Editor, San Manuel Miner: There is recognition long overdue. After being unemployed for over a year and now getting a job, I have come to realize that not too many employers are willing to give people a chance to work and prove themselves like they used to. These days, you have to have some type of schooling or credentials to even be talked to. This made me stop and think of a former San Manuel business owner. You see, this man did not care what your last name was or what your family history was or too much what your past was, because his door was open to giving chances and that’s what you got from this man. This man touched the lives of many young men of San Manuel. He touched lives

in many ways that he didn’t know. Some of his employees, including myself, look up to him as a father figure. This man I am speaking of is John R. Dicus, former owner of Dicus Chevron. The only requirements John had were to show up for work every day and give 100 percent. If you could meet these, he would find something you could do. The neat thing was that you were not just going to work for Dicus Chevron but would become part of a family. John took us in and treated us good, and cared about us and our well-being. In 1978, I asked John if he had anything I could do, after school. He said, “Not after school but I do have a job on Saturdays, if you want it.” I took the job and what I took was washing/detailing

Editor, San Manuel Miner: The San Manuel Little League baseball season is right around the corner, and I would like to offer a bit of information about our league to the community member that may not know about us. One interesting fact about the SM Little League is that it has been chartered in San Manuel for over fifty years! That is a long time and several people from here may remember playing as a child growing up in San Manuel. SM Little League is a chartered league under Little League International. Little League was developed as a way to help foster the love of baseball in kids and provide a safe and fun environment. It has grown into its own organization with thousands of charted leagues across

the country. The League maintains a high level of child safety rules that each league has to follow including national background checks on all volunteers and safety plans in place should an accident happen on the field. The San Manuel Little League consists of seven different levels of play: T-ball, Coach Pitch, Minors, Majors, Jr. League, Sr. League and Big League. T-Ball is for 4-5 year olds (sometimes 6 year olds depending on their level of experience) and is where the youngest player starts out. T-ball is the level where kids get used to being on the field and playing on a team. All players are allowed on the field and everybody gets a chance to hit the ball off of a T.

Letter to the Editor: Recognizing one of San Manuel’s best employersMountain Bell Phone Company vehicles; and, John, if you are reading this, I still will not touch ammonia to this day. After doing this job awhile, John worked me into the shop, doing oil changes, tire repairs, etc. Then, he moved me out to the gas pumps and into the public. This was the start of my nine years working for John. I can recall other business owners at that time coming into the station and asking John, “Why did you hire that guy?” John replied, “He deserves a chance.” Believe me, John hired some pretty rotten young men through the years but John took us under his wing and taught us good work ethics and what it took to be a hard working, good person, and to always keep our heads up. I know that people say they know John but unless you worked for him, you may not know him as well as you think. John is a very good man but there were times he was not so easy to work for. He took a chance on a lot of us young folks, so he pushed us to do and be the very best possible; but most of all he wanted us to have fun and, in doing so, he made a difference in many lives. John has also been and still

is a very active member in our community, working with the Rotary Club, Fire Department, School Board, and is still active in our schools and other organizations that help people today. Over the years I worked for John, I personally

got to see him help other people that were down on their luck, and it was a really great thing to witness. Seeing John helping others was what made us look up to him and made us better people. So, in closing, I would

like to say thank you, John, from myself and many others, I’m sure, for the lifelong lessons, caring and taking that chance on us when it seemed nobody else would. God bless you./s/ Danny Derrick

Letter to the Editor: All about San Manuel Little League

Coach Pitch is the next step and is for 6-8 year olds. This level is for the child that is ready to hit a ball that has been pitched to them. The coach pitches the ball and it is at this level that players learn the basic fundamentals of baseball. The Minor level is for 7-12 year olds and is for players to work on honing their baseball skills for Little League play in the Majors. In the Majors level, 9-12 year olds are drafted up from the Minor level through a try-out. The Jr. League is next and it is for 13-14 year olds, and Sr. League is for players ages 14-16 years. The last level of play is Big League and it is for 16-18 year olds. It is important to note that all ages are approximate and level of play depends on the child’s experience. This year the San Manuel Little League board members are Stepheena Huerta-President, Tim Scott-Vice President, Randy Rodriguez-Secretary, David Aronson-Treasurer, Brian Brewer-Player Agent, Stepheena Huerta-Information Officer, Joey Hernandez-Safety Officer, Martin Christian-Field Operations, and Timmy Scott-Coaching Coordinator. If you have any questions about San Manuel Little League, please feel free to contact any one of the board members. Registrations will be starting next week at the Community Schools Basketball games in Mammoth on March 3. Registrations will continue through March and into April. Fees this year are the same as last year: $65 for the first See Little League, Page 11

