As the year begins one is inspired to tap into the general aspiration of the entire human race - personal success and excellence.Standing at the back of a long bank queue, I had a thought that basically paralleled the situation I found myself in with where I and 7 billion+ humans want to be - at the front of life’s queue. After a short consideration, I came to the obvious conclusion that if I want 2014 to be the year for me, I’d need to get in line today. I’d need to get my plans and checklists in place today, because June will be too late and, as Aristotle alluded to in my opening quote, without a proper road-map I and we will always see excellence in others, but never be it.I am Nieto Hernandez and this is my head voice. Let’s chat, nothing has changed, [email protected] or tweet me @NietoVoice

SPCA Bedfordview manager, Laurence Kingston recently received an honorary award for more than 12 years of dedication to the community.Held at the Hellenic Hall in Primrose Germiston, Kingston received recognition for his outstanding contribution to the Chinese Association Community. The first award he received was for the contribution he made as former Chairman of the Chinese Hong Ning Aged Home situated in Belgravia, Johannesburg. Kingston was also awarded for his personal contribution and commitment to

the Chinese Community for more than ten years of service.Kingston stated, “I am very proud and humbled by these awards as I never ever considered or thought of myself as anything special, or required to be recognised and acknowledged as I always committed myself to do social work for the community - nothing less but more.” He added that he dedicates these awards to all community members, his family, relatives and friends and the loyal benefactors and supporters gathered along his journey at various organisations that he has had the greatest privilege to be involved and associated with.

Following a very successful Dis-Chem Half Marathon, the New Year started off with a blessing from the Bedfordview Athletics Club in partnership with Dis-Chem.Held at the Bedfordview Virgin Active, community members came in huge numbers to support this good cause. The event has grown to a fun family affair for the community of Bedfordview, whilst benefitting two nominated charities operating in surrounding areas.“Our organisation, Lambano Sanctuary located in Malvern East, was very fortunate to have been nominated as a beneficiary to this event, because that also provided us with the opportunity to inform more people about Lambano and our programmes,” said Lambano’s executive director Lyn Croote.A stunning R49 440 was raised in total for Lambano Sanctuary through this initiative and half of this amount was contributed by Dis-Chem matching the Bedfordview Athletics donations rand for rand. As it is the beginning of the year, the money donated will assist Lambano greatly with educational expenses for 28 school-going children. Founded in 2001, this organisation offers a holistic care and support residential facility to 30 HIV-positive children housed across the four homes, each house with a permanent residing housemother. Another programme offered by Lambano Sanctuary is the recently upgraded 18-bed paediatric Hospice/Medical Step Down Facility taking in children from birth until the age of 17 years old.“This wonderful opportunity would not have been possible without the support of the two main sponsors – Bedfordview Athletics and Dis-Chem Foundation. We as Lambano Sanctuary would like to send our sincere appreciation and thanks to the event organisers, all the various sponsors involved and the community of Bedfordview. We are humbled by the support we received and we hope more people can come visit our organisation to witness the precious work that we do,” said Portia Mlangeni from Lambano.

Learners who did not perform as well as they would have liked, have an opportunity to write supplementary examinations in February and March 2014, or they can rewrite a few subjects in October and November 2014. Detailed information on the procedure to follow when applying for supplementary exams appear at the back of every Grade 12 learner’s statement of results. The closing date for applications to write the supplementary examinations this year is 24 January.

Conditions for entry as per the regulations governing the supplementary examination:

1. If a candidate has not met the minimum promotion and certification requirements in the final external examination, but requires a maximum of two subjects to obtain the National Senior Certificate, he or she may register for a maximum of two subjects for the supplementary examination in the year following the final external examination.2. These two subjects must be subjects that the candidate sat for in the previous end of year examination.3. If a candidate is medically unfit and as a result was absent from one or more external examinations, he or she may register for the supplementary examination.

