Spring/Summer 2014Dear Neighbors,

Say good-bye to winter and hello to spring and summer. Get up, go outside and get active. This issue of Splash! is your guide to an ocean of fun that awaits you here in Ocean City.

Pick a park and go play with your children or grandchildren outdoors. You might want to visit Northside Park as we will be adding a new kayak and stand up paddleboard rental starting in May. Look in the Highlights section for more information about the rental program operated by Best Aquatic Management. Whether you visit Northside Park or one of our other fine local parks, we encourage you to get active and be healthy while having fun.

Pick a park and go for a concert. If you like music, come to Sundaes in the Park at Northside Park at 7:00 p.m. Sundays starting July 13 or enjoy Concerts on the Beach each Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. starting on July 9. If you are looking for some entertainment and a fun time on Thursday evenings you should plan to attend Sunset Party Night at Sunset Park downtown at 7:00 p.m. for a concert on the bay starting on July 3. Or how about catching a Free Movie on the Beach on Monday and Friday nights at dusk starting on June 23 at 27th Street. Details of these and other events this summer are available at www.ococean.com/sep.html or in this issue of Splash!

Visit your favorite spot on the beach. Captain Butch Arbin and the entire Ocean City Beach Patrol staff have been busy preparing for the new swim season, which opens on Saturday, May 24. Guards will be on duty on the beach from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from opening day until Sunday, September 21. This issue of Splash! contains some important advice to help you and your family have a safe, healthy and enjoyable beach season. Always remember to “keep your feet in the sand until the lifeguard is in the stand”.

Choose some camps and enjoy the fun. Our summer camp schedule is brimming over with fun choices for children. Our camp season opens the week of June 16 with Camp Horizon and Scamper Camp. We are pleased to provide a full range of sports and arts camps. For a full description of all of our camps, pick up a copy of the Beach Ball Camp Brochure the next time you are at Northside Park or go to www.ocsportscamps.com

This will be my last letter in Splash! I will be retiring in April, 2014 and handing off the authorship of this letter to a new Director. I have enjoyed working with you, our customers and stakeholders, since August of 1998. I have truly enjoyed serving this wonderful community and working with this outstanding staff. I will now have more time to discover all the fun Ocean City has to offer.

Sincerely,

Thomas J. Shuster, CPRPDirector

Thomas J. Shuster, Certified Recreation and Parks Professional and Director of Ocean City’s Recreation and Parks Department since 1998, has announced his retirement as of March 31, 2014. Tom has accomplished much over his 15-year tenure with the Town of Ocean City and has helped grow a very stable and successful vision and direction for the Recreation and Parks Department.

Tom was a key player in the development of many amenities in Ocean City, including, but not limited to the arena addition to the Northside Park Recreation building, the creation and development of downtown’s Sunset Park and the Dog Playground at 94th Street Park. He oversaw the planning and construction/installation of the Fiesta Park Pavilion, Northside Park’s Softball Pavilion, footbridge, and Flag Plaza, as well as the grant-funded replacement of the Town’s aging playgrounds and the installation of the Northside Park outdoor exercise and fitness area. He played an integral role in various program and event transitions, economic impact studies, project planning, innovative landscaping applications, general park and golf course improvements, beach patrol growth, marketing and management tools, and staffing refinements. He also lead the Department in redefining its mission and values, along with establishing positioning statements, and strategic planning initiatives.

Tom’s efforts have been acknowledged with many awards throughout his 40-year career; most recently having earned the Maryland Recreation and Parks Association’s John P. Hewitt Distinguished Fellow Recognition. This prestigious award honored his substantial and relevant contributions to the profession of Recreation and Parks, including his service to the National Recreation and Park Association as well as his service as President of the Maryland state association.

Under his tutelage, the Department has received national and state-wide recognition for publications, innovative programs, and events. Furthermore, Eagle’s Landing Golf Course was recognized as a “Best in State” golf course, and the development of Sunset Park earned a state Landscape Site/ASLA Award.

Tom Shuster is a model Recreation and Parks professional of the highest standard. His staff has appreciated his empowering and supportive management style, allowing each individual to grow, learn and succeed. His thoughtful listening, insightful suggestions, and intelligent guidance have made each staff member a better servant of the Ocean City community.

Thank you for everything Tom! You will be missed!

Shuster Retires After 15 Years of Service
