro Youth Center will open. Come see what the consortium of Adelante Juntos Coalition, The Office of Rural Health Policy, Pinal County Attorney James Walsh, Mammoth-San Manuel School Board Members and Superintendent John
Ryan has culminated in. The doors to the new El Centro Youth Center will swing open to a social and recreational center that will finally provide the youth 10 to 17 with a safe, supervised environment that they can call their own! The grand opening of
El Centro is scheduled for Friday at 6:30 p.m. The center is located in a portion of Avenue B Elementary School in San Manuel. The multi-purpose room will house the recreational facility with gaming equipment, special youth and family events and a safe environment
for youth to hang out with each other and experience positive peer influence. El Centro will eventually have a dance studio and a recording studio for those youth who want to explore and develop their interest in these areas. The music studio will be managed by the El Centro House Band,
AJC’s new youth center to open FridaySwitching Tides. Volunteer professional musicians will spend time in the studio teaching kids the tricks and secrets of making music, producing it and getting it played on the radio. There will be a dance studio for youth interested in the arts. Ballet, Hip Hop, Salsa, Tap, Folklorico and interpretive dance sessions will be presented by Aly Root, a volunteer choreographer from Kansas State University. The culinary arts room will teach kids about the wonderful world of food and nutrition. Volunteers from some of Tucson’s favorite restaurants and dietitians will be periodically holding
workshops where kids and parents alike can learn how to dazzle the family with affordable and delicious recipes. This first phase of El Centro promises to provide a great springboard for kids that will help them leap into areas of interest that will help them improve all areas of their lives while also engaging families to play together which could lead to strengthening family bonds. These are the kinds of protective factors that help kids build resiliency to substance use and ultimately happier lives. So plan on coming out Friday, June 8, at 6:30 p.m. Come see something new.
Editor: As much as he wants to run away from it, Sheriff Paul Babeu does not have a balanced general fund budget (he will likely be over by one million this year). In fact, this will be the second year in a row that he will have exceeded his general fund budget. As an election year ploy, the Sheriff has started throwing around numbers, making accusations and trying to scare the public in an attempt to turn your attention from the simple fact that he cannot manage the taxpayer’s money. His diversion tactic to have
you to focus on the county courthouse renovations is also intended to take away attention from his mismanagement and legal troubles. Every Pinal County elected official stuck to their budget this year, except for one—Paul Babeu. This is a Sheriff who oversaw a reorganization of his department that resulted in salary increases for many at the top of his organization. Paul Babeu likes to accuse county leaders of not wanting to hire more deputies. But he won’t tell you that
public safety has not been subject to a hiring freeze and is authorized to fill any budgeted or approved positions. In addition, in this budget cycle the Sheriff’s Office requested a $3.7 million in additional funds over last year’s budget—no additional deputy positions were in that request. When you go to the polls to elect your leaders, you expect them to be able to manage their departments and their budgets. The Sheriff has failed to do both and now he wants to try and blame anyone but himself. He can
Letter to the Editor: Rios responds to Babeudance around this issue all he wants, but when the rubber meets the road—the elected official is ultimately in control of their office. We have worked hard with the Sheriff’s Office to get his numbers in order. The taxpayers of Pinal County have bailed him out of his own poor budgeting decisions. But yet, Paul Babeu will write letters, pontificate at the top of his lungs and try to pass the buck. It’s time that the Sheriff realizes that he runs his department and not politicize his shortcomings by blaming the Supervisors for his problems. /s/ Pete Rios, ChairmanPinal County Board of SupervisorsBy Jackie Zappia
