Fourth Street in Houghton was packed on Friday morning 6 December, with South africans and foreigners alike paying respect and offering tributes to former president nelson Mandela.The former statesman(95) passed away on 5 December around 20:50 in his Houghton home. It was reported that he was surrounded by his family at the time of his passing.tame TIMES went to Fourth Street to capture history in the making on Friday. Monica Supra, Alberton editor said she really felt proud to be a part of it and that it was a beautiful experience. “We all came together

to celebrate his life,” Supra said.The Presidency declared this past Sunday, 8 December a national day of prayer and reflection. President Jacob Zuma called upon all South Africans to gather in halls, churches, mosques, temples, synagogues and in their homes for prayer services and meditation, reflecting on the life of Madiba and his contribution to our country and the world.The main activities of the national week of mourning are as follows: The official memorial service will be held on 10 December at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.

From 11 to 13 December, the remains of our beloved Madiba will lie at the seat of government, the Union Buildings in Pretoria, where he served as the first President of this young democracy. During these days, official memorial services will also be held in all provinces and regions. Details of the memorial services will be published on www.mandela.gov.za.An official state funeral will be held and former president Nelson Mandela will be buried at Qunu in the Eastern Cape on 15 December.Jacob Zuma thanked all South Africans for

Maternal and child health encompass increased life expectancy at birth, reduced child mortality and decreased maternal mortality. In partnering with the Department of Health in making sure that the millennium development goals are achieved, Medscheme handed over a state of the art modern colour ultrasound machine to Natalspruit Hospital.André Meyer, Chief Executive Officer of Medscheme handed over the ultrasound machine to the deputy minister of health Dr Gwen Ramokgopa at the Natalspruit Hospital hall. The clinical specialist doctors demonstrated to delegates and the representatives of the community how the machine works.André Meyer said Medscheme was approached by the National Department of Health to consider donating an ultrasound machine to the Natalspruit Hospital and they responded immediately. “We made this move because we recognise the importance of the private sector partnering with public sector in order to

create sustainable quality healthcare services for all South Africans. Maternal and child health are not only priorities in South Africa, but for the world at large. This has resulted in Medscheme believing that the procurement of an ultrasound machine for the Natalspruit Hospital would make a fundamental difference to child and maternal mortality,” said Meyer.Dr Gwen Ramokgopa said, “We are very excited that Medscheme responded to our plea and we appreciate the donations. We have managed to make a difference and the hospital has three ultrasound machines as part of improving their health systems. We have also increased the number of clinical specialists in the regional hospital.”Nomasonto Masango, a Natalspruit Hospital board member, acknowledged the support and donation from Medscheme on behalf of the community members of Kathorus, who use the facility often.This investment reflects Medscheme’s support for government’s 10-point plan to transform the country’s healthcare system by improving access to affordable healthcare and health outcomes in South Africa.

This is the time that most people have been waiting for, to take a break from work and to spend time with family, relatives and friends. For those who will are travelling during the festive season, please drive safely. Refrain from drinking and driving, over speeding and negligent driving. Drivers should service their cars and check whether they are roadworthy before travelling long distances. Numerous road carnages are reported during the festive season as a result of drinking and driving and general negligence. On the long distance trips, drivers should have enough rest before travelling and they should rest along the way. Fatigue can lead to weakened concentration that could consequently lead to accidents. The festive season brings excitement as many interesting activities will be happening, including get-togethers such as parties, weddings and anniversaries. Students are also on holiday and they should make sure that they take care of themselves by refraining from alcohol and drugs. They should not forget that the schools are re-opening again

next year. The youth should enjoy t h e m s e l v e s r e s p o n s i b l y and not forget that they have their future ahead of them. Lastly, criminal activities are on the rise during this time of the year as most criminals are targeting stokvels, bonuses and household goods. Those who will be travelling, it is advisable to ask your neighbours to check your house in your absence, or to leave a family member in charge of the house. It is also a wise idea to tighten security at your house. We also close this year with the sad news of the passing of former president Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, Tata Madiba: 18 July 1918 – 5 December 2013. Discrimination is the thing of the past; everyone has access to same public transport despite race. We don’t have words to express our appreciation. Mandela belongs to all South Africans and we have lost a hero and we are now looking at the future without answers.”

As the world mourns the death of the first democratic president of the republic of South Africa, former president Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, tame TIMES had an interview with different representatives around Kathorus to find out what they have learned from his life and how he inspired them.

Sergeant Sibongile Mambane from Vosloorus Police Station said, “I have learned from his humility and that he always placed education first. Mandela had respect for all human beings and he brought all the races together with no intentions of revenge. He was a father of the nation and during the 27 years he was in prison his children were deprived of a father. May his soul rest in peace and may he be remembered for his humanitarian heart.”

