Hope the paper finds you all well and happy. To the Matric’s, we hope the exams are treating you well and that each and every one of you have an awesome matric farewell.

In this week’s paper we have more hailstones, Cape Town’s disastrous storm and a weird tremor that was felt throughout Johannesburg. Scary stuff.

On the inspirational side, read the story about Brandon Menezes, a local hero.

Isabel Linda and her family have been waiting over eight years for their prizes.

The Linda’s took part in a game show that was hosted by the SABC “Power Play” in 2005. They won the second prize of R17 000 in prizes, consisting of a microwave, geyser blanket, television, washing machine and other household appliances.

As reported by the Daily Sun in October, no one at SABC was willing to help her, and she confirmed that it is still the case today. Apparently her family was not the only one hat has not received their prizes from the SABC. Buli Siwani admitted at the time that the process does take a long time and that they were trying to rectify the situation. Since then, Buli has left the SABC. The Linda’s have only received a microwave and a geyser blanket. “I had to fight for

those prizes, we even had to drive from Boksburg (where she lives with her husband and daughter) to Alberton to collect those things from the companies,” Isabel Linda said. Mrs Linda also stated that there are several families who are still waiting for their prizes from the SABC. Some of the family members that took part in the game show have unfortunately passed away and their remaining families have yet to receive their prizes.

Twenty-two-year-old Sipho Pretorius from Benoni has been handed the reigns of Virgin Mobile’s new flagship store in Braamfontein. The concept store is the first of its kind, combining a Virgin Mobile retail store with South Africa’s growing coffee culture and a variety of interesting features and activities to create a space for the community to work, socialise and test-drive the latest phones and accessories.Pretorius is currently studying a B.Com in Financial Accounting and has previously worked at leading retailers in the technology and fashion sectors before joining Virgin Mobile. While with the brand, Pretorius has been involved in the opening of Virgin Mobile’s recently revamped stores in Maponya Mall and Cedar Square. While at the Eastgate store, sales were taken to the highest in the country.“I get things happening wherever I go,” says Pretorius. “I feel truly humbled by Virgin Mobile giving me such a great opportunity. I can only repay

them by giving them a successful store. I want Virgin Mobile Braamfontein to be the ‘it’-store in and around Joburg, and to see Virgin Mobile being recognised as a lifestyle brand.” When asked about the store’s location, Pretorius said, “Braamfontein is youthful, colourful and vibey, and that’s what Virgin Mobile is all about - so it’s a great fit for the brand. I look forward to making the area my home too, it’s a great place to be.” Although studying and running a store from 07:00 to 18:00 weekdays, and 8:00 to 16:00 on Saturdays, doesn’t leave much time for hobbies and a social life, when Soweto-born Pretorius does get some free time he enjoys spending it with friends, going to the movies or reading a good novel. The go-getter’s favourite quote is by Thomas Edison, who says, “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is usually dressed in overalls and looks like work.”

Meet Mr Brandon Menezes, the boy who’s “dis” en-abled him to do everything a normal 12-year-old can do. Brandon was born with no knees and up to the age of 10 he was smaller than his 1 and 3-year-old brothers. That was until he saw Oscar Pistorius and decided that he wanted to have his legs amputated and to start using prosthetic legs.

Brandon had the intense surgery on 11 October 2010, and just 10 days after already

had his stitches removed. By 23 October 2010, Coning bandages were put on his stumps to start shaping them for prosthetics. By 5 December 2011 Brandon received his very first prosthesis after rehabilitation and he grew 5cm in three months. However, soon after Brandon had to get new sockets made as he grew too much. He has to have several sockets made each year at R48 000 per pair, not including the liners, feet and servicing of the knees. Ever since Brandon received his prosthetic legs he has been able to dance, ride his bike with his friends, swim, ride horses, play sports and ride quads. Brandon has no limitation anymore. Currently he is performing excellently on the sports field, where he is competing in 100 meter sprints, 200 meter sprints and long jump. Brandon has even been on YOTV. Brandon is always positive and motivated and never frowns upon doing hard work and keeping his core strong with hard exercise and motivation. He has come such a long way in the past 2 years.

