Long queues, long waiting hours and longlists of “excuses” why grant applicants

must come back to the South African SocialSecurity Agency (SASSA) office in Uitenha-ge, are all but good service delivery, especial-ly to people who already are in financialneed.

This is according to Hannes Bekker fromthe Kruisrivier Residents Association, whoafter numerous complaints from members,visited the SASSA office himself on severaloccasions to monitor the situation.

“I know of an incident where an applicantwent to the office at 03:00 on November 27thas it was indicated that the person had to re-turn on this date.

“When eventually assisted the person wastold ‘sorry come back on December 10th’.The same happened and the person was told‘sorry come back on the 17th’, then ‘comeback January 6th’, then January 17th, Janu-ary 24th and then January 31st,” saidBekker.

According to Bekker the reasons given forthe person to come back varies from “it’sBhisho’s fault, the officer is off sick, the offic-er’s child is sick” to “the officer is on leave.”

“Grant applicants are being sent backhome on an average of 3 to 8 times before fi-nalizing the procedures. SASSA officialssaid they can only assist 120 persons per dayand I’ve counted that from January 21st to27th a total of 495 grant applicants were notbeing assisted.”

Bekker said other issues raised by grantapplicants include the lack of ablution facili-ties, rudeness by some of the SASSA person-nel and no effective management of thequeues.

“In an incident an applicant arrived at23:00 the previous day just to be first in thequeue the next morning. Late arrivals willwithout any concern jump the queue. I’veseen a person that was 30th in the queue andthen later ended at 91st. This is not fair.”

Other interesting statistics asmonitoredby Bekker include:

.Tuesday, January 21st - first person ar-rived at 03:00. At 06:00 there were 106 peoplein the queue; 07:00 - 198 people and 08:30 - 284people.

.Wed., January 22nd - first person ar-rived 02:30. At 07:00 the SASSA office was fullhouse with 92 people waiting outside. After10:00 a total of 82 people were sent home.

.Thursday, January 23rd - first personarrived 23:00 (previous night). At 07:00 - 133people; 08:00 - 187 people.

.Friday, January 24th - first person ar-rived 00:30. At 06:30 - 94 people in the queue;08:30 - 192 people.

A fitter is an engineering specialist who installs,maintains and/or repairs machines, plant andequipment for a large variety of industries such asmanufacturing, aeronautical, maritime, mining, foodprocessing, amusement parks, and medical servic-es (eg. hospitals). Without skilled fitters, these me-chanical technology-based industries would grindto a halt. After completing this apprenticeship suc-cessfully, the qualified artisan will have to choosethe industry in which they would prefer to work.

Highly skilled welders are increasingly in demanddue to modern advancements in production pro-cesses and materials. They need to be proficient ina wide variety of welding techniques and capable ofcontinually producing high quality welds in often dif-ficult conditions. Qualified welders can look forwardto a variety of interesting opportunities in a widerange of industries.

THE construction of Jeffreys Bay WindFarm is forging ahead, with 50 of the 60 windturbines already erected! energy is converted to mechanical energythrough the turning turbine blades.)The turbine blades transfer this mechanicalenergy via the shaft and gearbox (the largebox on top) to the electrical generator thatturns the mechanical energy into electricalenergy.)This electrical energy is then made gridcompatible.)The grid compatible energy is fed from theWind Turbines via a network of undergroundcables across the wind farm to the project sub-station. The substation forms the connectionpoint between our “local” wind farm grid andEskom’s national grid.)The Eskom grid then “supplies” this energyto the consumers.

It is a special year for Uitenhage HighSchool as over the course of the next few

months, all the school’s stakeholders, pastand present, will be celebrating 50 yearssince it was established in 1964.

The theme of the exhibition is “In conversa-tion: Nelson Mandela & Albert Luthuli” andit was designed to celebrate 90 years ofNelsonMandela’s life and 50 years since Chief AlbertLuthuli received the Nobel Peace Prize.

“It also celebrates the lives of two icons ofthe liberation struggle, both former Presi-dents of the ANC and Nobel Peace Prize win-

The 18 year old Rameez Nellfrom Uitenhage is the latest lo-cal rugby player who has

joined one of the country’s top rugbyacademies.

“It is an opportunity of a lifetimeand I am excitingly looking forwardto starting a professional rugbycareer,” said Rameez Nell to the UDNews prior to leaving for Durban tojoin the Sharks Rugby Academy.

Rameez, a former Bergsig Schoolfull back is fast and unpredictable onthe field and has a unique way of“weaving” through his opponents.He represented Eastern Provinceduring the 2013 LSEN Craven Weekand was nominated as the Player ofthe Tournament. He was also includ-ed in the national LSEN rugby teamwhich participated in Durban.

Rameez’s father, Richard Nell,once also a formidable rugby playerand eighth man representing SARUin the late 1970s is proud of his son.

“It is very emotional for me. I amproud of Rameez and really hope thathe will establish himself as a profes-sional rugby player. He has a naturalflair, exciting style and good rugbysense to create opportunities on thefield and I like that,” said Richard.

As a u.19 Sharks player, Rameezwill be coached by former Springbokrugby player - who also hails fromUitenhage - Deon Kayser. Interest-ingly, Kayser’s father, Dan Kayseronce played alongside Richard Nellin their heydays of rugby.

In making Rameez’s rugby dreamcome true, funds had to be raised andthe Uitenhage community did theNell like-father-like-son duo proud.

Uitenhage is home to what might be one ofthe country’s oldest tennis clubs where thiselegant sport has been enjoyed for the past120 years.

Earliest records regarding tennis beingplayed in Uitenhage date back to 1886 whena tournamentwas held at the Drostdy courts.They belonged to Mr E Philpott, a Civil Com-missioner andResidentMagistratewho laterpresented these Drostdy courts to the townas Uitenhage’s first tennis courts and theywere named “Eucalyptus Tennis Courts”.

These courts were situated off Constitu-tion Road.

According to Derrick Manefeldt, chairper-son of the Drostdy Tennis Club, the club laterwere relocated to the then newly built courtsat the Drostdy Recreation Club in Prince Ed-ward Street where the tennis club operatedfor many years before moving to the Magen-nis Park courts where it currently is.

“These courts in Magennis Park have re-

cently been resurfaced and are in an excel-lent condition. The tennis club is situated ina tranquil environmentwhereweenjoy sometough games of tennis in a good spirit.”

The courts in Magennis Park were built in1894 and itwasknownas the “SouthernCrossLawn Tennis & Croquet Club”. During 1961four of the courts were completely recon-structed with the new construction tech-nique of all weather surfaces.

The current clubhouse was built during1972 thanks to the then chairman TrevorWhitfield and Peter Myburg. This was builtpartly on the foundation of the old pavilionwhich was completed in 1928.

OnMarch 1st the Ro-tary Club of PortElizabeth South willhost a swimmara-thon at GreyHigh in-door pool as part ofthe global swimmingevent in aid of theStop Polio Now cam-paign. Other schoolsand the public arewelcome to partici-pate. The event willbe held from 12:00 to14:00. All proceedswill be towards thepolio campaign.
