Borchers sentenced Daniels to six months imprisonment with five years suspended, which means that if she is found guilty of assaulting a person within the next five years she will automatically go to prison for six months. While delivering Daniels’ sentence, Borchers said she took into account that this is Daniels’ first time offense, and at the age of 16 she would have been easily influenced by older boys - especially if they invited her to smoke dagga and to drink. Her reason for the assault charge was due to Daniels putting brake fluid into the two victims’ drinks. Borchers said, “I don’t know if you are using drugs now, but I hope you stay away from drugs and finish school.” Adding that Daniels has a chance of setting her life straight. Leisha Du Toit, Theologo’s cousin sat bewildered in court after Daniels’ sentence was heard. “Two years of fighting and then to see her (Daniels) just walk away. I can’t believe that. She goes home to her family all happy and I go home and get reminded of how this has broken my family.” Sylvia Theologo, Kirsty’s mother was relatively accepting of the judgement. “The judge knows what she is doing, she looked at all the evidence and this is what she came to. There is nothing I can do.” She did add that she is still broken up by the events. Both Harwood and Wagner cried into their mothers’ chest after the judgement. tame TIMES spoke to Harvey Isha and his defence lawyer, Chris Pillay, after the hearing. “Justice was served today. The two accused planned a pre-meditated murder and then tried to implicate Harvey,” Pillay said, satisfied with the ruling. Judge Borchers said she was impressed by Isha’s demeanour and found him to be truthful. Isha stood in elated shock with his girlfriend when tame TIMES asked him if he would like to comment. “I would just like to say thank you to Mr Pillay. It is unreal. Trick-or-Treating, getting dressed up and decorating with spider webs, ghosts and Jack-o-Lanterns have all been Halloween traditions most South Africans have only experienced while watching American movies. However, the controversial holiday has gained much popularity in recent years, with many dress-up parties, townhouse complexes organising opportunities for kids to go door-to-door and get some sweets, or families simply driving to friends’ homes to have their kids Trick-or-Treat.This year, Aspen Nature Estate decided to celebrate the spooky event with a Halloween Carnival, organised by the Aspen Estate real estate agents. There were lots of fun carnival games and rides, with music, food and entertainers for all to enjoy. Candlelit walkways and carved pumpkins, along with ghosts, spider webs and even a living troll certainly set the spooky mood. Scores of people, young and old were dressed up in fun or frightening costumes, with many walking the streets of the estate, looking for candy troves to delight in.

Mulbarton-based accounting and auditing firm, Russell James & Company Incorporated recently had all their staff take part in the Santa Shoebox Project as a team building event. Each member had to prepare their age appropriate gift for their chosen child. A total of 55 gifts were handed over last week to Santa Shoebox Project, which in turn will go to an orphanage.

Zak the Zoo buddy celebrated his birthday with a kids party at Rietvlei Zoo Farm on 3 November. This meant children got the chance to join the Zak Kids Club and were entertained by magicians, clowns, face painters, fun games, activities and, best of all, lots of prizes were handed out. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by the children and they must be looking forward to his next birthday celebration.

