An officially designated Rustic Road shallcontinue to be under local control. The county, city, village or town shall have the same authorityover the Rustic Road as it possesses over otherhighways under its jurisdiction.

    Rustic RoadRoadContinued from page 6

Rustic Roads are maintained by the county andare a mixture of gravel and paved roads. Whenheading out for a ride on a Rustic Road, be sure to payattention to the weather. Gravel roads can get dustyin mid-summer, especially during dry spells, and aresubject to potholes and other types of wear that anyroad in a northern climate will experience.

What is a Rustic Road? What is a Rustic Road?To qualify for the Rustic Road program, a road:

should have outstanding, natural features along its borders such as rugged terrain, nativevegetation, native wildlife, or include open areas with agricultural vistas which singly or incombination uniquely set this road apart from other roads.

should be a lightly traveled local access road, one which serves the adjacent property ownersand those wishing to travel by auto, bicycle, or hiking for purposes of recreational enjoyment ofits rustic features.

should be one not scheduled nor anticipated for major improvements which would change itsrustic characteristics.

should have, preferably, a minimum length of two miles and, where feasible, should provide acompleted closure or loop, or connect to major highways at both ends of the route.

The maximum speed limit on a Rustic Road has been established by law at 45 mph. A speed limit as lowas 30 mph may be established by the local governing authority. Remember the purpose of a rustic road isnot to speed to your destination, but to enjoy the view.

Taylor County has the distinction of being the first with a Rustic Road. Rustic Road 1 was dedicated in1975. A historical marker alongside the road commemorates the designation. R-1 crosses through hillsand valleys created by the last Wisconsin glacier nearly 12,000 years ago.

Timms Hill National Trail, connecting the nearby Ice Age Trail with R-62 and Timms Hill ObservationTower nine miles to the north, is open year-round for hiking, skiing and snowshoeing. A public beach is

    located at South Harper Lake.

Rustic Road 1 is located in northeastern Taylor County between Hwy 102 and CTH F near Rib Lake. The surface is gravel with heavy vegetation coming up to the road on both sides. The rolling hills give aglimpse into the past of this glacial landscape.

    16 2015 Taylor County Spring/Summer Visitors Guide

You can follow the sounds of laughter and

splashing to find the newly renovated Medford citypool.

After undergoing an $850,000 face life, therenovated and expanded pool opened in June 2014and drew hundreds of people from around the region.

The zero-depth entry pool includes a large, shallow play area with water jets, slides, dump bucketsand other youth games. Giant umbrellas protect thoseon the deck area from the hot sun.

The focal point of the new pool is a spiral slidelocated at its midpoint. The slide gets constant usefrom the young, and young at heart. Basketball hoopsin the pool provide recreational outlets for older kids.

The deep end features a low diving board anda climbing wall. The 10-foot climbing wall challengesyoungsters to see how high they can climb beforejumping off into the pool.

In its first summer, the pool, which is located onWheelock Ave. on the south end of the Medford CityPark, drew thousands of people looking for some wetand splashy fun in the sun.

The city pool is open seven days a week throughthe summer months. It is open for adult swim from12:30 to 1 p.m. each day and then to all ages from1 to 8:30 p.m. each day. The pool closes from 4:15to 5:30 p.m. to allow lifeguard staff to have dinner. At just $3 for adults, $2.50 for grade-school age

children and five and under free, a trip to the Medfordcity pool is a great value for those looking for safeand fun ways to beat the heat this summer. The cityalso offers punch cards and season passes for thosecoming throughout the summer.

As much as the pool renovation and expansionproject looks to the communitys future, it also built onthe past. What was started almost 60 years ago is

Splash downdownSummer fun at the renovated city pool

being improved upon now, said Medford Mayor Mike

Wellner. The pool dedication ceremony was held last

summer. It came almost 59 years to the day after thecity council authorized a community coalition to build apool in the city park.

The journey of this pool began in June 1955when a committee of local volunteers representingover 14 different clubs and organizations formed aswimming pool committee, Wellner said.

