DIRECTOR’S REPORT

Mike Perry, CPRE, CYSA

Find your FUN at Alpharetta Recreation and Parks! Take in the beauty of our parks or sign up for one of the many classes offered at our centers. Please contact any member of our staff for more information on how your family can enjoy and benefit from our programs and services!

POINTS OF PRIDE: MOU with the City of Milton:

The Memorandum of Understanding between the cities of Alpharetta and Milton for a mutually beneficial partnership for provision of recreation and parks programs and services has been extended another year.

Impact Fee Update:

In Fall 2015, Alpharetta City Council adopted a new impact fee schedule for recreation and parks. An impact fee is a fee imposed by the City on a new or proposed development to pay for all or a portion of the costs of providing public services to the new development. Impact fees will generate a source of funding for future recreation and park expansion and development.

Park and Capital Projects Summary:

Wills Park:

A water quality and drainage study will be conducted at the park and will include recommendations for storm bank restoration and protection. The City partnered with Alpharetta Youth Baseball Association to purchase two new baseball scoreboards at Wills Park. A roof repair and replacement project for several park facilities will be complete by Summer 2016.

Webb Bridge Park:

Phase 3 of the drainage and erosion control project at this park is underway and expected to be complete in Spring 2016.

North Park:

Drainage improvements at the North Metro Miracle League will begin in early 2016. A replacement 29-passenger vehicle was purchased and will be used primarily for day trips for adults age 50+. The City partnered with Alpharetta Youth Softball Association to construct a state-of-the-art batting pavilion at Fields 1-4.

Brooke Street Park:

Alpharetta’s Veterans Memorial was unveiled at the park on November 11 during a special dedication ceremony. This memorial honors the men and women who have served and continue to serve our country.

Recreation Commission:

Alpharetta resident Jamie Bendall was appointed to the Alpharetta Recreation Commission by Mayor David Belle Isle in August 2015.

Alpharetta Big Creek Greenway:

In Fall 2015, a low-lying area of the trail system between Marconi Drive and Webb Bridge Road was repaired.

Wills Park Equestrian Center

HORSE SHOWS:Horse Shows are the majority of events hosted at the facility. We host local GHJA and Nationally USEF-sanctioned (A) rated Hunter Jumper Horseshows. Notable horse shows include Brownwood Farms, Elite Show Jumping, Cheryl & Co., Equus Events, and the Bolshoi Benefit, all of which have hosted shows at the facility for over 25 years. Most of these shows offer free admission so bring the family and enjoy the grace and elegance of horse and rider.

DOG SHOWS: The Dog Show schedule typically runs early spring to late fall and follows the AKC Calendar. Some notable clubs showing this year include Atlanta Obedience, 4 Paw, and Sirius Dog Agility. There are vendors at every show so be sure to bring home the best for your dog. Agility trials are races negotiated over an obstacle of jumps, tunnels, tires, weave poles, and seesaws. The dog with the least faults and best time wins. These are great shows for people who love their canine friends!

SPECIAL EVENTS:The Animal Rescue Fair is one of the most unique events held at the Center. Over 5,000 people attend this event annually, one of the largest in the Southeast. This event offers a variety of rescue facilities a better way for adoptions. We also offer a variety of Private Corporate Rentals during the calendar year.

RIDING PASS: Horse owners may purchase a daily or annual riding pass and must use the facility in accordance with park and riding pass rules and regulations. Passes may be purchased at the Equestrian Center Manager’s Office.

Wills Park Equestrian Center is a unique feature of the Recreation and Parks Department. The center hosts a variety of events including 50 Horse Shows, 14 Dog Agility Shows, and 10 Special Events for the 2016 show season. To view/download a schedule of events, visit the City’s website at www.alpharetta.ga.us.

Call 678-297-6120 for more information. Many of these events are free to the public. All events are geared to people of all ages and are held rain or shine. Dust off those boots, put on your fanciest of hats, and make plans to enjoy one of the finest show facilities in the Southeast!