October was breast cancer awareness month and as tame TIMES we dedicated all of October’s editions to all things pink. In November (or Movember) we shift our focus to the brothers, as we raise awareness on another common yet hidden cancer.Prostate cancer is rated the second highest killing cancer that affects men. Men’s health statistics estimated, in 2010, a diagnosis rate of 217 730 and 32 050 deaths resulting from those diagnoses. As if that was not shocking enough, 1 in 24 South African men will at some point in their lives receive a prostate cancer diagnosis. Reading up about the cancer, I found that there are no known causes of prostate cancer. This immediately led my thoughts to the secretive nature of men. Many women have out of frustration expressed their deep desire for real communication with their male partners; that, ladies, is not what I want to talk about. Men to men talk, that’s something I have had at the back of my mind for some time now.A few months ago a very close friend of mine experienced a tragedy and as a result he immediately went into a worrying isolation mode. This confused me and sometimes even frustrated me because I didn’t know how to reach my friend. I’m yet to find a way, but since then I have been more sensitive to the way I myself vocalise my thoughts and feelings during my prickly situations. So far I’ve noticed it’s easier for me to rant about politics, sports and other outside aligned topics. As soon as things begin to point inward, Nieto retracts and becomes inexpressive and that is the very behaviour that made me worry when I saw it in my friend. I must mention, by the way, I’m writing this not because I have any answers, all I have is more questions. What is the purpose of male friendships? What is the value of male to male friendships? Why does it seem we are friends during the summers and strangers in the winters of our lives? Are there any benefits we derive from our secretive state of existence?Perhaps some of our male readers may have some answers, or at least ideas. Please share if you do guys. The closest I’ve gotten to making sense of men’s failure to man-out, is the way we are socialised; the men don’t cry generation, who reserve their feelings for interactions with cars, gadgets and extreme sports. My biggest question and perhaps criticism this week is, are there any benefits to this macho stance? Can men engage with their emotional centres without being considered soft? Let’s chat, share your views via e-mail: [email protected] or tweet us @tametimes.

City Power has been cleared of all allegations of fraud and corruption relating to a tender issued last year for advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), by an Independent Review Panel chaired by Advocate Vuyani Ngalwana (SC).The tender was issued to Edison Power Group (EPG) in September last year. On 18 January 2013, the Mail & Guardian alleged there had been manipulation in the tender process, to fix the tender for the benefit of this particular bidder. In response, on 28 January 2013, the Board of City Power appointed an Independent Review Panel consisting of three members of the Johannesburg Bar; Advocate Ngalwana (SC), Advocate Sandile Khumalo, and Advocate Farzanah Karachi. The panel was given full and complete access to all documents relating to the tender and full and complete access to all staff members involved in the tender process, including people who are no longer in the employ of City Power. The Independent Review Panel concluded that, “We could find no evidence of improper interference in the bid evaluation process” and “We can find no evidence of irregularity in the award of contract 1907GS.” “We find no reason to believe that the contract was awarded to EPG on any other basis than that it had obtained the highest overall score,” the panel said.City Power’s MD, Mr Sicelo Xulu has been cleared of all allegations that he interfered with the procurement process to the benefit of a friend of the president. “In the result, and on the evidence before the panel, we can find no basis for the imputations that the article sought to make on the Managing Director.”The panel further found “no material

discrepancies” between the final scoring and the information provided in the bid documents. They also found no impropriety in the process of notifying the successful bidder of the award of the contract.

No evidence was found of impropriety in the determination of the contract value. However, the panel found that the process followed was not ideal. They are of the view that the approval of a budget should precede the award of the contract, not follow it. The panel recommends that City Power should budget properly for key projects and secure budget approvals before going out on tender, even where these budget approvals would extend over a number of financial years. The panel, during the cause of their work, found areas of concern relating to a number of failures to fully comply with the SCM Policy. The panel concluded that these are not failures of such grave import as to warrant a setting aside of the award and that the methodology that has been followed in the evaluation of the tender cannot be faulted sufficiently to mar the entire process. “Such lapses have not resulted in financial loss to City Power, while the reputational attack on the entity is, as we have found, unjustified on the evidence before us,” the panel said. The company has taken note of the lapses identified by the panel. While these lapses were found to be not sufficiently serious as to warrant setting aside the tender, the company is implementing stricter controls and training to improve the management of the process and administration of compliance to ensure zero tolerance of any form of corruption.