East Rand Toyota, in conjunction with other sponsors, are trying to raise funds over the next eight months for Brandon to be able to get the brand new Genuim Product. This product is a ground-breaking and intelligent next-generation leg prosthesis system that is far more superior to all others in terms of functionality and design. Its new, unique functions make the Genuim a technological breakthrough in prosthetics. Brandon mows the lawn, washes the cars and does the dishes for extra money so he can save for his new Genuim knees. He even offers to do his neighbours’ gardens.

Brandon has outgrown the paediatric range of prosthetics and his feet are too small in proportion to his body (size 2 - age 13). This creates problems with his balance, which is not good for his back and hips. The Genium Knee will last him well into his adult years and will allow him to drive a manual car, walk backwards, upstairs, downstairs and over obstacles. The Genuim Product will cost R970 254 for two legs. The liners: R 8 607 each, sockets: R 20 520 each, knees: R 410 400 each and the pilon and feet: R 45 600 each. Brandon’s dream is to go to Rio to take part in the Paralympics in 2016, partaking in the 200m sprint, swim, row and riding the Carbon Bike EvoJet handcycle. See YouTube:

Brandon Menezes to see Brandon before and after prosthetics. Companies and individuals are looking for people to sponsor him in any way they can, whether it be to raise funds via fundraising events or by just sponsoring in general. Anyone who feels that they want to support the Toyota Knights in the cause to invest in Brandon’s future can make a donation into the following bank account: Knight Charity Account, FNB, Account Numbers: 62071512274 - Business Cheque Account. Reference: Brandon. Should you need more information please contact Martin Erwee, Master Sales Executive on 011 841 1700/ 072 200 7212 or e-mail him at [email protected].

Sien julle volgende week

It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving – Mother Teresa. It’s the silly season people. If you have not realised that, carefully lift your hand above your head and feel for a solid mass because it’s very possible you may be living under a rock. The shop windows are dressed with all things snowy and glittery, fuel prices dropped, people are giving the final lap the last of the reserved energy and, if I’m not mistaken, this past week I received a courteous smile and wave in a situation which would have earned me the one finger salute in June. So evidently the spirit of Christmas, kwanza, the holiday season or whatever you call it, is upon us.Thinking about the December holiday season, from as far back as I like to remember, has always lead my thoughts towards the universal meaning of this time of year. Has too much emphasis been placed on the activity around this time of year? Does the aggressive push towards the advertising of everything condition the mind to forget reason? There are many other related questions, however that is not something I feel I should get into at the moment. Doing something that will benefit someone who cannot do anything for you in return, someone who does not even expect to be shown favour and most importantly who will truly appreciate however little the gesture. I’m a supporter of organisations formed with the intention to serve the needy, however experiences I’ve had during serving on the Department of Community Safety’s Youth-desk, and brief excursions to neighbouring countries, I’ve learnt the value of physically touching a life. I’ve learnt to appreciate even the worst day and most importantly felt the warm sense of inner fulfilment that results from the appreciation, which is sometimes all, the less fortunate in society give in return. This year the idea of convincing people to ‘buy one more’ during Christmas shopping, and personally delivering whatever the bought item is to an orphan in a home, a street kid, a gogo who has several hungry mouths to feed or whoever is at need came to mind. As conclusion to this week’s short conversation, I question and challenge; would it be possible for you to take some time off to buy one more and get your hands to touch a life?Share your experiences and photos with us at [email protected], but most importantly share of yourself this season.

