Editor, San Manuel Miner: I am very disappointed in the Miner and San Manuel High’s coverage of the Cross Country season. Cross Country had their last meet in Marana on Oct. 29 and nothing was mentioned about it. The only thing listed in the Nov. 2 Miner was a picture with a small caption underneath,

from the last home meet on Oct. 19. These kids worked very hard and ran all over San Manuel and half of Arizona. I am sure most people saw them running around town. They deserve the same recognition as the swim team and football teams. They did very well and I am proud of them.

/s/ Shawna GonzalesEditor’s Note: Our sports reporter relies on the coaches of the various teams to provide information on events, especially if they take place out of town. If the coaches do not respond to queries before the printing deadline, then we are unable to include the information in the Miner.

Editor, San Manuel Miner: I feel sorry for the children as they are the ones who will continue to suffer because the Oracle School Bond did not pass. I feel sad for those adults who didn’t have their priorities in order and vote “yes” for improvements on the children’s behalf. You know, a new building that isn’t falling down; a new school bus that is safer and running better, etc. It is truly devastating that there are so many selfish people in this world who have what they want - comfortable homes, a nice life, but who do not care about the future. How tragic. My husband and I have no guilt over the outcome. We worked very hard, very honest, very fair on trying to educate folks on what was the truth. We are concerned about the future for all children. Some people, as we know from the results, are not. It was their choice and it will come back to haunt them some day. I know we as adults do not always make the right decision about some things.

Dear Owner of Salt and Pepa convenience store in San Manuel: In most cases this letter would be welcoming you to our community but on my last visit to your store I saw a display of smoking paraphernalia prominently situated in the front of your store. It is obvious that you do not know or you do not care about the severity of substance abuse in our communities however our Coalition, Adelante Juntos, does know and sees the sad consequences of drug use everyday! Our mission is to: “Mobilize communities to PREVENT substance abuse among youth and ultimately adults and to provide them with the resources and information that empower them to build safe, healthy, drug-

free communities” Perhaps you do not know it but youth in San Manuel have significantly higher rates for lifetime and past 30-day use of alcohol and several drugs. Compared to the county and state rates, junior and senior high students are 17.8% more likely to have use alcohol during their lifetime and 30.5% more likely to have used in the past 30-days. To illustrate:• Alcohol use during lifetime – AZ Schools 70.2%; County 64.2%; State 59.6%.• Alcohol use during the past 30 days – AZ Schools 43.2%; County 36.2%; State 33.1%.• Marijuana use during lifetime – AZ Schools 29.1%; County 31.8%; State 27.4%.• Marijuana use during past 30 days – AZ Schools 11.6%; County 13.9%; State 12.5%.

• Cocaine use during lifetime – AZ Schools 9.3%; County 6.2%; State 5.9%.• Cocaine use during past 30 days – AZ Schools 3.3%; County 2.3%; State 1.9%.• Methamphetamine use during lifetime – AZ Schools 5.6%; County 2.5%; State 2.2%.• Methamphetamine use during past 30 days – AZ Schools 3.2%; County 0.6%; State 0.6%. Additionally the use of cocaine is also higher for lifetime (57.6% greater) and past 30-day use (42.4% greater). Youth also reported using methamphetamine at rates that were 155% greater for lifetime use and 433% higher for past 30-day use. For us here at Adelante Juntos Coalition and for the parents, youth and community at large that we represent, this is unacceptable and we are committed to stopping

Letter to the Editor: An open letter to local business ownerdrug activity in our communities and that includes keeping sales of drug smoking paraphernalia out or our local stores. Please join us in our prevention efforts. We are requesting that you help us care for our youth by being a responsible business person of our community and ask that you remove all of the

current smoking pipes and other paraphernalia from your store. Noman was a well liked and respected businessman when he managed the store and our hope is that you will respect the values of our community to the extent that respect will also be shown back to you. We will be hosting a special meeting of the Adelante Coalition

Membership tomorrow evening at 6 p.m. at our project office at 101 Avenue B in San Manuel, you are welcome to attend as we discuss the very serious issue. Please feel free to call me if you have questions or concerns at 520-385-3028./s/ Betty ChavezProject Director

By John Hernandez On Friday, Oct. 28, Andy and Stefanie Smallhouse hosted the First Avenue Elementary and Mammoth STEM School fourth graders at their Carlink Ranch near Redington. The Smallhouses along with the Arizona Farm Bureau “Agriculture in the Class Room” program and the Redington Natural Resource Conservation District – Environmental Education Center co-sponsored the event. The Arizona Game & Fish Department and the Arizona Beef Council and some volunteers from the area also teamed up to provide a Ranching Education program at the historic ranch. The kids along with their teachers, volunteer chaperones and First Avenue Principal Monica Barajas enjoyed the day at the ranch and learned a lot about ranching, farming and the importance of ranches and farms in our everyday lives. It was quite an educational day for everyone. More than 70 kids participated in the hands on program which the Smallhouses have been providing for a number of years now.