4. If there is a death in the immediate family of a candidate, or other special reasons for the candidate’s absence, he or she may register for the supplementary examination.5. A candidate who provides documentary evidence that he or she qualifies for admission to a higher education institution or for an occupation, but does not satisfy the higher education faculty requirements or the requirements for the specific occupation, as well as a candidate who is one requirement short in meeting the minimum admission requirements for Higher Certificate, Diploma and Bachelor’s degree programmes, may be allowed to register for a maximum of two subjects.6. In a case where an irregularity is being investigated, provisional enrolment for the supplementary examination may be granted to the candidate concerned, pending the outcome of the investigation.7. A candidate who was unable to write or complete one or more of the national Senior Certificate examination question papers for reasons other than illness or injury may apply to write the supplementary examination, provided that a written report is submitted by the principal of the school to the Head of the assessment body.

How to deal with unsatisfactory matric results

Every year thousands of matriculants with Bachelors and Diploma passes scramble to secure a space at universities and colleges. What many of these eager applicants do not realise, is that not all private academic institutions are as legitimate as they claim to be.Dr Felicity Coughlan, Director of the Independent Institute of Education (IIE), SA’s largest and most accredited private higher education institution, has cautioned prospective students to carefully scrutinise institutions before signing up to ensure that they are legitimate.“Thousands of newly matriculated young people are being turned away at universities due to space constraints. It is encouraging to see so many prospective students who are considering private higher and further education institutions as alternatives. It is therefore most regrettable that there are still some unscrupulous people exploiting students’ difficult situation, for fraudulent and selfish financial gain,” says Dr Coughlan.“Most private institutions operating throughout the country are registered and accredited and almost all offer a viable alternative for students seeking a post-school study opportunity, but it is a travesty that the actions of some taint the whole sector,” Coughlan says. Students must check the credentials of private institutions and ensure that it is registered and able to offer the qualification for which they are applying.Private institutions are required to adhere to the same rigorous quality assurance processes as state universities, meaning that if you register at the right private institution, you are able to gain a qualification of equal standing and quality. “There are a few key questions to ask to which there are some simple answers, and if an institution is able to respond appropriately, it is worth considering,” Dr Coughlan says.“Students eager to sign up in the current climate where spaces at tertiary institutions are scarce, may be tempted to forego this little bit of additional hassle. But failing to make the effort makes you enormously vulnerable to scamsters.” According to Dr Coughlan, if students take the time to ask key questions, they contribute to strengthening the private higher education sector by making it harder for scamsters to continue to operate.

Before signing up, students must ask the institution:· To show their certificate of registration with the Department of Higher Education. It should detail the campus, provider and the qualifications offered. No certificate – no go. · Whether it is accredited by the Higher Education Quality Committee of the Council on Higher Education. All higher education qualifications need to be accredited. If they are not accredited, they will not appear on the certificate referred to above. There is no other document detailing the accreditation; which is why checking if the qualification is on the certificate is an essential step.· For the SAQA NQF identity numbers. All the qualifications must be registered on the NQF by SAQA.

All the key information about the registration of an institution is available at the Register of Private Higher Education Institutions, which is kept by the Department of Higher Education and Training. The information is also readily available from reputable institutions. Alternatively, students can phone the Department of Education’s toll-free number (0800 265 266) to check whether private institutions are registered.

Two men were arrested for identity document theft and possession of fraudulent official documents in Germiston on 13 January, Ekurhuleni metro police said.Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said officers stopped a car in Delville and noticed the occupants fiddling with something under the seats when they approached.Six identity documents, 12 credit cards and several ID and passport photos were found under the carpet. Five of the identity

documents were without photos.Following a verification process by metro police at the Home Affairs department, five of the documents were found to belong to dead people. One did not exist on the Home Affairs database. The pair, foreign nationals aged 25 and 35 years of age, had been in South Africa for three years. They were charged with fraud, ID theft and possession of fraudulent official documents.

Two men nabbed for selling fake identity documents

ARRESTED: Suspects arrested for fraudulent documents.

Suspected airport syndicate robbing persons from the OR Tambo arrivals were caught by EMPD National Traffic Police.

According to Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, a 25-year-old son picking up his mother at OR Tambo Airport from Congo was accosted by three male occupants along the freeway. The three occupants flashed fake police appointment cards and instructed the driver to stop. On stopping his vehicle, the driver recognised one of the men to be the same person who robbed him of his cash and a cellphone in July 2011, using the same modus operandi. Fortunately, both the National Police and

EMPD Freeway Unit members witnessed the incident and confronted the suspects. The Alfa Romeo driver with one of his accomplices sped away and left one suspect stranded. The stranded suspect decided to throw himself into one of the vehicles, with three female occupants, caught in the traffic. The police were able to yank the suspect out of the vehicle and arrested him.The 49-year-old suspect was charged with attempted robbery at Bedfordview Police Station.In-depth investigations are underway to establish whether the suspect can be linked to several robberies of this nature that have taken place in the recent past.