Security measures that robbers DO consider being deterrents: • Security Patrols • Electric fences • Detection beams • CCTV • Small dogs that sleep inside the house – robbers consider this to be the biggest deterrent of all Recommendations that came from research: • Make sure all shrubs and trees are trimmed back so they do not allow a burglar to conceal himself while attempting to open a window or door.• If possible, plant bushes with prickly thorns around these locations. They are a cheap deterrent.• Don’t stop your security awareness at the outside walls of your house. Your yard areas (if any) also deserve attention. In general, don’t leave anything around the yard that might help a burglar get into your house. Ladders, stackable boxes or any garden tools should be put away, preferably in a locked cabinet. Many burglars have used the property owner’s own tools to break into a home. Don’t place outdoor furniture tables nearby the

house. These could become an easy stepladder to the roof. To discourage potential climbers, spread grease on any metal drainpipes if they are close to windows. Use Vaseline or clear automotive grease, depending on the colour of the pipe (or replace them with plastic pipes). Yes, criminals do climb up drainpipes. Think about it, most second story windows are left un-secure and make a house easy to gain entry to.• A barking dog, changing your daily routine and the presence of closed-circuit TV (CCTV) could make your home a less attractive target to criminals.• Given that robbers tend to case-out a property and the residents’ comings and goings for as long as two weeks, it is highly-recommended that you deviate from your usual routine regularly. Change your patterns every week by leaving and returning home at different times, using different routes and visiting different shops to what you typically do.• In South Africa, the importance of employing extreme caution when hiring domestic workers and other service providers cannot be underestimated. Be careful who you let into your home

Consumers in the Boksburg area will soon enjoy the pleasure of walking into a one-stop customer service centre to pay for their municipal rates and services. The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s Boksburg Customer Care Area (CCA) office, located on Trichardt Street, is undergoing an upgrade which is set to improve operations at the rates hall and ensure customers have a better experience when doing business with the EMM. The Metro is changing the face of its Customer Care Area offices throughout the city to a uniform look and feel. This will ensure a more logical flow where the customers will be serviced and have access to more services, such as paying bills, querying accounts, booking facilities and more, at a single service point. The process of upgrading the facility commenced early in October and is scheduled to be concluded at the end of June 2014. Customer service at the CCA will not be affected by the on-going work. The rates hall will still be operational for the duration of the upgrades, however only three of the six cashiers will be open. The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan wishes to apologise for any inconvenience caused by the work.

Hailstorm havoc

1. Keep an eye on the weather before a hailstorm strikes. While it is difficult to accurately predict a hailstorm, they are most commonly associated with severe weather such as thunderstorms. Check your local newspaper or weather channel for the daily forecast, and plan your schedules accordingly in the event of severe weather.2. Take shelter indoors. Get inside a sturdy house or other building. As soon as you hear thunder and lightning, the threat for hail is possible. Open-sided structures are not safe as they are completely exposed to the elements. Being caught outdoors is extremely dangerous during a hailstorm, as you could be struck with falling hailstones.3. Protect yourself if you are driving. Motorists should pull off to the side of the road, away from trees or other areas where debris could fall, and stay undercover until the storm has passed. Hailstones, especially large ones, can easily crack or shatter a car windshield. If you can get to a nearby parking garage or other sturdy, covered structure, do so.

4. Ensure that all animals are sheltered and accounted for. If you see a storm approaching, herd all animals indoors or into their respective shelters to wait out the storm.

Om totsiens te sê is soos ‘n nat kombers om die skouers.

So ‘n swaar gevoel van verlies.

The earth tremor that hit Johannesburg on the morning of the 18th measured four on the Richter scale, the council for Geoscience said.

The epicenter was near the University of Johannesburg, just before 10:00 the morning. No reports of damage or injury have been made, Tshepo Motlhale the division chief for disaster risk management stated. Tremors are a result of a stress that builds up in the earth’s crust. When the stress becomes too great it releases in the form of a quake.

Many have taken to Twitter to express their experiences with this tremor.Gabikadish @MyNews24 – felt it at home while studying, it definitely kept me awake.MissMarlys @MyNews24 – I’m in the CBD, our building shook for about a minute. Me, I’m still shaking.Others have taken the situation and turned it into a joking opportunity.WarrenGinger – was the earth just twerking right now?Ejaz_k - #tremor was caused when #Malema said “No Media Allowed!” That represented a seismic change in the norm, hence the tremor.

Vintage Chimes

tame TIMES sat with Vintage chimes, a newly established instrumental and vocal band whose playlist consists of a number of cover songs from well-known performers.

