eskom crossing the lineMembers of the public were invited to attend a combined Ward Council meeting on 7 August to discuss the proposed placement of overhead power-lines by Eskom through the Alberton CbD. This meeting was held in preparation for the meeting confirmed with Council members that will take place on 14 August at the Alberton Civic Centre. The committees and members from Ward 37 (the directly affected area), Ward 38 and Ward 94 compiled a letter which was presented to Council on Monday, as an invitation to the Public Meeting confirmed for 14 August. The full letter can be viewed on our website). In the letter it states the objections raised by the affected parties, such as: the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study was not up to standard and did not clearly indicate that Alberton would be affected, and no public participation took place before decisions were made.The letter also states that Eskom ignored the views and opinions of those residents in the neighborhood affected by the power-lines. The health and wellbeing of those living in the vicinity of the power-lines had also not been taken into account. The community believes that their constitutional rights have been violated and that they must be provided with answers by both the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality and Eskom on the way forward with this project. The EMM Officials are not attending meetings on request and it appears that the project lacks transparency, as no answers can be

provided as to who approved the project. We hope that the public will take an interest in this very serious matter and make the most of this platform created for them to raise their views and give inputs for submission to Eskom.

Life teaches us so many lessons, but it is up to us whether we learn from these lessons or just let them fly by. Unfortunately, too many of us just let them go and in the end we learn a harder lesson than what was originally intended – just a thought.It is our responsibility, as a newspaper, to inform the community of incidents that happen in Alberton; and, despite the good relationship we have with the community, we also have to share the bad news that dwells within Alberton. Unfortunately this issue of tame TIMES has quite a bit of bad news, but we also have a fair amount of good news.Always stay positive and try to make a difference where possible.

On 9 August Thaba Eco Hotel, in partner-ship with Pam Golding Properties and tame TIMES, celebrated National Women’s Day with women from all over Johannesburg.Proceeds were raised in aid of the EPIC Foundation, which helps rape and abuse victims. Ladies attending the event were re-quested to wear hats and to bring handbags filled with items suitable for rape and abuse victims. The handbags were then donated to the charity on the day, and Alta McMaster from the EPIC Foundation expressed their gratitude to all the ladies for their support.Nico Panagio, from Survivor and 7de Laan fame was the MC for the day, and had all the ladies flocking to his side to have their pic-ture snapped with him. His good looks, wit and charm certainly added to the enjoyment of the day.The Glam Guru Hannon Bothma entertained the ladies with step-by-step make-over shows and gave them advice on how to look their absolute best in just a few minutes. He chose two ladies from the audience and did his Glam magic on them to show just how easily his tips worked.Kate Emmerson gave a vibrant, interac-tive and inspirational talk about how you should declutter your life physically, mentally and spiritually.

The day was filled with great prize giveaways and there was a dress-up photo booth where ladies could take selfies and upload them to the organiser’s Facebook page. Of course there was a delicious three-course meal. A big thank you goes to Taryn Porteous(Thaba Eco Hotel) and Linda Nunes(Pam Golding) and their teams for making it a spectacular day for all the beautiful women in attendance.A happy Women’s Month to all our women readers.

Arson case postponedThe 57-year-old gardener who set Jenny van Tonder’s car alight while she was seated inside it, briefly appeared at the Palm Ridge Court on Wednesday 6 August. He stands accused of malicious damage to property and attempted murder and will appear in court again on 18 August, allowing him to apply for legal aid. Jenny sustained serious burns to her face,

chest and arms. Her son, Peter van Tonder, told tame TIMES his mother is recovering well at Chris-Hani Baragwanath Hospital. “We appeal to everyone for support on 18 August when the bail application will take place,” Peter said. “We hope that bail will be denied because he (the suspect) has threatened other’s lives as well.”Follow Jenny’s recovery on Facebook: Healing Jenny

Eleven Eikenhof protesters arrested

The intersection of Vereeniging Road (R82), which leads to the R550 and the R554 in Eikenhof, saw violent protests by angry Jacksons Informal Settlement residents last Wednesday and Thursday. In reaction to the demolition of some shacks on Wednesday, residents threw stones, burned tyres, destroyed robots and covered the road with rocks. Eleven people have since been arrested for acts of public violence.Mondeor SAPS spokeswoman Cst Elizabeth Mnguni, explained that the Department of Human Settlements had moved some residents to RDP houses in Lehae last December, leaving some stands vacant. It was agreed that the residents could stay on the land on condition that no new shacks or people moved on to the vacant stands. However, when the Department came to do an inspection, it was found that new shacks had been erected.Two weeks’ notice was given for the shacks to be removed, but this instruction was not adhered to, which led to the shacks being demolished.Motorists bore the brunt of the protester’s anger, with numerous vehicles being damaged by bricks and massive rocks. A 26-year-old motorist told tame TIMES, “I was coming from Eye of Africa and when I got to the intersection to get on to the service road,

