op die aand van 9 Junie 2012 is Mnr. owein lombard in ‘n padwoede voorval in Michelle laan doodgeskiet. Die saak is vanaf April vanjaar uitgestel en het op 15 September hervat, waar die beskuldigde Michael Sinequan, van KwaZulu-Natal, onskuldig gepleit het. Die eerste staatsgetuie, asook Owein se 15-jarige stiefseun, het in die getuienisbank verskyn.Owein en sy gesin was op pad huis toe van ‘n kuier by ‘n vriend se huis af. Hulle het by ‘n vulstasie

gestop waar die joggies onbehulpsaam was, en toe verder gery.Die eerste getuie, wat ’n ooggetuie was daardie aand, Richard Yiunam, het getuig dat hy saam met ’n vriend by die verkeerslig op die hoek van Michelle Laan en Johan van der Merwe Laan gestop het. Hy was besig om op sy foon ‘n boodskap te tik toe hy geluide hoor wat soos klappers klink. Toe hy opkyk, sien hy hoe ’n bakkie wegjaag en ’n man effens staan en wieg en toe agteroor val.Die vriend wat saam met hom in die motor was het intussen na Australië verhuis, en die staat se aansoek om hom via video-uitsending te laat getuig is afgekeer. Die seun het getuig oor die gebeure wat daardie aand voor sy oë afgespeel het. Hy het gesê dat hy skerp ligte agter die wit dubbelkajuitbakkie,

waarin hulle gery het, opgemerk het. Volgens die seun het die blou dubbelkajuitbakkie, waarin die beskuldigde was, langs hulle begin ry en dieselfde spoed as hulle gehou, asof hy konflik wou maak. By die afrit na Johan van der Merwe Laan het die blou bakke voor hulle ingesny en moes Owein skerp remme aanslaan. Owein het uitgeklim om die ander drywer te konfronteer, die seun het gesê dat Owein agter die blou bakkie om geloop het tot by die bestuurder se venster. Hy kon sien hoe Owein sy regterhand by

die venster insteek. Dit het gelyk of hy geslaan het, maar die seun kon nie sien of hy raak geslaan het nie. “Toe hy sy hand uithaal toe hoor ek twee geweerskote,” het die seun gesê. Die seun het gesien hoe die bakkie effens agteruit gery het en toe wegjaag. Dit is toe dat hy vir Owein in die pad sien lê het. Die beskuldigde se weergawe is dat hy en sy vrou die aand omtrent 22:00 uit wou gaan vir ete, toe hulle nie ‘n plek kry waar hulle wou eet nie het hulle teruggekeer huis toe. As gevolg van misdaad in die area, en omdat dit so laat in die aand was het hy sy 357 rewolwer by hom gehad. Toe hy in Michelle Laan ry het hy opgemerk dat die voertuig agter hom teen ‘n onveilige afstand van hom af ry. Hy het stadiger gery sodat die voertuig hom kon verbysteek, maar die voertuig het agter hom gebly.

SirkelbegraafplaasiS Alberton-erfeniSDeur Annel MeyerIn sy artikel wat in April 1968 in die Alberton Courier verskyn het, het Abie Moller geskryf: “Die begraafplasie in 9de Laan, net bokant Hendrik Potgieterstraat, was oorspronklik ’n vierkant met ‘n lae klipmuurtjie en het sedert ongeveer 1910 in ’n verwaarloosde toestand verkeer. So het ek dit as kind geken en so het hy gebly tot 1949.”Die begraafplaas was verbonde aan die plaashuis van Elandsfontein wat in die vroeë 1840’s op die oewer van die Natalspruit aangelê is. (Die ou plaaswerf is die oop spasie/park op die hoek van Tiende Laan en Hendrik Potgieterstraat.) Die huis het staande gebly totdat dit tydens die Anglo-Boereoorlog van 1899-1902 afgebrand is.Met die opmeet van die dorpserwe in 1903 is die begraafplaas nie in ’n erf ingepas nie, maar in die middel van Negende Laan gelaat. Aangrensend het die Alberton Estate Syndicate ses erwe geskenk om as ’n dorpsbegraafplaas te dien. Teen Maart 1909 het ongeveer agtien begrafnisse reeds plaasgevind, vermoedelik slegs op erf 777. In 1909 was die M.O.H. (Medical Officer of Health) van Transvaal se verslag verdoemend. Vanweë die

