Mondeor SAPS Sector 1 CPF received generous donations on Thursday 02 June at SOS Protec Sure’s Gillview Head Office which will enable them to keep fighting crime in the community.SOS Protec Sure donated a co-branded Chevrolet Spark vehicle to Sector 1 CPF which will be used to patrol the suburbs of Glenvista, Glenanda, Bassonia, Mulbarton and Liefde-en-Vrede.“The sponsored car will primarily be used by our volunteer neighbourhood watch pa-trollers in daily patrols. The car will also be used by the Sector 1 Victim Support Unit to call on victims of crime and by the Domestic Watch Program,” said Mondeor SAPS Sec-tor 1 CPF Chairman, Mike Fontes.The vehicle has been fitted out to serve the
CPF’s needs and includes a comprehensive level 3 first aid kit, sponsored by ER24, as well as a dashcam, Tom Tom navigation de-vice, traffic control equipment, evidence kits, a trauma kit, basic fire fighting equip-ment and a two-way radio.“On behalf of all our volunteers and the communities we serve, I extend a heartfelt thanks to SOS Protec Sure and all our sponsors. DUMPING AND SAPS
Does anyone know if there is a specific section of SAPS which deals with dumping?I witnessed another incident of dumping in the Southdale area in the vicinity of Pikitup but further up the road at the top of the hill
at the place where the road veers to the right. It was a white bakkie. I confronted the “dumpees” but was ignored. Unfortunately I did not get a photo.

Dear Norma, I contacted Mondeor SAPS Constable Elizabeth Mnguni regarding SAPS’ role in illegal dumping. According to Constable Mnguni, SAPS can issue fines to illegal dumpers if they are caught red-handed. This is a JMPD By-law.
Last week I was faced with a dilemma – I had to choose between two of my great-est loves: outer space and Michael Jack-son.On Wednesday 01 June, I was invited to the exclusive media launch of the space exploration exhibition Gateway to Space: The Exhibition as well as the opening night performance of Europe’s number 1 Michael Jackson tribute show Forever Jackson.And so I had to make the big decision of se-lecting which event to attend – a task I found most difficult. I took a big leap (see what I did there?) and went with Gateway to Space. Of course, I couldn’t miss out on the King of Pop and arranged tickets to see the show this past Saturday.Added to this, I got the unique opportunity to interview Robin Parsons, the live lead vocal of Forever Jackson who replicates MJ down to a tee.So everything came together in the end, feel-ing extremely happy! Dear Candace, foam has been polluting the stream here in Chelverton Avenue, Mondeor now for the past week. The foam is visible every morning from 07:00am and then later during the day it stops.This foam must be coming from the top near Naturena. It must be a company who are sending all their chemicals
down the stream into the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve.Can you please investigate this matter as you did with the
article titled ‘Wemmer Pan oil spill no accident, says DA’ which was published on page 5 in the tame TIMES, dated Tuesday 10 May 2016. Please do something to stop the culprits from polluting this beloved stream?
EDITOR’S RESPONSE: Dear Anandi, thank you for bringing this to my attention. I have contacted Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo regarding this.
After numerous attempts to inform the Housing Department regarding the sewage leak at Drusana Court in South Hills, the resident is feeling really despondent.The resident said she had reported this problem in October 2015.On visiting the property I could not believe what I saw. Human faeces was scattered all over the yard, while dirty water was laying stagnant, attracting mosquitoes.The tenant complained that she is very worried about the little children; aged from three to 12 years of age; that are living with her.She cannot let them play in the yard because she fears that they might become sick.She also said that various people have come from the Housing Department to take photos, but nothing gets done to
solve the problem.She is appealing to the department to just fix the problem.As the Councillor of Ward 57 I have been in touch with the department and they assured me that the leaking drain will be fixed but sadly they could not give a specific date or time.

Alberton Child Welfare hosted a high-end fundraising winter dinner on Friday 03 June at Thaba Eco Hotel.Held in conjunction with leading South African wine and spirits producer KWV and musical band A Touch of Class, the event was attended by top businesses and leading members of the local community.Guests were treated to a three course meal coupled with a sponsored brandy, chocolate and fudge tasting by KWV, as well as live entertainment by A Touch of Class. “Alberton Child Welfare has been serving vulnerable families and children for over
75 years. The reason for our existence is to preserve and strengthen families,” said Alberton Child Welfare Chairman Martin Kroukamp.Kroukamp noted that Alberton Child Welfare is going through a difficult financial crisis, adding that fundraisers such as this truly assist the organisation in its endeavours to help the community.More than R50 000 was raised through the sold tickets alone for the event. A man, believed to be in his 30s, was left critically injured on the afternoon of Tuesday 31 May after he was knocked off his bicycle on Amanda Avenue in Glenanda.Paramedics from the ER24 Johannesburg South branch arrived on the scene and found both the cyclist and his bicycle in the middle of the road, said ER24 Spokesperson Russel Meiring.“A light motor vehicle had stopped off to the side of the road, roughly 10 metres away from the cyclist. On assessment of the
cyclist, paramedics discovered that the man had sustained numerous injuries, leaving him in a critical condition,” said Meiring.ER24 paramedics immediately began their treatment and initiated multiple advanced life support interventions. Once treated, the patient was transported under advanced life support supervision to Baragwana Hospital for urgent treatment. “The driver of the light motor vehicle was fortunate to escape injury. Local authorities were on scene to conduct an investigation,” noted Meiring.

My wife and I have always been reasonably proud of our general health and fitness, and have been fairly active members of our local gym over several years. Looking back over the years, when I got tired of trying to find squash partners, I took up road running to keep up my fitness levels. I really liked the idea of just me, the open road, a pair of takkies, and not being reliant on anyone else to play sport with. I was 46-years-old at the time.This arrangement worked pretty well for a while as I sought out further challenges. Of course the Comrades Marathon was all the talk at the running club I had joined and nobody was considered a ‘real’ runner unless you had run a Comrades.And so, after much training (I mean, lots of training), I set out from Pietermaritzburg one frosty morning on the road to Durban. I won’t bore you with all the painful details – suffice to say, I finished my first Comrades at the third attempt.The running kept my weight down and I became extremely fit – and I liked that feeling. Several Comrades later my wife also took up road running and you would find us out and about on early morning training runs and various marathons.We became socially active at the running club, and so, for many years throughout our fifties we tackled races and runs all over the country and often used our fitness hobby as an excuse to travel and explore new places, runs and challenges – and we’ve got the medals and t-shirts to prove it! Where we got all that energy from, I’ll never know.Small injury niggles set in – nothing serious at first, mind you, we could always run it off –and as the body aged we got a little slower.
It became harder to qualify for Comrades so we pushed ourselves, probably beyond our real capabilities, and the injuries returned and slowly my knees rejected me and various joints and body parts followed suit. Listen to your body, they say – we did and we didn’t, but eventually we had to!So we cut down on our serious running activities and became ‘walkers’ – training around the scenic hills of Mondeor, yet still participating in races, including the 42km of the 702 Walk The Talk, which we completed several years running – even when the distance was reduced to 30km. Our last official run was at the Two Oceans Half Marathon in Cape Town four years ago, when I managed to hobble across the finish line with two elastic knee bandages, just inside the three hour qualifying mark.It was the end of an era. All good things eventually come to an end, and we are now happily retired and grandparents – five times over. Time to re-evaluate our lives and priorities and settle down to a slower pace of life. Our married lives might well have started off as a sprinting race but as we get nearer to our golden anniversary, we realised life was really a steady marathon. Till the next time.