Robert Pienaar, councillor for ward 58 (Thokoza, Palm Ridge and Phola Park and Eden Park sections) said, “Mandela made it a point that we as African people got our dignity back. He was in prison for 27 years and came back a happy man and became the first democratic president of the country. I have learnt from his leadership to treat every human being equally and with dignity. My deepest sincere condolences to the country, the ANC and his family.”

Captain Mega Ndobe, communications officer of Katlehong police station said, “I was under the municipality police but Mandela’s release from prison resulted in me being allowed to train and join the South Africa Police Services. I really appreciate what he did for me and the nation as a whole. In his lifetime the country qualified for hosting the 2010 world cup. l won’t forget the good things that l have learned during his life time.”

Papi Papi, Katle-hong local AIDS Council deputy chairperson said, “It is through him that we had a dem-ocratic govern-ment that resulted in people having access to medica-tion and being able to speak openly of their HIV/AIDS sta-tus. My heart and soul goes out to his family who have lost a great icon.”

John Dlamini, the chair-man of Vosloorus and Boksburg district taxi as-sociation said, “We ad-mire the work that Man-dela has done for our country. We have learned that we should not discriminate and not to take revenge when wronged. As a taxi asso-ciation, we are taking this direction of negotiating and compromising in order to resolve conflicts. We have also learnt that what is im-portant is what you want to achieve, not how you start.”

De Bruyn Primary School’s management and teachers recently hosted a Merit Award Ceremony at their school main hall in Katlehong’s Moshoeshoe section. The event’s objective was to honour and motivate high performing learners from their school in all their respective grades. Speaking to the audience members who had attended the event, the school head girl Selloane Ntlapho said they applauded the

great work done by their educators during their time attending school. “As learners we are promising that we will forever cherish and appreciate the great education we received from this school. We will take that with us when we embark on our education journey in high school early next year,” said Ntlapho. She reminded fellow students that education is a legacy that shouldn’t be taken for granted, because it is something that cannot not be taken away from them.

Academically performing De Bruyn Primary School learners were awarded certificates and trophies.

Foundation for Integrated Entrepreneur Leadership Development (FIELD) is offering entrepreneurship skills, which encompass training in small business and management skills, to the community of Kathorus. Mangaliso Buthelezi, general manager of FIELD said they offer a three month full time entrepreneur programme that is funded by Liberty Life. “We focus on entrepreneurial leadership skills, personal development, marketing, information on starting and

sustaining businesses. We make sure that all the theoretical skills learnt in class are implemented practically and accountably to benefit the community,” said Buthelezi. He said the programme includes a five year mentorship contract. They will be visiting the students in their business areas to make sure that they are implementing what they have learnt from the FIELD training. He said they will be assisting them to develop their businesses in accordance with their needs. The programme fee costs R18 500. Every person who enrols pays R1850 and the remaining amount is paid by Liberty Life. The students receive R1000 after completion of the programme. “The reason why we ask them to pay R1000 that will be refunded to them on completion of the programme is that we want to avoid drop outs. If a student drops out they don’t get back their R1000. We are teaching them that in business there is no quitting and that quitters never succeed,” said Buthelezi.Sipho Mthombeni, one of the FIELD students residing in Kathorus said he has learnt a lot about business and he intends to open his own. “I intend to start a toilet paper manufacturing business. I will manufacture

and sell them because toilet paper is a necessity and everybody needs it. They are also environmentally friendly. I have acquired knowledge on how to start a small business and on marketing strategies.”The FIELD programme has 10 modules and students are supposed to have a complete business and action plan for them to graduate and be awarded with certificates. The centre is based at the Katlehong Local Business Service Centre at Unit F, Thokoza.

Grace Zwane, a 19-year-old young lady, wishes to see young women holding to moral values, respecting themselves and knowing their worth. She is a first year student studying a degree in law and is also working part time. She advises young women to value themselves and know their worth. She adds that a man should have some sense of decency when approaching a woman. Ladies should not be accessible to every man or behave in a way that presents them as having loose morals and being an easy target for men. She also urges women to encourage and uplift each other and not to undermine and pull each other down.Zwane has already started working on her dream, which is starting a youth programme that focuses on discovering and developing young talent in the townships. She intends to nurture talents in arts and culture, such as singing, dancing, drawing and moulding. In this youth programme, Zwane also hopes to have a forum were the

youth meet, share and discuss various topics and issues in their daily lives to inspire, advise and groom each other. “I want this project to be a long term initiative, not a once off activity,” said Zwane.When asked if she is facing any challenges in

seeing her dream becoming a reality, Zwane said the one obstacle in her way is how to approach sponsors and convince them to fund the programme. However, she was quick to point out that the solution is to do some research and inquire how other youth programmes got established, the challenges they faced and how they got through them.

