Petrinilo and Jose; and sister, Toribia. He is survived by daughter Ida Combs of Kentucky and many nephews and nieces in New Mexico, California and Arizona. Porfi rio spent many years working at the Ray pit as a blaster, blowing up the hillsides for copper ore. Also known as Papa Tio, he was

Today as I went about my daily work, it hit me like a ton of bricks: the hope and promise of a com-munity (in this case a Tri-Community) is staring me right in the face and I think I like it! Perhaps it’s the start of another new year. There is something invigorating about having a clean slate and a chance to do, have and be better this year than in the past. I suddenly realized that here we are doing what we set out to do: provid-ing service to all ages. While some are saying San Manuel and the rest of the Tri-Community is dying a slow death, I believe we are having a rebirth! Specifi cally, I’m speak-ing about what I saw going on today and all this week at the youth center that Adelante Juntos Coalition (AJC) opened in June. The Early Head Start and pre-Kindergarten (ages 3 to 5) children from Mammoth and their moms and teach-ers were enjoying the cen-ter and all of its offerings as they worked on their socialization skills. Earlier in the morning the adult exercise group Muevete, made up of men and women of all ages in-cluding some 70-year-olds, were moving and grooving to their exercise tunes and counting off their reps. How great is that? When school lets out later today teens and adolescents will begin streaming in to enjoy a few hours of safe recreation, music they love and fellowship (aka “chillin’”) with their peers. A bully-free zone where kids quickly learn that co-operation and respect for each other is going to get them the same in return. Where friendly competition

on one of the pool tables or air hockey, ping-pong, foosball, and video games is helping kids learn the benefi t and value in nego-tiating, cooperating and sportsmanship. El Centro Youth Center (ECYC) even offers home-work help and has comput-ers with internet access for study, research or just plain fun like Facebook, Pinter-est, Myspace and other social media. There are board games and lots of room for danc-ing and hacky sack as well as comfy couches and seats for when all a kid wants is a friend to hang out with. Sometimes the laughter I overhear coming from the center makes me giggle out loud. It also reminds me that the promise of a peaceful, safe and healthy community with resources to meet our needs is in-deed achievable, thanks to the moral and fi nancial support of partners like former Pinal County At-torney James Walsh, Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu, Cenpatico and the Arizona Women’s Partnership. The collaboration be-tween Mammoth/San Manuel Unifi ed School District (MSMUSD) and AJC that made the youth center project happen has also created great potential for many more services to be centralized and easily accessible to all. The campus of this former elementary school has the potential of being able to offer the enrichment class-es and workshops that our public schools can no lon-ger provide like music and dance programs. They offer a mariachi group, a dance troupe, and opportunities to learn to play guitar, drums and keyboard to maybe

Upon receiving the Jan. 16 publication of the Miner, we were shocked to see the sex offender notifi cation of a Duane Eugene Shurter living on the 600 block of Vista Sierra. This person is not approved to live in the Rancho San Manuel Mobile Home Park. On Jan. 16 he was notifi ed by Park management that he must vacate the premises immediately, which he did. The rental application provided by the residents of this home did not include his name and information. He moved into the home on Vista Sierra without management’s knowledge. This is a violation of Rancho San Manuel’s Rules and Regulations. On Jan. 17, park management met Lt. Villar of the Pinal County Sheriff’s Department and informed her of the situation. San Manuel resident Liz Starrett was nearly the victim of a phone scam and hopes to alert others about getting coerced into giving personal finance information.

Starrett received a phone call from a man who claimed he was an administrator for the Social Security Admin-istration. The man had her name, address, phone number, and name of the bank where she does business, and he told her he wanted to verify her bank account number to make sure her next check arrived on time.

The man attempted to pres-sure her into giving her bank account number to him. When Starrett told him her check was arriving regularly with no problems and that she would not give him her account number, he hung up.

Starrett has caller ID and the number was from a Texas area code. She wanted to make sure that people in the community are warned about this unlawful scam.

A similar scam appeared in Yavapai County in 2011 when two men called an elderly lady and identified themselves as Social Security employees.

The men provided the woman’s date of birth as

well as name, address, phone number, and the name of her bank in the attempt to make themselves look legitimate. They also provided a toll free number to call if she had any questions.

