Concussion Symptoms Physical – Headache, nausea, vomiting, abnormality inbalance or walking, vision issues (blurred vision, doublevision, light sensitivity)

Cognitive – Feeling foggy, strange, slow or out of it;difficulty concentrating or following directions; amnesia

Emotional – Changes in personality or mood swings;emotion not matching situation; sleep changes

Treatment at HomeThe athlete should not be left alone. Keep a close eye onthe athlete for the first two hours at home. Do not allowreading or use of television, computer, cell phone, iPod orradio. Keep the athlete in a quiet, dimly lit or darkenedroom and only give acetaminophen as packaging directs.

When is an ED visit warranted?You will need to visit the closest Emergency Department(ED) if the athlete had a loss of consciousness, the

symptoms are worsening, the headache cannot becontrolled with acetaminophen, there is recurringvomiting or if speech difficulty arises. Also, look forunusual eye movements, increasing confusion, balanceissues or shaking, similar to a seizure. Don’t forget, you canalso call 911 if you are unable to travel to the ED yourself.

Evaluation by a Healthcare ProviderThere should be follow-up with the athletic trainer or teamphysician the day after the incident. If symptoms otherthan a headache persist, then the athlete should beevaluated by a physician or qualified healthcare provider.

Camp Roanoke Discovery Ages 5 - 11. Introduce your child to the outdoor camp experience, without having to stay overnight! Discovery participants will enjoy activities such as archery (ages 7 and up), arts and crafts, field games, leadership develop-ment, rock wall climbing, hiking, creeking, special events, a weekly field trip and much more! Splash alleyA day at the beach, without the drive.It’s HOT outside, and the area’s most exciting new aquatics destination returns for a second season on Friday, May 27. Enjoy the water slides, current river, sprayground and more for a low daily fee!

New this year, visit after 4:00pm on any day and pay reduced admission of $5 for Roanoke County residents or $7 for non-County visitors. You can also save by purchasing a 15-punch “Weekday Fun Pass” at the gate.

Water SlidesSplash Valley features three water slides, including our giant three-and-a-half story bowl slide and en-closed flume. Each one is an excit-ing ride sure to get you completely soaked!

SprayGroundCool off in our large water play place designed for children. This area contains fountains, spray fea-tures, mini-slides and fun places to climb and crawl. Get cool, fast!

Leisure PoolOur leisure swim area begins at zero-depth, allowing visitors to walk into the water from ground level. Great for youth just learning to swim or adults with mobility issues, the pool has a maximum depth of four feet.

Current RiverRelax and let the flow of the current take you away, or race your friends to the end of the river.

1) Daily Admission - Visit for the day and make use of our unique indoor pool, wellness center, walking track, gymnasium and activity room. (Please note that group exercise classes are not included with daily admission)

2) Program Participation - This program guide contains hundreds of general public classes held at Green Ridge. There’s something for everyone!

Wellness CenterWith nearly 10,000 square feet of fitness space and over 60 cardiovascular exercise machines, Green Ridge has everything you need to get in shape. Many of our machines come with personal viewing screens, allowing you to watch cable television from your own treadmill or elliptical! Work out on a full circuit of strength training equipment with machines from Precor, Hammerstrength and Freemotion, among others. Enjoy free weights and a workout in front of mirrors or windows with a view!

Walking TrackGreen Ridge offers one of the longest indoor tracks in the area at 1/8 mile, with fantastic views of the surrounding mountains in all seasons. The track is open at all times during center operation. Children ages 6-9 years may use the track with a parent ONLY during the following times:

• Monday-Friday from 11:30am-1:00pm & 2:30pm-4:30pm • Saturday-Sunday from 11:30am-1:00pm

What to do here!indoor Aquatics at Green RidgeOur indoor aquatics area is designed with family fun in mind. Whether you’re looking for a place for the kids to splash around, water relaxation, water slides or lap swimming, there’s something for everyone here. The indoor pool features a 15-foot tall water slide, zero-depth entry, a hot tub, a current river, two lap lanes, a children’s water playground and much more. Due to programming and lifeguard schedules, portions of the indoor pool may be closed each day. See our scheule at www.RoanokeCountyParks.com.

