Google tm has selected Percy Human, vice principal of Glenanda Primary School, as an attendee at the next Google Teacher Academy (GTA), to be held in Stockholm, Sweden on 10 December.The Google Teacher Academy is a two-day intensive program that recognises educators who are doing innovative and exciting things in their schools and classrooms with technology. Mr Human was selected to represent Glenanda Primary School. The dedicated educator applied this year to GTA after hearing that they wanted South Africans to apply. Mr Human submitted his one minute video and received 650 hits within the first week of it being on YouTube. Thereafter he had to submit a research document presenting his district and how Glenanda Primary was using Google. “I feel very special. I am proud to be working at Glenanda Primary School as it has presented all these opportunities for me. It is not only me; it is the parents, students and teachers as well. This is a ‘we’ celebration,” Mr Human told tame TIMES.Fifty participants from different countries across the globe will get hands-on experience with Google’s products and technologies, learn about innovative instructional strategies, and receive resources to share with colleagues. Upon completion, Academy participants become Google Certified Teachers who share what they learn with other educators in their local regions and beyond.“As a long time user of Google products, I’ve seen the power it brings to the Glenanda

It’s the silly season people. If you have not realised that, carefully lift your hand above your head and feel for a solid mass because it’s very possible you may be living under a rock. The shop windows are dressed with all things snowy and glittery, fuel prices dropped, people are giving the final lap the last of the reserved energy and, if I’m not mistaken, this past week I received a courteous smile and wave in a situation which would have earned me the one finger salute in June. So evidently the spirit of Christmas, kwanza, the holiday season or whatever you call it, is upon us.Thinking about the December holiday season, from as far back as I like to remember, has always lead my thoughts towards the universal meaning of this time of year. Has too much emphasis been placed on the activity around this time of year? Does the aggressive push towards the advertising of everything condition the mind to forget reason? There are many other related questions, however that is not something I feel I should get into at the moment. Rather, doing something that will benefit someone who cannot do anything for you in return, someone who does not even expect to be shown favour and most importantly who will truly appreciate however little the gesture. I’m a supporter of organisations formed with the intention to serve the needy, however experiences I’ve had during serving on the Department of Community Safety’s Youth-desk, and brief excursions to neighbouring countries, I’ve learnt the value of physically touching a life. I’ve learnt to appreciate even the worst day and most importantly felt the warm sense of inner fulfilment that results from the appreciation the less fortunate in society give in return. This year the idea of convincing people to ‘buy one more’ during Christmas shopping and personally delivering whatever the bought item is to an orphan in a home, a street kid, a gogo who has several hungry mouths to feed, or whoever is at need, came to mind. As conclusion to this week’s short conversation, I question and challenge: Would it be possible for you to take some time off to buy one more and get your hands to touch a life?

Dear Nieto HernandezYour article, Time to man-out, impressed me so much that I just have to respond. I am a mother of two middle-aged sons and married for fifty five years to a wonderful man, and so I consider myself well informed to the plight of men. On the subject of prostate and breast cancer, I would like to see a group of men meeting to just chill out and talk openly about this sort of thing. It’s a big worry that should not be suffered alone and maybe it’s easier to talk when there is an eager listener that can encourage support and understand their point of view. As a woman I would like to say men that can cry and men that face their demons openly are strong men, and I for one think women (wives, girlfriends, friends and family) can and should be supportive and compassionate on such matters. It always helps when there is someone you can confide in that will be sympathetic and not pushy.My recommendation is, start a man-out group, wear a blue ribbon to identify cancer for man-out, a tribe of strong men willing to face whatever, with wisdom and support from like-minded men. Following clearance by an independent investigation of all allegations of corruption and fraud in the awarding of its smart meters tender, City Power is ready to continue with the roll-out of smart meters across the City of Johannesburg.Over the past eight months, City Power has installed 153 smart meters in Ferndale and 2500 with large power users in Johannesburg as part of a project business trial.The business trial comes to an end on 15 November and will be followed by the full deployment of the smart meters, starting with a 50 000 smart meter roll-out this financial year as part of phase 1 of deployment.Already, City Power has started with a pre-installation audit. Fifty suburbs have been audited already, and community engagement and communication will commence soon. The following suburbs will be the first to benefit from the phase 1 roll-out of 50 000 smart meters. These include: Glenvista, Crown Gardens, Suideroord, Rosettenville, Turf Club, Kenilworth, Turffontein, Haddon, South Hills, Gillview, Tulisa Park, The Hill, Ridgeway, Robertsham, Towerby, Rewlatch, Booysens and Ophirton. The smart meters roll-out commences this