Ashanti Mbanga, Miss Earth South Africa 2013, leaves for Manila, Philippines on Friday to represent South Africa at the international Miss Earth competition, which takes place on 7 December. Media got a glimpse of her spectacular designer dresses as well as her vision for access to clean water for all, which she will present at the competition. This year’s international Miss Earth theme follows the official United Nations theme of Water Co-operation. The 24-year-old Transport Economics Major will represent SA amongst delegates from around the world during November and December. She arrives in Manila in November and will spend three weeks in South East Asia, travelling throughout the Philippines visiting schools and communities, promoting environmental campaigns and programmes and meeting with dignitaries and environmental bodies across the region. Their key focus is Water Co-operation and what each Ambassador can do to continue promoting the responsible use of this scarce natural resource once they return home. Mbanga’s true light shone when she gave a very heartfelt speech at the media farewell. She explained that her father passed away in April while she was completing her degree, a very trying time. She went on to say that when she went to Gold Reef City in a taxi for the first Miss Earth auditions, it was raining and she was soaking. She thought this couldn’t be, but look at where she is now. “When one door closes another door opens,” Mbanga said. Her humble speech just shows another great quality she has as a role model. The towering beauty will showcase a one-of-a-kind national costume, a custom-designed piece created by Sonwabile Ndamase from Vukani Range Creations. Ndamase is best known for creating the brightly coloured, patterned “Madiba shirts” made famous by Nelson Mandela. Delegates at the international Miss Earth are also required to present an “Eco-Dress,” which was to be made from responsibly sourced, sustainable and/or recycled materials. Mbanga will showcase a design created by Redhill School learner, Suzanne Bell. The piece, which came about as part of a project in conjunction with the school’s Generation Earth council, is made from recycled Archie Comics and scrap material using a technique called “napkin podge”. Mbanga will sport

items from Crystal Forum and Swarovski and all her pre-departure beauty needs have seen to by Camelot International, Villa d’Est and Bijan Boutique Hairdressing. She will travel with a range of beauty products from Esse as well as a full set luggage, kindly donated by Samsonite SA. “Being crowned as Miss Earth South Africa has given me great purpose and has been the most significant event in my life that I will treasure forever. I will always be blessed to continue working with the Miss Earth organisation and I will continue to serve my community and country. There is no greater service,” Ashanti said. Mbanga goes forward with great commitment and knowledge of the environmental need. She understands her responsibility and the power that she has to make a difference, to educate and to be a voice for the green movement. Mbanga is passionate about devising efficient and effective ways of moving people and freight while reducing the effect of the transport and logistics industries on the environment. She hopes to one-day affect genuine positive change from the position of Transport Minister.

What’s in a Word?Big words in the Bible

We as Christian bikers are faced with a lot of turmoil and heartaches with families and friends. This Christmas we have decided to help Amcare in Alberton by enriching children and women’s lives by giving them Christmas gifts. These children have gone through so much pain and heartache. We really just want to put a smile on their faces. Even if it is just something sweet or a little toy. Unfortunately we were unable to collect as much as we wished during the year and now call on the community to assist us.We are not asking for money, however if you wish to make a cash donation you are more than welcome to. We are asking for your old toys, or clothes that do not fit your children anymore, or even a packet of sweets or a tin of food. We would also like to give the ladies in the Victim Empowerment Scheme presents that will make them feel treasured, and realise that they are not alone and there are people out there who really care. Please contact Richard on 082 365 9831 or Elisha on 079 753 9978 or Charlie on 071 031 0606 if you would like to help.

Plea for Southerners to help

Derkien Riders write:

SinIf you don’t know what the word “sin” means, you won’t be able to make any headway with the Bible, because the Bible is God’s explanation of His answer to sin. Major themes like God’s love, the good news of salvation (the Gospel) and punishment will have no meaning to you. Three problems inhibit us from understanding what sin means: (1) it is an unpleasant subject; (2) to understand sin we need a proper awareness of God; (3) today we use the word differently to how the Bible uses it. Sin in the Bible means any offence committed against God, which is not determined by

society’s perceived moral standard but by God’s standard. God’s standard is perfection as He defines it, which is utter perfection in action, word, thought, and everything else. If you fall short of this, you have sinned according to God. Undoubtedly the biggest problem with sin is that everyone has done it. Why does this matter? Because if there is one thing God hates, it is sin. That is why the Gospel is good news, because if we trust in Jesus, God sees us as perfect and no longer in sin.