GymnasiumThe gym features two full-size high school regula-tion basketball courts that can be divided with a cen-ter curtain. The facility is fully air conditioned, with six basketball backboards and two volleyball courts. Gym schedule is available online.

Activity RoomThis unique room houses a wide variety of interactive gaming equipment designed to keep you moving and fit. See some of the latest technology and move your body through exergaming, including:

Visual ArtsAcrylic PaintingThis class is great for the beginner student but can also be for anyone wanting to brush up on their skills. Previous drawing ex-perience is recommended but not mandatory. The focus of the class will be on foundations of palette layout, surface preparation, introduction to and handling of materials, color theory and acrylic painting techniques in the acrylic process. If a picture paints a thousand words….then dazzling, brilliant, pulsating, multifaceted, capricious, and fluid would be just a few

words I would use to describe the language of acrylic painting.

Acrylic painting is a relatively modern medium, loaded with vi-brant colors and incredible versatility. It had its first beginnings in the very early 1900s (1901 to be exact). This is in stark comparison to the other mediums which include oil, watercolor, and tempera. Oil painting dated back to the early 13th century and watercolor dated back as far as ancient Egypt and Rome; therefore with such history of these other mediums, acrylic is always fighting to gain recognition.

This polymer resin was the brain child of a German chemist by the name of Dr. Otto Romh and remained a mineral, spirit-based paint until the late 1950s. In its infancy, it was used primarily as a house paint, but into the 1920s and 30s, further experimentation landed it into the studio of Mexican muralist and social realist art-ist, David Alfaro Siqueiros. During this time, David Alfaro Siqueiros founded and held a workshop in New York City to experiment with the latest synthetics and methods of application. Attending his workshop was Jackson Pollock who began using these syn-thetic enamels for use in his dripping and pouring techniques.

By the 1940s, the acrylics were further developed by Leonard Bo-cour and Sam Golden and were given the name “Magna”. Later in its development, it was named Liquitex@ as it had a “liquid tex-ture.” Some of the well-known contemporary artists who used this new medium during this time period were Mark Rothko, Chuck Close, Kenneth Noland, Barrett Newman, and Roy Lichtenstein.Acrylics became very popular and widely used during the 1960’s during the pop art movement (the exploration of popular culture), photorealism (art based closely on photographs), op art (art that explored illusions of a surface) and abstract expressionistic move-ments. The artists appreciated the vibrancy and versatility of the paint. This proved a very acceptable medium as these art move-ments utilized the hard-edged flat images and distinct use of line.

At present, this polymer/copolymer-based paint is a popular, mul-tifaceted and widely used media and its popularity continues on a steady, upward trend with constant improvements as the me-dium is developed. It dries very quickly which is a wonderful asset when working with layering the paint. Depending on the amount of water mixed with the paint, it can be used opaquely or in a transparent watercolor style which has its own unique quality. It can also be used in a very thick fashion, similar to the use of oil paint. It is a very safe form of painting as it is water-based and does not have the toxicity problems found in many of the other painting mediums.

Its flexibility also makes it suitable for a wide range of techniques such as wet-on-wet, impasto (straight from the tube), transparent glazing (my personal favorite), dry brush, scumbling, which is a type of scrubbing motion with your brush, and collage, to name just a few. I cannot emphasize the personal fascination that this painting medium evokes. Its uses are endless and as I delve into the contem-porary art world, I find myself enamored by its pliability and dazzling colors. It is definitely a painting style that goes well beyond a thou-sand words.

DrawingDrawing is an essential first step in laying the base for painting in any media. You will learn to look at an object in a new way and really see what you are seeing. Shapes, shading, lighting, picture composition, contour drawing, gesture drawing and one and two point perspectives will be covered in this six week program. In-structor: Michael Farrar.

