How are pensioners supposed to keep up with the seemingly never ending rate increases in this City? Many of us pensioners are homeowners and are still expected to pay the same rates as everyone else in our community.I have personally applied for a rate reduction at our regional office on more than one occasion and have yet to receive a reply from them even after I was given a reference number.

EDITOR’S RESPONSE: Dear Concerned Glenvista Citizen, according to City of Johannesburg Finance MMC, Geoffrey Makhubo in the City’s recent Budget Speech, the City will provide relief to residents in excess of R1-billion annually which, among other things, will include a 100% rebate for pensioners who own a house worth R2-million or less. See page three for more on the CoJ Budget Speech.

THANK YOU GCPF

Letter by Concerned Glenvista Citizen

I would like to respond to the Glenanda Resident who wrote a letter to tame TIMES, dated Tuesday 10 May, regarding the postmaster who used to work at the Glenvista Post Office. He currently works on his own in the tiny post office at Comaro View Shopping Centre in Bassonia.

EDITOR’S RESPONSE:

Dear Local Resident, thank you for letting others know where this hardworking and much appreciated postmaster went to.A story is in order on this valued member of the local community.Keep a look out for an article in a future issue.

Letter by Local Resident

Thanks to all the wonderful people of the Glenvista Community Policing Forum for assisting with my mother’s car accident at the corner of Glen Road and Vorster Avenue on Wednesday 25 May.Without you directing and controlling the passing cars, the situation would have been a mess with traffic expected to have backed up all the way to Kliprivier Drive. You are all great.Solomon; who got my mom out of her car by breaking the windscreen; all I can say is you are our hero. Thanks to the paramedics for your kindness at the scene and at the hospital – you are an absolute asset to your profession. Thanks to the Union Hospital as well for its care.

Most of all to my mom, Heather Carson, we love you so much and by the grace of God you were spared to share more memories with us. Hospital is the best place to be right now so you can recover. You are our lives and thank you for being an amazing wife to Des, our mom and our children’s nana. From Pamela, Ursula, Darryl, Donavan, Bronwyn, Nadyne, Shane, Duran, Sheldon, Dean, Wesley, Donne, Gareth, Bernice, Alta, Andzej, Tyler and Paygen.

EDITOR’S RESPONSE: Thank you to the heroes of our community for making our suburbs safer. We take our hats off to you.

Ward 54 Councillor Sergio Isa dos Santos was robbed at gunpoint around 10:30am in Newtown while attending the City of Johannes-burg Budget Speech on Tuesday 24 May.Councillor dos Santos was making his way to the Budget Speech; which was held at The Forum Company’s Turbine Hall; when he was mugged while in his vehicle at the corner of Jeppe and Ntemi Piliso Street in Newtown.“I was waiting behind other vehicles to enter the underground parking when two men approached my vehicle and de- manded that they wanted my phone. Be- fore I could even react the one man pulled out a firearm and pointed it at me,” explains Councillor dos Santos.“They then took my phone, told me to close my window and quickly walked away. They were so quick and I was unable to react. Un- for tunately, these types of incidences are a daily occurrence in the Johan-nesburg CBD but thank God that nothing else hap-pened,” adds Council-lor dos Santos.Councillor dos Santos opened up a case docket at Mondeor SAPS which was trans-ferred to Johannes-burg Central SAPS. “I recently received my case number. Both stations were very helpful and efficient,” says Councillor dos Santos.

City of Johannesburg Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Finance, Geoffrey Makhubo tabled the City’s budget on Tuesday 24 May in Newtown. During his address,

Makhubo

announced that property rates tariff increases would rise by 5.9% which is within the South African Reserve Bank’s inflation target. Among some of the key aspects of the City’s revised Property Rates Policy includes rebates offered by the City which will provide relief to residents in excess of R1-billion.

The budget exceeding the R40-billion mark is made up of R36,3-billion operational expenditure and R7,5-billion capital spend.

In another unprecedented step, Makhubo announced that Johannesburg had become the first municipality in

the country to present a multi-year budget of about R30,1-billion to Council for approval.

The self-funding part of the budget will, also for the first time, grow from an average of about 39% to above 65%.Makhubo said, “What is important to note is that we are able to achieve this despite the challenging global and regional economic

environment. In the current financial year, our finances continued to strengthen, bolstered by sound financial

strategies and forward thinking by the City.”Makhubo announced that instead of the proposed 7.61% increase which is in line with the National Energy Regulator, the average tariff for the City is at 6.93%.He further stated, “This is a stepped tariff and the less

electricity residents use, the less they pay.”

In closing, Makhubo said that residents can trust the City to

deliver on its mandate.