bricks were thrown at my vehicle. I ducked while trying to drive to get away. It was evident they were aiming for me.” Her vehicle has extensive damage: her windscreen, the driver’s window and the back windows of her car were smashed and there are numerous dents on the vehicle. She has since gone for trauma counselling, and will be going for more.Mondeor SAPS, SAPS Public Order Policing (POP) Unit and JMPD came to disperse and control the irate mob. Rubber bullets were needed to control the crowd on both days, and teargas was used on the second day, when eleven people, both men and women, were arrested.Thabile Nkosi, the ward councillor for the area, came to the scene on Wednesday to try to calm the situation down by facilitating negotiations. She was not successful, however, as residents began protesting again as early as 5:00 on Thursday morning.A source informed tame TIMES that protesters pulled residents out of their shacks at 4:00 in the morning, telling them to join in the protest and threatened to burn their shacks down if they did not.While tame TIMES was on the scene on Thursday, protesters threw rocks at the journalists, hitting two; but fortunately no injuries were sustained.Visit tame TIMES Facebook page to view all the pictures.

According to family and friends, a man from Steeledale died at the Brackendowns police station after trying to capture cellphone images of a friend who was

allegedly assaulted at the station. An eyewitness said that Richard Chirwa was choked by a police officer who had arrested him for drinking and driving. According to the eyewitness, who was also one of four passengers in the car, they were travelling when they were stopped by police in Brackenhurst on 26 July. The police noticed two bottles of beer in the car and arrested Chirwa and another passenger on the scene. The 29-year-old female eyewitness said she and her brother were then asked to join the two suspects in the van.She told the media that she and her brother were taken to different entrances to the station, where they joined Mr Chirwa again a few minutes later. She went on to say that the other suspect was lying on the floor in front of other police officers, with his face bleeding.She said when Chirwa wanted to capture pictures of the injured man, the officers asked him to stop taking the pictures and confiscated his cellphone. The police then told Chirwa that they were going to draw his blood to check for alcohol, but he refused to allow them to do so unless they returned his cellphone first. It is alleged that one of the officers pepper-sprayed Chirwa and then throttled him until he collapsed.The following Thursday evening, Chirwa’s family said they wanted answers. They were suspicious because police were telling them a different story from the eyewitness. According to the family, the death certificate states that his cause of death is still being investigated. Richard’s wife, Maureen Chirwa, told tame

TIMES that the police said her husband collapsed when a standby nurse tried to draw his blood. The family had asked for a meeting with the police to explain the incident, but a meeting could not be confirmed. They are now busy making arrangements to send Richard’s body back to Malawi, where he was born.

Provincial Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini referred tame TIMES to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid). Ipid spokesman, Moses Dlamini, was not available for comment.

Care Centre receives 67 hampersMandela Day is all about helping to change lives for the better. Employees at Henkel South Africa have been doing exactly that. mega church next to south Crestthe residents of south Crest have been objecting to the development of the mega church complex next to the N12 freeway for over two years. Two site inspections, appeal meetings and an environmental impact assessment (EIA) later, the residents were relieved to receive the news from Bruna Haipel that the outcome of the EIA identified three key points on which permission for the development to go ahead has been refused, pending an appeal by the developers. Five species of rare and/or endangered plant species were identified growing on the ridge. We, as residents, also know of the small mammals,birds and insects that contribute to the wonderful biodiversity of the ridge that

separates our suburb from the busy freeway. The detrimental effect of daily heavy traffic down a residential street was also taken into account, since the church complex includes a Bible college, creche and student accommodation. Also instrumental in the refusal were the many other objections the residents brought to the table.We are more than relieved that our special ridge is safe from development, at least for the time being. It is proof that public participation and a united community are not just a waste of time and effort. May the residents of the greater Alberton area take this lesson to heart in fighting the giant power pylons planned to pass right in front of the Civic Centre.

Diagnostic Radiological Services supported St Mary’s Children’s Home on Friday 1 August. This diagnostic X-ray practice, which has eight branches situated in and around Johannesburg, identified the need within the community to help St Mary’s Children’s Home in Rossettenville, south of Johannesburg. The various branches pulled together and collected all sorts of items included on the Children’s Home’s wish-list, ranging from clothes and toiletries to much needed groceries.

St Mary’s Children’s Home has been open to children since 1902 and has six houses that can accommodate a maximum of 12 children at a time with two house-mothers per house.This charity relies solely on the generosity of the community to continue providing a caring environment for these children. DRS felt very humbled to be shown around the houses and felt privileged to be able to donate towards helping these children even in just a small way. DRS would like to continue supporting St Mary’s Children’s Home in the future.