Oil Painting by the Bob Ross MethodWith the Bob Ross method of Oil Painting, you will complete each painting in just one class. Even people who have never painted before can do this although more experienced people will also enjoy the classes. Each painting is done on a 16x20 inch can-vas using Bob Ross supplies. Pottery ClassesOur well equipped studio at Brambleton Center provides all tools necessary to create original works of clay in both wheel and free-form. Clay Sculpture for BeginnersThis course will present you with a basic knowledge of sculpture using a varity of techniques. The fee includes an armature, two tools and the use of more, and clay. Carlos Dowling is an accom-plished Bermudian artist. His major works are in pottery, sculp-ture and mold making. At age of 13, he was an apprentice of the late award-winning Canadian sculptress, Bylee Lang. Much of his work can be seen in numerous public and private collections in Bermuda and America, as well as in major films such as ‘The Deep’. Eight week program.

How can we create more jobs and keep more money in the local com-munity, while addressing environmental issues?

May sound too good to be true, but Virginia Tech in partnership with Roa-noke County, the local community, and a number of other stakeholders are trying to do just that at the 377-acre farm in southwest Roanoke County called the Catawba Sustainability Center.

Dating back to the early 1900s, the farm was once a dairy, employing nearby residents to provide meat and dairy products to the staff and patients at the Catawba Sanitarium, which is now known as the Catawba Hospital. Industri-alization of the nation’s food supply system diminished need for a local dairy, and in 1988 the hospital transferred its land holdings to Virginia Tech. Funds for the farm dwindled and for over a decade it sat empty; an underutilized gem in the Catawba Valley.

“The idea for the Catawba Sustainability Center was uniquely born out of a request from Catawba Landcare, a landowner-led community group, whose primary focus is how neighbors can work together to ensure a sustainable community.” says the Center’s director Christy Gabbard. She explains that in October of 2007, Catawba Landcare approached faculty at Virginia Tech and asked how this property, the university, and their community could collabo-

rate to address issues related to economy, the environ-ment, and community. Today, the Center, located in the view shed of VA-311, and adjacent to the Appalachian Trail, is a living, learning, laboratory for green ideas and sustainable communities.

To address sustainability issues the Center has employed an approach that includes: community outreach, learn-ing and discovery, and land-based business incubation. Among these is a program, called VT EarthWorks. “In 2009, we launched VT EarthWorks, an incubation pro-gram fostering business development for agriculture-based businesses,” says Gabbard. “We offer courses on low-input food production, business management, and access market outlets. In addition, we provide land for growers at the Center.” The next learning opportunity offered at the Catawba Sustainability Center, in part-nership with Virginia Cooperative Extension and the VT Horticulture Department, is a hands-on cut flower work-shop for commercial production on June 29th.

Since 2009 VT EarthWorks has recruited 39 member businesses including Greens-to-Go a new business established at the Center. Greens-to-Go uses season extension to provide greens to individuals, restaurants, stores, and even Roanoke County Public Schools. You can order from Greens-to-Go by joining www.runner-bean.com, a virtual farmers market where the individual consumer can customize their weekly local food order.

VT EarthWorks also helps by connecting its members to at the Catawba Valley Farmers Market. With support from Roanoke County, VT EarthWorks has launched the second year of the market with nearly 20 vendors sell-ing a diverse array of products. ”The Market is a way for the community to support local producers, get fresh healthy food, keep more money circulating in the lo-cal community, and help ensure our agricultural lands remain productive and profitable,” says Gabbard. The Center continues to build its partnership with Catawba Landcare, Catawba Ruritans, Roanoke County, and a va-riety of other community groups by hosting the popular Celebrate Catawba on August 13th. Celebrate Catawba is in its third year and is a celebration of land and lives of the Catawba Valley.

