A GetActive! Message from Mayor Dan Ashton and City Council

Let’s GetActive Penticton! The spring and summer seasons are the best times to live,

work and play in Penticton. Our city comes alive with tourists, outdoor events and festivals, recreation, arts and culture, sports and entertainment, parks in bloom, warm sandy beaches and the feeling that there is no better place to be, than in the South Okanagan.

The new Spring & Summer Recreation Guide has programs and schedules with fun for the whole family. There are yoga programs to nd your centre; tness pro-grams to nd those muscles you never thought you had; and creative and active programs for children and adults of all ages.

The highlight of any summer is a week (or more!) at our summer daycamps for children and preschoolers with our caring, enthusiastic leaders providing a safe, supervised and fun recreation experience for your children.

The Try It For Free week means you can try some of our most popular programs for the best price of all – free !

Summer in Penticton also means swimming.  The Community Centre o ers a wide range of professionally instructed swimming and water safety lessons for all ages to help keep you and your family safe while swimming at the beach, oating down the channel or hanging out at the pool.

There are so many things to do there is no excuse not to get involved and be active.

On behalf of City Council, we wish you a fun and active time in our City – a place to play forever

Dan Ashton, Mayor

AquaticsAn introduction to water for babies and their parent or caregiver. To enter this level, babies must be able to hold their head up. The goals are to help babies expe-rience buoyancy and movement through songs and play in the water and to teach the parent/caregiver age-speci c water safety.

Babies and their caregivers learn how to use oating objects for support and explore di erent water move-ments through games, songs and active water play.

For toddlers and their caregiver. Swimmers learn, through fun games and songs, how to combine skills, how to kick with a buoyant object and how to per-form basic oats, glides and kicks.

This is a transitional level that transfers the pre-schooler to the care of an instructor. Using games and activities, swimmers learn to open their eyes under water, further develop basic oats and glides, and swim 1 metre. They also learn age-appropriate water safety skills.

Using games and activities, swimmers learn to swim 2 metres, further develop basic oats and increase their distance on front and back glide. Front swim and roll-over glides are also included, and swimmers learn appropriate water safety skills such as how to jump into chest-deep water and how to use a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Swimmers enter this level when they have successfully completed Sea Otter.

Using games and activities, swimmers learn to swim 5 metres, increase their endurance and develop their kick using buoyant objects. Swimmers also work on roll-over glides, side glides and front swim. Safety skills include deep-water activities and use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Swimmers enter this level when they have successfully completed Salamander.

Using games and activities, swimmers learn to swim 5 metres on their front and back, perform dolphin kick and begin using rhythmic breathing. They also progress with kicking drills and increase their swim-ming distance to 10 metres. Swimmers enter this level when they have successfully completed Sun sh.

Using games and activities, swimmers perform a front and back swim for 10 metres. Swimmers work on developing their utter kick and perform a distance swim of 15 metres. Swimmers enter this level when they have successfully completed Crocodile.

ParksThe City of Penticton is proud to announce the addition of three new o leash areas for pet owners and pets to socialize within the city. One site is Penticton’s new-est park, Ellis Creek Park, located beside Ellis Creek at Industrial Place. Bolstered by a Provincial LocalMotion grant, this project con-verted an old roadway into our new-est green space, and features gravel pathways, trailhead markers, picnic area, benches, potable drinking water and a fully fence o leash dog area. Ellis Creek Park is scheduled to open in Spring 2012.Another new o leash area that has been opened this spring is the old SPCA Dog Run near City Yards on Dartmouth Road. This o leash area will present an opportunity for park users to have a safe area to throw a ball for their dogs while socializing with other pet owners.

The nal o leash destination to be opened in the spring of 2012 is a natural area at the east end of Penticton Avenue behind

the Water Treatment Plant. While at this natural area enjoy the cool micro climate that is created via the narrow valley and small waterfall that spills from the Penticton Creek Reservoir. The site is accessed via the Penticton Creek Pathway or by parking at the small lot outside of the fence at the Water Treatment Plant and walking up the trail that loops behind the Plant. Note: The vehicle gate at the Water Treatment Plant is closed daily from 5:30pm - 6:00am The City of Penticton would like to

thank all city residents that have provided input toward the creation of o leash dog areas within the city. We welcome your comments and hope that you continue to provide input into the existing and future o leash areas.

