There were by-elections in four wards in the City of Jo-hannesburg on 2 July. Ward 57, which includes La Ro-chelle, Regents Park &Ext, Moffatview, Rose Acre, South Hills, Elandspark, Tulisa Park, Linmeyer, City Deep and Heri-otdale, was retained by the Demo-cratic Alliance (DA), and their can-didate Faeeza ‘Fay’ Chame is the new councillor.Chame went up against former Clr Bev Turk, who left the DA earlier this year and joined the African National Congress (ANC), and Lwazi Jali from the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP). The DA won with 66.09% of the votes; the ANC received 33.61% and the IFP, 0.31% of the votes.“I am overwhelmed, but very excited and relieved. There is a lot of hard work that lies ahead for me,” Chame told tame TIMES.Out of the 17 624 registered voters in ward 57, only 3 913 votes were cast, with 12 of them counted as spoilt votes. The DA received 2 578 of the votes cast.South Hills is a big concern for Chame,

due to the drug and alcohol abuse in the area. “Children are not going to school and people are stealing to sup-port their drug habit. There is a need for change here and I believe I can make a difference,” Chame said.Her vision for the ward includes youth upliftment, in which she wants to in-volve business; she also wants more SAPS members patrolling in the area and feels that the elderly residents of the ward are forgotten and neglected. “Their rent is too high. How are they supposed to live on their R1 350 pen-sion?”Chame explained that she is there to serve the community and hopes they can speak with one voice. “We (the DA) are very transparent and look past colour and race, and I ask the community to work alongside me so we can make ward 57 a better com-munity to live in.”

Faeeza Chame, also known as Fay, has been staying in the south for the last 15 years. The past five years she has been in Kenilworth, but for ten years before that she stayed in South Hills. As a result, the South Hills community is very close to her heart. “I know these people,” she said.Chame was introduced to the DA in 2002 by former Clr Bev Turk and became Turk’s right-hand woman. She was also made chairperson of ward 124 by PR Clr Tyrell Meyers three years ago. “This is when I really discovered what the DA is about. Meyers showed me all the dilapidated buildings that people were staying in and I saw there was a need for change,” Chame told tame TIMES.Chame is married and is family orientated. Her children, however, are grown up and, because of this, she can focus fully on her duties as ward councillor.

Who is Fay Chame?

I would like to thank the residents of ward 57 who took their time to vote for me in the local by-elections on 2 July.In my 10 years as a DA activist I came in contact with different kinds of people, and I was involved in various charity organisations, and in that time I was elected as the

chairperson for ward 124, and was chosen as the acting chairperson for the Democratic Alliance Women’s Network. One project in particular was Nomsa’s soup kitchen. What I experienced here and during my time has just pushed me to do more to help those in need. There was one building in particular situated in the heart of Joburg CBD, Moth building. The people that live there really touched me; these are families that go many nights without food, not knowing what tomorrow will bring. Their living conditions are those of the poorest of the poor. In experiencing all this hardship what I saw just made me more determined to make a difference in my community. I would say to you today that how my view of politics has changed I now know we need to focus on

the personal issues that people have and the value of acting to improve

our lives and those of our neighbours. It is one of the reasons that my focus is on the youth of this community. I want to bring back values because we should respect our senior citizens and make ward 57 a better place to live for all of us. My priorities will be to ensure that commercial development happens in a sensible way so that our heritage and culture is respected.The results are a clear warning to the government that they need to have a serious re-think not just nationally, but with local policies as well. As the newly elected councillor I will accept the responsibility whole-heartedly and I pledge that I am here to listen, to act and to serve the people of my local community. I will do so as part of a team that is focused on planning and delivering essential services. .to meet the needs of our growing community.I would like to encourage more of you to get involved. find out my dear friend Ndu Ngwenya’s girlfriend had lost her two-year-old son. As he told me the news and I saw the tears run down his face, my heart broke for him. There is a Casting Crowns song with the words “break my heart for what breaks Yours”. In this moment, I honest-ly felt this was happening. The despair and hurt in his eyes was so real that I felt it through my mind, body and soul.It is always hard to understand that God’s plan (taking a young boy from his loved ones so early) is one that brings hope how-ever we need to know and believe that it is. God would not harm us; there is a greater picture. “For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you hope and a future.” Jer 29:11.I pray that the family is open to God being their comfort, allowing their hearts to be peaceful knowing that their little one, Kamz, is rejoicing in heaven with Jesus. For me anyone up in heaven with Jesus is some-thing to rejoice about.Another shock this week was the news of Daryl Impey testing positive for Probenecid. From what I understand this is used to mask the use of doping drugs. I do not want to believe this as knowing Daryl on a personal level from my younger days, he would not do this. He would not take such a risk to mess up what he has worked so hard for. He is living his dream and now his dream has come to a complete halt.I am in agreement with many other people that have welcomed and applauded his honesty in releasing a personal statement on Tuesday. In takes a great deal of cour-age to let your fans and the world know that there is evidence of suspected doping against you, knowing that it is going to offset mixed emotions that will in turn hurt him, his team and his family.I do not know how this situation is going to play out, but I pray there is some logical ex-planation and that Daryl’s dignity and hon-our can be restored. I just think of how his heart is breaking in this time and my heart breaks with his.Be strong Daryl. I still believe in you.