All the members of this talented band, including local Alberton drummer Sam Nel, are students from The Campus of Performing Arts (COPA). Vintage chimes started out as an all- girl band, but later gained the help from three extremely talented boys that made the band complete.

from the director who brought us Children of Men and harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban brings us his latest masterpiece which is guaranteed to send you out of this world. Set in the present day we find ourselves over 100 km away from planet earth where we meet Dr Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) and veteran astronaut Matt Kewalski (George Clooney) on a maintenance repair mission on the Hubble telescope when soon disaster strikes and their world gets turned upside down. This amazing sci fi thriller will have you on the edge of your seat and instantly grabs you to its ultra realistic

CGI and makes you feel like you are up and out of planet earth and been placed in a whole new reality of space and all of its wonders and dangers. This dramatic Sci-fi is one of if not the best movie of the year with its heart pounding effects and clever story telling. Gravity is a movie full of emotion and fear of being alone. Most off all Gravity tells us that as human beings it’s in us to fight to survive. I’d like to thank Ster Kinekor Eastgate and the Tame Times for giving me this opportunity to review and experience the best movie of the year!

By Chantal ThurlbyA different and refreshingly fun game at Carnival City.Excitement at Carnival City never seems to stop, with comedy sessions, extravaganza shows, bright lights and now a new type of fascinating game and show – Beer Pong. Beer Pong is held in the Carnival Sports Bar on Fridays and Saturdays between 19:00 and 22:00. This year the championship granted the opportunity to win a trip to Las Vegas. How it works: The game requires a R50 entry fee, steady hand, a loud mouth, faulty hearing and a liver of steel. Depending on your luck, you could have left a reigning champion with bragging rights for the night, and R1200 worth of gaming credits richer as prize money. The game is played on a Ping-Pong-like table, only slightly smaller, by teams of two. Ten cups, filled to a-third of a cup

The family of Diepsloot toddlers Yonelisa and Zandile Mali, who were killed last month, have expressed shock over the death of a

baby in the same area.“We are surprised about this because we thought all this was over when they arrested that man but it’s still continuing,” the toddlers’ grandmother Vinah Mali said in Xhosa on

Monday.The 7-month-old baby’s mutilated body was

found in a shack in the area, North of Johannesburg, on Sunday. The baby’s

mother reported the death to the police early on Sunday morning, claiming rats attacked her child. When police arrived on the scene, the woman had disappeared. Pathology tests apparently confirmed that rats attacked

the child.Police spokesperson Tsekiso Mofokeng said a case of murder was being investigated. “We have registered a case of murder, but initially it was an inquest,” Mofokeng said. Police arrived to find the baby’s body with a foot missing. “Further investigations informed police that the foot was bitten off by rats.” Police were still awaiting the results of the post mortem to definitively determine the cause of death. Mofokeng said the baby’s mother was missing and had still not been located by Monday morning, contrary to

media reports.

The SAPS Merit Awards at Carnival City on Saturday night was one of elegance and class. The different nominees from various areas were dressed to kill and ready to be honoured for all the hard work they do. The Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Smadz Matsepe. Clr Mondli Gungubela, the mayor of Ekurhuleni, attended the event along with a number of other high profile

people.Awards went out to best support, best reservist, best volunteer and best community policing forum. “We should celebrate and thank the men and women in blue of the SAPS. Ekurhuleni is the place of peace. We can never thank you enough, we are very grateful,” said Gibson Thula, Ekurhuleni

spokesperson for the evening. Nominees for surrounding areas were Anna Ueckerman from Brakpan (Best Support Member), Vuyani Stafa from Reiger Park (Best Volunteer) and Jordache Pillay from Benoni (Best Crime Prevention). “Without the SAPS, there would be no number one, never give up!” said a representative from

the mayor’s office. The Best Community Policing Forum award was allotted to Alberton CPF. Best support member Xolani Kenneth Tyam from Bedfordview. Best Reservist MM Zulu from Vosloorus. Best Volunteer MM Mdaka from Kathelong. Best VISPOL Lebohang Ramaesa from Tsakane. Best crime prevention Olga Masethla. Best detective Simphiwe Zwane from Duduza. Best team Actionville. Overall top cop was awarded to Olga Masethla. Masethla has been involved in the Back to school campaigns in her community which served as means of encouraging school children to go back to school and channel their energies into learning instead of

keeping the wrong company.