For the 4-Bird Roast you’ll need:

• 1 x 4-Bird Roast; approximately 2,3 kg • Salt and white pepper to taste• 2 tsp. cumin; toasted and ground• 1 tsp. coriander; toasted and ground• 2 tbsp. oil

For the sauce you’ll need:• 1 tbsp. vegetable or olive oil• 2 tbsp. fresh ginger; chopped• 1 clove garlic; chopped• 200 g gooseberry jam• ½ cup sweet chilli sauce• 1 tbsp. fresh rosemary needles• 1 tbsp. white balsamic vinegar• 1 tbsp. orange zest• ½ tsp. sesame oil

Pre-heat the oven to 180 ºC. Rub the meat well with the oil, mix the seasoning and rub it into the meat. Place in the pre-heated oven and cook until golden brown for about 25 min. Turn over and cook for another 25 min. Wrap the meat in foil and cook in the foil for another 25 min. For the sauce, heat 1 tbsp. of oil in a saucepan, add the ginger and garlic. Cook stirring for 30 sec. Add the gooseberry jam, sweet chilli sauce, rosemary, balsamic vinegar, orange zest and sesame oil. Cook gently for 12 min. or until it starts to look glossy. Remove the roast from the oven and remove the foil. Cover the roast with half

the sauce and cook for a further 20 min. at 200 – 220 ºC until light golden brown. Don’t exceed the total cooking time of 40 min. per 1 kg. Remove from the oven and serve with the remaining sweet gooseberry and chilli sauce.

The former junior flyweight champ Jacob “Baby Jake” Matlala died at the age of 51 at the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital in Johannesburg after a long struggle with an illness. The news was confirmed by a family member, who added that the former boxing champ had been in out of hospital for the past few months.The 1,47 metre tall light-flyweight champion retired with a professional record of 53-13-2,

including 27 wins inside the distance. Matlala was a former WBO flyweight, WBO junior flyweight, IBA junior flyweight and WBU junior flyweight champion. The talented Baby Jake has won the SA junior flyweight title twice during his spectacular boxing career.Speaking to tame TIMES, the family spokesperson Pastor Alan McCauley from Rhema Church confirmed that the talented boxer will be buried on 13 December. “The funeral service will be held at Rhema Church in Randburg at 10:00. The champ will be buried at West Park Cemetery,” said McCauley. He said members of the public should feel free to attend the funeral service. McCauley said the Matlala family welcomes the support they have been receiving from the public. He said it shows that Baby Jake was truly loved by his fellow South Africans. In 2002, Bay Jake appeared in the boxing ring for the final time at Carnival City in Brakpan. He fought against Juan Herrera and took a seventh-round stoppage win. Baby Jake dedicated his last victory to the late former president Nelson Mandela and presented the former statesman with his WBU belt. Pastor McCauley said, “Both Madiba and Baby Jake are now in heaven probably talking about boxing.”

Ready to make an impact in Comrades Marathon

The first Comrades Marathon took place on 24 May 1921, starting outside the City Hall in Pietermaritzburg with 34 runners. Little did the inaugural event organiser Vic Clapham, a World War I veteran, know that his idea will become one of the world’s best marathons.

The Comrades Marathon is one of the few races where novice runners compete against the world’s best and greatest runners, in a bid to write a new chapter in the event’s calendar. This is what inspires the Katlehong-based athlete Johannes Hlaka (31) to attempt to change his fortunes by attempting to win the 2014 marathon. Speaking to tame TIMES, Hlaka said he has taken part in numerous running competitions, including 10, 21, 32, 42, 50 and 87.9km marathons. He especially enjoys competing in the 87.9km Comrade’s Marathon. “That is why I will be competing in the Comrades Marathon for the third time. On my debut and second Comrades races, I obtained Bill Rowan medals because I finished the race between 7½ and 9 hours,” said Hlaka. He is optimistic to compete and surpass his two previous records in the next Comrades Marathon, to be held on 1 June. It is an 89.9km race that stretches from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. However, the athlete is concerned that the race will be taxing because it will be a downhill. His previous time in the same marathon was 08:09 in an uphill race. “I’m appealing to good Samaritans to organise me a sponsor or a coach to guide me during the preparation stage of the competition. I’m a dedicated athlete who has ambition to succeed.