A man in his 20s sustained critical injuries while 15 other taxi commuters sustained minor to moderate injuries on 3 July on the N12 highway near Kliprivier. ER24 paramedics rushed through the early morning traffic and arrived on the scene to find a wrecked taxi lying on its roof in the middle of the road. The occupants of the taxi who were scattered on scene were assessed and one was found to have sustained critical injuries. He was airlifted by the ER24 helicopter to Chris Hani

Baragwaneth Hospital for urgent medical treatment. The remainder of the patients were treated for their injuries and were transported to various hospitals in the area for further observation. Witnesses on scene said that one of the taxi’s tyres had apparently burst, causing the taxi to lose control and overturn multiple times. Local authorities were on scene to investigate further.

Over voltages that cause major damage to electrical appliances seem to be becoming a trend in Johannesburg South. Reports, however, of the vandalisation of sub-stations being the reason for this have not been confirmed. A resident in Yarmouth Road, Mul-barton took a photograph of the power reading on 28 June at 21:52 with a reading of 406 vac.The resident stated, “It started at about 18:30. The lights started flick-ing, brightening and lowering again. Due to this happening before with us suffering loss, we unplugged the electrical appliances. We smelt an electrical smell and before we could switch the mains off on the DB, it blew our power supply box to our alarm system to pieces.”The residents then contacted their neighbours and alerted them to switch off their main switches. They attempted to switch the mains back on at 20:00 but were unsuccessful. They phoned City Power but after holding on for 20 minutes there was no answer and they spent the rest of the night in darkness.“The next day our gate was not working, as well as the power supply to the alarm sys-

tem as well as computer speakers and more. This situation is unacceptable. The Glenan-da resident was fortunate that some of her damages where covered as in my policy it stipulates ‘no cover.’ “

It takes a great deal of courage and determination to go to Hollywood and attempt to break into the industry, but this is exactly what Letticia Bissondut has done. It is now nearly two years down the line and the actress’s show reel is growing.The ex-Glenvista resident booked her first job, a national commercial for Dominos, at her second audition. “I got to work with an incredible director Wayne McClamy and it was a really amazing experience for a first job in LA,” Bissondut said.She was also cast in a short film-The truth about quiet Canyon Lane which was showcased at the LA 48-hour film festival and will be sent to other festivals. The short film is a thriller and tells the story of a reporter who uncovers gruesome secrets about a small town. She recently finished a photo shoot for Toast Masters International’s catalogues that are distributed around the world.The 29-year-old lives in West Hollywood, “I

live right by Runyon Canyon so I get to hike often. It’s an incredible view of LA, especially when we do sunrise hikes; you get to see the sun rise over a slumbering City of Angels.”She explained that her daily routine is never the same. The regular daily activities are an x-tend barre class or hike, working on her project The Dreamers, meetings, auditions and being on set.Bissondut has a goal of creating her own projects as well as starting her own production company. “My last project, I completed a few days ago was for Tatia Pilieva, the incredible director whose short The First Kiss, won a ton of awards at Cannes. I’m so excited about the opportunity,” she said.The young creative has done various kinds of volunteer work which she explained has become the most fulfilling thing for her. “I recently worked with SoCal Hearts, an organisation that provides summer camps for kids in foster care. It was honestly one of the greatest experiences I have ever had. I also volunteer with Generosity Water, an incredible humanitarian organisation that is dedicated to ending the clean water crisis in developing countries, one community at a time.”

