The inimitable, always enter-taining, highly versatile yet often outspoken Steve Hofmeyr is heading to Carnival City this December to promote his newest album, Toeka 3.The artist, who recently celebrated 25 years in music, has released the long-awaited third album in the successful Toeka-series, reinforcing his reputation as one of the hardest working, critically and commercially acclaimed South African artists.Hofmeyr has always been an advocate of paying tribute to great legends from the past (and present), which is what initially led to his multi-platinum award-winning Toeka-series. Nine years ago I started at a community newspaper as a wet-behind-the-ears reporter with dreams of grandeur.

Little did I know the community news bug would bite and my dreams of foreign correspondence, writing for a magazine

or that of making a name for myself in radio would fade away.

I spent almost eight years at that paper and only quit in order to spend a year at home with my little girl.

When opportunity knocked and I got the chance to re-enter the world of community journalism I grabbed on to it with

both hands.

I hope that I can fill the void left by my predecessor, Amy-Mae Campbell, and that we can build just as great a relationship.

Correctional Services Deputy Minister Thabang Makwetla paid a visit to the Modderbee Correctional Centre in Modder East last Monday as part of the government’s plan to improve service delivery. To date, the Deputy Minister has visited correctional centres in the Northern Cape, Free State and Gauteng. According to the Department of Correctional Services, the visits are about moving the Department from a strictly rules-bound approach that hinders the delivery of services to an approach that encourages innovation and is results-driven.During the visit to the Modderbee Correctional Centre, Deputy Minister Makwetla was taken through the facility and also interacted with the inmates. “Use the time you have constructively,” the Deputy Minister said to the inmates, who are taught various skills, like bricklaying and carpentry, at the centre.Some of the inmates have also registered with the Department of Basic Education to complete their studies.The Deputy Minister urged the inmates to stay on their best behaviour while serving their time so that they do not end up staying there longer than necessary. “You are not supposed to stay here longer than you are supposed to. You are supposed to be with your families. If you want South Africa to be a free country, it depends on you,” he said.Modderbee Correctional Centre is one of the centres involved in community and poverty alleviation projects in Ekurhuleni. Some of the projects the inmates participated in

included the renovation of the house of the late Councillor Mbete in Etwatwa, as well as the renovation of Zikhathele High School in Devon.The centre also donates sanitary towels and bath soap regularly to girl children at Sinaba High School in Etwatwa. It has adopted the Ria Day Care Centre as well, where inmates assist with cleaning and donations of groceries and toys on a regular basis. The cleaning and renovation projects involve offenders and this is aimed at ensuring that they contribute positively to their communities as part of their rehabilitation and reintegration programmes.

FOR REHABILITATION: Deputy Minister Thabang Makwetla

Until recently, the lonely, the friendless and the unfriended could count on at least one source of regular and prolific correspondence – Sanral. With the current post office strike in force, however, even that once reliable supplier of evidence that someone paid attention to one’s whereabouts and cared enough to send a steady stream of badly taken snapshots has been stopped in its tracks. With a backlog of 11,4 million items at one of the main Johannesburg depots according to the Sunday Times, Sanral invoices will probably not be delivered before January, which will probably mean the longest interruption in postal services in decades, if not centuries. Since 1500, when a Portuguese captain left a letter in a milkwood tree in Mosselbay that was later delivered to Portugal by a passing ship, the post office has been part of South African society. It was formalised in 1853 with the first South African stamp, the famous Cape Triangular Stamp, and it was not long before mail delivery became an integral part of social and business life, being generally regarded as a reliable and trustworthy service. In 1905, the largest diamond in the world was sent to London by ordinary snail mail – without tracking numbers, without registration and without insurance. Although in recent years there has a been a worldwide decline in the demand for traditional postal services as a result of fax machines, email, SMSes, social media and WhatsApp; the South African Post Office (SAPO) is in a particularly bad way because of negative consumer perceptions about its services, poor financial performance and violent strikes. In 2008, online mail order giant Amazon stopped using SAPO because of the large number of its parcels that went missing. Last month, national Parliament