Website ConstructionThis workshop will introduce you to essential concepts and a set of free tools and simple techniques for planning, configuring, and constructing a personal web site. Basic concepts for using PC client programs to interact with internet web servers will be covered. Planning considerations will include browser differ-ences, use of hyperlinks, placement and insertion of background and foreground images, and layout and use of hypertext markup language. Water SafetyTips for Summer Fun

There’s probably no better way for kids to beat Sum-mer heat than to splash around in the cool water

of a pool, river or lake. And because drowning remains the second leading injury-related cause of death in children ages 1-14, the Safe Kids Southwest Virginia Coalition and Carilion Clinic want to increase aware-ness about water safety.

According to a national study of drowning-related in-cidents involving children, a parent or caregiver were supervising the child in nearly nine out of 10 child drowning-related deaths.

According to Jill Lucas, Safe Kids Southwest Virginia Coalition coordinator and Carilion Clinic health educa-tor, while constant supervision is critical, the national study also found that many adults were not properly fencing pools, requiring use of personal flotation de-vices (PFDs), teaching their children how to swim or warning children of dangers around home.

Water safety, Lucas said, entails the understanding and practice of four water safety wisdoms – supervi-sion, environment, gear and education. Parents need to properly supervise swimming activities, ensure the area is safe for swimming, understand the difference between a PFD and blow-up toys, and teach children to swim at a young age, she said. Lucas recommends parents adhere to the following guidelines for their child’s safety around water:

• Never leave children alone near water. Designate a “water watcher.”• Install fences around pools with self latching gates with locks.• Install alarms on doors, windows, and gates that lead to water.• Install anti-entrapment drain covers.• Teach children to swim.• Teach children to never run, push or jump on others around water.• Require children to always wear U.S. Coast Guard approved life jackets when around water (inflatable tubes and water wings are not safety devices).• Make sure children swim in only posted areas of rivers, lakes and oceans.• Learn CPR.

Lessons at Green RidgeGreen Ridge Recreation Center follows the guidelines of the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim, Preschool and Parent-Child swimming lesson programs. Red Cross standards help us maintain the quality, consistency and credibility of our Aquatics Program. Our facility provides a safe and fun learning environment utilizing certified water safety instructors. Each level is a progression through basic swimming skills and water safety. Students must be able to follow directions and to take turns in order to participate in group lessons. Classes may be offered as combination classes and/or cancelled due to lack of enrollment. Level iii LessonsNow you’re really a swimmer! At this level, the swimmer is very confident and comfortable in the water. Must be able to float on back, rollover, and perform front float prior to the start of this class. Emphasis on coordination of breathing, arm strokes, and kicking and crawl. Dolphin kick, scissor kick and elementary backstroke are introduced. No classes the week of July 4-8










Level iV LessonsThis is your chance to push yourself and really enhance your swimming skills. To participate in this class you must be able to jump into chest-deep water, swim front crawl for 15 yards with face in the water and rhythmic breathing pattern. Focus at this level is on performing strokes efficiently to increase your endur-ance. Upon completion of this class participants will develop but-terfly, sidestroke, breaststroke and turns on the wall. No classes the week of July 4-8

Why choose personal training? Exercise adherence is not about being perfect, it is about being consistent. A personal trainer is a

fitness professional with a strong science background and specializes in the body and how exercise affects it. A beginner to a top athlete can benefit.

Fifty-six year old Mary Ann Jourling says that working with a personal trainer has been a challenging, but positive experience. “I’ve seen changes in me that I didn’t think would be possible and completed activities I thought were impossible because of my age... My blood pressure is down and I’m more active than before. Six months ago I couldn’t run an eighth mile, now I’m preparing to run a 5K.”

If you are short on time a personal trainer is especially important; they can give you the most bang for your buck. One can achieve fitness goals in as little as 20 to 30 minutes. Exercise intensity plays a big role in the results that are achieved. The higher the intensity the less time one needs to exercise. Says participant Susan Keene, “My trainer in-stinctively seems to know when I need to be encouraged to go to my next level. She also always has an alternate exercise ready if and when I need one. She has guided me into doing more than I thought I would ever be able todo.

