Acceptance. Joy. Peace. The three most helpful attributes to have firmly set in your soul. Bitterness. Depression. Unacceptance. The three most destructive things to keep in your life. Why am I telling you this? There are many things that happen in life that can severely harm a soul - death, betrayal, lies and violence being some. I don’t know how you feel, but I can’t help but get upset, to the brink of tears, when I see on the news that 100 people die because one person has an issue with another and decided to bomb a church/mall/park that is full of innocent people. People just trying to enjoy the life they have been given, whether it be a poor, rich or mediocre one. People get treated horrifically and children are raped and murdered. Women are abused and are still mistreated despite all the progress we have made since women’s rights became such a huge thing. How does a sensitive person or a strong person even deal with all this horrific, inhumane news that shows just how scummy humans can be, just how harsh life can get? Some days I have great difficulty facing the news. It makes me so sick to know that the last thing that the baby in Diepsloot experienced was mistreatment and absolute pain and torture being eaten by rats.

And then there’s that poor child that was raped and found in a bush with a condom thrown at his face. How could he have felt? Did he scream or was he already dead? These children are so vulnerable to adult stupidity and that breaks my heart. I opted to just find peace in the fact that that child is now free of this cruel world; joy in the fact that he or she is in heaven - or whatever your belief be - and acceptance that there isn’t really anything I or anyone else could have done considering the circumstances. I don’t know if you feel the same or if I’m just rambling, but I do know that thinking about this every second of every day really isn’t healthy. Just be alert, protect your children, print tips and hand them out to the people that you care about. Go the extra mile because life is so, so short and life is so, so precious. Don’t waste a single moment, never let your guard down when in an unfamiliar place and always keep emergency numbers close by. The world knows that all this bad news can cause bitterness, depression and unacceptance. We just have to, somehow, someway, find acceptance, some joy and some peace amongst all the disaster. One day the scum will have to pay for what they have done with their time on earth, till then we can only work on magnifying the good and opposing the evil in our world.

The management and patroller team of CPF Sector 1 are putting plans in place to ensure that criminals stay out of their area during the festive season. Ms Geraldine Mochubela from the MEC’s office of the CPF Cluster attended the monthly CPF Sector 1 meeting on 13 November. At this meeting it was agreed that 30 CPF foot patrollers will be trained and registered to assist in the crime fighting initiatives of Sector 1. These 30 foot patrollers will be utilised during daytime and the current 18 patrollers, who are residents of Sector 1, will continue to do patrolling during the night and day where possible.

The CPF members and patrollers utilise their own vehicles and funds and sacrifice a lot of their personal time to assist in the crime fighting activities of the CPF. The chairperson, Denise Curry and deputy chairperson, Simon Kops took three days out of their busy schedule to do fundraising to assist in the CPF Sector 1 crime fighting activities. Five CPF Boards have been erected in the Sector 1 area, which was sponsored by businesses in the sector. The costs of these boards, which includes one year advertising for the sponsored business, vary between R4 500 and R10 000. Approximately 50 CPF Patroller Boards have been put up at community member’s houses

at a cost of R200 per CPF Board. All the funds raised by the CPF Management and Patroller Team will be used to establish a repeater network for the CPF patroller communication radios and to purchase more radios for the CPF patrollers. “We have already done a lot of work and we still have a lot of work to do. Our rewards are the diminishing of crime in our Sector 1,” says Denise Curry. “I have a highly dedicated team and we work closely together towards a goal which will benefit all residents and businesses in our community. Our motto for Sector 1 is – ‘This Community has a Zero Tolerance for Crime’. Since the inception of the CPF Patroller Group, crime in our area has gone down from alarmingly high levels to hardly any crime, which is a clear indication that we are doing something right.” The CPF Sector 1 is looking for management as well as patroller representation in Atlasville, Bardene, Bartlett and Witkoppie Ridge. Please contact Daey Engelbrecht, the CPF Sector 1 head patroller, on 082 88 99 260 or e-mail [email protected] to join and/or donate to this crime fighting initiative.

WARNINGPolice have warned the community

of a new method that criminals could be using to target various

households.Burglars are allegedly using coded chalk symbols to let other criminals

know whether a property is worth targeting or not. The marks are made

by would-be thieves to indicate if the house is vulnerable. These mark reveal who is living in the house and

whether there is anything worth stealing.