The woman gave them her bank account number. How-ever, she called the toll-free number after hanging up and when she discovered the num-ber was not in service, she immediately called her bank and told them to freeze her account.

Tax season is upon us and the Internal Revenue Service is warning tax payers about some of the different scams that are tried every year by criminals.

One of the most common phone scams is for someone to call pretending to be from the Internal Revenue Service. They will tell the unsuspect-ing victim that an error was made by their tax preparer and they have more of a refund coming back to them.

They then tell the person that they need to verify the person’s social security num-ber and/or bank account num-ber to send them their check.

This scam is also attempted by email, as the scammers will send an official looking

email claiming they are from the IRS or one of their com-ponents such as the Office of Professional Responsibility or EFTPS.

The scammers will request personal information from you, but the IRS does not ini-tiate contact with taxpayers by email requesting personal or financial information. This in-cludes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels.

By Frank Smith The San Manuel Miners var-sity basketball team has hit the hardwood running in the New Year with five games since the turn of the calendar, picking up wins against Greenfields, Immaculate Heart and Miami while taking tough losses to Ray and Hayden. The Miners started off the year with a trip to Northwest Tucson to face off against the Griffins from Greenfields with many happy returns as the Miners came away with a 47 – 34 win. San Manuel held an 8 – 4 lead after the first quarter then took a 13 – 2 second quarter to take a 21 – 6 lead at the half. In the second half, the Griffins fell 12 -13 in the third quarter and outscored the Miners 16 – 13 in the fourth quarter but gain what was lost in the first half with the Miners taking the win 47 – 34. Leading the Miners was Andy Monfred with 18 points, six rebounds, one assist, and one block. Andre Sierra chipped in with 15 points, five assists, two steals, and two blocks. Andres Moreno scored five points, two rebounds and had two assists. Martin Esquivel scored four points with one steal. Sergio Hernandez scored two points with three rebounds and three assists. Wolf Tubach scored two points with three rebounds and three steals. Demetrious Dietz rounded out the scor-ing with one point and six rebounds. Head coach Ryan Sichting said, “We played a great first half defensively only giving up six points. As a team we struggled scoring early on in the game, but we improved offensively as the game went along. We tried reaching to much in the second half and gave up too many points. I really liked the effort our guys gave during the game.” San Manuel hosted Immacu-late Heart on Jan. 9 and picked up a 20-point win over the Knights, 44 – 24.

The Miners fell behind at the end of the first quarter 5 – 9 but picked up the pace in the second quarter outrunning the Knights 17 – 5 to grab a 22 – 14 lead at the half. In the second half, the Miners finished the third quarter ahead with a 9 – 4 effort and then San Manuel turned it up in the fourth quarter 13 – 6 to take the 44 – 24 win. Andre Sierra led the Miners with 16 points, five rebounds, five assists, one steal and two blocks. Andy Monfred led the way also with 14 points, eight rebounds, one assist, one steal and two blocks. Andres More-no scored eight points with two rebounds and one steal. Alvaro Alvarez scored two points, had one rebound, four assists and two blocks. Deme-trious Dietz had two points, grabbed nine rebounds, one steal and one block. Rounding it out for the Miners, Roberto Lee scored two points with one rebound. Sichting said, “We played exceptionally well against Im-maculate Heart. We shot well from the field, shooting 43 percent from two point field goals and 33 percent from three point field goals. Andre had 16, Andy 14, and Andres with eight. That’s the scoring we need out of those three players. Then we played very good defensively only giv-ing up 24 points in the game. Junior Alvarez played very good defense. We have been putting him on the other teams best player and he has been doing a very good job. Deme-trious Dietz did a good job of rebounding, pulling down nine boards.” On Jan. 11, the Miners hosted the Vandals from Miami, sink-ing the Vandals with a 39 – 31 loss. The Miners took a 12 – 5 lead at the end of the first quar-ter and then a 8 – 7 advantage in the second quarter to take a 20 – 12 lead at halftime. San Manuel again had the lead at the end of the third quarter out-scoring the Vandals 8 – 6 and