Editor: I will be asking my elected colleagues to sign a resolution to hold their employees to the same standards of conduct that the Board holds its staff to. The resolution is straightforward: current county employees should resign their position if they intend to run for a paid partisan political offi ce. Our Board has held this standard for many years and I feel our constituents expect other elected offi cials to follow suit. Our Pinal County Policy and Procedures 1.30.A, states quite clearly that no county employee “shall be a candidate for nomination or election to any paid partisan political offi ce.” This is to distinguish from elected offi cials in their fi nal year of offi ce. Even the federal Hatch Act addresses this issue by proclaiming that “a state or local offi cer or employee may not be a candidate for elective offi ce.” If the federal government concludes that a county violates the Hatch Act, that jurisdiction may lose federal funds. I do not want to see the county lose vital funding. Taxpayers should not have to question if a county employee is using your taxpayer dollars, taxpayer funded equipment or transportation to further his or her own campaign. It calls into question whether they are working or campaigning while fulfi lling their duties. The public has the right to expect good government and good policy from Pinal County. They do not need a county offi cial

Letter to the Editor: County employees should resign before running for offi ce

who intends to run for another position to be collecting full time pay while seeking partisan offi ce, raising money or conducting public events and speaking engagements. It is not my intention of

trying to squelch anyone’s passion for public service. Just don’t do it on the taxpayer’s dime. Sincerely,/s/ Pete RiosChairmanPinal County Board of Supervisors

By John Hernandez Students from the Mammoth STEM School participated in a Science Fair at Central Arizona College’s Aravaipa Campus on Friday, Feb. 17. There was a good crowd of parents, relatives and friends of the students viewing the science displays and experiments. The young scientists conducted experiments including working with robotics, a potato battery, germs, insects, plants and lizards. The kids did a great job setting up their displays and explaining the results of their experiments to those that stopped by. They also answered questions about the experiments. It was a fun day for everyone.

What’s a mom to do if Mr. Teddy Bear gets a rip in his leg? Or loses a button eye? Get out the sewing kit and make a vital repair, of course. Moms are just supposed to know how to do these things!

But what happens if moms don’t know how to do things like sew on a button or sew up a tear? Never fear! The Family First Pregnancy Care Center in Oracle and the Community

Church at SaddleBrooke have you covered! All moms are invited to a special “Mom’s Day Out” on Monday, March 5, from 2-4 p.m. at Family First, 1575 West American Avenue,

Oracle, to learn some practical sewing skills. The ladies at the Community Church in SaddleBrooke will be on hand to teach moms how to repair a tear, take up a hem, replace buttons

and more. Bring some items needing repair and the ladies will repair them with you. A basic sewing kit will be given to each participant. Refreshments and babysitting will be provided.

Please RSVP to Family First at 896-9545. The event is free, but organizers need to know how many children will be coming. Remember: Teddy’s counting on you!

By Guy HarrisonMedia and Marketing SpecialistORACLE, Ariz. – If you have a new digital camera that you are not sure how to operate, or if your home could use a few drywall repairs, look no further than Central Arizona College’s community education program for assistance. Residents of Oracle will have the opportunity to register for Basic Digital Photography as well as Basic Drywall Repairs. Both classes

will be held at the Mountain Vista School in Oracle. Basic Digital Photography will be held Saturday, Feb. 25, 9 a.m.-Noon. Basic Drywall Repairs is a two-day class held Monday and Wednesday, Feb. 27 and 29, respectively, from 4-6 p.m. Jim Cowlin will teach students the basics of digital photography, including tips on lighting and composition. Students must bring their camera and an instruction booklet to class. Tuition for the class is $25.

Digital photography, drywall repair highlight CAC’s community education offerings in Oracle In Basic Drywall Repairs, taught by Joseph Ramos, students will get an introduction to basic drywall repairs that can save time and money. Tuition for this class is $28. Cowlin is a freelance photographer based in Oracle, specializing in nature, travel and fine art. For more than 30 years he has been

documenting the landscape of the Western United States and has built a collection of images that range from broad panoramic views to intimate close-ups. His current work-in-progress is documenting US Route 89 between Canada and Mexico. By concentrating on Route 89, he is able to shoot in 20 national parks and

monuments and document the landscape of the West from the Rocky Mountains, across the Colorado Plateau and into the arid mountains and valleys of the Southwestern Desert. After studying at Pima Community College for two years, Ramos mastered P.V. Solar Electric Design and Installation (Grid Direct) and has served as maintenance

supervisor for Northland Investment Company. He has many years of experience in teaching and training employees in the identification and use of basic tools. For more information or to register for these courses, please contact Muriel Thomas (520-494-6616 / [email protected]).

By John Hernandez Fourth graders at Mountain Vista School last week met some of the Oracle Fire Department firefighters and members of the Oracle Firewise Board and CERT team. The firefighters talked to the students about fire safety and showed them the safety equipment that they use such as the SCBA (self contained breathing apparatus). They gave them a demonstration of the tools that firefighters use for fighting fires. The tools ranged from fire axes, shovels, and ladders to the “jaws of life.” One fireman showed the kids the different ways firemen use the ladder in their work including how they sometimes slide down the ladder for a quick exit. The kids got to see the fire truck and were shown the gauges and controls for the pressure hoses. A fireman then climbed on top of the fire truck and demonstrated the fire cannon, shooting a stream of water into the air which created a rainbow. The kids were excited and enjoyed the time with the Oracle Fire Department.

Oracle fourth graders learn about firefighting and safety