learned that at the end of September the post office had already overspent its budget for the current financial year by half a billion rand and that, while it made a nett after-tax profit of R377 million in 2007-2008, in the 2013-2014 year it has seen a loss of R359 million. The current postal workers’ strike, which has seen violence in Randburg, Rosebank and Robertsham, has now dragged on for almost three months. Should the SAPO simply give up and close down the rest of its premises? Should this very troubled SOE be privatised? Or should government try to turn the post office around? There are some very good reasons to fix the SAPO. Firstly, it has 23 000 workers. Although 24 top dogs received hefty 26% increases in the past financial year, a mail handler interviewed by the Sunday Times who has worked for SAPO for 18 years as a casual worker reported earning a basic salary of only R3 500 a month. [http://www.fin24.com/Tech/Opinion/Who-really-needs-the-Post-Office-anyway-20141028] Secondly, many vulnerable and needy South Africans who cannot access couriers require medicines, study materials and important documents to be delivered reliably and affordably. Thirdly, traffic congestion in large urban centres is such that we cannot afford more couriers on our roads. Fourthly, many mail order businesses could be started up easily and cheaply using a website and a trustworthy national postal service (Amazon began in a garage). Fifthly, a well-run post office would be a source of national pride. Christmas will be an interesting test for the SAPO; but, in the current circumstances, it is unlikely that they will be sending out a bumper crop of gifts, parcels and Christmas cards this year.

Protect your sta during a robbery

Boksburg North SAPS Captain Garon Sage’s vigilance paid off when he caught three suspects in possession of possible stolen goods - while on his way to work.Capt Sage was travelling to the police station when he saw three pedestrians pushing a black wheelie-bin. He could see that the bin was heavy and his cop instincts prompted him to investigate, whereupon he found the bin full of possibly stolen motor vehicle parts, radios, motor

vehicle batteries, and plenty of tools. One bag contained possible house-breaking and motor vehicle theft tools, gloves and beanies.

The three suspects, two men and a woman, were arrested and taken to Boksburg North SAPS. The case is still being investigated.

CAUGHT: Three suspects were arrested after being found in possession of possible stolen goods.

Detectives from Boksburg, Boksburg North and Reiger Park, as well as Brakpan and Tsakane, attended the Brakpan Cluster Detectives Imbizo at Carnival City last Tuesday.The event was held for the detectives of the five stations in the cluster, in recognition of their consecutive four-star status on the 2014 efficiency index system.The Provincial Detective Commander Brigadier Johan Ndlovu, Cluster Commander Brigadier Johan van der Westhuizen, and the Cluster Detective

Coordinator Lieutenant Colonel Abraham Modise were present and welcomed everyone to the event.Brig van der Westhuizen applauded the detectives for their excellent service to the community.“This event is only the spark for bigger things to come in the near future. They will strive for an even more prestigious event to be held next year,” says Lt Col Juanita Coetzer, communications officer for the Boksburg North SAPS.“It was said that the detective’s work is like

a river, not always running smoothly. Like a river, it has bends and rocks in it that have to be overcome by hard work,” she said.Senior State Prosecutor Advocate Henk Strydom attended the event and was thanked for the important role he plays in the detectives’ work. Certificates of appreciation were handed over to the five stations’ detectives. Brig van der Westhuizen gave special thanks to Lt Col Modise, Captain Rudie du Plessis and Senior Administrations Clerk Dudu Sithole for their efforts.

The robbery of a business can leave employees traumatised, injured or, in the worst-case scenario, dead. “Injuries or death during an attack are a business-ow ner’s worst nightmare,” Grant Dunnington, CEO of SBV Services said. “By their very nature, robberies are terrifying and unpredictable and, while no one knows exactly what will happen when violence is aimed at your business, it’s crucial that your employees are empowered to reduce the chances of people being killed. Beyond cash management solutions, at SBV Services we believe in protecting human life and strive to empower the business community with knowledge about how to save lives when under attack.”Preparing your employees for a robbery sounds easier said than done, but it is possible. The first step is to ensure that all employees have been taught how to use all of the security features at a

business’s premises. While this is done as a preventative measure, it is imperative that the training does not create a sense of unease or panic.During a robbery, employees should remember the following:• Stay calm. Resistance could provoke

the attackers into becoming aggressive, which could only result in tragedy;

• Follow the perpetrators’ instructions to the letter. It is human nature for people to volunteer to do more than has been asked of them, just to get the ordeal over with as quickly as possible. Robbers, however, often interpret such behaviour as a trap, causing them to panic;

• Should your employees need to move around in response to the attackers’ instructions, they must vocalize every action while keeping their hands in full view. If they tell the robbers exactly what they are about to do, the robbers will not

think they are being unco-operative; • Stay alert. Mentally recording everything

you can about the robbers – their races, ages, clothing, eye colour or distinctive features such as tattoos and piercings, as well as everything they touch (should they not be wearing gloves), will help to catch the perpetrators after the event;

• When the robbers are about to leave or are leaving, do not look them in the eye or try to run after them;

• As soon as they leave, ensure that everyone at the premises is safe; go into a secure location or lock up the premises to call the police – just in case the robbers come back;

• Ask everyone who witnessed the incident to stay put until the police arrive and have taken statements;

• While waiting for the police, leave the crime scene exactly as it was left by the robbers.