ligging en helling was besoedeling van putwater ’n gevaar. Verdere begrafnisse is verbied. Die inwoners het toestemming gekry om mense in Primrose (Germiston se munisipale begraafplaas) te begrawe terwyl die Alberton-gesondheidskomitee gepoog het om ’n eie begraafplaas vir die dorp te bekom, wat eers in 1938 (langs Georgestraat in Florentia) ’n werklikheid geword het. Vanaf 1941 is gepoog om die ou grafte na die munisipale begraafplaas te verskuif. In 1945 is kennisgewings in koerante geplaas en is die stadsraad se voorneme bekendgemaak om opgrawings en herbegrawings te doen. Na bewering het familielede geweier om die verskuiwing goed te keur.In November 1948 het die bouer Rosslee voorgestel dat die plaasbegraafplaas opgeknap en as ‘verkeersirkel’ uitgelê word. Planne is ingedien vir ’n sirkelvormige steenmuurtjie met ’n wawielmotieftraliewerk bo-op, terwyl ’n sementblad in ’n wielspeekmotief gelê is. Daar is besluit om die begraafplaas amptelik op 6 Desember 1949 aan die sorg van die Rapportryers toe te vertrou. In daardie maand het die Rapportryers deur Alberton opgetrek na die opening van die Voortrekkermonument buite Pretoria.

Op die (saamgestelde) foto is ’n deel van die sirkelvormige begraafplaas waarop gesien kan word in watter verwaarloosde toestand dit was. Kom kyk gerus môre op 24 September hoe dit nou, ná die skoonmaak en opknapping, lyk. Kom beleef saam met die Alberton-erfenisvereniging deel van die poging om ons geskiedkundige terreine te bewaar.

Die Alberton-erfenisvereniging nooi alle vorige en huidige inwoners van Alberton, asook alle ander belangstellendes, uit om op die vakansiedag Woensdag, 24 September (Erfenisdag) om 11:00 die geleentheid vir die onthulling van die name van die pioniers wat in die twee begraafplase op die hoek van Negende Laan en Hendrik Potgieterstraat begrawe is, by te woon. Die Erfenisvereniging het, met groot agting vir hierdie pioniers en hulle families wat Alberton gestig, hier geleef, gewerk en gesterf het, die sirkelvormige begraafplaas (die sogenaamde verkeersirkel) en die

aangrensende erf skoongemaak en opgeknap. Die twee terreine is die eerste plaaskerkhof van die plaas Elandsfontein waar Alberton ontstaan het asook die eerste dorpsbegraafplaas. Daar sal ’n insiggewende praatjie oor die agtergrond van albei die begraafplase wees, ’n kransleggingseremonie en die uitlees van die name van die mense wat daar begrawe is.

Op Maandag 15 September het die dames van die VLU Sonskyn-tak hul 77ste verjaarsdag gevier. Die dames het vrolik gelyk met elk ‘n blom in hul hare om ook die lente te verwelkom.Saam met die verjaarsdag het die dames ook die ‘Vreugde van Vrouwees’ gevier. Me. Alice Goosen het al die vreugdes, asook Eva se gebed, aan die dames voorgelees.Me. Jeanette Vorster vertel die dames meer oor die Engelse skrywer van die jaar, Herman Charles Bosman, en die wonderlike skryfstukke wat hy agter gelaat het. Sy vertel ook van die kunstenaar van die jaar, die alombekende Laurika Rauch, en die impak wat sy in die Afrikaanse musiekbedryf gehad het.

The DA Ward 37 Alberton Annual General MeetingThe Ward 37 Branch would like to invite all Democratic Alliance (DA) members and supporters to their Annual General Meeting which will be held on Saturday 11 October. The meeting will serve as an opportunity to update party members and those who would like to join, on the projects and policies the DA has been driving forward in council, province and at national level. Members will also be given an outline of the goals the DA is hoping to achieve. All members are also invited to give input regarding the direction the party needs to take at local level. The Ward 37 DA Chairperson says, “It is more important for us as an organization to invite all members to share their ideas which will help the party move forward.” During this meeting the DA will take an opportunity to communicate potential projects which the party is hoping to launch ahead of local elections in 2016. This meeting will take place on 11 October at 59 Lantana Street, Meyersdal Nature Estate, starting at 14:30. All members and those who would like to join the party are invited to attend.

Waste removal under investigationAlberton residents have been perplexed over the past few weeks about poor service from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, specifically with regard to waste removal services. One incident reported to tame TIMES took place on 4 September in Meyersdal when EMM waste removal services filled their vehicle with garden and building waste, but left the bins of other residents standing and only emptied them on another day. tame TIMES sent the vehicle registration number to the EMM. We have also received numerous complaints regarding the lack of refuse vehicles in Alberton.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality responded by saying that the matter is under investigation. “Our waste removal services were behind schedule during the past few weeks, so services in the Meyersdal area were rendered on 4 September. However, the type of waste loaded here is questionable - hence the investigation,” they said.The EMM advised that there are currently six vehicles available to render services out of a possible 10, so services are currently up to date and on schedule. “We have had challenges the past weeks with vehicle availability, but the situation has improved,” they concluded.