This report is to keep all members and supporters of the Arizona chapter of the Volunteer Optometrists Serving Humanity (VOSH) informed about our recent mission in Miguel Aleman, Mexico. It is truly a thrill to be part of this effort that gives the gift of sight to so many who have lost their vision and have no other way to regain it. For four days, the six optometrists, one opthamologist, one optician, nine students from the Arizona School of Optometry, and 17 volunteers provided eye exams and eyeglasses to 3,214 people. We distributed a record number of donated glasses: 1,153 prescription glasses, 2,033 readers, 4,000 plain
VOSH makes update to supporterssunglasses and 82 specially made pairs. For the first time this year, we used the Richmond Eyeglass Inventory Matching System, a way to create a library of eyeglasses cataloged by prescription. When used eyeglasses are donated to our program, they are washed and put through a machine that determines the prescription, and they are cataloged. The sorted glasses go with the volunteer caravan that also includes a trailer full of eye exam equipment, and it is all used to test the vision of the very poor and match them with the correct lenses for their prescription. One woman this year had such poor eyesight
that she was effectively blind. There happened to be a pair of very thick, strong glasses that were not an exact match for her prescription, but were useful until the team could later manufacture a pair to her exact needs. When the woman put on the glasses, she was able to see her children for the very first time in their young lives! Can you imagine? I want to express our appreciation to all who donated and collected used glasses for the library of lenses that were given to this very needy community. Thank you, San Manuel, Mammoth and Oracle for your donations, and thanks to the Oracle Fire Department for providing a donation drop-off point.

Editor: I publicly supported Sheriff Vasquez in 2008. The People of Pinal County spoke and elected Sheriff Paul Babeu. It didn’t take long to see an improved level of service capabilities to the citizens of Pinal
County. Executive management began providing clear command intent directives holding all levels of agency leaders responsible to achieve mission goals. I watched, and was impressed, as mediocre or
Letter to the Editor: In support of Paul Babeulow performing staff was being held accountable, some for the first time in their career. Emergency response times decreased and PCSO added an Air Unit which has already saved lives and interdicted criminal activity. I was proud to see our Adult Detention Facility become the only one Nationally
Accredited in Arizona and delighted to finally see an aggressive interdiction of the organized criminal smuggling operations traveling through our county. Who in their right mind, outside the criminal element, would oppose this? The active pursuit of military surplus material to
supplement the mission is fiscally responsible, as well as providing strategically placed all-terrain vehicles throughout the county for rapid response for rescue/evacuation of our citizens in the event of natural or man-made disasters. I’m a career law enforcement officer and have seen much in the 34
years I’ve served with Casa Grande PD and PCSO. Without question, this is the best run Sheriff’s Office that I have ever seen. Let’s put partisan and personal attacks aside and look at the results. You are better served than you were four years ago. /s/ John EllsworthCasa Grande
Editor: It is time for meaningful compensation to become a reality in Pinal County; it is time we are true to our own sense of right because managing an organization is about people whether the organization is public or private. I am perfectly confident that if my suggestions proposed at the Board of Supervisors meeting on Wednesday and again today, are taken to heart, we can reduce many employee issues while maintaining the best level of service to the taxpayers.