Sien julle volgende week

Wat ‘n warm naweek wat verby is! Gelukkig was dit nie omdat ek in warm water was by Gysie nie - dalk ‘n bietjie andersom. Ek was nog so heel in my skik, toe sê sy ek sal gelukkig die verskil vinnig kan sien, omdat ek genoeg vet in my gesig het.

The City of Ekurhuleni has intensified its campaign to get rid of illegal connections across the municipality. To date over 17 000 electricity connections have been removed since the drive started over two months ago.

On 15 November the illegal connection team comprising of the Red Ant Security Services, CPI (Combined Private Investigators), Metro Police’s Cable Theft Unit, Public Order Policing Unit and SAPS, led by the municipality’s Energy Department, visited Zama Zama and Peter Mokaba informal settlements in Extension 28, Vosloorus to remove illegally connected cables. The campaign has been to Mpilisweni in Thokoza, Ramaphosa in Reiger Park, KwaThema Extension 3 and 6 and the KwaThema Hostel, Langaville Extension 6 and 8, Daggafontein in Springs, and Mkantshwa informal settlement near Ergo in Brakpan. Other parts of Ekurhuleni will be visited in the next two months.

Illegal connection of electricity is a major problem which has seen the municipality losing a whopping R36 million per annum. This translates to losses of about R2.8 million to R4.9 million that the Metro suffers per month. Ideally this is the money which could otherwise be channelled towards service delivery projects. In a bid to address this huge loss, the City embarked on a month-long education campaign in September to educate the communities, where over 30 000 illegal connections were identified, about the adverse effects of illegal connections. The campaign has entered its second leg, where the actual removal of illegal connections is being carried out.“In spite of the dangers associated with illegally connecting electricity, and the fact that this practice destroys the economy and reduces work opportunities as well as destroys power infrastructure, the practice is till rife especially at informal settlements,” explains Sam Modiba, municipal spokesperson.

Modiba points out that already this year alone four children were killed in Dukathole near Germiston as a result of illegal connections, while in another incident last month a 42-year-old KwaThema man was electrocuted while trying to steal electricity.“We are appealing to community members to help us fight illegal connections by reporting such incidents to our emergency call centre at 0860 543 000.”Meanwhile, the City of Ekurhuleni is currently rolling out solar energy lighting to identified households at Ekurhuleni’s informal settlements for which no short or medium plans are in place for relocation or upgrading. The 10W solar lighting unit consists of a solar panel, a battery control box and four LED lights. The solar panel is positioned on top of the roof, but cannot be stolen because it is built from inside the house. The lifespan of the battery is three to five years. The LED lights have the capacity to keep the light shining for up to 100 000 hours.

Scooters Pizza Brakpan is set to benefit from the experienced hands of new owners, Sheldon and Lisa Williams. As the owners of seven other successful Scooters Pizza stores, the husband and wife team is set to take the Brakpan business to even hotter heights. The couple believes that if something works, and works well, that the model should be replicated for further success.“We believe that the Scooters Pizza formula is a recipe for success that should be learnt from, adhered to and enjoyed, as the model is designed to benefit both the franchisee and the customer. Even though we’re multiple store owners and seasoned pizza entrepreneurs, we realise that each business market is unique so we look forward to getting to know the Brakpan community and their specific needs,” says Sheldon.

Sheldon and Lisa have ambitious plans for their new store and have set their goals to include a 20% increase in sales to align the Brakpan store’s standards of service, quality and production with their other Scooters Pizza businesses. Taste Holdings Food Division CEO, Jay Currie, states that he is overjoyed that the Williams family is expanding their ownership once again.“This family is an asset to the Scooters Pizza brand as they truly are franchising gurus who have established a positive reputation for themselves and the business as a whole. Lisa and Sheldon have clearly demonstrated the success a dedicated entrepreneur can expect from partnering with a turnkey franchisor such as Scooters Pizza.” Sheldon adds that the staff at Scooters Pizza Brakpan have welcomed them with open arms and are responding positively to the change in management.“We want our employees to understand the business and their role in contributing towards its success. By rewarding them with incentives, we are showing them that we are grateful for their input and proud to have them as a part of our dynamic team. In order to ensure that we are offering our community the best service and product we possibly can, we will do our utmost to keep our employees happy as they directly contribute to our customers’ happiness, and ultimately, the growth of our business.”Scooters Pizza offers hungry consumers a varied menu consisting of a number of traditional and speciality pizzas, as well as pizones, subs, wraps, side dishes and desserts, so head on down to the Brakpan store to get a slice of the good life. For more information on Scooters Pizza, visit their website www.scooterspizza.co.za.