A personal trainer will assess your current fitness level, set goals, set up your fitness program, encourage, and keep you motivated. A per-sonal trainer is also there to teach. Increasing fitness knowledge will help reduce chance of injury through proper technique. A personal trainer can also help you to break through plateaus by taking your routine to a new level.

It’s not just athletes that can benefit from a trainer.

Green Ridge Personal TrainingA Certified Personal Trainer will work with you individu-ally or as a group to develop a program based on your specific needs. Services begin with a complimentary con-sultation to discuss specific health history, current fitness level and specific fitness goals. Our certified trainers will work with individuals to improve cardiovascular fitness, strength, and flexibility. Benefits of personal training in-clude improved motivation and increased exercise reten-tion. Clients will also receive basic nutrition guidance and innovative fitness routines. Personal training is available for adults as well as teens and tweens ages nine and up. Youth participation will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. When it comes to your sport, what does it take to get to the next level? Sometimes this is a tough question. You have

talent, you practice hard, you listen to the coaches, and the dedi-cation is high; however the goals you have set seem to be out of reach. Or even worse, the goals a parent has set seem to be out of reach. Personally, I have spent the majority of my golf career in that state of mind. At every level, I continually established high goals that prevented me from truly enjoying the game. I always found myself dissatisfied and reaching for the next level. Don’t get me wrong, I did receive a tremendous amount of enjoyment in this pursuit, but it was always connected to the accomplish-ment of a goal and not based on the game itself.’

Not until recently have I realized that golf is not life or death, it’s a game. I believe that this realization is based on my experiences in teaching golf to kids and more importantly, my involvement in coaching basketball and football for my son’s teams. Now please do not tell him this, but after watching his participation in these sports, I have abandoned the goal of him playing in the NFL, NBA, or on the PGA Tour. So I think “why should he play?”. The answer is simple. IT IS A GAME, and playing a game has numerous benefits.

My goal as a father involved in youth sports is to create an op-portunity for my son and eventually my daughter to experience the benefits of playing the game. Sports allows my kids to stay fit, gives them a form of stress relief, teaches valuable social skills, allows them to feel more connected to their school, to be on a team, gives them an opportunity to play under aset of rules, and helps develop healthy habits. When you ask my kids why they play the game, they say “to have fun, to be with their friends, to make new friends, to drink Gatorade, and to wear a cool uniform”.Sometimes, as a golf instructor and as a coach, I see all of these benefits and reasons pushed aside by the drive and pressure of reaching lofty goals. This was evident throughout my own golf career. I was constantly pressuring myself to excel at the high school level, to win a state championship, to get a college golf scholarship, to receive all-conference honors, to be nationally ranked, to receive All-American status, and to play professionally. One lesson that I learned was that it is rare for the one buried under pressure to reach their goals. The person that enjoyed actu-ally playing the game produced a sense of comfort and the right mental state to excel. As an athlete desperately trying to reach the next level, I produced a sense of tension that prevented me from reaching my peak performance. I believe that if you treat the game with a kid’s attitude, then you will receive the true benefits of the game and can reach your peak performance.

Did you know that according to the National Alliance for Youth Sports, 73% of kids drop organized sports by age 13? In some of the most popular sports – football, basketball, track and field, baseball, and softball—only one or two of every 100 kids who play the sport in high school will receive scholarship money to continue playing in college.

So should you give up your dream of winning a scholarship and being a college athlete? Should you not set goals in playing the game? No, it is always good to have goals. Just don’t forget the fun. If you play sports, it should be because you love the game, its fun, you enjoy time with friends, you like Gatorade and the uni-form is cool.

Playground construction has come a long ways since you were a kid. Gone are the days of bulky wooden frames and

rusty metal. Modern designs place an emphasis on both safety and child physical development.