New O Leash Areas Opening this Spring

Enjoy Okanagan Lake Promenade! The Okanagan Lake waterfront in Penticton….WOW! You have just arrived at a world class destination and lucky for us it is in our own backyard. Let’s start at the S.S. Sicamous and go for an eye opening walk toward the Peach. Before we get started on our walk lets go for a tour of the magni cent S.S. Sicamous, this beautiful ship was the last steel-hulled, steam-powered paddle wheeler to be used for transportation of goods and people in Canada. The ship ran from 1914-1936 opening up the South Okanagan to the world, it was crucial in getting our freshly grown fruits to markets outside of the Okanagan. The tour includes viewing historic items from the early 1900’s

and is worth every moment and the memories of this ship will live on and be a highlight of our walk. Next up we get out into the fresh air and sunshine of the Okanagan Valley, let’s enjoy the grass park area surrounding the S.S. Sicamous. While walking along the Okanagan Lake Promenade there is ample opportunity to stop and rest on one of the benches that have been donated to the city through the City of Penticton Gifting Program. Along the promenade in the summer season many vendors line the walkway o ering clothing, food and beverage and paddle board rentals. I hope you brought your swimming trunks because it is get-ting hot and we need to cool down. The beach at Okanagan Lake is pristine and the grains of sand glimmer like diamonds, calling for you to drop your towel on the beach and rest in the warm glow of the sun. I don’t know about you but I can’t just sit here on the beach without going in the water. Okanagan Lake is a 135km long lake that pro-vides many opportunities for recreation, your choices include wad-ing or swimming, paddling, shing and many other fun activities. The clean refreshing lake gives you a chance to cool down during our hot summer days. I know that our walk was a very fast tour of the promenade, but it will still be there for your next visit. Next time you’re on the north end of the City, you may want to tour other sites such as Rotary Park, Okanagan Lake Park, the Japanese Garden, or the Marina Way Park Xeriscape Demonstration Garden.

Be Part of the Solution.Quite often people think of Canada Geese as birds that y in a V, have a loud honk and have no e ect on their lives. Think again. Since the 1960’s the Canada goose popula-tion has been steadily on the rise and has been soaring out of control. The average goose eats 5 pounds a day, and defecates 1.5 pounds per day. This happens at your parks, beaches and school grounds. Concerns for public health, the local economy and the natural environment have prompted the development of an Action plan to help control problems associated with the increas-ing goose population. The Okanagan Valley Goose Management Committee is comprised of representatives from municipalities, regional districts and interested stakeholders with a common goal of managing the Okanagan Valley Canada Goose population to reduce con ict between people and Canada Geese.

Parks

Our Mission Statement: To maintain a naturally sustainable level of resident geese in the Okanagan Valley

to minimize the risk to human health and safety.

Canada Goose Management

1. PLEASE DO NOT FEED THE GEESE!Feeding geese and ducks contributes to their overpopulation and encourages them to congregate at parks and beaches - increasing risks to human health, damage to property and reducing the qual-ity of parks, beaches and recreational areas. Feeding geese and ducks is unhealthy for the waterfowl, as bread has very little nutri-tional value and can contribute to starvation. Allowing geese to forage on their own helps to ensure they remain wild. It’s against the law to feed waterfowl at our parks and beaches.2. REPORT NEST SITES – ADDLING WORKS!The egg addling program, entering its sixth year, is working as Valley goose population numbers are not increasing. Over the past 5 seasons egg addling has prevented 5,000 new geese from entering the local population. With your help this program can continue to be successful. Please report nest site locations, either on public or private property, to the Addling Team in early spring (March-April) - nests are guarded by a pair of geese, usually located near water.REPORT NESTS @ 1-877-943-3209 or www.okanagangooseplan.com.Egg addling is an approved, e ective and humane method to

reduce the number of geese entering the local population, and must be done under federal permit by trained personnel.3. LOCAL HUNTINGDuring the goose hunting season the City of Penticton accepts applications for exemptions to rearms permits speci cally for the purpose of hunting Canada geese on privately-owned agri-cultural lands. This tactic is recommended by Canadian Wildlife Service as a means to control the local goose population.4. LOCAL ACTIVITIESAs part of a comprehensive goose control program, the Penticton Parks Department is permitted to temporarily scare geese from target areas such as parks, beaches and sport fields. Staff can be seen using lasers and noise devices to scare geese away from these sites. We also actively clean up the goose droppings using a variety of methods including raking the beach areas, sweeping sidewalks and vacuuming the drop-pings off of the grass.Help spread the word - tell your friends, tell your neighbours: “Please don’t feed the geese & ducks”.For further information go to www.okanagngooseplan.com, or call City of Penticton Parks Department at 250-490-2500.