South African hip-hop star Khuli Chana, who was shot last November by bedfordview police in a case of mistaken identity, wants compensation for what he perceives to be police negligence. Chana is suing the SAPS for over R2 million. According to eNCA, Chana’s lawyers have confirmed that Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa was served with an official notice of their intention to sue. Chana is suing for his medical expenses, future loss of earnings, damages, legal expenses and car repairs as a result of the shooting. The SAPS now has 30 days to respond. In addition, the police officers who were involved in the shooting have since been charged with attempted murder. According to Gauteng police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini, the case docket will be forwarded to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for an independent investigation into what had happened that night. Police shot at the award-winning musician when he allegedly failed to stop at a roadblock they had set up at a petrol station near the New Road off-ramp on the N1 in Midrand, on 28 October 2013. Chana was hit in the hand and back.

Bedfordview police officers had been tracking a group kidnappers who had kidnapped a businessman from the Bedfordview/Johannesburg area last year. The kidnappers demanded ransom money, which they were supposed to pick up at the petrol station. Chana was driving a similar car as the alleged kidnappers, and police shot at his car in what appears to have been a case of mistaken identity. The SAPS, however, are arguing that they were not being negligent, but that Chana refused to stop, and allegedly tried to run over the officers, after which the officers opened fire. They also claim to have more CCTV footage that could incriminate Chana by showing that he is in fact guilty of their alleged claims. According to eNCA, the IPID, who are investigating the officers, are not aware of this footage, and the SAPS has also not presented anyone with this footage.Newly surfaced CCTV footage from the garage where the shooting took place, shows Chana arriving at the garage and going into the shop. Shortly after, the alleged kidnapper also arrives. Chana gets into his car and calmly drives away. Later, the undercover cops at the garage start panicking after having been informed about the shootings. This footage is the only CCTV evidence available at this point.Further investigations are ongoing.

Recreating the King of Rock ‘n Roll, the one and only Elvis Presley, is either a hit or a miss. For Nathan Belt from the USA, however, this is second nature, and he is touring the world reliving the music of Elvis Presley. Belt is currently performing in South Africa at the Joburg Theatre; so if you are an Elvis fan and have dreamt of watching him live in concert, then Elvis - The Show is a must see. When the red velvet curtains lift and Belt appears on stage, it is easy to imagine that one has time-travelled

back to the 20th century, to the golden years of Elvis Presley. Belt’s sleek black hair gelled up, his rolling hips and bobbing legs when he does the twist, and the familiar deep voice when he says “Thank you very much” were spot-on. His costumes were also reminiscent of each era in Elvis’ music career - from the white socks with black pants and the grand blazers in his younger days, to the white glitter one-pieces reminiscent of his Las Vegas performances.Belt and his band covered a wide range of songs, which Belt sang live, from the rocking 50s right through to the 68 Comeback Special performance, and the more recent lighter Gospel songs. A few classics that were performed at the opening night included: Heartbreak Hotel, Jailhouse Rock, Are You Lonesome Tonight, Blue Suede Shoes, Can’t Help Falling in Love, The Wonder of You, and Dixieland. Belt’s energetic performance ensured that he captured each and every audience member’s undivided attention. He frequently interacted with the audience and gave out many scarves to excited female fans. What made the show especially memorable was the many references made to Elvis and his life throughout the show. Belt often explained the history behind a song, which made the lyrics very insightful and meaningful. Belt succeeded in presenting the audience with a sincere celebration and tribute to Elvis, instead of becoming just another imitation of Elvis.Elvis - The Show will be showing until 2 February in The Mandela at Joburg Theatre. Seat prices range from R100 to R250. Tickets are on sale at www.joburgtheatre.com, or by phoning the theatre’s ticket line on 0861 670 670. There are also specials available for groups and senior citizens.