The judges had an extremely difficult task of singling out only two of the best dressed. The morning started with fruit cocktails, meeting all the invited and learning

more about them. Guests even had a chancto enjoy the Christmas shopping experience from 22 wonderful

exhibitors. Straight after breakfast the hilarious Nataniel showered the crowd with his witty charm, immaculate voice and very

fitting sarcasm. He was brilliant and we were treated to over 70 minutes of his many talents. After receiving an encore and

a standing ovation, Nataniel departed. The fun day continued with many wonderful

prizes and give-aways that were distributed, birthdays

were celebrated and we enjoyed a huge hot buffet brunch washed down with sparkling

wine and juice. More joyous meeting

of new and old friends followed until the function

finished at 1pm.

T h a n k s goes out to

all who attended.

Nathaniel celebrates the East Rand By Jacqui Jurisch

Thousands of revving motorbikes met in the parking lot of the Irene Village shopping mall on Sunday morning, with collections of toys tied to the tanks. Excited people walked among the mechanical masterpieces, the bell rang and they began heading for the R21 highway. The route to the Benoni Sports Club was ushered by the Metro and Traffic control police blocking the roads for the motorcycle riders to pass. Two rows of motorbikes were driving in the far left-hand lane and onlookers couldn’t help but to wave and take

photos. Safety motorbikes drove in front as the thousands of bikes drove slowly along the highway.Once at the Benoni Sports Club, the motorbikes parked on the sports field and handed in the toys and gifts to the helpers inside the main tent. The entrance fee to the event was a toy or toiletries for unprivileged children. There were stalls to buy t-shirts from as well as food and drinks, a live band entertained the crowd and there was even a “test your bike’s horsepower” stand. It was a heartwarming experience, and each toy or gift that each person hands in grants an unprivileged child a Christmas.

Meet Jess Qvist, the new Front Page Father national essay competition

winner. Her topic for the challenge was “What my father means to me”.

She won lots of prizes including R1000, a 2 night

stay for 2 in the Airport Protea Hotel, lots of stationery from Waltons and Bic, a game for the school and a giant tin of milo. Jess attends St Dunstan’s College in

Benoni, is in Grade 10 and her father’s name is Philip.Jess’ essay: What my Father means to meHow long did I stare

at this piece of paper, trying to come up with the

right words - the perfect words? Millions of thoughts rushed to my mind and still my paper remained blank. What does my Father

mean to me? A simple question yet

extremely thought-provoking.One of the memories that popped into my

head was one which

has not visited me in many years. I was seven and my Mom had gone away on business. My Dad was left alone with me and he had to take up the ‘mother’s job.’ He was doing well until he got to my hair. He had no idea how to tie my hair up into a ponytail. I remember him trying his hardest to thread the elastic from the bottom, upwards. I also remember both of us getting irritated and my Dad eventually sending me to school with three quarters of my hair hanging out.My Dad has always been someone who has tried his hardest to make me happy. Sometimes I think he feels that he is wasting his time, as (more often than not) my teenage moodiness pushes him away. I am extremely grateful, however, that he has not given up on me.My Dad is the best Dad ever. His unusual habits and quirky comments normally infuriate me but I love him an endless amount because of it. Although we fight often and have many disagreements, he is and always will be an encouraging and inspirational Dad.I was looking for the perfect words but I did not find them. Instead I’ve realised that my Dad does not need perfect words. He is already imperfectly perfect.

Stay safe this holiday

When holidays come around it’s good to think about the safety of you and your family.

So to ensure you get to your destinations safely

here are a few tips:Prepare your car - have it serviced and check that you’re prepared for

emergencies with a blanket, torch and first aid kit.

Prepare yourself - be rested before a long drive, plan the trip so you share the driving and take regular breaks to avoid fatigue. If you plan to have a drink - plan not to drive.

If you have children in the car ensure they are in the appropriate child restraint.