financial year, and is scheduled to conclude in September/October 2015.“By deploying smart meters, the City of Johannesburg is able to receive accurate electricity usage information, accurate data with which to plan future infrastructure expansions, and in the long term, we will be able to build a smart city.”Customers benefit as the technology enables the city to relay critical information to their houses and access factual information regarding their billing. They will be able to perform independent monthly bill reconciliations and validations, to proactively manage spending on electricity throughout the month.The initial phase is focusing on Larger Power Users (LPU) located throughout the City of Johannesburg. “Vula’mehlo – Keep Your Eyes Open”, the brain-child of the Molalatladi Safety Moves has partnered with Gauteng Province Community Safety to launch a one day Safety and Security Expo on 23 November at Klipriviersberg Recreation Centre, commencing at 09:00.The Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Faith Mazibuko, and the Joburg Executive Mayor Parks Tau will lead an interactive workshop where community members will be able to engage with a panel of safety and security experts.Other stakeholders will include households, schools, places of worship, business, NGO’s, CPF’s, exhibitors and celebrities“We are launching this initiative in the south of Johannesburg as a pilot project,” said Enos Magwabeni, the co-founder of Molalatladi Safety Moves. “As soon as this gets traction, we will expand to the other parts of Johannesburg and eventually cover the whole Gauteng region with the aim of going national,” he said. This first expo targets the communities of Mulbarton, Aspen Hills, Gleneagles, Liefde & Vrede, Bassonia, Glenvista, Glenanda,

Suideroord, Alan Manor, Meredale, Winchester Hills, Mondeor, Ridgeway, Naturena, Ormonde View, Kibler Park, Eikenhof, Rispark, Patlyn, Mayfield Park, Alveda Park, Jacksons and Diepkloof Extension. Droves of people were seen making their way to voter registration stations on 9 and 10 November in preparation for next year’s national elections.South Africa will be celebrating 20 years of democracy in 2014, making it a historical landmark event for our young nation. Also of great importance is the inclusion of “Born-

Free” voters for the very first time.These young citizens are part of the first generation to have been born outside the existence of Apartheid, giving them a unique voice and outlook on South Africa’s political landscape. According to Tejis Devchand (18), the prospect of voting in his first election is quite exciting. “We, as Born Frees, just want to be part of the decision,” he said, after completing his registration at Glenvista High’s School station. “We want change and it is definitely not happening at the moment, under the ANC. We want our vote to make a difference.”The importance of voter registration has not been solely experienced by the new generation of voters, though. Manuel Branco (31) also registered this weekend for the first time. Convinced by his late girlfriend of the importance to have his vote counted, Branco

was there to make good on his promise to vote in the next national election.“Like most people, I just want the best for the country,” he said.

At the mature age of 67, Glenvista resident Jenny Peters launched her first album, My Dad’s Kinda Music. The 16 song disc is a tribute to her late father Solly Germanus.