Miners hit the hardwood running for the New Yearin the fourth quarter, Miami made a run at the Miners but could not overcome the first three quarters – falling short to the Miners in the quarter 13 – 11 to take the 39 – 31 loss. Leading the way for the Miners was Andre Sierra who scored a team high 25 points with five rebounds and three steals. Andres Moreno scored seven points with three rebounds, one assist and one steal. Andy Monfred scored three points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked three shots. Martin Esquivel scored three points with three rebounds and one assist. Al-varo Alvarez scored one point with three rebounds. Anthony Garcia scored one point and collected one rebound. Sichting said, “This was probably the worst we played this season. It was our third game of the week, but that shouldn’t be an excuse. We struggled at both ends of the court. We had trouble rebound-ing and boxing out. As a team we struggled in shooting from the floor. We somehow pulled off a win, but we will have to play better next week against much better teams (Ray, Hayden, and Pusch Ridge).” The Miners hosted the visit-ing Bearcats from Ray on Jan. 15. San Manuel looked to slow down the run-and-gun style of offense the Bearcats have thrived off this season but the Miners had no answers for the coast-to-coast scoring display as Ray outran the Miners in a 56 – 22 loss. San Manuel stayed within range in the first quarter as the Miners kept pace in the first quarter with the Bearcats finishing the quarter with the lead 12 – 8. In the second quarter the Ray defense held the Miners to three points as the Bearcats scored 13 in the quarter to bump their lead to 25 – 11 at the half. In the third and fourth quar-ters, Ray out ran the Miners as San Manuel scored 11 points in the second half compared to Miners, Page 7

the Bearcats 31 points to take the victory 56 – 22 when the final buzzer rang. Leading the Miners was Andy Monfred with 14 points, five rebounds and one steal. Andres Moreno followed suit with three points and one rebound. Andre Sierra finished with two points and six rebounds. Jordan Peasley chipped in three points and three rebounds. Sichting said, “Ray is a very talented team that understands the game of basketball. They always have multiple guys on the floor that can shoot the ball. They are a very difficult team to defend. They are also very good at scoring in transi-tion. We did a good job of slowing the game down early in the first quarter, but they pulled away in the second and third quarter.” San Manuel made a trip into Winkelman on Jan. 17 to take on the Hayden Lobos. The Lobos looked to avenge an earlier loss to the Miners in San Manuel back on Dec. 19 – and avenge it they did, caging the Miners 39 – 22. The Miners finished the first

By Frank Smith The San Manuel Lady Min-ers varsity basketball is ready to roll in the second half of the 2012-2013 campaign. San Manuel picked up wins over Greenfields, Immacu-late Heart, Miami, Ray and Hayden to start off the second half of the season. The Lady Miners got their start in Tucson on Jan. 8 against the Lady Griffins from Greenfields Country Day School with San Manuel bringing home the 45 – 39 win. The Lady Miners outscored the Lady Griffins 9 – 7 in the first quarter and were out-scored 16 – 14 in the second quarter to sit a 23 -23 tie at the half. In the second half, the Lady Miners were again outscored 10 – 9 in the third quarter but turned it around in the fourth quarter 13 – 6 to regain the lead and secure a 45 – 39 victory.

Leading the Lady Miners was Angelica Zuniga with a double-double scoring 14 points with 14 rebounds to go along with three assists, one steal and one block. Also hit-ting a double-double was An-nalisa Robles who scored 12 points with 13 rebounds to go along with one assist and two blocks. Alexis Garibay scored eight points with two assists and one steal. Felicia Gomez scored five points with six rebounds. Leticia Reidhead scored three points with four rebounds and one assist. Asha Quintero scored two points with four rebounds and three assists. Rounding it out for the Lady Miners was Maximil-liana Lara who scored one point with two rebounds. The Lady Miners hosted Immaculate Heart on Jan. 9, escaping with a narrow 48 – 46 win over the Lady Knights. San Manuel fell behind in the first quarter 13 – 14 but turned

the tide in the second quarter 13 – 8 to take a 26 – 22 half-time lead. In the third quarter the Lady Knights tied up the game 36 – 36 by outscoring the Lady Miners 14 – 10 in the quarter but in the fourth quarter, a single basket would mean the difference in the game as the Lady Miners edged the Lady Griffins by two points 12 – 10 to take the win 48 – 46. Leading the Lady Miners was Angelica Zuniga with 13 points, six rebounds and three steals. Alexis Garibay scored nine points with two assists and one block. To avoid being scammed by telemarketers, the Attorney General’s office recommends that you keep your financial information to yourself. Never give out credit card, checking or savings account informa-tion to anyone who calls.