As reported in the June 22, 1955 issue of TheStar News members of the original pool committeeincluded Mrs. Armin Lindow, Vern Standstad, GordonJacobsen, Mrs. Gordon Thielke, Dr. CE Harries, GilbertStrebig, Bill Schaarschmidt, Dr. FJ Martin, Eugene

Lamb, Mrs. Alvin Tippelt, Mrs. Lyddon Ruesch, Mrs.Nancy Doriot and Mrs. Thomas Keefe.

Melva Keefe, the only surviving member of theoriginal pool committee, attended the dedicationceremony and expressed pride in the work that hadbeen done.

Keefe had been on the committee as arepresentative of the American Legion LadiesAuxiliary, and remembers taking trips to othercommunities to check out their pools. She said atthe time she had small children and wanted to makesure they had a safe place to learn to swim. Therewas also a desire to have Medford keep up with otherprogressive communities in the state in having a citypool. Prior to the pool being built, area children wouldswim in the Black River near the city pump house tocool off in the summer. Each summer the MedfordKiwanis Club and school district would arrange to buschildren to Sackett Lake for swim lessons.

Keefe said years ago they would have neverimagined the pool like it is today and noted howlucky the community is to have leaders committed toprojects such as this.

Tee timetimeJack Munson was the club professional when the

course opened in 1934 and he later served on the

first board of the Tee Hi club. Caddies were employedfor 25 cents per round in the early days. The boys hadto put in 40 hours of picking rocks off the course toqualify as caddies in the early years.

I think its an asset to the community, Budzinskisaid. It adds to the quality of life here to have achoice of two courses and community facilities like theswimming pool. When new people come to town, thisis one of the places they are shown.

For those looking for more of a challenge, BlackRiver Golf Course offers plenty of fun on its nineholes located on CTH O on the south end of Medford. The golf course opened in 1992 and the new proshop and bar opened in 2006, atwhich time they

    reconfigured the holes.

Maple Fest celebrates trees impact in Wisconsin

Heritage of the sugar mapleHeritage of the sugar mapleThe sugar maple (Acer saccharum) was designated the state tree of Wisconsin in 1949. The designationof the tree has helped grow the economy of Wisconsin in several areas. Sometimes called hard maple, thesugar maple is one of the largest and more important of the hardwoods. Sap from the trunks of sugarmaples is used to make maple syrup. Sugar maple trees seldom flower until they are at least 22 years old,but they can also live 300 to 400 years.

Sugar maple tree trunks are tapped early in the spring to collect their sap. It is a fairly simple process. You drill a small hole an inch and a half into the trunk of the tree, insert a spout and place a bucket or bagunder it to catch the sap. The sap is boiled into syrup, or concentrated further with evaporation to producemaple sugar. Thirty-four gallons of sap are required to produce one gallon of maple syrup (or eight poundsof maple sugar).

Many products can be made from the whole tree: fine furniture, cabinets, flooring, sports courts andguitars. According to the Sweetwater Company, the maple is especially good for electric guitars because itsnormal flat sound is a blessing in disguise when the guitar is played loudly.

One of the largest impacts the sugar maple tree has for Wisconsin is tourism. Every fall thousands ofpeople tour the forests and woodlands of Wisconsin to view the spectacular leaves of sugar maple treesturning their brilliant colors of red and gold.

Come celebrate the heritage of Wisconsins state tree at the Taylor County Lions and Lioness MapleFestival.

    Parkfestfest

While tailgaiting may have started out as just agroup of friends sharing stories, brats and beveragesat the end of a pickup truck before a game, it hasadvanced far beyond those humble beginnings.

While there are still many brats and games ofbean bag toss, a trip through the parking lot at anyevent includes tailgates running the gamut of culinarytastes. From made-from-scratch pizza to shrimp tacosand sushi, anything goes at the modern tailgate.

The city of Medford is bringing that tailgatetradition home with the second Battle of the GrillsTailgate Cook-off to be held on Thursday, Aug. 12 inthe Medford City Park.

Participants in the tailgate cook-off will be able to

Squeeze box talenttalentJust as Clark Kent is Superman, George Dums is

    Mr. Concertina.

Dums, a Rib Lake area resident, performsthroughout the region from church polka masses tocommunity festivals.

Dums is well-known in concertina circles andin August 2014 he was inducted into the WorldConcertina Congress Hall of Fame at a ceremony inKewaskum.