“He always wanted me to do this. When I told him that I was going to a recording studio, he replied ‘that is the best

news I have ever heard’,” Peters said.tame TIMES met up with the Marists Brother music teacher. One can see Peters was very fond of her father by the way she retells stories about him. “My dad loved music and was a great entertainer himself. He was a great influence in my career,” Peters recalled. She will forever hear the resounding phrase “You’ve got it kid!”Even though Germanus wasn’t alive to see the CD launch of his daughter, he is sure to be smiling down from heaven.Peters started playing piano at the age of 5 and had five teachers who were all sourced by her father. She played for dancing schools and entered many talent competitions. The cover of her album is a picture taken in 1963 at a talent competition at the Adelphie Bioscope in Rosettenville. When asked how she feels about the CD launch, Peters said she feels she has really achieved something great. SanctificationThe word “sanctification” is one of those ancient Greek words that modern English Bibles still use because it’s packed with meaning. In short, it means “set apart for a purpose”, “holiness”, or “cleansed”. But modern English translations still use “sanctification” because it means even more than all that.1 Corinthians 1:30And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption...When you put your faith in Christ you are justified, which means that God now declares you righteous and not guilty and you are no longer in sin. God then “sets you apart” for his purposes, “sanctifying” you. But your experience of this reality increases and you still need to grow into becoming more like Jesus. This growing process is your “sanctification”. You are set apart and becoming more set apart as you grow. And as you grow, your joy in God also grows.God promises that you will reach maturity in Him and perfect in every good work by continuing in faith (Hebrews 13:21). In Jesus, no sin can ever stop God’s love for you. And even more, the Christian life is one of increasing joy, holiness, love and good works! It only ever gets better!

We acknowledge the concerns of residents surrounding the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve (KNR) and wish to respond to some of the issues raised. Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) conducted a seasonal burn to ensure firebreaks are in place over the dry winter. This will be complemented with a second series of firebreaks as part of the summer safety campaign in reserves. As JCPZ we ensure the firebreaks are maintained, especially during the dry season.In terms of the fencing concerns, a contractor has been appointed to repair breeches in the fencing. The smart card fee is anti-poor. This is according to Mr Manny de Freitas. I find it strange that a man whose salary comes from the exploitation of the poor worker at Marikana mine is suddenly the champion of the poor. Mr de Freitas has never fought for the better wages and living conditions of the poor workers in the mines, factories, farms and domestic workers, and yet his fat salary and the salaries of all members of parliament are paid out of the taxes of the exploited masses of the working class who in return receive poor service delivery.He claims that the Midvaal demarcation is about ANC dominance. For me it is about cutting the cost of running so many municipalities with state budgets and administrations that have no effect on the improvement of the lives of our people.On their Blue project to win Gauteng, De Freitas thinks that they should avoid the inclusion of Emfuleni Metro, but then how do you win Gauteng without Emfuleni? My own view is that at the centre of our political debates we should start talking seriously about the cost of running

nine provinces, which according to me equate nine governments within one state. Let us consider the costs against the achievements made in the past 20 years and measure the benefits if we had fewer provinces without premiers who were run by administrators without fat salaries, corruption and misdirected service delivery.Let us also look at the opposition parties, do they add value to our democracy or is it the waste of taxpayer money? When Mr de Freitas was told that 16million South Africans, including the 16-year-olds who will be applying for the first time to obtain ID’s, will not pay R140, he said that they will continue to fight for the poor to be exempted from paying a fee for an ID.It is confusing to notice that we have a member of parliament who is not aware that all persons on the SASSA database are people who earn grants of all sorts, ranging from the government pension fund, child grant, foster care, early pension, disability grant etc, and according to the last figures, there are 16million South Africans living on grants.

Vir my ou Gysie was die bedanking by sy werk byna soos dood in die familie. Kollegas het soos broers geword en saam het hulle ‘n band gevorm so sterk ek dink hulle sou ‘n sikloon kon trotseer. Wanneer ‘n mens 20 jaar by ‘n maatskappy werk sien ‘n mens kollegas se babas groei tot universiteit student, en jou eie het al die nes verlaat. Vir Gysie het dit tog later beter geraak. Dis nou so rustig om hom sonder fronse of Gaviscon te sien rondloop. Sy vriende het hom regop gehou deur maagsere en spanning, wat nou iets is van die verlede is - en al die werkies by die huis is gedoen! TIP: Soms is groet nie net sleg nie - sprei jou vlerke en vlieg hoog!