Over 200 signatures have been collected from concerned Mulbarton residents requesting that traffic calming measures be implemented on True North Road. Mario Stelli of Jawitz South said, “Traffic is especially heavy at peak hours as the stretch of True North (between Saron/South and The Broads) services three nursery schools (Genesis and two Cuddle Inn schools); three schools (Glenvista High, Harvest Christian and Mulbarton Primary) as well as the Mulbarton Hospital, Mulbarton Shopping Centre and the illegal taxi rank. Residents believe that some form of traffic calming feature needs to be implemented here as a matter of urgency.”According to Stelli, drivers entering True North have to take tremendous risks; the greatest concern, however, is that young children have to cross True North on their way to school. Councillor Paul Smit has agreed to assist

Mulbarton residents by submitting the petition to the Johannesburg Roads Agency and to ensure that action is taken to implement safety measures.

Did last week’s forceful ejection of EFF MPLs from the Gauteng Provincial Legis-lature undermine the dignity of our pro-vincial law-making institution? Why did the Honourable Members refuse to obey Speaker Ntombi Mekgwe’s instruction to change out of their red hard hats, overalls and domestic worker’s uniforms? Did the EFF discredit themselves or the ANC? After all, the best loved and most respected leader of our democracy, President Mandela, pioneered the fashion statement that was the Madiba shirt. With it, he always wore com-fortable shoes and avoided jackets and ties. The Speaker of the UK Parliament tradition-ally sat on a woolsack to remind MPs of one of the main industries which kept the country going. It seems that even the Gauteng Speaker her-self did not object as much to the working at-tire of EFF MPLs last week, as to the “Asijiki” inscription on the backs of them which she interpreted as a party political slogan belong-ing to the Economic Freedom Fighters. “Asi-jiki” is, of course, the EFF’s equivalent of the ANC’s “Amandla!” Used since the expulsion of the Honourable Malema from the ANC, it symbolises the determination of EFF mem-bers to continue going forward, that is, not to return to the ANC. The Secretary to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature Peter Skosana issued a state-ment condemning the “unbecoming conduct

of EFF Members” which caused “delays in the House sitting.” In it he referred to a Ruling of the House stipulating that all Honourable Members should, when executing their du-ties, “be dressed in a manner which accords with the decorum of the House and which does not display party affiliation.”The EFF, according to the statement, had been thoroughly informed about this issue – even workshopped. It appears that they then deliberately overstepped the mark in order to force a confrontation. According to their statement, “The EFF will never be bossed around to abandon the worker overalls in parliaments across the country because this is who it represents.” They point out, quite rightly however, that “What the speaker for-gets is that EFF is there not because she employed it, but because more than a million South Africans voted for it.” What is definitely most un-Parliamentary and very disrespectful, though, is their descrip-tion of the speaker as “a walking anarchy that is now undoing freedom of expression right in the house of democratic law making,” and the quite unnecessary and extremely de-rogatory comment that “The ANC demoted her to speaker precisely because she has no other political credentials to be used mean-ingfully elsewhere.”The EFF is making headlines and making politics popular, but is it maintaining respect for the democratic institutions that represent the rule of law in our country? The aim is to collect a minimum of 20 tons of pet food from 14-20 July, in order to break the prevailing record of 15 tons convincingly.“Animal shelters across the country look after scores of loveable pets in need of a good, nutritious meal while they await adoption. Regarding recent articles about the way our suburbs are deteriorating the follow-ing are a few observations of what I have observed driving around the South: Down Nascrec Road in the vicinity of the show grounds and FNB Stadium some of the areas which are frequently used for dumping have been barricaded off so that cars cannot gain access to dump. Booysens corner seems to be looking more respectable and Kliprivier Road (the gateway to the South) is also all right until one reaches the Council flats. This area looks dreadful, with broken-down walls,

graffiti and piles of rubbish all over the place and garbage spilling out of the skips. Would it not be possible for our Councillors to try to organise some extra skips or maybe to obtain a few additional bins from Pikitup and place them next to the skips to accommodate the overflow? My view is that the preferred stance of detachment from the ways of those who came before is not really a reflection of a non-caring generation, but rather an active protest against the inconsistencies which result from living a progressive life void of any of the anchoring characteristics of tradition when things are going well, and the sudden retreating to the “old way” when life’s tides turns. You cannot impose tradition on youth, encourage pioneering and forward thinking and expect anything less than generational friction.With recent experiences I have come to understand where Mark Twain was coming from when he said “The less there is to justify a traditional custom, the harder it is to get rid of it.”Often the things we call tradition just make it all right to avoid the process of thinking. Why, you ask? Well, life in itself is progressive and tradition is nothing else but a way of doing things. So if life and the things of life keep progressing, how do we remain grounded in the old ways and expect perfect synergy between different times?The inability to draw a clear logical line between an idea and the way in which one should execute it can be a source of many frustrations between generations; I think these frustrations are actually the telling signs of a needed paradigm shift. What if “should” were “could?” What if the way things were done yesterday only served as a guide as opposed to a circumstantial prison?Whether in business, relationships or any other aspect of our lives, we need to accept that yesterday’s solutions may not be suitable for solving today’s problems adequately. We need to accept that the search for a state of correspondence between the two (today’s problems and today’s solutions) is not necessarily a malicious rejection of old ways – it is a response in line with the nature of life, which is progressive. Mondeor SAPS arrested two 23-year-old men in Columbine Avenue on 26 June for possession of suspected stolen property.When Sgt Mphahlana and Cst Mnisi stopped a suspicious-looking white bakkie going down Columbine Street, the three occupants sitting in the back of the bakkie jumped out and ran away. The two officers then arrested