Dums induction class included seven people. There are approximately 260 in the hall, and halfof those have passed away or are posthumouslyhonored. The hall of fame members nominateand elect the next members each year. Dums said

the organization began in 1976 to promote theconcertina as other instruments gained in popularity.

George learned to play the instrument from hisfather, Bernard, and uncle, Donald. Pa would doplaying jobs and I could catch on to the old songswhile he was practicing. Pa played 15 years until hisfingers stiffened up, George said. The best time tolearn is when you are young. You have a better ear forit and there are less distractions, he said.

George bought his first concertina, a Star Clarion,at Coles Music in Marshfield. Rib Lake native FrankGacek was another big influence on Dums. Gacekwas a member of the Milwaukee concertina clubwhen he lived there. Without Frankie, I wouldnt have

learned much. A lot of people in the hall of fame wereintroduced to concertina music by Frankie, Dumssaid.

Gaceks older brother, Jack Gacek, also knewa thing or two about being a showman. Jack was aprofessional wrestler in the 1930s and 40s, and heoften wore a concertina as a prop. Dums bought JackGaceks concertina.

The concertina originated in Germany. It is oneof the original free-reed instruments. Its not made

in Europe anymore. It immigrated with the people,Dums said.

Every button on a concertina works in two waysas it effects the sound on the push and the pull of thebellows. No two people play the same way, Dumssaid. It was introduced as a poor mans instrumentbecause you could play the bass and the melodyparts. You dont have to know music as you button a

key or a number.Dums said good concertinas hold value in the

same way a well-made violin might. It takes 400 to500 hours of labor to construct a concertina and itmight cost between $12,000 and $15,000 for a good, new concertina, he said. It never wears out if takencare of, as long as you take care, it sounds better asit ages.

While many people think of it as an ethnicinstrument, Dums said it can be adapted to a varietyof sounds. Weve got music floating around in ourhead all the time. About one third of the music I play

    See SQUEEZE BOXon page 30

Hall of famer Mr. Concertina keeps the music playing.

    What is a concertina?What is a concertina?A concertina is a free-reed musical

instrument, like the various accordions and theharmonica. It has a bellows and buttons, typicallyon both ends of it. When pressed, the buttonstravel in the same direction as the bellows, unlikeaccordion buttons, which travel perpendicularlyto the bellows.

The concertina was developed in Englandand Germany, most likely independently. TheEnglish version was invented in 1829 by SirCharles Wheatstone, while Carl Friedrich Uhligannounced the German version in 1834. Various

forms of concertinas are used for classicalmusic, for the traditional musics of Ireland,England, and South Africa, and for tango andpolka music.

    32 2015 Taylor County Spring/Summer Visitors Guide

    Squeeze box talenttalentContinued from page30

now wasnt written for the concertina when I startedplaying. Some of the guys are playing any genre of

music, Dums said. If you have a Midi system, youcan make it sound like an orchestra.

Dums said many of the ethic groups in this areahave adopted the instrument for their songs. A lotof the old timers remember the old songs, he said.

Dums has been playing concertina for crowdssince his early days. It was a different musical scenein the area in those days. There were no DJs when Istarted playing. There was no generation gap in musicuntil rock-n-roll came along, he said.

Dums played with a five-piece band called JollyHarmony through the 1980s. Their music lives onthrough uploads to RFTV programming. Dums still

plays for events like birthdays and anniversaries, church festivals, and dairy breakfasts.

Dums likes playing old-time dance music forpeople who enjoy it. Ive played at feed mills, barns, lots of weddings and then played for their kids andanniversary parties. I truly enjoy it. Id do it all thetime, he said. Polka festivals can still draw a crowd. Those bands travel all over the country. If you cantell a joke or two, you are their best pal. I enjoy doingthat.

The longevity of his music means he plays foranniversaries of the people he serenaded on weddingnights for multiple generations of area families. Myfirst gig was at Fischers Bar on CTH D, he said. It

was a wedding. There was one light bulb in the placeand I played on the pool table. A bat flew through thereception.