If you’re travelling with pets make sure they are restrained - for everybody’s safety. If towing a trailer or caravan inspect:Tyre condition and tyre inflation - including spare.Towbar & towing equipment is secure. All electrical connections are secure and lights work correctly.Trailer brakes work correctly. Before you head off on a drive it is a good idea to check out what is happening on the roads you plan to travel on.It’s a good idea to always keep a minium three seconds gap

between you and the car in front. When it’s raining and/or foggy double the distance to six seconds no matter what speed you’re doing.Keep left unless overtaking - When driving on a dual lane road always keep to the left lane. Use the right hand lane for overtaking, turning right or when roadworks are being carried out and there is no other choice.Indicate early - Always indicate when changing lanes, 30 metres wherever practical, to advise other motorists of what you are doing.Expect the unexpected - Drive with your line of sight parallel to the road not looking down onto it. By doing this you see further into the distance so you can be better prepared if there is a problem ahead. It may even mean you can avoid a crash.Driving at night - Driving at night requires more skill & concentration than at daytime due to your restricted vision. Oncoming headlights can obscure your vision and pedestrians can be near impossible to see. Leave a bigger gap between you and the car in front to allow for your reduced vision and reaction time.

Road rage - Stay relaxed and try not to let other people’s driving skills or decisions worry you. If another driver makes a mistake don’t get angry just concentrate on your own driving skills, behaviour and safety. If another driver is courteous towards you, then acknowledge the good deed with a wave or turning on your hazards for a few seconds.Driver fatigue - When setting off on a long trip don’t leave too early in the morning because your body clock believes you should still be asleep. Have a 15 minute rest every 2 hours. On a long trip, make sure you know your route so that you can plan to stop at garages where you can stop and grab a cup of coffee.

This month saw Clare Vale join the rest of the SupaDrift series drifters for their final event of the 2013 season as part of the Durban Motorshow. The weather played a role in proceedings, making each day a new challenge with changing track conditions. Clare’s RAM Mustang was well set up and the tricky surface posed few problems for the powerful V8 car.Fortunately, the track dried out before Saturday afternoon’s qualifying session and Clare put down her best performance in a SupaDrift event to date. She qualified 12th out of 37 top class entries, surprising many contenders. Sunday’s Gold Cup tandem rounds saw Clare drawn up against Royce

Munnery, a Durban local, in his V8 Nissan. It was a tough battle between the muscle cars and Royce’s consistency handed him the win. Clare Vale said, “This event was a fitting finale to the 2013 SupaDrift season, with all the drifters putting on a top show. There was total commitment and quite a few cars went home looking the worse for wear. The RAM Team has raised their game with every event this year and I was very happy to qualify 12th in a top drawer field of almost 40 cars.”“I still need to work on following in my tandem rounds and this let me down, as Royce was in top form, but it’s good to know we still have plenty of room for improvement. I’m grateful for all the help

and assistance we’ve had throughout the year from so many people, and especially to RAM for their fantastic support. I think the RAM Mustang will be a real contender for the new season.” For more information on Clare Vale visit www.clarevale.com or follow her at @clarevale.

The Sisters with Blisters walk saw a great number of men and women lined up at the starting

line of the eight kilometer walk. Dogs were allowed to take part in the walk, but shorter four kilometer walk. There were a total of nine thousand entries this year and each person joined the walk to prevent the abuse of women and children. Every year Jacaranda FM and First for Women insurance host this

spectacular walk to create awareness. There were walkers that dressed up for the occasion and others had their four legged companion walking the course with them. “I brought my dog with for the walk to let him get some exercise as well,” a walker said. The course was inside and around the Blue Hills Estate in Kylami. There were water tents decorated in pink to refresh the walkers and plastic pools for the dogs

to cool off in. Overall the day was full of excitement and a great experience to those who participated. The walk is an annual event and it is a great deal of fun for the entire family. Sign up to walk next year and bring your four legged pal with.

Malherbe, Rigg and Ranwell IncOldest law firm in Boksburg, Malherbe Rigg & Ranwell Inc ended the year in style with a ladies breakfast at Lemongrass Restaurant in Benoni. The firm is celebrating yet another successful year as top law firm in Ekurhuleni and winners of the PMR Diamond Arrow Award for the 8th consecutive year.