Katie Aikens of the Arizona Farm Bureau and Stefanie Smallhouse visited the students earlier in the week and spoke to them about the life cycle of the pumpkin and prepared them for the fi eld trip. When they arrived at the ranch by bus, the students were welcomed by the Smallhouses and the program volunteers. The students were split up into three groups so they could spend time at different stations that had been set up for them. Mark Hart, Public Information Offi cer for Arizona Game & Fish, had a wildlife display set up. The students got to touch animal pelts and the skulls of wildlife such as a mountain lion, black bear, javelina and coyote while Mark talked about the animals. Mark told them about not feeding animals in the wild and what to do and not do should they come in contact with a mountain lion in the wild. The kids all received a poster of Arizona wildlife and bookmarks. Kathie Schroeder, a licensed wildlife rehabilitator had a live Harris hawk which she showed the kids while talking to them about the Harris

Carlink Ranch hawks and how they hunted in teams and shared their food. Kathie commented on how wonderful the ranching education program is. “It is a fantastic opportunity for the kids and a great experience,” she said. “The Smallhouses are wonderful to be doing this.” Katie Aikens from the Arizona Farm Bureau spoke to the students about farm and ranch animals such as the sheep, goats, pigs, cows and horses. The kids were allowed to pet one of the friendly horses and look at the cows and calves. Katie talked to them about different products that come from goats, pigs and sheep. She showed them some horseshoes and told them why horses were fi tted with them. Katie then guided them to the next station. At the next station, Andy Smallhouse showed the kids how he makes biodiesel from used soy bean cooking oil that he picks up from La Casita restaurants. The biodiesel is used as fuel for the tractors and trucks at the ranch. He asked the kids questions about chemical reactions and recycling which some of them answered. Andy then lined up the kids and let them climb up into one of the large tractors he has. The kids were excited to be in the cab when Andy fi red up the engine and showed them how to operate the tractor. Tiffany Hayes from the Arizona Beef Council was at the next learning station. Besides speaking about food items from beef, Tiffany taught the kids about beef byproducts and other products made from animals. Ninety-nine percent of the cow is used for meat and other products. Products such as gelatin which is used in Jello, some gums, gummy bears and marshmallows, items the kids could identify with. Other items she talked about were medical products, soaps, glue, sweaters (made from sheep’s wool), leather jackets, shaving cream, etc. The kids were also told about products made from cowhide such as baseballs and baseball gloves.

teaches kids about ranch lifeYou can get 144 baseballs from one cowhide (where would the World Series be without cows?). Volleyballs, soccer balls and even some footballs (they are not all pigskins) are made from cowhide. The kids got to play a game where Tiffany described a product to two teams which had to look into

a bag for the product, find it and run it back to Tiffany. The day was not done as the groups each went on a hayride where Stefanie Smallhouse gave them a tour of the ranch and spoke about water conservation. The hayride ended at a pumpkin patch where each kid was allowed to pick their own pumpkin

and take it home with them. The day culminated with a fine lunch prepared and served by Stefanie and some of the volunteers. It included beef brisket, beans, cookies, apples and juice. After the meal Principal Monica Barajas presented the Smallhouses with a certificate of appreciation.

She thanked them for this wonderful program. The kids also showed their appreciation with a shout out and applause for the Smallhouse family and all the volunteers. The teachers also presented Stefanie with some flowers earlier in the day. The other volunteers that made this program possible

are Kim Land, JoAnn Land, Mary Smallhouse, Charlie Ffolliott, Bob Evans, Sue Newman, Becky Dunn and Hattie Hedrick. A lot of work went into this program which is a great teaching tool. With the dwindling numbers of students, Andy Smallhouse said he may look into the

Oracle School District participating in the program next year. This is a fabulous program where kids learn about a number of different subjects such as biology, animal husbandry, recycling, conservation, and an appreciation for the hard work farmers and ranchers do everyday to feed our country.

The Club – Over The Top RC – is based out of San Manuel and will be organizing workshops, fundraising and a Cars for Kids program. With the help of Community Schools, organizers have secured

New RC Track and Club for the Tri-Community area

a site for an Off Road RC track able to run 1/10 and 1/8 scale cars/trucks. This track is completely funded by volunteers. Fundraising is needed to raise money for the fence, timing system and lane markers. Once the track is complete the group can move forward with the Cars for Kids program. If you are interested in joining or helping with the track build please contact us at [email protected]. Find us on FaceBook under Over The Top RC, where weekly updates will be provided.Cars for Kids Program This program works by donations from fellow RC enthusiast which donate parts for a selected car in the program. Once enough parts are collected, it will be used in the club for the Cars for Kids Program. Each kit when complete will be assigned to a child and, with the help of a sponsor in the club, they will be able to learn how to build and maintain the car.