When we lose our top performers due to the inability to remain competitive in the labor market, everyone who benefits from County services will suffer. Merit-based and performance-based systems are the most fair. Nothing is more certain than that managers must reward hard workers; they have earned that reward! Across -the-board pay increases (especially one-time bonuses) that are strategically timed during an election cycle are not the prudent answer. They are an expedient answer if you wish to make the voters
Letter to the Editor: Meaningful compensationhappy, but this is not sensible fiscal stewardship. The Board of Supervisors is continuing to examine the potential for employee salary increases, although, this morning the one percent bonus proposal did not carry. Thankfully, though, our mill rate in our property taxes will likely decrease to $3.79. Make no mistake, the troubling times in Pinal County, over the last few years, have required a shared sacrifice to maintain county services. The taxpayers have seen some of the highest property tax rates in the state and the employees have seen shrinking paychecks. While some states are funding employee benefits 100 percent, in Arizona public sector employees pay medical insurance rates comparable to the private sector and
contribute 11 percent of their pay toward their pensions. Also, keep in mind that many of our County employees are property owners so they have been hit twice! It is a sound management practice to reward employees who work hard. Those workers give 110 percent all the time and motivate improvement in others, because there is an incentive to be promoted, based on their individual merit, not across-the-board increases! All of this I know, well enough, and no matter what happens in the budget cycle, I will not stop the dialogue regarding merit-based incentives. Believe me, it is quite possible! Sincerely, /s/ Chad A. Roche, MBA Clerk of the Superior Court

By John Hernandez First year Miner baseball coach Mike Sloan had some big shoes to fill this year when he took over San Manuel High School’s baseball program. Mike replaced Hall of Fame Coach Donnie Payne who retired after a 40-year career which included more than 500 wins, numerous conference
championships and two state championships. Not only did Coach Sloan replace a San Manuel legend and Arizona Hall of Fame coach, but the torch of a long winning tradition was being placed in his hands. San Manuel High School has had four baseball coaches prior to Mike taking over the program. The last three coaches are in the Arizona Baseball
Mike Sloan named Arizona Coach of the YearCoaches Association Hall of Fame. In addition to Donnie Payne, John Bunch and Hal Eustice laid the foundation and built the winning tradition for the Miner’s baseball program. Hal Eustice coached the 1963 Miners to their first state championship. John Bunch’s teams won two state championships. Big shoes, indeed. Coach Sloan’s first team only had three seniors returning and the start of the season did not look promising. The Miners struggled early in the season but improved as they gained experience and adjusted to the new coaching staff. Barely making the post season as a number 22 seed, they surprised everyone by making it to the Division IV semi-final game, losing to eventual state champion St. David. “I won’t lie to you. It was a tough season. There was a time when we had a 2 and 9 record and the coaching staff was questioning themselves,” Sloan said. “We told our players to just keep on grinding and keep a positive attitude and things will work
out.” This is something the coaching staff teaches its players. “It goes beyond the field. You are always going to have adversity in life,” Mike said. “They finally bought into this team concept and started playing better baseball.” This team exceeded everyone’s expectations thanks to a great coaching job by Mike Sloan and his assistant coaches, Junior Bejarano and Roland Sanchez. Mike did such an exceptional coaching job this year that the Arizona Republic named him the Arizona High School Baseball Small Schools Coach of the Year for 2012. “I am honored and humbled by the whole thing,” Mike said. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without Jesus Christ, any honor or glory I get comes from him.” Mike also gave credit to his wife Kelly thanking her for being understanding and being by his side. “What she has to go through as a coach’s wife isn’t easy,” he said. “It takes a team effort just not me.”
Miner Baseball Head Coach Mike Sloan was named Arizona Coach of the Year. (John Hernandez photo)
He made sure that his assistant coaches Junior Bejarano and Roland Sanchez get credit for the team’s performance and the award. “Make sure you mention Donnie Payne,” Mike said. “He is a big reason I am coaching.” He also thanked the players for persevering and buying into the coach’s system. “It takes a team effort, it’s not just me,” he added. Coach Sloan is aware of San Manuel’s baseball history. He talked about
