The long winter is ending and, soon, we will embark on a fun-filled spring and summer. This brochure outlines the many programs available to youth and adults of all ages, interests, and abilities in Waverly and surrounding communities. While we hope that most of these programs can remain outdoors, it is great to have an indoor backup. Instead of canceling programs due to rain or heat index, we simply move them indoors, as we did last year when The W accommodated tennis, soccer, minor league baseball, and Tee Ball on bad-weather days.

Although many youth in our community are involved in AAU and similar programs, we believe it is important to offer activities at the recreational level, allowing children of all abilities and income levels to participate in fun, safe, and educational programs. We invite you to check out all of the programs open to youth and adults. Financial assistance is available to ensure that all Waverly residents can benefit from these opportunities.

Some users have experienced difficulties with online registration on our Web site, and we are working with the company to make this program as user-friendly as possible. Step-by-step instructions are located on Page 3 of this brochure. If you have any problems with online registration, contact Justin Jackson at 319-352-8713 or Jill Eckenrod at 319-352-8716.

We encourage you to participate in the fun activities we have planned for the summer. We also welcome your suggestions for new programs or for improving our existing programs. Contact [email protected] or call us at 319-352-8716. Enjoy the warm weather and the outdoors, but remember, “There’s a place for you at The W.”

Sincerely,

Jim LangelExecutive Director

Health and Wellness Programs Heart Happy

The No. 1 killer in the United States is cardiovascular disease, according to the American Heart Association. There are 61.8 million Americans recovering from a stroke or heart failure, or suffering from high blood pressure, heart defects, hardening of the arteries, and other diseases of the circulatory system. Depending on what stage of disease you have or when you’re finished with cardiac rehab, Heart Happy can assist you with the bridge from the clinical setting to your mainstream workouts. Researchers say strength workouts give patients the stamina they need to move through their daily routines, and it has been shown to reduce demands on the heart when carrying on day-to-day activities. Contact Dawn Wiegmann, RN, for your first assessment. (You will need to bring in your papers from your physician.)

Depending on the time frame of chemotherapy or radiation, the program will have daily walks, the use of fitness balls and dumbbells with resistance from rubber tubing. Classes can vary in length and structure and will be personalized per each person. Contact Dawn Wiegmann, RN, for your first assessment. (You will need to bring in your papers from your physician.)