Roanoke County’s newest playground at Starkey Park is one of the largest and most innovative play structures in the area. This plastic and metal design from Cunningham Associates and GameTime was custom built to combine both traditional and modern elements. Today’s playground equipment takes the “rules” away from play, allowing children to work their imagination, as well as their muscles.

Stay at home dad Joseph Cormier says the new Starkey play-ground is one of the most interactive play sets he has ever seen. “With five slides and multiple climbing surfaces it raises the bar, but the jewel in the crown of this park is the music center. My son loves to bang out rhythms on the drums and shakers. I am looking forward to spending many more after-noons watching him explore the park and use his imagination. Whether he is pretending to climb Mt. Everest or using the spyglass like a pirate, I know he will be having the time of his life.”

Much time and attention is put into playground installation in any park. Roanoke County put together a team of administra-tors and Playground Safety Inspectors to choose the equip-ment that would be the right fit for Starkey Park.

Landscape Architect Lon Williams was on the committee that helped choose this design. He says their decision was based on the diversity of experiences offered, as well as durability. “We were able to customize the playground system that was selected to include specialized components that would ap-peal to the senses of sight, hearing and touch, and that would provide challenge, spatial awareness and muscle develop-ment opportunities for the playground users.”

Remember watching the Rose Parade on TV as a child? Did you ever want to be there to feel the excitement and experience the

parade first-hand? This year you can join the over 700,000 spectators while on our exciting New Year’s Day vacation.

The Tournament of Roses was begun in 1890 by the Valley Hunt Club of Pasadena to promote this California paradise to the rest of the country that was buried in snow and cold weather. In California the flowers were blooming, the oranges were about to bear and the warm California sun was shining. In 1895 the Tournament of Roses Association took charge of the festival and in 1902 the football game was added.

The Tournament of Roses has come a long way since its early days. The Rose Parade’s elaborate floats now feature high-tech computer-ized animation and exotic natural materials from around the world. Although a few floats are still built exclusively by volunteers from their sponsoring communities, most are built by professional float building companies and take nearly a year to construct. The year-long effort pays off on New Year’s morning, when millions of viewers around the world enjoy the Rose Parade.

The 123rd Rose Parade, themed, “Just Imagine…” will take place on Monday, January 2, 2012 at 8:00 am (PST) featuring spirited marching bands from throughout the nation, majestic floral floats, and high-stepping equestrian units. Now “Just Imagine…” you in your reserved seat in a prominent spot along the parade route..

Day TripsMiners & MillionairesBegin your day in the miner’s town of Pocahontas, VA, home to the Pocahontas Exhibition Coal Mine. Your guided tour will be led by retired coal miners. As you walk into the mine, you will feel the dampness as you listen to stories of miners’ hardships and the operators’ prosperity. Next, stop at the Pocahontas Cemetery which includes graves that are over 100 years old and a mass grave of coal miners killed in the 1884 mine explosion. At St. Elizabeth’s Roman Catholic Church you will see ten life-sized murals on the ceiling and walls. In Bramwell, once the home of as many as 19 coal millionaires, you will tour two homes and the Presbyterian Church. A Lively Village, union WVSurrounded by rich farm lands and the Allegheny Mountains, his-toric Union was a frequent rest stop for soldiers during the Civil War. A guided tour of the Clark -Wiseman House circa 1810 is one of the more sophisticated structures built during that time period and the Owen Neel House circa 1790 shows the transi-tion from pioneer one room cabins to a comfortable farmhouse. This summer professional theatrical troupe Tailgate Shake-speare will perform Shakespeare’s hilarious comedy Twelfth

Night in at Camp Roanoke on Saturday, August 20. These perfor-mances are brought to you by Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism and tickets can be purchased for the performance only or for both the performance and an Elizabethan dinner is also being offered at an additional charge.