Dums said it was a different era for northwoodsvenues. Youngsters learned to perform for audiences,

and big-name acts left lifelong impressions. Therewere no ID cards in those days. I played the old HighView when I was 10 or 12, he said. People hung outuntil one in the morning. They danced and listened tothe music. I never saw a fight in all my years of playinga concertina.

The shows are different now as Mr. Concertinaoften plays solo. I like to play one job a week. Winterslows down. I play the nursing homes then to keep anedge on it, he said. I usually dont go over 100 milesfor a show nowadays.

The versatility of the instrument makes it a goodfit for a group or solo show. There are orchestrationsand runs. Its all the things you can do without playingthe lead instrument. I might play three or four differentconcertinas at a performance. It depends on what Iam playing.

Dums said he taught himself the orchestrationfor his performances by listening to others. I boughtrecords at the Holiday store for $1.99 to figure outthe instrumentations, he said.

Dums said he never had much interest in playingaccordion. It didnt even interest me. It made agrinding noise and you have to be a contortionist toplay it, he said.

His other stint with a musical instrument camein fifth grade, when he played a tuba b flat

sousaphone. Practice time for novice tuba players canbe tough for everyone else living indoors. I stored itoutside and a robin built a nest in the horn, he said.

Tee timetimeAfter 80 years, Tee Hi Golf Course in Medford

remains a family-oriented recreational facility as juniorgolfers learn the game along side older generationswho learned the game in the days of wooden drivers. Its a family-friendly course, said Brian Thomas, who learned the game while growing up in theneighborhood. It doesnt deter the average golfer.

Thomas is now the president of the nine-person board of directors which runs the for-profitcorporation that owns and maintains Tee Hi.

Good work by the groundskeepers, reasonableprices and a length and location which make itattractive for a round before or after work, continueto serve the golf course well. Tee Hi manager SteveBudzinski said usage was up 30 percent last summer.

On July 1, 2014, the club marked the 80thanniversary of its formation. It is located a block offHwy 13 on Tee-Hi Place in the city of Medford. Theexecutive style nine-hole course is in a residential areawhich lends to its family-friendly atmosphere.

A popular youth program is held during thesummer months. The program connects kids withveteran golfers who teach lessons, then superviseplay.

Like todays juniors, Thomas found the golfcourse a safe and fun place to meet friends duringthe summer. He said his generation of players wouldplay all morning and then move on when adults came

for their tee times. I started when I was a kid. I grewup on a golf course, he said. Wed golf until themanager sent us home. On some Tuesdays it was 36or 45 holes.

Justin Zirngible is another golfer who went fromyouth golfer on the course to polished adult. Even with

Tee Hi is an executive course perfectfor those seeking a shorter game and Black River Golf Course is for those looking for more of a challenge.for those seeking a shorter game, and Black River Golf Course is for those looking for more of a challenge.

a strong handicap, he said the course still challenges

him after 27 years of play. There are smaller greensand you still have to putt, he said.

The course also appeals to seniors, women, and those who want a quick game built around shotmaking. There are leagues for men, women, couples, seniors and senior couples. Memberships can bepurchased and individuals can book rounds. Its agreat value for golfers, Budzinski said.

The course was on the edge of the city in 1934,but is now a landlocked park space near the center. While its length is set, improvements to the course, such as the bathrooms/storm shelter, total courseirrigation, new seniors tee boxes, and a strong treeplanting program, keep the course in good shape.

A new patio next to the clubhouse gives groups andgolfers all-weather options for enjoying an outing.Budzinski oversees a full pro shop at the facility. Thecourse has entered the computer age as tee timescan be booked online and the pro shop is kept efficientwith the help of a computerized system.

Tee Hi Golf Course is one of two golf courseslocated in the city of Medford. Black River Golf Coursewas developed more recently. The course, whichis now known as Tee Hi, saw its first official roundsplayed on July 1, 1934. It fell into disrepair duringWorld War II, but in 1947 the city sold the propertyto the trustees of the Tee Hi Golf Club. The firststockholder meeting was held July 2, 1947.

The Tee Hi property was the communityfairgrounds in the early days of the city. The originalTee Hi course was built using the remaining layout ofthe first nine hole course. Tee Hi was six holes andmeasured 1,655 yards. The planning for adding threemore holes began in 1958 and were completed by1962. The clubhouse was also started in 1958.