Film has long become a part of Indian culture and with the curiosity growing in popular culture. The Indian International Film Festival, along with Ster-Kinekor and Utkarsh Projects, brings a line-up of a number of Indian films, spread across South Africa in Ster-Kinekor Cinemas. The opening film was Astu - Let it be, a Marathi film with a big heart and was screened at Ster-Kinekor The Zone@Rosebank. The film, directed by Sumitra Bhave and Sunil Sukhtankar, and stars actors such as Dr Mohan Agashe, Iravati Harshe, Milind Soman, Amruta Subash, Nachiket Purnapatre, Devika Daftardar and Ila Bhate. The film centres on an old retired doctor who has Alzheimer’s and how this affects his environment and how his environment affects him. It also shares a familiar family struggle when dealing with a loved one that needs 24 hour care, and how a family experiences this in various ways. It explores how differently each family member copes with a sick loved one who does not know who he is.It’s a sweet story, with great acting that leaves you with a smile on your face and thinking the world still has so much to give. All this is given to us through the rich Marathi culture, customs and traditions that lift your soul. The audience had the chance to meet one of the stars, Amruta Subash, who explained just how much the film means to her, “Film has a language that goes beyond languages.” South African actor Joe Mofela, who also attended the premiere, shared how much he loved the film and cinematography.

With school resuming last week, apart from the academic stress there is also the hectic sports schedule. What I would like to know is how did some scholars in sport keep fit for their different sporting codes during the holidays? Was it a matter of just relaxing and hoping to catch up when school resumes, or did some of you follow your normal training routines? With athletics being the first sport on the school sports calendar, are some of the best athletes ready to give it their best? Were parents still motivating during holidays? After all, they are the ones who will drive their children to practice while overseeing that they have all that is needed to perform at their best. Are teachers playing that role of ensuring that children, apart from their academics, especially those with the potential to become professionals athletes, have special programs put in place to ensure that school work is not affected by sports while their sport skills are duly developed? Some children are good at both while others have to balance it out. Both are important to some children, especially those who feel they need both in order to be a success in life.Look at some of the best athletes around the world and they would confirm during interviews they never stop training, they believe with that extra training it pushes them to be ahead of their competitors. Are some of you using the same method, did you put in that extra work to ensure that you ahead of schedule? If you did all of the above, you are one of those athletes that shouldn’t give up your dream in whatever sport you choose. That is the right mentality we need for those dedicated sports people who will set good examples. Sports will always be a good tool to ensure a healthy mind and body. My advice to those who a have passion for sport is never to let your guard down and keep working hard. Some of the most famous names in sport started from humble beginnings, talent alone is not good enough and hard work and dedication takes you that extra mile. To be the best you have to beat the best, and that only happens when you work harder than those you compete with.

The sun greeted all the Fast One Mountain Biking Series riders on 12 January at the Lido Hotel as they competed in the summer edition. This is in stark comparison to previous years, when it rained. With the sun came plenty of late entries, pushing the total entries over 900 compared to last year’s 600. All these unforeseen additional cyclers forced the logistical resources to take strain and the start was delayed by 30 minutes. When speaking to Mr PJ Joynt, a member of the Spectrum Sport

management team who hosts the race, he said they had changed the final section from last year’s route to avoid riders having to go through the muddy section twice, if it had rained again. This infamous section caused plenty riders to have mechanical, especially rear derailleur, issues in the mud bath. Additional single track sections were added, which were welcomed by the riders.Kallen Williams (21) made it a hat-trick as he won the 60km men’s event in a time of 2h10m23s, to accompany his wins in both events of last year’s summer and winter series. The winter edition will take place on 1 May this year. In second was Thinus Redelinghuis, third Jason Williams and missing the podium by one second was James Ross-March.The women’s 60km event was won by Sylvia Van Tromp (34), who showed her younger compatriots how it was done in a time of 2h27m23s. This time was good enough to put her 23rd overall and gave her a winning margin of almost 15 minutes over her rival Susan Elizabeth Gerber, who came in second with a time of 2h41m58s. Third went to Madri Blom a further eight minutes back.

The 35km route was won by Brandon Van Der Berg (15), second went to Cobus Van Der Berg and third to Jay-Cee Stoltz. The women’s 35km event was won by another Kristen Louw (15) in a time of 1h26 m34s, nine and a half minutes ahead of second placed Elanza Jugens and 21st overall for this distance. Third went to Lizali Blom.