Despite the bleak weather on the day of the Jozi South Half Marathon it was a definite success, raising an incredible R22 640 for CANSA.Entry fees for the 4km Fun Run and R10 from each 21km and 10 km were all donated to CANSA for research, education and support for all people affected by cancer. The official handover of the cheque took place at Gold Reef City on 5 October.A delighted Charles Eybers from Brotherhood Athletics club said, “It is truly a worthy cause and great pleasure to be associated with it.”“We have learnt a lot over the past two years.

I am pleased to be able to help make a great contribution to the community,” Charles added.General Manager for Gold Reef City, Mike Page believes that the donations to CANSA will make a real difference and when the event continues over the years to come it will keep growing from strength to strength. In addition to the donations from the race, the Ultimate Day Spa also handed over their October donations. The Ultimate Day Spa donated R5 to the Jozi South Marathon from each treatment they did over the month of October.

Wat ‘n warm naweek wat verby is! Gelukkig was dit nie omdat ek in warm water was by Gysie nie - dalk ‘n bietjie andersom. Ek was nog so heel in my skik, toe sê sy ek sal gelukkig die verskil vinnig kan sien, omdat ek genoeg vet in my gesig het.

Alan de Haas, Regional Manager at Mpact, was this month’s guest speaker at the Green Business Platform. Hosted at Thaba Ya Batswana on Tuesday 5 November, this month’s meeting focused on the business of recycling with Haas taking attendees through the various operations at Mpact. The drive towards more environmentally sustainable solutions should, as Alan

expressed during his address, be focussed on the medium to long term and not only short term. What this then means from a business point of view, is that value should be created at every point of the supply chain. This idea is well-illustrated in the way in which Mpact has chosen to decentralise their business and thus create gaps that are meant to be filled by community entrepreneurs who run and manage buy-back centres, and the hawkers who collect recyclables that Mpact uses in their recycling efforts.

“For recycling to become more effective, we need to increase participation at the level of the home,” said Alan. “Recycling instead of mindlessly disposing of recyclable materials saves energy, extends the lifespan of landfills, creates healthier environments and is good for the economy,” Alan added.Currently South Africa has achieved a 58% recycling rate and Mpact aims to raise that number to 62% over the next 5 years.Asked about the hawkers that many of us have experienced on the roads with their massive

trollies containing plastic and cardboard, Alan said they are working on designing trollies that would be more suitable for the use. Another question that came from the floor was how much the hawkers make. Alan confirmed that they make on average in the region of R150 per day. The next Green Business Platform will be on the morning of December 3. For updates on the conversations held at these meetings, visit www.klipsa.org.za or follow @klip_sa or @andrew_barker.

“A blank new page, a brand new day.”The closing words of the poem, Tomorrow, written by Andrea Jury from Roedean School, the overall winner of 2013’s SACEE Junior Writing Competition, is a call for the reader to look forward to each new day and make the best of it. This is advice that learners from the participating schools in the Midvaal Branch of the South African Council of English Education (SACEE) did not need, as they achieved excellence above all expectation in this year’s poetry writing competition. On 2 November the official awards ceremony was held to honour the winners amongst the grade 3 to grade 4 learners that participated. The ceremony was hosted by Mondeor Primary School, whose choir started proceedings off with an energetic performance. Before moving on to the prize-giving ceremony, one of the competition’s co-founders, Dr Richard Hayward, shared with attendees the origins of the competition in the 1970s and how it’s grown over the years.Main adjudicator of the competition, Mr Digby Ricci spent time discussing the extent and quality of the work he had to choose from, as well as imparting wisdom and advice to the budding writers to improve on future works.Among the honoured guests was Ella Bella, Educational Officer for Miss Earth SA and UN Youth Ambassador, and current Miss Earth SA, Ashanti Mbanga. Both these lovely ladies were students at Mondeor Primary and helped hand out prizes and did readings of some of the winning poems to the audience.“Part of what Miss Earth SA motivates, is for individuals to support and work in their own communities,” Ella Bella said.

