the nation is coming together to say “Enough is enough” when it comes to violence against women and children - in honour of the 16 days of activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign from 25 November to 10 december.Various stakeholders in Kathorus are observing this campaign to raise awareness of the consequences of violence on women, children and society. This year’s campaign theme is “Count Me In. Together moving a non-violent South Africa forward.” The campaign will also mark its 16th anniversary of raising awareness about gender-based violence, reflect on 20 years of democracy and 60 years of the Women’s Charter.Xolani Nkosi, Chief Operating Officer of Thokoza Progressive Youth, says the campaign is no longer about violence against women and children, but gender-based violence. “We believe that the issue of domestic violence no longer affects women alone, but also men. Awareness must be raised and people must be educated on how to manage household conflicts. We
need more information to address the underlying factors leading to violence. Some of the factors are poverty, alcohol and child neglect.” Bongani Ngomane, Chief Director, Department of Social Development, which is responsible for the men’s programme in Gauteng, said they would be launching an adopt-a-grandma provincial event in Kathorus at Katlehong Change Bible Church today. “We have realized that the elderly are being abused, raped and robbed of their belongings. We are introducing a programme of men to adopt the grannies to make sure that they are protected and safe,” said Ngomane.Thokoza Victim Empowerment Centre at the SAPS is partnering with cultural groups on 5 December in an evening prayer event at Thokoza Auditorium for murder victims in Thokoza and to honour the 16 Days of Activism.

This is quite an interesting fortnight, with the launch of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign. The campaign will be observed from Tuesday 25 November to 10 December to raise awareness of
the negative impact that violence has on women, children and society.Various organizations around Kathorus are hosting events in line with this campaign. We encourage community members to take part in such national activities so that they will
learn, and help to reduce the escalating rate of abuse directed at women and children. Women and children are the most vulnerable to all kinds of violence and we plead with them to speak out and expose all the ills that are inflicted against them by anyone. The challenge is that women are scared to be independent and fear the unknown when they think of exposing people who are abusing them. The consequences of violence, however, are extreme and cannot be compensated for by the material things that we may gain from the people who abuse us.
This fortnight we are also celebrating World AIDS Day on 1 December, when people will be educated about ways of preventing the spread of this pandemic. We are looking forward to covering all your events and making sure that we disseminate the information to the community. Enjoy reading your favourite newspaper. The security guards at Bophelong Private Hospital Clinix in Vosloorus recently arrested their colleague for a business robbery committed at the private hospital. According to Vosloorus Police Station spokesperson Captain Piet Rossouw, the security officers were conducting their business as usual when they noticed a doctor’s suite door wide open. “There was a suspect busy breaking in and collecting electric appliances inside,” said Rossouw. “Security guards called for backup and finally arrested a male suspect. He will appear in Vosloorus Court for business-breaking.”

Following the front-page story in our previous edition covering the blood bath incident at Thokoza’s Khuthuza Hostel, Thokoza police officers responded by conducting an operation to close down illegal shebeens there.The operation started at Phola Park and proceeded to the hostels. Constable Patrick Mashiane, Thokoza SAPS spokesperson, said many illegal shebeens were shut down, given tickets and a great deal of liquor was confiscated. “We will continue with the operations,” he said, “even if they continue operating we will come back to the same shebeens to shut them down again. We won’t get tired until they surrender. The
residents are complaining about the illegally operating shebeens, because this is where most of the crime activities are taking place,” said Mashiane. When asked to comment on the alleged prostitution (magoshas) taking place at the hostel he said, “It is alleged that there are magoshas operating in the hostels, but we need concrete evidence that will assist in shutting down illegal brothels at the hostels. There are several hijacking incidents reported and theft of motor vehicles occurring at the hostel. In most cases the victims often claim that their vehicles were stolen while they were being serviced by magoshas in the hostel,” concluded Mashiane.
Police officers are warning community members to mark their goods and write down the serial numbers of their electrical gadgets for easy identification in case they are stolen and recovered.Electrical gadgets which are often targeted by thieves are: plasma television sets, cellphones, laptops, home music systems and iPads. Because criminals use the festive season to conduct many of their activities, during this period there is a high rate of robberies, smash-and-grabs and house burglaries.Captain Rossouw, Communications Officer of Vosloorus Police Station said, “It is very
important to have serial numbers on your goods - or a mark - for easy identification of goods when recovered. We recover the stolen goods and if no one claims them after three months, they are confiscated by the state. If it happens that we recover goods that are suspected to be stolen and not claimed, the suspect won’t get a tough sentence. This is because we need to prove that the goods were stolen in a house robbery so that the suspect can be charged with possession of suspected stolen goods and house-breaking.”