By Lizeth KotzeIt is not just happening somewhere else, or on the other side of town. It is happening in every neighbourhood. The drug called “nyaope” is rapidly gaining a strangle-hold on the youth of Gauteng, whenever and wherever they are.Nyaope consists mainly of marijuana and heroin, which is what makes it so addictive. Costing between R35 and R40 a straw, nyaope is an expensive habit to support and is therefore associated with crime, theft and extreme violence.Nyaope has both physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms. The main symptoms of withdrawal are: muscle spasms and pain; stomach cramps; flu-like symptoms.Parents are encouraged to note any marked changes in their children’s behaviour and health. Signs that could indicate drug abuse are: drowsiness; mood swings and self-centredness; low levels of motivation; loss of a sense of time; loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities; lack of personal hygiene.If you suspect your child is abusing drugs, you can obtain multi-drug tests from SANCA and pharmacies. These tests come with instructions and can be conducted in the privacy of your own home.

“ANC wants media control”

The South African press is facing huge pressure from the ANC, which wants “total control” of the media, Naspers chairman Ton Vosloo told the Cape Town Press Club last week. “Government and the ANC, through its national democratic revolution, wants total control,” he said. SA’s government has been regularly criticised in recent years for attacks on the press, particularly after pushing the Secrecy Bill through Parliament. It has yet to be signed into law but would make many aspects of investigative journalism a crime. The party, meanwhile, has repeatedly called on SA’s media to racially transform their ownership. No more knot-tying for ScoutsIt’s been a proud tradition since Baden-Powell first wore the woggle 107 years ago, but the Scouting movement says its leaders no longer need to know how to tie knots. Bosses say modern recruits are too busy earning badges in public relations, circus skills and IT to bother mastering knot-tying. The Boy Scout “Bible” Scouting for Boys in 1915 included a whole section called Saving Lives with Knots, even using an example of three people who died at Niagara Falls who could have been saved if the rescue line dangling from a bridge had been tied properly. “A life may depend on a knot being tied properly,” Baden-Powell wrote in the book.Former Scarborough Scout and bestselling children’s author GP Taylor said: “Scouting changed my life and I found the knot-tying and woodland craft side of it fascinating. We should be getting tough on what Boy Scouts are taught – and tying knots is a very important part of that. It is something we have taken from the past and preserved for the future. That’s important and part of our heritage. This just shows what a pathetic society we are becoming. Baden-Powell will be spinning in his grave. He would be outraged by this.”Source: www.telegraph.co.uk

A grim toll of 370 journalists have been murdered over the past 10 years in direct retaliation for doing their job. An even more alarming statistic is that 90% of their killers have not been brought to justice, according to statistics from the Committee to Protect Journalists. In its report, The road to justice: breaking the cycle of impunity in the killing of journalists, the CPJ argues that governments needs to do much more to catch the killers. Israeli mask saves hurt rhino’s visionRAMAT GAN, Israel (AP) — Israeli specialists are easing the suffering of a two-ton rhinoceros with a chronic eye infection by creating a “no-fly zone” with a customised mask.Neta Gueta of the Zoological Center of Tel Aviv-Ramat Gan helped design the mask that stops flies from laying eggs in the eye of the rhino named Tanda. Gueta said Tanda sometimes grew so frustrated with the infection that she rubbed her eye on rough tree bark, only exacerbating the problem.Gueta credits the see-through mask with saving Tanda’s vision after years of failed conventional therapy. She said the idea came from a device used for horses suffering from a

similar condition.The mask is made from “special netting built from special technology against insects so that files can’t lay their eggs inside,” Gueta said on Tuesday. “They can stand on the netting but they can’t lay their eggs.”Fitting Tanda with the device posed multiple challenges, mainly because of her size, but Gueta thinks the rhino has ended up liking the new mask.“At the end of the day I saw that she was cooperating entirely and she understands that this is for her good,” Gueta said.