A suspect was arrested on 4 November in Forest Hill for theft out of a motor vehicle.The complainant alleged that when he parked his vehicle everything was in good order and there was a 1x100 meter electrical extension inside the vehicle. Later that evening the complainant’s neighbour called the complainant and informed him that he saw an unknown person taking the abovementioned item from the complainant’s vehicle and he had caught him. Booysens SAPS were contacted and arrested the suspect.

A suspect was arrested in Main Street for possession of dagga by Booysens Crime Prevention unit on 9 November.The officers stopped an unknown male and asked for permission to search him. The suspect agreed and when he was searched, the members found three small plastic bags containing dagga.

Three suspects were arrested in West Turffontein for possession of an unlicensed firearm by Booysens Crime Prevention unit on 7 November.The SAPS noticed a white Toyota Tazz with four unknown males sitting inside the car. The officers tried to stop the vehicle and the driver ignored them and started driving recklessly at a high speed, refusing to stop. The officers managed to stop the vehicle along Turf Club Road. One suspect jumped out of the vehicle and ran away. The officers apprehend three suspects. Upon searching the vehicle they noticed a silver revolver firearm with its serial number filed off.

Well done to Detective Sgt Rangwanasha from Booysens SAPS. He attained a 7-year imprisonment sentence for a housebreak-ing suspect. The incident took place in July 2012.

Members of Mondeor SAPS and Gauteng k9 unit arrested a house robber on 13 November in Kibler Park. Two firearms were recovered from the suspect. A case of house robbery is being investigated by Mondeor Detective Branch.

A suspect was arrested on 5 November for assault GBH by Booysens SAPS in Turffontein.

The complainant was at a house in Turffontein area when he was assaulted by a person known to him. He opened a case and the suspect was arrested the following day.

They attended every Thursday from 9 to 12, during school terms. Last Thursday they celebrated the end of the

Honda has just blasted into the neighbourhood with a brand new and beautiful dealership near The Glen. The dealership was originally home to Peugeot and Citroën. However, CMH Group, who manage all three of these brands, felt that Honda would be much more at home in the South of Johannesburg.Jannie Nel, former Dealer Principal (DP), was tasked with the mission of rearranging

the automotive powerhouse and finally bring Honda to the people in the South. The reigns have since been passed on to new DP, Dylan Pepperell, who welcomed the VIP guests, including major players at CMH, at the launch cocktail party that was held on 8 November. The red carpet was literally rolled out to welcome staff and guests to the event, where snacks and drinks were enjoyed by all. Mr Pepperell welcomed everyone and thanked them for their involvement in bringing the dealership to fruition. Guests had the opportunity to tour the premises. When Johannesburg golfer Sipho Bujela made his debut in the South African Open Championship last year, he became the first black amateur exempted from qualifying for the country’s flagship event.In January, the rising star secured his pro card at the Vusi Ngubeni Qualifying School and 11 months later, the Sunshine Tour rookie is relishing his maiden pro debut in the 103rd edition of the second oldest national championships at the Glendower Golf Club from 21 to 24 November. “It is an exciting time for me because last year I was there as an amateur, but now I’ll be playing as a pro,” Bujela said.“The SA Open was a great experience last year and I know I’m in for another great experience this year. The SA Open is very special and it is the one tour-nament every South African wants to win at least once in their lifetime. I dream of winning our Open.”Having played a lot of amateur golf at the par-72 layout, the young gun is quite familiar with Glendower and the challenges of the classic course.“This course really tests your ability to stay focused. You need to know what has to be done, and you need to stick to your game plan; if you don’t, you