Man found deadAn unknown man was found dead with a bullet wound on his upper body on Monday morning around 07:00 next to Eden Park Sport Grounds. The police have opened an inquest docket at Eden Park Police Station, because the victim has not been identified and the cause of the incident is unknown. The body of the deceased has been taken to Germiston Government mortuary and police are continuing with the investigation.
Two suspects were shot dead and six were arrested during a shoot-out last week in Thokoza.Police were on the hunt for a number of criminals after receiving information about a planned robbery at a shop and butchery in Thokoza. At around 18:00, they confronted the suspects, who, after realizing that they were being followed, started shooting at the police on Khumalo Road.The police retaliated, with the result that two suspects were fatally wounded and six arrested. A Ford Fiesta which was earlier reported hijacked in Jeppe was recovered, together with the two getaway cars, a Honda Ballade and a Toyota Quantum. Three pistols were also recovered at the scene.The suspects will soon appear at Palm Ridge Court facing charges of possession of a stolen motor vehicle, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and conspiracy to commit robbery. Police are also investigating an inquest docket.
The following arrests were made by Thokoza Police Station members from 12 to 13 November. Suspects were arrested during the daily stop-and-search operation conducted by crime prevention members for the following crimes, among others: Murder 3 Assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm 4 Shoplifting 1 Illegal crossing of railway 3 Contempt of court 1 On 17 and 18 November 24 suspects were arrested for the following crimes:Assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm 1Malicious damage to property 2Robbery, assault and attempted rape 1Murder 1The suspects will appear at Palm Ridge Court soon.
The Thokoza police arrested 24 suspects for various criminal offences from November 21 to 24 during a weekend of special operations. Separate ventures were conducted by administration members and crime prevention members. Palm Ridge Combined school held its annual public speaking contest recently on the school premises.The purpose of the event was to encourage students to develop skills in public speaking and to build their self-confidence. The competition was extraordinary, as all the students pulled out all the stops and all the speeches were both logically put together and dynamically presented.
There were two divisions: juniors and seniors, with the first three winners in all the categories being awarded with trophies. All the participants received certificates of participation. Parents of the students were also present to support their children at this prestigious event.The principal of the school, Mr H Singh was pleased with the performance of the learners and encouraged them to continue reading and showing respect to their elders.

Ethiopian based church fills hungry stomachsEthiopian nationals are unfortunately hated by those with myopic and xenophobic mindsets; but, despite all the negative connotations and abuse often directed at them, they continue to show their humanitarian hearts to their assailants. The Ethiopian Palm Ridge based church, Gospel for All International Church, handed out food parcels to the needy residents of Thokoza Extension 2 recently.
Pastor Brihanu Saroche of Gospel for All International Church said, “We are teaching people the Word of God that reminds us that we should refrain from doing wrong things. We may differ in language and geographical location, but we are all Africans and belong to the same continent. Fellow Africans should learn about love and unity from us. We are sharing what we have to alleviate poverty within the community.”

Page 18 18 - 27 November 2014tame TIMES Boitumelo “Manana” Mofokeng, 17, from James Street, Time housing section in Thokoza, went missing on 26 October 2014.According to her mother, Tshidi Mofokeng, her daughter was last seen on her way to the Words Centre Ministries Church in Thokoza in the morning. She said a missing person case had been opened at Thokoza Police Station. The 17-year-old was wearing a green skirt, white top, maroon leather jacket and brown half-boots at the time of her disappearance.
Mofokeng states that her daughter’s friends claim that they last saw her on 1 November in a certain house at Ebasuthwini in Thokoza. They went with the police to search for her daughter in that house but no one knew anything about her. She is appealing for the community to assist in finding her daughter.Anyone who has seen Boitumelo Mofokeng or knows anything about her whereabouts should report to the nearest police station or call Tshidi Mofokeng on 062 237 9055 /Warrant Officer Matabata at Thokoza Police Station on 011 906 8600.

Kasie FM recently bade farewell to three of their radio personalities who joined various other radio stations to advance their broadcasting careers. The three radio personalities are Vincent Maseko, Zama Mncwango and Lungile Maseko. “Vincent Maseko joined North West FM for a weekday slot - he was doing 21:00 until midnight Monday to Thursday on Kasie FM, and left at the end of October. Zama Mncwango joined Jozi FM to do their midmorning weekday slot - she was doing the midday weekday slot on Kasie FM and she also left at the end of October. Lungile Maseko, who was a Kasie FM news anchor,
joined YFM at the beginning of November,” explained the veteran presenter Jabulani “DJ X” Xhasa.Paul Radebe said, “Our radio station prides itself on producing reputable radio personalities who have joined other leading radio stations over the past decades. We produced SABC news anchor Aldrin Sampear, Mpho Phuthini, who is currently an actress and Jozi FM radio presenter, and Karabo Maila who is now working for Capricorn Radio Station in Limpopo. The Thokoza Sports Council (TSC) is inviting local sporting codes to their upcoming Special General Meeting to be held at Sam Ntuli Stadium on 3 December. Speaking to the media, Ursula Paledi said during the formation stages of the TSC they had experienced challenges because of people appointed to management positions without administration skills. She thanked the Ekurhuleni
Sports Department and Gauteng Sports Department which enrolled the TSC management team for courses that made their council’s administration effective.She said the purpose of the special general meeting was to talk to those in charge of the various sporting codes in Thokoza about how to affiliate themselves with the relevant structures and to recognize the sporting federation. “We will also inform them about the right channels they should utilise when dealing with local schools sporting teams. It is vital that we win back the trust of various local sporting codes, because
we had glitches in the past, but we soldier on,” said Paledi. She said they were proud to announce that the results are now showing that they have achieved enormous success within a short space of time. Paledi is excited that chess in Thokoza has reached the national stage and that rugby and cricket have reached the second spots in their respective regional leagues in Ekurhuleni. She said Landulwazi High School Girls Volleyballs u/19 and u/16 teams recently received silver and gold medals, which shows that they are moving in the right direction. “The competition, which was dubbed the International High School Volleyball Tournament, was held at the American International School in Johannesburg. On November 30 TSC will be hosting a South African Speed Skating Championship and Artistic Skating competition in Thokoza Sam Ntuli Stadium. Our local karate teams competed against international competitors in countries including China and Japan and came back with medals,” said Paledi.TSC offices are situated within Sam Ntuli Stadium in Thokoza.