“It’s important for each person to grow and impact their communities,” Ashanti Mbanga echoed.Learners received book prizes sponsored by Reader’s Warehouse, to encourage them to read more, as well as journals from Miss Earth SA, to encourage them to develop their writing talents further and fill “A blank new page, a brand new day”.

Mondeor Primary learner, Naleeka Ayrga (10) won the 2013 ‘Spelling Bee’ title and walked away with a scholarship to study at Monash South Africa together with prize money of R1000. Spelling Bees from 19 primary schools representing District 14 (southern suburbs of Johannesburg, Soweto, Lenasia and Eldorado Park) came together recently to participate in the finale of the Nedbank Capital Spell It Championships. Naleeka took the top honours after beating 23 other grade 5 learners. “Sponsored by Nedbank Capital and in partnership with the

Gauteng Department of Education, the programme is essentially aimed at improving English literacy at the primary school level,” Roger Dickinson, CEO of Chesskids Academy and Spell It Literacy Programme said, “especially in areas of spelling, vocabulary and language usage so that learners proceed to high school appropriately equipped to handle their studies. The idea is also to build excitement and momentum around learning and academic achievement.”Six thousand words from an international word list

were given to the competing learners in preparation for the Championships.

“This in itself is a demonstration of the learners’ capability to compete at a global level and furthermore showcases their competence to spell above their grade level,” Dickinson said.Other southern schools that had finalists were: Naturena Primary, Dalmondeor Primary, Hitekani Primary, Protea South Primary, Zodiac Primary, St Ives Primary, Donaldson Primary, Mondeor Primary, Milnerton Primary, Diodi Primary, Eldocrest Primary, Heerengracht Primary and Tholimfundo Primary.

The 2013 Emperors Palace Charity Mile took place at Turffontein Race Course on 2 November, and what a beautiful day it was. With perfect weather, celebrities signing autographs and, most importantly, 16 charities walking away as winners. However, at the end of the day the true warrior was the hero - Royal Zulu Warrior and jockey Karl Zechner won R100 000 for Maphanzela Primary Aftercare Centre. Celebrity Gerry Eldson was elated and screamed with joy once she saw Royal Zulu Warrior crossing the finish line. Her African dress, which she only decided to wear that day, certainly brought luck on the day.The Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile brings together top racehorses and celebrities in aid of 16 charities who each received a

share of the R550 000 pool. The celebrities included our own South resident Brian Mitchell and his beautiful wife Juanita, as well as Mondeor actress Fiona Nay, James Dalton, Mathew and Sonia Booth and Jason Goliath, to name but a few.

Daryl Impey signed with oRICA-GreenEdge cycling again last week. The contract is a three year deal. The first South African to wear the yellow jersey has flourished during his two year tenure with the Australian outfit. In 2012, Impey earned his first World Tour win, made his Grand Tour debut at the Giro d’Italia and solidified his position as one of

the world’s best lead-out riders. His strength in the sprint train inspired his selection to the team’s 2012 Tour de France squad.Impey’s breakthrough season was followed by a second hugely successful year that included stage victories at Bayern-Rundfahrt and Vuelta ai Pais Vasco and a starring role in the team’s stunning performance during the first week of the Tour. Impey led out Simon Gerrans for the win on stage 3 and played a crucial role in the team’s time trial win in Nice that put Gerrans in yellow. What most South Africans recall is when Impey benefitted from a touching display of team spirit when Gerrans slipped back to pass along the yellow jersey to Impey. While the ex-Glenvista resident has made huge stride over the last two years, Sport Director Matt White is convinced that the best is yet to come from their protégé.