the driver and the remaining passenger. After finding the bakkie loaded with electri-cal appliances, they investigated the matter further and determined that the property had been stolen in Colworth Street, Mondeor the very same day.The suspects were detained at Mondeor Po-lice Station.

The Star reported last Thursday that a dog was set alight by National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) members in the Booysens area. However, when tame TIMES contacted W/O Lorraine Van Emmerick, Booysen SAPS spokes-woman, the following morning, she said no case had been opened and they had not been called out to assist.The Star stated that “protesters clad in NUMSA red vandalised several factories in the Booysens area of Johannesburg, as

well as vehicles parked around them. They were armed with knobkierries, tree branches, sticks and hammers. The protesters tried to set alight a building, but the owners quickly put out the fire. However, a dog was engulfed by the flames and burnt to death.”The Numsa strike started on 1 July, with over 200,000 Numsa affiliated workers demand-ing a 12 percent wage hike across the board, a R1 000 housing allowance increase and the scrapping of labour brokers.

Tracking system assists in arrestsEkurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) Intervention Unit members received a lookout alert for a Toyota Dyna truck that was stolen in Bedfordview on 18 June. Later that same day the unit was able to arrest two suspects, and to confiscate the truck and an accomplice vehicle in Eikenhof.The tracking system fitted on the truck was what enabled the officers to make a speedy arrest because they were able to co-ordinate the search with the tracker company. The stolen truck’s trail was followed from Kliprivier Road, Alberton and through Kibler Park and eventually cornered on R554 in Eikenhof.

The male suspect found driving the truck was arrested and he informed the Metro Police that his accomplice was escorting him in a white Kia sedan. The accomplice was then pursued and arrested as he attempted to get away. Implements used for breaking open motor vehicles were found in the Kia sedan. A docket of possession of a stolen motor vehicle was registered at Mondeor police station against the fifty-something pair. Both confiscated vehicles were booked in at Aeroton SAPS pound.The duo appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.

Three people were injured on the morning of 4 July when a taxi collided with a truck and light motor vehicle at the Columbine Avenue and Golden Highway intersec-tion.When ER24 paramedics arrived on scene, they found a man in his thirties in a critical condition, trapped inside a large truck which lay on its side.Jaws-of-life equipment had to be used to free the patient from the truck before advanced life support could be performed. Once freed

from the vehicle, he was treated and then transported to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hos-pital for urgent medical treatment.The driver of the light motor vehicle and taxi both sustained moderate injuries in the colli-sion. Paramedics treated them for their inju-ries and then transported them to a nearby hospital for further observation.The cause of the collision is not yet known, but local authorities were on the scene to make further investigations.

The Johannesburg Metro Police Depart-ment (JMPD) has warned pedestrians not to cross highways, but their warning has fallen on deaf ears as 30 men were recent-ly fined R200 each for crossing highways on foot. “It is illegal and dangerous to run across a highway. The Metro has a huge problem with pedestrians, especially on the M1 motorway between the Crown Mines and the Booys-ens off-ramp,” JMPD Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.The JMPD did a raid on the M1, M2, the N12 and the N1 highways.

GDE shines at UN Public Service AwardsThe Gauteng Department of Education recently won the “Improving the Delivery of Public Service Category Award” at the United Nations Public Service Awards for distinguishing itself in outstanding public service delivery. The Department received the award at an award ceremony held at Seoul, Republic of Korea, at the end of June.The UN Public Service Awards are aimed at recognising excellence in public service internationally. They reward the creative achievements and contributions of public service institutions that lead to more effective and responsive public administrations in countries worldwide. The Department won the award through its special intervention project called the Secondary School Improvement Programme (SSIP). SSIP is a flagship programme launched by the Department as an intervention programme to improve the quality of education in schools and to see improved levels of achievement, particularly in underperforming schools in Gauteng. Now in its fifth year of implementation, the SSIP has become an important element in improving the quality of education in Gauteng schools. By providing support to educators and school managers to ensure

better curriculum delivery during the school week, as well as supplementary tuition on weekends and during school holidays, SSIP has helped 435 priority schools to achieve the provincial benchmarks.The award recognised the Gauteng Department of Education and its Secondary School Improvement Programme, as being among the best examples of excellence in public service, not just in Africa but also internationally. Receiving this award on behalf of the Department was the newly appointed Gauteng MEC for Education, Mr Panyaza Lesufi, former Education MEC, Ms Barbara Creecy and Head of Department, Mr Boy Ngobeni.

