Community expresses sadness after Eco Estate tragedy

The construction accident that occurred at the Meyersdal Eco Estate on 18 August was one of the worst tragedies to happen in recent times in Alberton. Seven workers lost their lives and numerous workers were left injured. It is alleged that the collapsed structure in the Meyersdal Eco Estate did not have the proper official approval. According to Themba Gadebe, EMM spokesperson, the accident took place while illegal building operations were being undertaken at the back of the property. According to reports, two pillars were

removed, which caused a concrete slab to collapse on top of the workers. However, the facts of the matter are still being investigated by SAPS and the Department of Labour. Construction company Romicon has released a statement in which they expressed their devastation at the tragic accident. “We express our sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased, and to our staff who are mourning the loss of their colleagues,” Romicon said. “We are contributing to the funeral costs of the deceased, and previous clients of ours in Meyersdal Estate have set up a trust fund to assist the families of the deceased and the injured in the months to come,” they continued.

A memorial service for the deceased families will be arranged in the next couple of weeks by the Ekurhuleni Municipality. Sean Romburgh, one of the owners of Romicon, said that they will not be able to provide any further comment on the tragedy, as investigations are underway. Meyersdal Eco Estate, along with Jurgens Bekker Attorneys, set up a trust for the families of the deceased, the fund details can be viewed on the tame TIMES website. “We continue to give our full co-operation to the various emergency services involved in the rescue operation. Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected and their families,” they said.President Jacob Zuma has extended his

condolences to the families of the workers involved in the tragic accident. He further appealed to builders and project managers across the country to apply the necessary protection measures, as well as to comply with building and safety regulations, to prevent such incidents in the future. One of the injured workers told the media that he heard a loud noise, felt concrete falling on him and saw dust everywhere. He tried to call out to the other workers, but after some time could not hear their screams anymore. “When I regained consciousness, I was in hospital,” he said. An ER24 paramedic said that the sight was overwhelming. “In my mind it was like an image out of a movie, I thought it can’t be real,” he said.

On 21 August Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality hosted the Alberton/Thokoza Mayoral Imbizo at Brackenpark Hall. MMC for Public Safety, Clr Siboza, welcomed the community and the meeting was opened in prayer. The purpose of the Imbizo was to report on service delivery progress, to further identify community challenges, to communicate municipal programs and to promote participatory democracy. Service delivery challenges that were noted included constant sewer blockages, frequent power outages, damage of EMM pavements by private contractors, dilapidated buildings and residents doing construction without building plans. The Department of Energy faces the most challenges and Ekurhuleni has an action plan in place with regard to the challenges. In the 2014/2015 refurbishment plan

they have allocated R1 million to the refurbishment of overhead lines to underground cables feeding Thokoza Ext 2 and R5 million to the refurbishment of underground feeder cables feeding Florentia, Alberante, Southcrest, Raceview, Verwoerdpark, CBD, New Redruth and Alberton North. R1 million has also been allocated for the refurbishment of overhead lines to underground cables feeding Alrode Industrial Area. Illegal dumping is another major challenge faced by the EMM. The Department of Waste Management responded by saying that they are busy with a master plan to provide Alberton residents with legal dumping sites. A consultant has been appointed and this will be actioned within this financial year. The EMM have listed all the achievements and challenges in the various departments and a full list can be viewed on our website and on www.ekurhuleni.gov.za.

Reaching out to schools in Alberton

Mrs United Nations SA finalist Desiree Oliphant visited Bracken Primary on 13 August as part of her #Switch campaign. School principal Mrs Anne Burger organised the learners into two groups for the campaign: Grade 4s and 5s, and Grade 6s and 7s. AKESO wellness and mental clinic psychologist, Natasha, addressed the learners on the signs of depression and how to deal with their parents’ divorces.

Desiree explained to the learners that the aim of the campaign was to teach them to be “a better version” of themselves, regardless of any situation they were faced with in life. The same campaign was rolled out in different, age-appropriate versions at Bracken High and Bennie Boekwurm Schools.Desiree’s next project is to reach out to children living with cancer, and then she would like to help the SPCA.

Conditions ripefor fuel priCe relief Substantial drops in fuel prices are on the cards. This is according to the Automobile Association, which was commenting on the unaudited fuel price data released by the Central Energy Fund on August 15. “International petroleum prices have continued to moderate since late July,” said the AA. “In addition, the Rand / US dollar exchange rate has remained within a narrow band and is showing signs of a slight strengthening in favour of the Rand. These two positive factors have resulted in a large over-recovery on petrol in particular,” the Association added. The over-recovery for petrol ranges between 59 and 65 cents per litre, while diesel and paraffin have seen more modest over-recoveries, at 15 cents and 12 cents per litre respectively. The AA said that if the exchange rate

remained stable or firmed while the two month-

long decline in international petroleum prices continued, South

Africans could be in line for one of the largest drops in the fuel price in recent times. “Conditions look ripe for motorists to receive some much-needed relief at the pumps come the end of August,” the AA concluded.