If you are a few months away from that age, you have prob-ably already received oodles of mail concerning the issue. You should ignore those sent by individual insurance com-panies until you understand the whole picture. And, by the way, it is illegal for an individual agent to contact you by phone. Tell them that and hang up! If you have access to a computer, go to www.medi-care.gov. On that site you can learn about signing up for Medicare, and finding a Medicare Advantage plan which will pay for expenses not covered in the basic pre-mium.

Finding your way through the Medicare forest Some basic principles may help you through this pro-cess :• You are eligible for Medi-care at age 65 and should ap-ply a couple of months before your birthday. All you need is a Social Security number that indicates, by your birthdate,

when you are eligible. If you don ‘t sign up for it in time, you will pay a late enrollment fee every month after you do sign up.• Medicare premiums are ba-sically $104.90 per month for Part B (doctors, ambulance, tests). Part A (hospitalization)

is free if you have paid into Social Security. Until you are old enough to receive Social Security, you will re-ceive a bill. However, if your income is on the low end, you may be eligible for help from Medicaid (AHCCCS in Arizona) or Medicare itself. In Pinal County, contact the Pinal-Gila Council for Senior Citizens: www.pgcsc.org or (520) 836-2758). Note:

Eligibility for certain plans follows county lines so ad-vice given for those living in Pima County may not apply to you.• You will need a Medicare Advantage Plan or other in-surance in addition to Medi-care. These plans require only that you are signed up for Medicare. Your health, your prior conditions all are irrelevant.

• If you receive Veterans ben-efits, usually you don’t need any further insurance.• If you are receiving medical insurance through your em-ployer, their plan will require you to sign up for Medicare at 65 whether you are retiring or not. In most cases you will want to continue under your employers insurance plan, if eligible.• If you work for Federal or State government, you are eligible for very good plans. They may be more expensive than private plans, but they offer more coverage than you can get with all but the most expensive private plans. Get it an keep it.• If not covered by any of the above, you need a private Medicare Advantage plan. Do get one. You simply can-not afford, unless you are extremely lucky or very rich, to go with JUST Medicare these days. Sometimes these plans will not cost much ex-tra: these private plans have been subsidized by Medicare to provide care based on Medicare guidelines. • In any case, for Prescription Drug coverage, you need a private plan. Medicare itself DOES NOT cover prescrip-tions. You can get a “Plan C” which covers medical care and a “Plan D” which covers prescriptions, but in most cases you can get them together in one plan.• To find the private, govern-ment subsidized, plan best suited for you,first find out which plans your best doctors accept. Then go online at the Medicare site (highly recom-mended- get someone to help if you don’t “do” computers). You could also find a good broker who handles multiple kinds of insurance.• Don’t be afraid of HMOs. All the cheapest plans are HMOs. The kinks have been worked out for the most part, If you have problems, you should contact PGCSC, above.

The Crochet and Conver-sation group is once again meeting at the library at 1 p.m. each Thursday. If you are already doing needle-work, this is great chance to relax, knit, crochet, tat or whatever and visit with others. If you have a desire to learn how to do some needlework come on in and

you will find someone will-ing to teach and guide you along. The San Manuel Library is a non-profit corporation overseen by a five-member Board of Trustees. This year, two positions on the board are up for election. The election will be held from Jan. 30 through Feb. 11 in the library and is open to all library cardholders 18 years or older (cards must be presented before vot-ing). Each voter may select two candidates to vote for as a trustee.