Tiana de Oliveira, a Grade 11 pupil at Marist Brothers Linmeyer finished second overall in the final of the prestigious NEA (National Eisteddfod Academy) competition which was held at Atterbury Theatre recently.From the first rounds the elimination process began and de Oliveira had an amazing time performing Metallica’s Enter Sandman on drums. She performed her way through to the quarter and semi-finals at the Pro Musica The-atre in Roodepoort. Adjudicators and audienc-es alike were hugely impressed with all the 21 talented contestants who made it to the final.De Oliveira wishes to thank her dedicated drumming teacher and mentor Graca Texeira for all her support backstage and throughout the entire competition.

In the Soccer World Cup quarter-final games played last weekend, Brazil, Germany, Netherlands and Argentina emerged victorious.Brazil, however, will unfortunately compete in the semi-finals without their star player, Neymar da Silva Santos Junior, who was badly injured during his team’s quarter-final match against Colombia when Colombian player Juan Zuniga made a dangerous tackle from behind and kneed Neymar in the back. The impact damaged Neymar’s third vertebra. As a result, he is out of the World Cup and Brazil will have to play Germany without him.

Even though the Lions are sitting 13th on the Vodacom Super Rugby log and have one final match of the season against the Cheetahs left, they have had their best season yet, winning a total of six matches. Last Friday the Lions roared their way to victory, beating the Rebels 34- 17 on home ground.The tone was set two minutes into the game when winger Anthony Volmink scored a try, showing the Lions were hungry for victory. Then flanker Warwick Tecklenburg scored another try, proving the Lions’ persistent attack was working and winning the Man of the Match award for his efforts. Towards the end of the game, Captain Warren Whiteley had the final say, scoring a third try for the Lions. Flyhalf Marnitz Boshoff added to their winning performance by displaying great kicking skills. The last time the Lions had such a productive season was in the 2007 Super 14, when they won five games out of thirteen and finished 12th on the log. Lions coach Johan Ackerman, however, was not completely satisfied, saying, “To achieve this is good, but in the context of the competition it is probably not good enough. You don’t want to lie 13th on the log; you want to be up there and be involved in the playoffs so there is still a lot of room for improvement.”

Lions supporters, on the other hand, are ecstatic about their team’s performance. “I am just glad they won the game,” a Lions supporter told tame TIMES. For a young group, the Lions have played well, especially considering the level at which they have been competing. Ackerman himself said that at the start of the season nobody thought they would win a match, but the team has proved their critics wrong. Let us hope the Lions can beat the Cheetahs and make it seven wins for the season.

Cyclist Daryl Impey released a personal statement last week Tuesday after his exclusion from the ORICA Green Edge Tour de France team as a result of receiving a positive test result for Probenecid.Impey stated, “Further to the announcement of the Tour de France team and in the interests of full disclosure, I confirm that on 23 June 2014, I was notified by William Newman, the President of Cycling South Africa, about an adverse analytical finding for Probenecid following an in-competition test at the national time trial championships on 6 February 2014.”“I had no knowledge of Probenecid nor have I ever taken the substance knowingly in any manner. I am committed to drug-free sport and fully

intend to take all steps necessary to clear myself of any suspicion.”“The notification came as a complete shock to me just days before the start of the Tour de France, particularly since anti-doping tests conducted on me on 8 and 9 February 2014 yielded no adverse results.”“I immediately flew back to South Africa and was present at the analysis of my B sample on 27 June 2014, the results of which confirmed the initial analysis.”“I am extremely distressed by the finding, as I have always raced clean throughout my career. Every result that I have achieved to date has been as a result of hard work and dedication on my part.”“I notified my team immediately after being informed by Cycling South Africa of the adverse finding.

I would like to thank them, my family and friends for their support during this difficult time. I remain confident that I will be vindicated and proved innocent of any wrongdoing.”The Australian team has shown support to Impey stating, “The team would like to underline that it respects Daryl Impey’s right to prove his full innocence and will not comment any further until the process has run its due course and final conclusions have been made.