The air is warming up and we see new leaves on the trees. Soon the blossoms will appear, which means spring is in the air and that it is time to spring clean your house and to throw out old and unwanted items. We all have white elephants in our houses or clothing that we have not worn for the past year. Take all your unwanted items to CMR Alberton. They know plenty of needy families that you can help. CMR also has a “dress for less boutique,” where they sell the items you no longer need to unemployed women in the

community. These ladies have families to support and re-sell these items to do so. This in turn helps the CMR, as they can then help new families that they have not helped before. Contact CMR Alberton - they could assist you by collecting the items from you, or you could take your items to the CMR offices at 18 Lenin Street, Raceview, Alberton.

Melaatse kolonies was ʼn onwelkome gemeenskap.

In Lukas is daar een man wat a.g.v.

I would like to express my grati-tude for the complimentary tickets that I received last week from tame TIMES. Thandi and Aphiwe Zwane had so much fun at the air show.

Figures Models showcaseOn Women’s Day, 9 August, Figures Models Alberton held one of their popular showcase graduation events at Brackenpark Hall. The theme for this special event was All Around The World, and junior and senior contestants accordingly chose countries or nationalities they wanted to represent. There were several local traditional outfits to be seen, as well as Indian cultural dress, belly dancers, Spanish matadors and dancing costumes. Argentina, Britain and France were also featured. The stage décor was composed of flags from every possible place, depicting the richness and diversity of our world. Tieghan Griffin-Coetzer and Nadine Nolte, two models from Alberton who attended the New York IMTA Convention recently, modelled the junior and senior dresses that will be worn at the prestigious Model of the Year event in November.

Living healthily is about lifestyle choices that involve all aspects of your life and may require a few changes, but now that NuLeaf Health Shop has opened in Glenanda, these changes can be made easily with natural products right on your doorstep.Daksha Kalyan, the owner of NuLeaf, has always had a passion for natural therapy due to her father’s influence. “I was the one at school who assisted my friends who were battling with acne by getting them natural remedies to clear it, and so this went on as I started working – I

was always the one helping others with natural remedies.”Kalyan’s knowledge and desire to help others led naturally to a career in the health industry, in which she now has 20 years of solid experience. This year she decided to turn over a new leaf of her own and start her own business, focusing on holistic healing. “The benefit of natural remedies is that they help your body to fight the bacteria instead of the medicine fighting it for you, and there are no side effects,” she told tame TIMES.The NuLeaf Health Shop, which

is situated at 102 Vorster Avenue, is filled with supplements, herbal tinctures, herbal teas, homeopathic products, vegetarian products and gluten-free foods, to name but a few of the items in stock. With the friendly assistance of Kalyan, this bright and welcoming shop will help you turn over a healthy new leaf this spring.

Don’t wait:it’s national will week

(15 to 19 September 2014)

Attorneys to draft wills

for free in National Wills

WeekAs has become tradition over the past few years, members of the public will be able to have a basic will drafted by an attorney free of charge during National Wills Week from 15 to 19 September. Attorneys throughout the country are participating in the National Wills Week project.‘By ensuring that you have a valid will, you as the testator, can protect the interests of your loved ones and ensure that there is no delay in settling your estate after your death. It also ensures that your executor will act according to your wishes as set out in your will. A valid will allows you to state who should inherit your assets and property, to appoint an executor of your choice for your estate and also a guardian for your minor children,’ say Law Society of South Africa (LSSA) Co-Chairpersons, Ettienne Barnard and Max Boqwana.Persons who have been recently divorced or widowed, or those who have been cohabitating with their partners for some time, should also consider having a will drafted. If you have been cohabitating with your partner, it is advisable to have a will to ensure that there are not competing claims on your estate. Similarly, unmarried persons – particularly those who may have a number of people that depend on them financially – should ensure they have a will, as several people could make a claim on their estates.During Wills Week from 15 to 19 September 2014, attorneys participating in the National Wills Week initiative will display posters with their contact details so that members of the public can make appointments with attorneys in their area. In addition, the contact details of all participating attorneys can be accessed on the LSSA website at www.LSSA.org.za or by contacting the relevant provincial law society. Why should an attorney draft your will?A practising attorney has the necessary knowledge and expertise to ensure that your will is valid by complying with all the legal requirements in the Wills Act and also to ensure that it complies with your wishes. An attorney can also advise you on any problem which may arise with your will and assist your executor. Often a will is not valid because the person who drafts it does not have the necessary legal knowledge to ensure that all the legal requirements of the Wills Act are met. These include the fact that the will must be in writing, it must be signed by the testator in the presence of at least two competent witnesses, and also be signed by the witnesses.