This year there are five candidates and there is a small profile about each below. PATTY ATRIAN has been a resident of San Manuel for 35 years. She is married to Jose and they have two daughters and four grand-children. Patty has been on the Library Board for approximately seven years. Many children in the school know her as she often sub-stitutes or volunteers at the schools. RONNIE BUTLER has lived in San Manuel for

23 years. He came from California where he was a plumber. He is married to Nancy. Ronnie volunteers for the library and has served on the library board for six years. RAYMOND VERNE FISCHER and his family moved to San Manuel 40 years ago. He worked for BHP (Magma) for 26 years. Vern has a degree in Geography from BYU University. He too is well known around the community as he substituted for the school district for 35

years. He is a member of the Bishopric of the Latter Day Saints Church. He is married to DeLoris and they have 5 children and 17 grandchildren. He has been a volunteer at the library for approximately two years. SHARON MAT-THEWS has been in San Manuel for 13 years and a volunteer at the library for five years. She has a degree in Library Science. She is married to Carl Mat-thews. Sharon is also Presi-dent of the Relief Society (women’s organization) at

the LDS Church. KENNETH MC-GREW graduated from San Manuel High School in 1957 and then left the community. He returned 43 years ago and worked for BHP (Magma) for 29 years. He minored in Library Sci-ence while in college. He is a Family Search Consultant (genealogy) at the LDS Church. He is married to Chaille and they have three children and seven grand-children. Kenneth has vol-unteered at the library for approximately four years.

Theft of a firearm was reported in the 4900 block of N. Camino Rio, Dudleyville. A concerned citizen reported that a house was on fire in the 19000 block of S. River Rd., Mammoth. Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, Mammoth Police Department and firefighters from Pinal Rural Fire Rescue were dispatched to the scene. It was later determined that it wasn’t a house on fire, but a fire in a fire pit. Burglary was reported in

the 600 block of W. Sunset Ave., Oracle. Vehicle parts were reported missing. A stovetop grease fire was reported in the 38000 block of S. Carefree Dr., SaddleBrooke. Golder Ranch Fire was dispatched to the scene. A fight was reported at the First Avenue Elementary School, San Manuel. There were no injuries and the school handled the discipline. A fire was reported in the 500 block of S. Encina St., San Manuel. A concerned

citizen reported that a trailer was on fire. It was later determined that it was a rubble pile that was on fire, not a home. San Manuel Fire Department was dispatched to the

scene.Jan. 16 Theft was reported in the 600 block of E. Nuestro St., Oracle.Jan. 17 Brian M. Lawrence, 36,

Tucson, was arrested at the San Manuel Bunkhouse on a warrant for interfering with judicial proceedings. He was transported and booked into the Pinal County Jail.

interested in astronomy when he was six years old. His older brother Paul would take him out in the backyard and show him the Indiana night skies. Paul taught him about the sky pointing out planets and constellations to young Mike.

Mike grew up in Seymour, Indiana. In 1961, Mike’s mother gave him an Edmund Scientifi c three-foot Newtonian telescope for Christmas. He now had a closer view of the sky.

Although Mike has gone to bigger and better telescopes he still uses the three-foot telescope on occasion. When Mike was 14 years old, his brother Paul got him a subscription to Sky & Telescope magazine. He has

not missed an issue since the day he received his fi rst magazine.

In fact, he has 40 years worth of these magazines stored away in his collection. He then became an active amateur astronomer.

In 1964, Mike’s brother got him interested in science fi ction. Mike likes all the classic sci-fi authors like Asimov, Clarke, Heinlein, Bradbury and more. As an adult he would meet and get to talk with Ray Bradbury while living in California.

Mike says that he saw a UFO when he was a teenager. By that he meant that he saw a light in the sky making unusual movements that no known aircraft on earth could make. As for the possibility of life on other planets, with billions upon billions of stars

in the universe, Mike said, “odds are, we are not alone.”

One day he watched some planes refueling in mid-air through his telescope. Little did he know that one day he would be in the air doing the same thing.

After high school, Mike

attended the University of Indiana in Bloomington where he received his B.S. in Astrophysics. While an undergraduate, he was able to use Indiana University’s Kirkwood Observatory and their 12-foot refractor telescope.

Kirkwood Observatory is over 100 years old. Mike did his graduate work in meteorology at the University of Wisconsin. After graduating, Mike found another way to observe the sky. It would be from the cockpit of a plane.

Mike enlisted in the United States Air Force and fl ew the A-7D Corsair II as a fi ghter pilot and was an instructor for the T-38 Talon. He would also work as a manager with the Air Force Space Shuttle Program.