Die beskuldigde het gevoel dit is beter om eerder verby die voertuig te gaan omdat die voertuig roekeloos gery het. Albei voertuie wou die Johan van der Merwe afrit neem en die beskuldigde moes vinniger ry om betyds by die afrit te wees. Volgens die beskuldigde se weergawe het die ander voertuig ook vinniger begin ry en die twee voertuie het amper by die afrit gebots. In ‘n poging om sy bakkie weer aan die gang te kry het sy fokus na sy sleutel verskuif. Hy was nie bewus daarvan dat die bestuurder van die ander voertuig uitgeklim het nie. Hy het eweskielik ‘n hou teen sy regter tempel

gevoel en besef dat iemand hom aangeval het. Houe het hom aanhoudend deur sy oop ruit getref en die persoon het ook die deur van buite, en toe van binne, probeer oopmaak. Die beskuldigde se vrou het glo gegil en dit het die beskuldigde aangespoor om sy bakkie weer aan die gang te kry. Hy het weg van sy venster af geleun en gevoel dat sy rewolwer in sy linker sy is, hy het die rewolwer uitgetrek en twee skote afgevuur. Dit was toe stil en die beskuldigde was nie seker of die ander persoon dalk ook ‘n vuurwapen wou gaan haal het nie. Hy het dit reggekry om sy voertuig aan die gang te kry en het weggery om te verseker dat hy en sy vrou veilig is.Daar is volgens die verdediging alkohol in Owein se bloed gevind. Die saak hervat weer op 23 Februarie 2015 waar die res van

die staatsgetuies asook die verdediging se getuies sal getuig, dit sluit in die beskuldigde en sy vrou.

Op ‘n dag het *Fanie besef die spore wat hy loop is spore wat tot niks lei nie.Hy het alles verloor en het agter ‘n kerk wakker geword met ‘n papsak wyn onder sy kop as kussing. *Fanie was deur sy drinkersdae nooit sonder sy Bybel nie. Hy het tot die besef gekom hy hou vas aan sy “eie beloofde land”. Op 24 Maart 2003 het die Here *Fanie aangeraak en hy is 11 jaar en 6 maande sober. *Fanie is ‘n lid van CAD groep in Alberton. Hy het tydens die tweejaarlikse konferensie sy trofee vir 10 jaar plus van soberheid, met trots ontvang.

“Hy juig wanneer ons groei in wysheid, ons onderwerp aan Sy dissipline en gehoorsaam is aan Sy Gees en sagte werking in ons gees.” Dit het *Koos besef op 14 April 2011 en God se woorde het lewend geword in sy lewe. *Koos leef nie meer as ‘n “slaaf” nie maar is vry, vrygekoop deur Sy bloed. *Koos het na rehabilitasie by die CAD Alberton aangesluit en is reeds vir 3 jaar en 5 maande sober. Hy is ook as Voorsitter van die Alberton tak verkies en is tydens die konferensie ingehuldig. Hy is ‘n sterk leier en die lede kyk op na hom.

People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA) is a “feminist, women’s rights organisation that provides both services, and engages in advocacy in order to ensure the realisation of women’s rights and thereby improve women’s quality of life.”The organisation’s work is rooted in the belief that change can only be said to be effective when women’s lives are directly improved through interventions. has assigned to protect them. On Saturday 13 September at around 09:00 three suspects tried to steal a white VW Golf from Randhart Shopping Centre in Alberton. The owner of the car noticed that the vehicle’s bonnet and driver’s door were open and that one suspect was in the driver’s seat, while another one was tampering with the engine. She began screaming and alerted members of the public – including a Fox Security Tactical Unit (Fox) member who was in a nearby hardware store at the time.Two of the suspects fled from the crime scene in a vehicle and the third suspect fled on foot. The Fox member and members of the public ran after the suspect, who sprinted into a cul-de-sac in Sarah Crescent and jumped over a fence at a building site.Fox Armed Reaction Officers and the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Crime Task Team surrounded the area where the suspect was last spotted. The Fox member searched the building site in Sarah Crescent and noticed

that the back fence of a property in Fuhri Street Randhart was bent, investigated further and found the suspect hiding in a back room of the property in Fuhri Street. The suspect was arrested and detained at Alberton SAPS for attempted theft of a motor vehicle and malicious damage to property.