MALHERBE, RIGG & RANWELL INC. (MRR) has done it again and walked away with the 2013 PMR Diamond Arrow Award for Excellence. This award is given to the top legal firm in Ekurhuleni and MRR are extremely proud to have received this honour for the eighth consecutive year.MRR is Ekurhuleni’s oldest firm and has a history that stretches back to 1894. Having been around for nearly 120 years has allowed MRR to use its vast experience to deliver the best possible service to its clients. But experience is not all that MRR uses to excel in the legal field, they are also a firm that can adapt to current challenges, allowing them to evolve their service offering to compete with changing times, changing governments and the ever changing laws within South Africa. It is that ability to adapt to the demands of a market that is flooded with choices, that has allowed MRR stand head and shoulders above the competition for at least the last 8 years and probably for many more years before that. So great has MRR’s growth been over the last few years, that they have been able to open a new office in the Midvaal area to cater to a broader market they now serve.

Malherbe Rigg & Ranwell is a leader in the fields of litigation, conveyancing, commercial law, labour law and the administration of deceased’s estates, and prides itself in offering a full service to all of their clients.Beyond the law, MRR also spends a lot of time giving back to the community it services and you will regularly be able to read the local news about the projects that Jeff Matthee and his team are involved in. If the past is anything to go by, the future looks bright for Ekurhuleni’s top firm.

South Africa secured their first victory for 16 when they beat France with a score of 19-10 in Paris this weekend.Silencing the crowd with a try within the first 90 seconds of the match, spectators at the Stade de France knew that the Springboks is a team that won’t be easy to defeat. JP Pieterson’s brilliant try was converted by fly-half Morné Steyn, who also kicked three penalties before Patrick Lambie took over the duties at the end and scored a penalty of his own. France realised, after the 13-7 lead at halftime, that the Springboks were too physical and too dominant for the home team. The victors ended their Northern Hemisphere tour with three successive wins.French coach Phillipe Saint-Andre congratulated his team on the commitment they showed throughout the game, but admitted that South Africa is one of the best teams in the world. South African coach Heyneke Meyer said that the great thing about the team is that they are able to adapt, whether they play on home ground or away. Captain Jean De Villiers praised his players for the level of consistency they’ve shown throughout the last 12 months. “If you take the end of last year into account, it’s 13 wins out of 15. Results wise, that’s one of the best years South African rugby’s had for some time,” he said.

KFC Mini Cricket Madnessvs

By Jacqui Jurisch

Edleen Laerskool in Kempton Park was host to the match between the Proteas and their home team. On Tuesday, 19 November, the Primary School’s field was full of excited kids sitting outside the miniature cricket pitch. AB de Villiers was captain of the Proteas team, which consisted of a mix team of women and men that represent the Proteas. Henko, from the Primary School, was the captain of the very excited mixed team, who couldn’t wait to play against the Proteas and make their school proud. The match kicked off with the Edleen team winning the coin toss and chose to field first. Morné Morkel was first batsman and towered over the primary schools fielders. He decided to bat on his knees with his partner Dane van Niekerk. The miniature pitch was no match for the fielders as Henko caught Morkel’s first ball and the umpire yelled “out”. The Primary school supports where thrilled that their

team had caught a ball from one of the country’s well-known bowlers. Mignon du Preez, the Protea women’s captain, was next up to bat. She took the experience as a challenge and hit a few balls over the school building. The home team from Edleen Laerskool was up for batting and hit a few sixes as the Proteas bowled on their knees and even tried to throw a few wide balls. Their little legs ran from wicket to wicket as their batsman and women where hitting the balls over the crowds and the Proteas’ heads.

Towards the end of the match the Proteas were feeling the heat as the scores were getting closer to even. AB de Villiers bowled the last over and kept their winning streak. Batswomen Natasha hit the last ball and it was caught by Morkel. The crowd enjoyed the match and was thrilled to get their autographs from the Protea team. Henko was awarded man of the match for his outstanding performance on the field. The Protea’s captain for the match AB de Villiers said that they were very thrilled to have won the match. “Luckily the home team of Edleen Laerskool didn’t beat us, otherwise we would have lost our lead in the tournament.” The Proteas will be heading to the next school in hopes of keeping their tournament lead. The final score at the end of the match was 98-93 to the Proteas. The Proteas team for this match where represented by AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis, Morné Morkel, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Mignon du Preez, Marizaane Kapp and Dane van Niekerk. What is KFC mini Cricket? It is the first taste of cricket that aspirant young boys and girls are introduced to. The soft ball level gives children the enjoyment that comes with participating in a team sport and gets them acquainted with the basics of the game.