After eleven years in the Air Force, he took a job as a Systems Engineer in the aerospace industry in California, where he would later be in management. He also was a civilian fl ight instructor for a while, though he no longer fl ies.

All this time he still had an interest in astronomy but was unable to be as active as he wanted. In 1996 he purchased a Meade ETX-90 telescope and became active again.

He created Weasner’s Mighty ETX Sight which is a popular website for amateur astronomers worldwide. The site provides information on ETX telescopes, tips, exchanges information, provides links and is an important resource for amateur astronomers. This site has won awards from amateur astronomer societies around the country.

Two years ago Mike was interviewed by the New York Times about his work using iPhone space photography through a telescope. He was one of the fi rst to do so on a regular basis.

He has also written a book, Using the Mighty ETX Telescope, which was published by English publishing house Springer-Verlag.

Mike purchased his retirement land in Oracle in 2004. He and R. Laurraine Tutihasi wanted to live in the desert in a rural area but close enough to a city for cultural activities such as plays and operas.

Mike had been stationed at Davis Monathan Air Force Base 30 years ago and was amazed how Tucson had grown. Mike fell in love with

After moving to Oro Valley in 2007 while their house was built, they moved to Oracle in 2009. Mike was more active in astronomy and it was always his dream to have his own observatory. He purchased a Skyshed Pod from a company in Canada.

“First Light” for the Cassiopeia Observatory was on Wednesday August 19, 2009. First Light is the first

time that a new telescope views its first image of the universe, a very exciting time for an astronomer.

The Cassiopea Observatory was named for the constellation Cassiopea. Mike chose the name because the brightest stars in this constellation form the shape of the letter “W” in the sky and at other times of the year it will look like the letter “M”. M and W: Mike Weasner!

The observatory has a Meade eight-foot LX200-ACF telescope. Mike also has a number of other telescopes that he uses. While looking at

the stars, Mike likes to listen to classical music or science fiction movie soundtracks. He also enjoys listening to the old radio broadcasts from the 30s and 40s like the Lone Ranger and X Minus One.

Mike also has a website for the observatory where he shares information and his magnificent photos of the universe. The website is www.mikeweasner.com.

Mike enjoys sharing his love of astronomy. He has worked a booth at the Arizona Science & Astronomy Expo showing telescopes and the SkyShed Pod. He will be at

the 2013 Expo on Nov. 16 and 17 at the Tucson Convention Center.

Last year at The Glow illuminated art festival, he set up some telescopes for star gazing. He has hosted star parties and is willing to work with local schools in showing the kids a little bit about astronomy and star gazing. He said he is willing to work with small groups such as the schools top science students who may show an interest in astronomy.

By John Hernandez At half time at Friday night’s varsity basketball game, the first group of inductees to the San Manuel High School Athletic Hall of Fame was enshrined. Alfred Trejo, Jr., Vice-Principal and Athletic Director at San Manuel High School, introduced the four inductees and read their accomplishments to the crowd. The inaugural group of Hall of Fame members was John Dicus, Greg Parker, Warner Smith and Sheila Baize. Many friends and family were in attendance. Congratulations for this well deserved honor! There will be a more detailed article listing the accomplishments of these Hall of Fame members in next week’s Miner.

Casa Grande, AZ – Sun Life Family Health Center, Pinal County’s largest provider of primary care, received a $600,000 Oral Health grant for the Pinal Regional Partnership Council of the Arizona Early Childhood Development and Health Board (First Things First) in 2011. The FTF grant is used to implement a mobile dental program in Pinal County, bringing dental screenings to many remote communities normally isolated from dental services. The FTF grant has helped Sun Life Family Health Center provide comprehensive dental screenings and fluoride varnish application, as well as oral health education, to children birth to five years of age, as well as prenatal women. With these funds Sun Life has purchased a Mobile Dental Van to deliver these services to communities all throughout Pinal County. Sun Life will be holding Mobile Dental Van Open Houses at each office Jan. 17-25. The Open House events are free and open to the public and will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Open House dates are as follows:• Jan. 24 – San Manuel Family Practice - 23 McNab Parkway• Jan. 24 – Oracle Family Practice - 1870 W.