A total of 135 648 registrations were recorded in Ekurhuleni, which included re-registrations, new registrations and people who moved wards.

The registration process was characterised by smooth operations, with the vast majority of stations opening on time and people registering quickly and efficiently. In addition, the registration process enjoyed the support of all political parties, community leaders and the population throughout the country, with only a tiny number of incidents recorded on Saturday, 9 November. These isolated incidents were quickly resolved with the support of political parties, community leaders and security services. The end result was a smooth and efficient registration process, in which 2 512 219 were assisted nationally, at the country’s 22 263 registration stations. 1 088 015, or 43.3%, were new voters registering for the first time. According to the IEC, their commitment to democracy has helped boost overall registration levels to almost 77% of eligible voters, from 73.6% before the registration weekend.A further 1.17m people (or 46.6%) used the opportunity to change their existing

registration to a d i f f e r e n t v o t i n g s t a t i o n , and about 1 0 . 1 % (253 098) re-registered at their existing voting station. Most encouragingly, over 80% of all new registrations were young people, helping to boost registration levels of those in the 20 to 29 age group from 49.1% to 54.5%. While the number of registered voters in the 18 to 19 age group almost tripled, from 167 535 to 434 370, the registration percentage of 22.6% remains the lowest for all age groups, and presents an ongoing challenge for all South Africans to encourage a new generation of voters to participate. Gender: the new registrations were largely in line with the general population trend in South Africa, with 53% registered women and 47%

men. Provincial outcomes: Gauteng ranked second, with 572 395.All those who have still not taken the opportunity to register can still do so before next year’s elections, by visiting their local municipal offices.

By Jacqui Jurisch Hunting is considered by many as a means of obtaining food. This is not the main focus in Africa. People go on organised hunts for fun so they can take pictures of their trophy and say things like “I killed an innocent animal for my own enjoyment.” It can be considered to be highly selfish to cage an animal and shoot it. Lions and other big cats in particular are being killed by being locked in an enclosure and then being shot at by hunters for the thrill of their kill. Lions are being farmed under appalling conditions in South Africa for

“canned hunting”, which tourists pay thousands to shoot them through the fence.Poaching in our country has to become a national tourist attraction; thousands of people come to hunt members of the big five to brag about it to their friends and family back in their country. The annual PICA awards were held by the Magazine Publishers Association of South Africa, better known as the Oscars of the magazine industry in South Africa. The event was hosted at Emperors Palace on Thursday, 14 November. The awards involve all magazines and celebrates the excellent publishing and editorial work in the South African magazine industry. New Media Publishing emerged victorious at the 44th annual PICA awards. From a tough selection of entrants, they received five awards for the publications it produces for Woolworths, Plascon and other titles. Commenting on the awards, Irna van Zyl, founder and executive director of New Media Publishing said, “It’s truly been an amazing week. We expected some wins, but the recognition New Media has received from the industry, both locally and globally, has been both overwhelming and humbling.”

Melony Boucher, PICA project manager added, “Kudos all around to a job well done! To those who entered the 2013 MPASA PICA Awards, I salute you for filling our world with brilliant journalism, breath-taking and eye-popping visuals, and bursts of colour. We’re

already looking forward to welcoming you to the 2014 event.”