Madeleine van Niekerk, an Out of Africa Winter Queen finalist from Alberton, hosted a Mad Hatters High Tea party on 2 August for CHOC. Funds were raised through function ticket sales, donations and raffle ticket sales.The Out of Africa Winter Queen Beauty pageant is a national competition which has fundraising for childhood cancer awareness as its main mission. The mission of the Out of Africa pageant is to help women all over the continent “to be the change they want to see in the world.”The pageant gives finalists different tasks, one of which is to raise funds, of which a percentage will go to CHOC. Madeleine is also part of the Awareness for Childhood Cancer Campaign.Guest speakers included Nicky Strydom from Alberton whose daughter Sarah was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma just before her eighth birthday and has been in remission for 10 years. She wrote a book called Spunky that is about her cancer experience and how, against all odds, she became a provincial badminton player. The book started as a scrapbook when she was in hospital having chemotherapy and ended in her Matric year. Unplanned pregnancy is one of the challenges facing South Africa. According to WHO 50% of unintended pregnancies are among women who were not using birth control at the time they became pregnant.

Strategies for prevention of the above include the following:- Educating and empowering women about birth control- Helping men and women at risk of unintended pregnancies choose appropriate contraception - Correct use and consistency of the chosen method - Promoting the use of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC).

LARC are methods that require administration

less than once per month/cycle. They do not require ongoing effort on the part of the user for long, effective use and rapid return to fertility after discontinuation.

The following methods fall within the above category: Intrauterine devices, Mirena® and Copper devices Implanon®,Depo Provera,Nur-isterate and combined vaginal ringsHormone-based birth control often comes with side effects that can range from slightly annoying to bad enough to make you discontinue the method. The lack of hormones in some of the methods alone is a major benefit to many women who simply prefer hormone-free birth control option.

Nausea, headaches and dizziness will resolve spontaneously in three months. If it does not, take pills with food or switch to another method.

Breakthrough bleeding can be annoying because it is often unpredictable and prolonged. It is common with progestin only methods (Depo Provera, Nur-isterate, Implanon® and mini pills). They cause thinning of the lining of the uterus

and it sometimes sloughs off. Ibuprofen or a little bit of oestrogen hormone can improve this condition..Reduced Libido: switch to an androgen based (testosterone-like) method.

Mood swingsStudies have shown that this is due to a lack of pyridoxine in the body. Pyridoxine tablets may relieve these symptoms. Women with persistence of these side effects despite treatment must switch to a non-hormonal method.

Weight gain and breast tenderness: because of fluid retention, usually improves after a few months. Drosperinone-containing methods can prevent this side effect.

Vaginal thrush is more common with methods containing high doses of oestrogen.

About Laser LipoHow does non-invasive Laser

Lipo technology work?Non-invasive Laser Lipo technology works with a patented cold laser conductor that is passed over the skin. Cold laser technology was originally designed to speed up healing, but doctors soon noticed that it could also liquefy fat cells painlessly. Pampering little divas for Women’s Month

When Mrs UN SA 2014/15 finalist Desiree Oliphant arrived at Bennie Boekwurm Nursery School, she had two things in mind: firstly, to engage the little ones (3-6 year-olds) about the importance of Safety First and, secondly, to teach them about the importance of the Police.SAPS Brackendowns Police W/O Khumalo did a powerful “blue-light-siren-demonstration.” Though the toddlers were a little scared at first, they soon warmed to it and enjoyed it in the end.The children were also given an interactive pep-talk on bullying by AKESO’s qualified psychologists, and spoiled with toys sponsored by Toys For Africa.“Another surprise element for me was that Mr SA finalist Johann Herbst Mr SA also agreed to join me in making this day special for the kids in our community,” Desiree said. Johan and Desiree, both finalists from Alberton, will do many more collaborations together, in aid of the community.The highlight of the day was of course the pamper sessions (hand massages) for the little divas for Women’s Month, courtesy of the beauticians from Infinity Nails & Beauty Parlour in Alberton.

Helping children of struggling mothersAll working mothers need crèches or day-care centres for their children with decent facilities. Mothers, however, who do piece jobs and send their children to township crèches or day-care centres, cannot always insist on the upholding of accepted norms and standards. Many cannot even afford to pay the monthly fees, with the result that there are women running township day-care centres who are forced to look after children in very difficult circumstances. These women often work without pay, looking after the children simply to keep them off the streets. The 4th Annual South African Savanna Comic’s Choice Awards® (CCA) was a hit. Held on 2 August at The Teatro at Montecasino, audiences were treated to an impressive variety

Riders excel at Inter-Provincial Mounted Games of SA During the July school holidays Samantha Kruger and Donnelly MacKenzie represented the Gauteng A and B teams respectively. The Gauteng B team obtained second place in their division, while the Gauteng A team was crowned as the new SA champions.

In addition, both Donnelly and her sister Courtney MacKenzie (a past learner from Alberton High School in 2013) were selected to represent South Africa at the 2014 5 Nations Championships in New Zealand in December.Alberton High School salutes their equestrian riders.