What could happen to your estate if you die without a valid will?

If you die without leaving a valid will, your assets will be distributed according to the provisions of the Intestate Succession Act. These provisions are generally fair and ensure that your possessions are transferred to your spouse and children, and where applicable, to siblings, parents, and if required, then to the extended family in terms of degrees of relationships.

But, the following problems may arise if you die without leaving a will:

Your assets may not be left to the person of your choice.

It can take a longer time to have an executor appointed. The executor may be somebody you may not have chosen yourself.

There could be extra and unnecessary costs.

There could be unhappiness and conflict among members of your family because there are no clear instructions on how to distribute your assets.

‘n 15 jaar lange tradisie leef steeds voort by Hoërskool Marais Viljoen. Elke jaar hou Me.

Me.

Van Zyl is backWatch out Phalula

After a break of nearly four months, the SPAR Women’s Grand Prix gets under way again over the next two weekends, with the Durban and Pretoria Challenge races in quick succession, and the race to the Grand Prix title is hotting up with the return to form of two-times Grand Prix winner, Irvette van Zyl.The Durban race was run from Kingsmead on Sunday August 24 and the Pretoria Challenge takes place on Saturday August 30 at Supersport Park in Centurion.Maxed Elite runner Diana-Lebo Phalula has a headstart after winning the Cape Town and Port Elizabeth races. Phalula has a massive 60 points on the leaderboard – 26 ahead of her nearest rival, Mapaseka Makhanya.Boxer’s Makhanya, who was last year’s Grand Prix winner, finished fifth in Cape Town and third in Port Elizabeth and has a total of 34 points. She is just two points ahead of three-times Grand Prix winner, Rene Kalmer of Modern Athlete. Two points behind her, with 30 points, is Nolene Conrad (Boxer).Nedbank’s Van Zyl gave notice on 9 August that she was once again a force to be reckoned with when she won the Totalsports Women’s race in 32.20 minutes – the third fastest 10km by a South African woman. Van Zyl’s time equalled that set up by 17-year-old Zola Budd in Bloemfontein in 1983.Van Zyl recently changed coaches and says the training programme devised by Lindsey Parry has brought her back to where she was before she was injured. “For the first time in 15 months, I’m running pain-free. Lindsey had me swimming and cycling during my rehab period, and this kept me fit. Now I’m faster than I was before my injury. It came as a bit of a surprise – I’ve been preparing for the Cape Town Marathon in September and didn’t think I had the speed for a time like that.”Phalula won the Port Elizabeth Challenge in 32.27, so there could be a great tussle for line honours in Durban between Phalula and Van Zyl, while Makhanya and Kalmer can be expected to give them a good run for their money in both races.

On Saturday 24 August, Alberton High School hosted the Beeld Trophy finals for medium schools. Two teams, the u/15s and the 1st team, represented Alberton High in the finals. Other schools that played on the day were Belvedere, Roodepoort, Bergvlam, Queens High and Kriel. The u/15 team was up against Queens High and wasted no time to put points on the board. Within the first few minutes they were awarded a penalty and took the lead 3-0. Queens, however, quickly picked up the pace and scored two tries, ending the first half 6 – 10 in Queen’s favour.During the second half the u/15 team from Alberton fought back with Donovan Anderson scoring a try and kickers Duane Coertzen and Julian Carr also showing off their kicking skills through penalties and a conversion.Unfortunately, Queens High took the win with a score of 16 – 29, but the boys from Alberton can be proud for making it to the finals.Alberton High’s 1st team faced the team from Belvedere, and what an exciting game it was. Belvedere opened the game with a try but Alberton soon followed with a penalty, with Alberton flyhalf Tristan Delport showing that hard work pays off. Phillip Haarhoff from Alberton High also scored Alberton’s first try, leading the half-time score to 10-15 in favour of Belvedere. The second half showed Alberton High’s determination to win when Mykel Reed scored the second try for Alberton. The team from Belvedere could not get through the Alberton defense line, resulting in Belvedere scoring no point during the second half. Shortly before the end whistle blew, Alberton’s Neville Haarhoff scored a final try leading to the final score of 22 – 15, with Alberton winning the Beeld Trophy for medium schools.Coaches Francois Nortje and Flip Cowley told tame TIMES that it is a great privilege to win the trophy, as it is the first year that the Beeld Trophy included medium schools as well as.“We thank the Lord God for the win, and I would also like to thank the team for the great game they played. We also thank the school and all the supporters for the great support,” Coach Francois said.