Willie Smit has won the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge with a time of two hours, eight minutes and 42 seconds on Sunday morning, followed by teammate Herman Fouché. Teams in the lead group were Bonitas, WCCA, Abantu, NuWater, Europcar, Westvaal, ASG, Mecer, Complete Cyclist, New Horizons, and Swift.Smit said his win comes from plain hard work and many hours of practice. “I’m so thrilled. I’m happy I could pull it off for my sponsor Team Bonitas. And also for Herman Fouche, who came in second. It was all our team effort. It shows hard work paid off.” The winner in the ladies category was Ashleigh Moolman. Her time has not yet been officially calculated by the time of going to print. The 17th edition of world’s largest road race saw more than 31 000 riders take to the streets of Johannesburg in various categories. Making the most of the early morning conditions, Smit powered through the 94.7 kilometre route ahead of the rest of the pack. While some riders had spent a total of six hours on the road, Smit and others in the elite category maintained a fast pace, making the race look easy.Many supporters gathered around hanging over the barriers, screaming and shouting for their team members and some just generally for everyone. Well done to every rider, whether small, big, able bodied, disabled, young or old. The vibe was great, attracting people from all walks of life to enjoy a cycle-filled day or to just a family day out.

Mapaseka Makhanya has been around the athletics scene for some time, but 2013 has been a stellar year for her, culminating in her victory in the SPAR Grand Prix. She was nominated for SA Sports Star of the Year, the only female among males but lost out to Itumeleng Khune. However she won the Sportswoman of the Year ahead of Lee-Anne Pace and Mandisa Williams.Makhanya took up road running this year because she wanted to build up her stamina and get used to running longer distances. Although she has never made a secret of her preference for running on the track, she took to road running like a duck to water, and as a result, the bubbly single mother also known as Mapasexy gathered enough Grand Prix points to finish the year well on top of the Grand Prix ladder. She started the year by finishing second in the Cape Town SPAR Women’s Challenge race and third in Port Elizabeth. She took victory in Durban, and had a record-breaking victory in Pretoria. By this stage, she had built up enough points to make it virtually impossible for anyone to overtake her, and although she finished out of the top ten in the final race in Johannesburg in October,

the Bonitas (formerly Transnet) runner had done enough to ensure that the keys to the first prize of a new Nissan Micra would be handed over to her.“This has been a great year. I won the Grand Prix and I ran and won my first marathon. Next year I plan on winning another car, and have asked for a leather interior,” Makhanya said. Three-times Grand Prix winner, René Kalmer finished second on the log, with 92 points, 13 behind Makhanya. Kalmer’s sister Christine was third with 77. René will receive R30 000 and Christine will pocket R17 500.Their Nedbank Gauteng Central teammate Irvette van Zyl, who was unable to run in Johannesburg because of a knee injury, came fourth, with 68 points. The two-times Grand Prix winner will receive R15 000.With five of the top 10 on the SPAR Grand Prix ladder wearing the Nedbank Central Gauteng colours, the club easily won the club competition with 343 points – nearly double those of their nearest rivals, Boxer KZN, who had 177. Transnet was third, with 138 points.

Springboks impress at Murrayfield

The Springboks showed class against the Scots as they battled head to head in the end of year tour in Murrayfield over the weekend.South Africa’s forward dominance once again came to the fore as they hammered the Scots in the tight phases.

The starting front row of Guthro Steenkamp, Adriaan Strauss and Frans Malherbe were solid with veteran Bakkies Botha and Flip van der Merwe as pillars of strength in the lock position. The loose forward trio of Francious Louw, Duane Vermeulen and Willem Alberts, was uncompromising at the tackle situation as Alberts showcased some huge hits making it very difficult for Scotland to get any momentum. This coupled with an almost flawless display by Pat Lambie, in the unfamiliar role of flyhalf, kept the Springboks on the front foot. South Africa’s backline defence was impeccable, led by world class defence organiser Jacques Fourie who ensured that any front ball that Scotland got had them driven back by a very enthusiastic South African backline. This coupled with the man of the match Willie Le Roux’s performance, South Africa was unstoppable. South Africa is set to take on France on 23 November in Paris. Judging from Sunday’s performance the French should be in for a very hard contest, as the Springboks will hope to come home undefeated in the end of year European tour.