growing up in San Manuel. Both of his older brothers played baseball for the Miners. As a kid, he was the bat boy for the team coached by John Bunch in 1969. He and his friends used to follow the high school baseball team and players. They used to admire the players and looked up to them. Mike would later be a player and then become an assistant coach to Donnie Payne. Mike said he learned a lot from

Hey kids, of all ages! Youngsters and young-at-heartsters: our good friends Splish and Splash are in town and they are having a pay-to-play pool party, all summer long. You are invited! Don’t forget, it’s B.Y.O.B. That’s bathing suit, kiddies! Think of all that lovely, cool water sluicing over your heat-soaked frame, watching the fun as the daring divers take their leap of faith, off the end of the board and down into the mysterious depths. Think of all the people watching, meeting up with friends, and drying off during break time before plunging back in and experiencing the bliss that is summertime swimming, that is to be had! Come on to the San Manuel Pool where a mere $1, or less if you are under four years of age and can talk a parent into joining you, will buy you hours of cool and delightful entertainment. Season passes are also available for $65 for Immediate Family and $35 for singles. In addition, there are
FREE swim lessons on Tuesday – Friday, from 8:30 a.m. – 10 a.m., made possible through a grant from the SaddleBrooke Community Outreach. Coach Payne. “Working with Donnie was great,” Mike said. “I always envisioned myself coaching at San Manuel. I never wanted to coach anywhere else, even when I had the opportunity too. It’s kind of a dream come true.” Congratulations Coach Sloan and the Miners baseball team for a fine season. There is a footnote to the coaching history of the San Manuel baseball team that is interesting and, if history repeats itself as it often does, it bodes well for the future of the Miner baseball program. Don Payne played for Coach Hal Eustice on the 1964
and 1965 conference championship teams. When he began his coaching career, he was an assistant coach for Coach John Bunch who became his mentor over the years. Mike Sloan played on some of Coach Bunch’s teams including a state runner up finish. Coach Sloan has been an assistant coach for Donnie Payne who has mentored him
over the years. Last year, San Manuel was named one of Arizona’s most successful high school baseball programs between 1985 and 2010. If they go back to the 1960s, they would still remain on the top programs list. The Miner baseball program looks like it is in good hands and will continue to be successful. Expectations may be
higher next year for Coach Sloan and the Miner baseball team. Seven of nine starters are returning along with a
number of experienced back up players. Fans and alumni need to get behind and help support Coach Sloan and Miner baseball.

Six generations of first bornsFamily reunions are the best. You see folks you haven’t seen for a while.
Inevitably the camera comes out and photos are taken. One family in San
Manuel stood still for a photo that tells a story – six generations of first
borns. First there is Barbara Louise (Gran) Culp (1921, Indiana). Then, Anita Louise (Culp) Ellsworth (1937, Indiana); Barbara Louise (Ellsworth/Wentworth) Spear (1956, San Manuel); Eric Lee Wentworth (1976, San Manuel); Destinee Wentworth (1993, Mesa); and Christopher Daniel Forrest (2012, Mesa). They are family!

By Frank Smith Two former San Manuel High School Miner Softball players (2008-2011) were recognized early last month by the ACCAC (Arizona Community College Athletic Conference) for their performance this season at their respective colleges. Noelle Medina, daughter of Ol-ivia (Johnson) Medina and Fran-cisco Medina, signed with Pima Community College last summer. She earned a starting position at second base and the number four “clean up” batting position in the Aztec line up. Pima ended their season 39-9 (#2) in Confer-ence and 49-12 (#10) in National play. Noelle’s stats earned her a Top 10 Ranking in the #4 spot in the state and #7 in the nation for RBIs - 76, and #10 in the state for Home Runs - 12. She continues her field of study in medicine and maintains a 3.5 grade point average.
Jessica Marie Castro, daughter of Michelle Gonzales-Castro and David Castro, earned a softball scholarship to play at Mesa Com-munity College. Jessica also earned herself a starting position as catcher in the Thunderbird line up. The Thunderbirds ended their season 12-36 (#11) in Confer-ence and 13-39 in National Play. Jessica earned a spot in the TOP 10 Rankings in the #6 spot for fielding with a fielding average of .988. She had 74 put outs, 5 assists with only 1 error. Jessica maintains a grade point average of 3.6 and is studying pediatrics and oncology. Coach Deanne Brewer said, “Congratulations to both of these young ladies! Continue to repre-sent yourself, your families, your high school and your community! We are so proud of you.” Jessica played this season with a torn rotator cuff. She plans on resting it this summer so she can
in the red rocks of Sedona. Ryan’s brother Brian was the best man and Amber’s bridesmaids were Jake Ayala of Glendale and Natasha Abeyta of San Tan Valley. The couple resides in Gilbert.