SA drug mule’s sons stranded in BrazilIt has emerged that the Department of Social Development suspects the two South African boys stranded in Brazil were left on their own for almost a year. The two young brothers were found wandering the streets of Sao Paulo, after their mother was arrested for drug trafficking in Portugal. The brothers, aged seven and 13, landed in South Africa on 6 November. They have been put in a place of safety. This comes after the relative who had been identified by the mother to foster them declined due to other commitments. Social workers are now screening other family members to identify possible foster parents. The boys were taken to a hotel where they will meet Minister Bathabile Dlamini. In the past six years, 18 South African children have been repatriated from foreign countries. Source: www.ewn.co.za.

No request for provincial funeral for LineeThe Presidency says President Jacob Zuma has not received a request letter from the Western Cape government for former rugby player Tinus Linee to be granted a provincial official funeral. This comes after the Presidency received a number of media enquiries following a statement reportedly made by the Western Cape government, saying it had written to the President making the request. “The President once again extends his condolences to the family of Mr Linee,” the Presidency said.Source: SAnews.gov.za.

Little Kickers in Boksburg are training boys and girls from as young as 18 months and up to seven years to give them a head-start in football and in life.Sylvia Nel, the coach and Boksburg franchise owner, says they play games with the smaller children - games that teach them colour recognition, weight return, teamwork and balance, among other skills they will need not only in sport, but also in life in general. “We teach them to be patient, and to listen to instructions,” she says, adding that it is all done in a fun and informal way.The older children are taught the basics of the sport, so that they are ready when they want to join football teams.The aim behind Little Kickers is not necessarily to enable children to gain football fame in later life, but rather to instil in them confidence, coordination, control and a sense of camaraderie.If you want your tot to learn while having a ball, phone Sylvia on 082 938 6262 or email her at [email protected].

By Heather DjungaThe same two qualities that make a human a champion separate a winning racing pigeon from the rest: the head and the heart. Pigeon racing enthusiast and member of the Edenvale Racing Pigeon Club Richard Wedderburn explained to tame TIMES that the sport of pigeon racing is about training champions and that winning pigeons are those with sense in their heads and home in their hearts.Despite recent media criticism of pigeon racing, Wedderburn insists the sport is completely ethical. “Each pigeon racer has given the pigeons in his care a home, where the birds are given food and shelter from the elements.” He said it was their love for their nests which compelled them hundreds of kilometres across the sky.Wedderburn is not ashamed to boast of his collection of pedigree pigeons which he explains are a family inheritance. He comes from a line of pigeon racing enthusiasts, having been bitten by the bug at just six years of age. “The adrenalin of seeing your pigeon return home is second to none. This isn’t just a sport. It is a 24/7 job. These aren’t your garden variety pigeons. Each day you must put in the necessary time and effort to hone your birds into superb athletes.”Wedderburn has a pigeon loft at his Lyndhurst home, where he keeps over 100 birds. “I care for them like my own

children,” he said. He said at this time of the year, from June until December, special attention is given to the inoculation of the birds, and to their health and medication. This is also the time when eggs are hatched and fledglings are reared. “I have around 60 babies in my care,” he said. He said race training begins around April. “The first flight towards home is around 20km and we build up a distance from there, until pigeons are covering distances of up to 800km. Each bird is given an identity tag and an electronic ring which allows for its exact finishing time to be recorded, down to the smallest decibel.”He explained the process: The birds are driven out in a special truck, with holding enclosures stacked side by side on the back of the vehicle. When the signal is given, a lever is pulled and all the birds are released from the enclosures at the same time. At some events, this means thousands upon thousands of pigeons taking to the sky, in a cloud of feathers and fury.He encourages residents to become involved in this addictive sport. “Belonging to a club like the Edenvale Racing Pigeon Club not only allows you to partake in regular race events, but it provides a warm environment where you can meet people and make good friends. Every one of my good friends is a ‘pigeon guy’. Other guys play golf, we race pigeons.”For more information, visit www.pigeonuniverse.co.za or www.trpf.co.za

DODGE: The kids played a game of pirates with the Little Kickers coaches, Felix Kaune and Colin Baker, having a blast as they tried to hit the coaches with the balls.