Based in Staunton VA, Tailgate was founded in 2010 by graduate students in the Shakespeare In Performance Program at Mary Baldwin College. Katy Mulvaney, Jeff Chips, Linden Kueck, and Clara Giebel had the idea of creating a theatre company that would perform Shakespeare outdoors with minimal props and no set, allowing them to take their shows on the road anywhere. The cast would also perform live music and serenade the audi-ence with popular songs, while the audience sat in the shade while they ate dinner or perhaps enjoyed a glass of wine. This relaxed atmosphere is the heart of Tailgate Shakespeare’s mission. Tailgate Shakespeare replicates the experience of being in Shake-speare’s original audience, (who after all, originally saw his plays in the open air of the Globe Theatre), with all the fun of a tailgate party added in. The group strives to create fun, fast, and family friendly Shakespeare for audiences around Virginia.

Tailgate’s actors strive to re-create Shakespeare’s original staging conditions. The troupe performs with no set and few props, as Shakespeare’s original actors would have done. In addition, the actors perform only live music with no electronic instruments. The group also believes in gender- blind casting and doubling. Back in Shakespeare’s day all female parts were played by boys but in Tailgate Shakespeare, women frequently play multiple parts including male roles. Each actor and actress may play as many as five parts which shows off the skill and versatility of the troupe.

Tailgate Shakespeare is pleased to return to Roanoke for its sec-ond season with Twelfth Night, the story of a duke’s daughter, Viola, whose ship is wrecked in a strange kingdom ruled by the handsome duke Orsino. To serve the duke, Viola masquerades as a man and unexpectedly falls in love with him. Unfortunately, the Duke is in love with the beautiful countess Olivia, who in turn falls in love with Viola, (believing her to be a boy). Even more compli-cations arise when Viola’s twin brother Sebastian arrives in town, falls in love with the countess, and is mistaken for his sister! Will Viola declare her hidden love, or is she forced to live with him forever as a page, not a wife? Twelfth Night, filled with catchy songs, dozens of colorful characters, and some of Shakespeare’s most beautiful poetry, is guaranteed to put a song in your heart and tickle your funny bone. When — SUMMER registration begins Saturday, June 4 online County Resi-dents only; Monday, June 6 walk-in and phone for County Residents only; and Wednesday, June 8 for non-county residents. Registration will be taken between 8 AM-5 PM each work day at all offices and recreation centers. You can also register during evenings and weekends at selected recreation centers, and online at any time.

How — Registration is on a first come, first pay basis. Registration will be taken until a class is full, or a class is cancelled for insufficient enrollment. You may mail-in, walk-in, or phone-in to any Roanoke County Parks facility or register online at www.RoanokeCountyParks.com.

Payment — Payment is required in full at the time of registration to reserve your space, unless otherwise stated. This policy excludes programs for which payment by installment is available. Payment may be made by VISA, Master-card, Discover Card, check, money order or cash. Make checks payable to: Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism.

Confirmations — Please show up for the first class at the appointed time and place unless you are notified by phone. You will only be notified if your registration cannot be accepted in cases where the class is full or has been cancelled.

If Programs Are Full — Sometimes programs may fill. If this happens, we will gladly add your name to the waiting list. Mail-in registrants will automatically be placed on the list. You will be contacted if a space becomes available.

Weather Cancellation Policy — Recreation programs held in Roanoke County Schools will be cancelled when the Roanoke County Schools close due to inclement weather. Cancellation announcements for all other programs and events held at County Parks, the Brambleton Center, Green Ridge, and Craig Center will be available by calling (540) 387-6455 and online. When possible, closures may be listed on local TV and radio stations.

Refunds — In the event Roanoke County cancels the class, you may elect to receive a refund within 3 weeks. Refunds will not be given after the first session of the class or after the deadline date for trips, tours and special events, unless your place can be filled. A credit may be requested in lieu of a refund. Refunds for charged payments will be made by credit to your charge account.

Registration Periods — Seasonal registration takes place in early Janu-ary, March, June, and September. County Residents may register first and Non-County residents after two days. Early online registration will be available each session for County Residents.