A woman, believed to be in her thirties, was critically injured after she was knocked over by a motor vehicle on the N3 North bound, just before the Grey Avenue off-ramp in Alberton on the morning of Thursday 18 September.Netcare 911 paramedics arrived on the scene and found the critically injured woman

lying on the roadway, and the Netcare1 helicopter was activated to airlift the woman to hospital.Traffic was delayed following the accident and the landing of Netcare1.Details surrounding the accident and the events preceding it are still unknown and will remain the subject of a police investigation.

Various Alberton residents have informed tame TIMES that their water meter readings did not show the free water units for the month of August.The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality wishes to confirm that on accounts where the reading period split

tariffs - between the previous and the new financial years - a printing error was identified. The charge calculations were perused and a detailed calculation will confirm that the free units were indeed correctly calculated.

SAPS Football league Brackendowns SAPS nab suspected highjackers

Sixteen stations from the East Rand are playing in the SAPS Football league. On Wednesday 17 September, Brackendowns SAPS played against Vosloorus SAPS and won the match 3 - 1. It is the first time that Brackendowns SAPS is part of the league. The league is a fun activity and provides a break from the stressful everyday life of a police officer. It helps the officers to relax and promotes team-building.

On 18 September around 17:05 Brackendowns police officers were patrolling when they noticed a suspicious-looking silver Mercedes Benz with four passengers. When the police vehicle turned around to follow the suspicious vehicle, the vehicle started driving faster. They stopped the vehicle in Flamink Road and fled on foot. One of the suspects dropped a weapon, which was later found to be an unlicensed firearm. The other three suspects ran through a factory towards Mayberry Park. One of the three suspects was caught by police officers in Beryllium Street and arrested. Back-up was called and a further suspect was arrested in Mayberry Park. The silver Mercedes Benz was positively identified as a vehicle that was hijacked in Mondeor, and had false number plates. The two suspects were arrested for possession of a hijacked vehicle,

possession of car-breaking implements and possession of an unlicensed firearm. They were detained at Brackendowns SAPS and later transported to Alberton SAPS.The SAPS believe that the suspects will be linked to further crimes in the area.

Rand Water hosted the 19th Race for Victory cycling competition on 21 September in support of Frances Vorwerg School, which provides education to learners with cerebral palsy and learning disabilities. The Race for Victory is an annual traditional road cycle event that starts and finishes at Rand Water’s Zwartkoppies Pumping Station in the South of Johannesburg. It attracts professional riders and novices, as well as those cyclists who compete for fun. There are three cycling distances on offer during the Race for Victory competition. Elite and professional riders find the 150km distance most suitable as it takes them through the uphills and rapid descents of the scenic Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve. The 110 km distance takes riders through the Meyerton/Henley-on-Klip area, while the 54km distance offers the ideal distance for recreational and less fit cyclists. The 150km event for Elite riders, which includes 40km in the scenic but tough Suikerbosrand Nature reserve as well as a famous 500m stretch of sand just 4km from the finish line, is considered one of the toughest courses in South Africa. This provides an impressive test for cyclists early in the season. An impressive sprint for the finish line saw Meron Teshome come out on top just in front of Shaun-Nick Bester and Calvin Beneke, who came 2nd and 3rd respectively in the elite event. Teshome, an Eritrean national, has being going from strength to strength. Coming fresh off a 2nd place race at the Cape

Argus, he had plenty to prove. With good backing from his team, Teshome crossed the line looking completely natural and comfortable with his sprinting capabilities. Tesfom Okubamariam broke away with one other rider in the gruelling hills of the Suikerbosrand nature reserve with some impressive climbs. This saw him winning both of the King of the Mountains awards. “The reserve area is an extremely hard ride,” said Okubamariam. “It is, however, a place where some hard work really pays off.”Okubamariam, who had been riding with the lead group up until the reserve, held on to his lead nearly to the end. The pursuing pack relentlessly chased him down and caught him just 1km from the finish line. At that stage the sprinting power of Teshome and the other winners was too much and they rocketed past Okubamariam for victory.“It was a good race,” said Teshome. “The climbs were difficult but I felt I paced myself well and was able to go straight through till the end.”Rand Water has been a supporter of the race during the past decade – thus providing much needed financial support to Frances Vorwerg School. “We subscribe to Frances Vorwerg School’s vision, which encourages us all to give everyone a second chance,” said Advocate Matshido Hashatse, Chairperson of Rand Water’s Board. “Every child deserves an education and therefore we are proud of the role that a school such as Frances Vorwerg plays in uplifting our communities and our society as a whole.”