SARIE walked away as the most-awarded magazine brand in South Africa, after clinching no less than seven coveted awards at the event.Editor Michélle van Breda said, “I always knew SARIE was a phenomenal magazine, because we have a phenomenal audience. We are inspired by the Afrikaans-speaking women, and even our English-speaking

readers, who are positive, proudly South African and find inspiration in legacy and innovation. To win one PICA is exciting; to win seven plus a Bookmark bronze on one night is crazy. As a team we could not be happier, but we realise to keep on producing quality and especially reader-relevant content is a huge task, but as always we’re more than up for the challenge. We are excited by what the future holds for a magazine brand like SARIE.”All pictures taken from MPASA.org

Springboks impress at MurrayfieldThe Springboks showed class against the Scots as they battled head to head in the end of year tour in Murrayfield over the weekend.South Africa’s forward dominance once again came to the fore as they hammered the Scots in the tight phases. The starting front row of Guthro Steenkamp, Adriaan Strauss and Frans Malherbe were solid with veteran Bakkies Botha and Flip van der Merwe as pillars of strength in the lock position. The loose forward trio of Francious Louw, Duane Vermeulen and Willem Alberts, was uncompromising at the tackle situation as Alberts showcased some huge hits making it very difficult for Scotland to get any momentum. This coupled with an almost flawless display by Pat Lambie, in the unfamiliar role of flyhalf, kept the Springboks on the front foot. South Africa’s backline defence was impeccable, led by world class defence organiser Jacques Fourie who ensured that any front ball that Scotland got had them driven back by a very enthusiastic South African backline. This coupled with the man of the match Willie Le Roux’s performance, South Africa was unstoppable. South Africa is set to take on France on 23 November in Paris. Judging from Sunday’s performance the French should be in for a very hard contest, as the Springboks will hope to come home undefeated in the end of year European tour.

Scotland struggled to make any inroads against a superior Springbok side.

Mapaseka Makhanya has been around the athletics scene for some time, but 2013 has been a stellar year for her, culminating in her victory in the SPAR Grand Prix. She was nominated for SA Sports Star of the Year, the only female among males but lost out to Itumeleng Khune. However she won the Sportswoman of the Year ahead of Lee-Anne Pace and Mandisa Williams.Makhanya took up road running this year because she wanted to build up her stamina and get used to running longer distances. Although she has never made a secret of her preference for running on the track, she took to road running like a duck to water, and as a result, the bubbly single mother also known as Mapasexy gathered enough Grand Prix points to finish the year well on top of the Grand Prix ladder. She started the year by finishing second in the Cape Town SPAR Women’s Challenge race and third in Port Elizabeth. She took victory in Durban, and had a record-breaking victory in Pretoria. By this stage, she had built up enough points to make it virtually impossible for anyone to overtake her, and although she finished out of the top ten in the final race in Johannesburg in October, the Bonitas (formerly Transnet) runner had done enough to ensure that the keys to the first prize of a new Nissan Micra would be handed over to her.

“This has been a great year. I won the Grand Prix and I ran and won my first marathon. Next year I plan on winning another car, and have asked for a leather interior,” Makhanya said. Three-times Grand Prix winner, René Kalmer finished second on the log, with 92 points, 13 behind Makhanya. Kalmer’s sister Christine was third with 77. René will receive R30 000 and Christine will pocket R17 500.Their Nedbank Gauteng Central teammate Irvette van Zyl, who was unable to run in Johannesburg because of a knee injury, came fourth, with 68 points. The two-times Grand Prix winner will receive R15 000.With five of the top 10 on the SPAR Grand Prix ladder wearing the Nedbank Central Gauteng colours, the club easily won the club competition with 343 points – nearly double those of their nearest rivals, Boxer KZN, who had 177. Transnet was third, with 138 points.

Willie Smit has won the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge with a time of two hours, eight minutes and 42 seconds on Sunday morning, followed by teammate Herman Fouché. Teams in the lead group were Bonitas, WCCA, Abantu, NuWater, Europcar, Westvaal, ASG, Mecer, Complete Cyclist, New Horizons, and Swift.Smit said his win comes from plain hard work and many hours of practice. The winner in the ladies category was Ashleigh Moolman. Her time has not yet been officially calculated by the time we went to print. The 17th edition of world’s largest road race saw more than 31 000 riders take to the streets of Johannesburg in various categories. Making the most of the early morning conditions, Smit powered through the 94.7 kilometre route ahead of the rest of the pack. While some riders had spent a total of six hours on the road, Smit and others in the elite category maintained a fast pace, making the race look easy. Many supporters gathered around hanging over the barriers, screaming and shouting for their team members and some just generally for everyone.
