Belly Dance Class Lakes Area Recreation Auxiliary Room

Instructor: Jeana Rolseth

Raqs Sharqi, also known as belly dance, is an age old dance with

a history as rich as it is diverse and widely misunderstood.

Using natural movements, belly dance is an excellent low impact

work-out. Jeana has been studying this dance form for many

years, and is a solo dancer, a member of Alexandria‟s Ziva

Gypsies, and St. Cloud‟s Noctua Belly Dancers. Classes are for

ladies ages 16 and up.

Beginner Basics & Beyond: Monday evenings are structured

towards ladies curious about the dance, as well as ladies wanting

to brush up on basic moves. Each night will provide something

new including the following: Dance 101 for belly dance,

Beginner Basics & Beyond, Shimmies & Undulations Level 1,

and Traveling & Veil dancing.

isolation drills, combinations, and layering. These classes will

Dog Obedience Training Classes Sponsored by Lakes Area Recreation

Lakes Area Recreation Gym

Lifetime learning experiences are as

important for the canine family

members as for the human members.

Three experienced volunteers provide some of this

continuing education for the canine family members

(and their owner/trainers) by conducting a series of dog

obedience training classes. Each series of classes runs

for six consecutive weeks, and each weekly session has

a separate kindergarten class for puppies and another

class for adult dogs. Only “gentle and reward” training

methods are used.

The curriculum will include socialization, basic

obedience, and when appropriate, behavior problems

will be addressed. The final fifteen minutes of the hour-

long classes include a “recess” period, during which the

dogs and the trainers will develop confidence by having

fun on the agility course, consisting of hurdles, ramps,

tunnels, and a teeter-totter.

Preparing to Volunteer With Dogs

LAR Auxiliary Gym Instructor: Holly Bushard

If you love people and have a friendly and

confident dog, therapy dog work might be

right for you! Therapy dogs visit people in a

variety of settings such as nursing homes, schools, and

hospitals. The goal of the team is to bring comfort and joy

to animal lovers who are separated from their pets. This

class is designed to help owners decide if their dogs are

appropriate for volunteering and to give them the skills

needed to make sure that their visits are safe and rewarding.

Basic obedience skills and a gentle dog are all that you

need to get started. We will practice the obedience skills

that are needed to volunteer and talk about the various

therapy dog organizations that participants can test with

and join. Volunteering with your dog can be one of the

most rewarding things you can do together.

Class # Day Date Time Fee

Rally Dog Obedience

LAR Auxiliary Gym Instructor: Holly Bushard

If you love training your dog and have

already accomplished basic pet manners,

Rally Obedience is the class for you! Rally obedience picks up

where basic obedience leaves off. Rally obedience takes teams

through a constructed course of obedience moves such as sitting,

laying down, turning, and halting. No experience is necessary!

This class will be informal and fun and is intended for people

who have never tried anything like this before. All that is

required is a sense of humor and a love of dogs. By the end of

the class, dogs will be more focused on their handlers, better on

a leash, and able to perform a wide series of commands.

Training for rally obedience requires very little space, making it

an ideal hobby for keeping you and your dog challenged and

engaged through the upcoming winter months. If you have any

questions, please call Holly at 320-491-3671.

Equipment required: A dog, a collar, and a leash!

A note about your child‟s class placement: Please understand that all children acquire skills at different rates. Age is often a

convenient marker used to understand and measure motor skill development, however an increase in age does not automatically

result in improvement or acquisition of a skill. Differences in body size, knowledge, skills, learning styles, personalities, and

experiences all affect individual skill development. It should be expected a child will repeat any given level several times

before fully mastering all skills required at that level.

2012 Swim Lesson Information - Dates

and Times on Page 11 - Page 15!

The swim lessons offered through Lakes Area Recreation are designed to teach participants lifelong swimming skills and

provide training in basic water safety and how to help a swimmer in distress. In

addition to the skills outlined under each level, swim lesson courses are intended to provide a positive learning experience so participants can feel comfortable and enjoy

the water safely.

Because our courses are progressive, with each level building on the skills

previously learned, the prerequisite for each level is the successful demonstration of

the skills from the preceding level, with the exception of Beginner 1. To ensure participants are placed in the appropriate swim level, the first day of lessons is for

skill level assessment. Participants will be expected to successfully demonstrate all

of the completion requirements for the previous level before being able to continue on in the level they are enrolled in.

Participants will be transferred up or down a level that is more appropriate and better suited to meet their skill level and needs if the prerequisite skills are not met the first

day of class. Please try to place your child in the appropriate level! Lakes Area

Recreation does keep track year to year - if you are unsure of your child‟s placement, please call the LAR office and speak with the Aquatics Director.

Swim Lesson Policies: There are no make up lessons.

Minimum enrollment for each class is four students. Classes may be

cancelled or combined due to low enrollment. Lakes Area Recreation

reserves the right to make program and schedule changes, or to cancel a

class with an insufficient amount of participants registered.

All fees are nonrefundable except in the case of illness documented by a

physician or cancellation by Lakes Area Recreation. A transaction fee of

$2 will be assessed for transfers to other sessions or class times that

are not the result of a decision made by Lakes Area Recreation staff.

Parents are not allowed on the pool deck at any time during the course of

lessons – the Aquatic Manager and instructors are available before and after classes for questions and comments.

Scuba Experiences Instructor: Jeff Bosek, Owner of Divers Clubhouse

Come join the fun and adventure with a scuba experience. Enter a new world!

This class will teach you the basics of scuba diving and what it is like to breathe underwater.

If you wish to continue your diving adventure, you may apply the $35

towards an open water diving certification class. The class is for ages

10 yrs. and older. *Must be able to swim. Please provide shoe size

and actual shirt size for body suits.

All EQUIPMENT WILL BE PROVIDED

AT POOL FOR AGES 10 AND UP.