El Centro Teen and Youth Center in San Manuel. The fi nancial contribution is one of several Community Reinvestment Awards being given by Cenpatico throughout its Arizona service areas. “At Cenpatico, we are dedicated to being a partner with our local communities and are always looking for

opportunities to give back,” said Terry Stevens, Chief Executive Offi cer of Cenpatico of Arizona. “Our Community Reinvestment Awards are just one way we are improving lives in the communities we serve.” As part of its new contracts with the Arizona Department of Health Services, Cenpatico

committed to giving back a percentage of its after-tax profi ts for community reinvestment. Earlier this year, Cenpatico sought proposals from community organizations to fund worthwhile projects. Cenpatico is the Regional Behavioral Health Authority for Cochise, Gila, Graham, Greenlee, La Paz, Pinal,

Santa Cruz and Yuma counties. Cenpatico Behavioral Health of Arizona (Cenpatico) services are funded through a contract with the Arizona Department of Health Service/Division of Behavioral Health Services (ADHS/DBHS) and AHCCCS. cued Saturday from Pepper-sauce Cave after falling and injuring his leg. According to Pinal County Sheriff’s Public Informa-tion Offi cer Elias Johnson, PCSO received a 911 call from a hiker on Saturday at approximately 12:22 p.m. who advised that the boy had been found injured in the cave which is on the north side of Mount Lemmon. The teen was approximately 50 feet deep in the cave when he fell. As PCSO responded with local First Responders, a group of citizens fashioned a leg splint from nearby tree branches to support the teen’s injured leg. Utilizing a plastic picnic table as a stretcher, the citizens secured the boy with

a tarp and successfully car-ried him from the cave to the nearby trailhead to meet fi rst responders. Once at the trailhead, John-son said, a PCSO deputy ad-ministered fi rst aid but could not determine if the boy’s leg was broken or dislocated. Be-cause the teen showed signs of hypothermia and shock, a helicopter was called to the Peppersauce Campground to transport the boy to the hos-pital. With help from members with the Oracle Fire Depart-ment and personnel from Tri-City Ambulance, the teen was loaded onto the helicopter and fl own out. Thanks to efforts and cour-age demonstrated by the brave citizens, the total time of the rescue took less than one hour.

On Wednesday, Nov. 23, Claire and Steve Johnson will again offer a free Thanksgiving meal to anyone who comes to her Café and Art Gallery in Catalina. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. visitors will be treated to a traditional Thanksgiving

meal comprised of fresh roasted turkey, homemade dressing, fresh green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry relish, sweet potatoes, rolls and butter, plus assorted pies. Claire’s Café and Art Gallery has been in the

same Catalina location, 16140 North Oracle Road, for 26 years. She began offering a free Thanksgiving dinner just a couple of years after she opened. Claire says,” This is our gift to the community.” This gift has a retail value of up to

$18.95 per person. She will accept cash donations for the Catalina Community Food Bank. More than 550 meals were served in 2010 and Claire and Steve hope to serve even more this year. Gluten-free items available upon request.

It is almost Thanksgiving, and the First Baptist Church of San Manuel invites everyone to celebrate the season at a very special

event. Wednesday, Nov. 16, is the annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner. The turkey and dressing are

donated and prepared by church members. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy the fun and fellowship. Just bring a salad, vegetable, or

dessert dish or two to add to the meal. It is always a fun time and everyone is invited whether they normally attend First Baptist or not. The meal

begins at 6 p.m. Plan to join your neighbors at First Baptist Church for this celebration. The First Baptist Church is located at

First and Nichols Avenues in San Manuel. For more information, or transportation to any worship service, call 385-4655.

brainer”. But then he has put education first in his life for 38 plus years. He has tried to make a positive difference for children in this world. Folks had a chance to make a difference also with this school bond election, but they chose not to. I can only look at them and feel sorry for them, as most of them were not given the true facts. They would rather have believed untruths, and ugly campaigning before actually studying what the truth was. Let them enjoy their extra margarita a month as they whispered to each other at a meeting I attended; let them enjoy their extra lunch out a month, and some day they will wake up to reality. Some day they might even take a tour of the school district and learn the truth; although this probably won’t happen. No one wants to study their mistakes. Or even remember them, or think about them. I saved my money to have the cafeteria painted this past summer so the kids could eat in a nice, clean place. And also hoping the bond would pass and they would have a new kitchen to go with the better looking cafeteria. It’s OK. I have no regrets. I will now save up to have the gym painted. I love sports and I want the kids to have a good looking place to shoot that basket in. I will continue to contribute what I can to make life better for the children who attend Oracle School District. I know in my heart what is right and what is not. Life has taught me that. Receiving a Certificate of Excellence, local Oracle business Hewitt Consulting Enterprises, LLC had much to be proud of, collectively.