The damaged sound wall in North Street, Townsview has finally been repaired by the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), reports Ward 56 Councillor Dennis Jane.Townsview residents raised their concerns regarding the damaged wall to the JRA last year. In 2015, the sound wall accrued damage several times, the most recent of which caused a hole to appear in the wall that allowed people to climb through, notes Councillor Jane.Councillor Jane further wishes to inform residents in the ward that the JRA will soon be embarking on sections of road resurfacing.“The three roads that have been chosen due to the poor surface condition are sections of Garden Street in Rosettenville, North Road on the Townsview / Oakdene border and a stretch of Soutpansberg Road in Oakdene,” highlights Councillor Jane.“These resurfacing activities should be concluded before the end of June. These capital absorbing activities do not detract from the JRA’s routine maintenance of potholes and storm water problems,” he adds.

from Rosettenville Central Primary School also joined in the fun.Supplying tools for graffiti artists, the Caps and Cans story began in 2011. “Our aim is to inspire and enable the youth to find ways to express themselves as well as educate and inform the more mature generation about this developing form of art,” says Rösner, who also showed off her graffiti skills on the day.

Calvary Christian College recently held its much anticipated annual Entrepreneurship Day whereby students established their own businesses and sold products at their stalls. With good weather on their s i d e , the young

entrepreneurs arrived at school with loaded boxes and cooler bags. Excitement was

in the air as they prepared for the morning rush of parents, teachers and learners who came to support the stalls.“Once again

learners came up with wonderful

ideas for their stalls such as fruit and

marshmallows dipped into a chocolate fountain,

candy floss, homemade toffee apples, homemade muffins and cakes, fruit punch cold drinks, sweets, games and many more products,” says Calvary Christian College Business and Economic Management Services Department teacher Mrs C. Koekemoer.Very soon, the soccer field was filled with colourful stalls and the smell of meat on the braai wafted through the air.“We held a competition for

the best looking stall on the field. Grade 8 students Sharon Adelakun and Mercelline Mpofu won this challenge. They were dressed in proper chef tops and black slacks. They had hairnets on their heads and served food with gloves on,” explains Mrs Koekemoer.“They served a delicious plate of savoury rice, fried chicken and a fresh salad. They also had a huge popcorn machine, which made freshly popped corn all day,” she adds.“At the end of it all, the learners had experienced a lovely day. Our Entrepreneurship Day once again was a great success and enjoyed by all,” notes Mrs Koekemoer.

In celebration of Africa Day on Wednesday 25 May, the Miss Earth South Africa winners, ambassadors and Pikitup educational teams have been hard at work, educating students, planting trees and greening minds during the course of Africa Month.Their goal has been to plant 54 trees across communities in South Africa; representing the 54 countries that make up the African continent. The 54th tree was planted at Tsogo Sun’s 54 on Bath in Rosebank on Africa Day with the GM Catia Viegas and Hayley Moore, the Corporate Affairs Co-ordinator at Tsogo Sun Head Office. The support for this initiative grew and before the team knew it, 83 trees were planted by friends and family of the Miss Earth South Africa organisation. The last 15 trees were planted on Africa Day at Midrand Primary School and Ebomini Primary School, together with the Miss Earth South Africa applicants from the Pretoria and Johannesburg regions. The learners at the schools shared in a workshop on separation at source, recycling and the #WasteStopsWithME campaign, showing them that each person can make difference. Pikitup and Miss Earth South Africa visited two schools in Midrand on

Africa Day and were joined by the Pikitup Eco-Rangers who excited learners and teachers alike with their waste campaign assembly.“We chose to celebrate Africa Day at this school so as to share our African ethos with these learners. Each tree is symbolic of each one of the African countries that make up Africa. We have to stand together as Africans and share an equal love for our continent. We need to understand that we all form a part of our continent, and it is important for us to stand together,” says Catherine Constantinides, the Executive Director of Miss Earth South Africa.Africa Day was first celebrated when the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), the precursor to the African Union (AU), was formed in 1963. It acknowledges the progress that we, as Africans, have made, while reflecting upon the common challenges we face in a global environment. Africa Day presents an opportunity for South Africans to reconnect and recommit themselves in developing Africa. To further encourage and forge a common goal of fighting against colonial rule, the conference called for the observance of African Freedom Day once a year, to mark “the onward progress of the liberation

CELEBRATING AFRICA DAY THE GREEN WAY

• R e c y - cling helps to protect the environment because the recyclable waste materials would have been burned or would have ended up in a landfill.• Recycling reduces pollution of the air, land, water and soil.• Recycling aids to conserve natural resources, which are already being depleted – it creates a shift on the dependency on raw materials.• Recycling saves energy – it takes more energy to produce items with raw materials than from recycled used materials. This means we are more energy efficient and the prices of products can come down.• Recycling creates jobs because people are employed to collect, sort and work in recycling companies and with business units set up for waste management.

WHY RECYCLING MATTERS

movement, and to symbolise the determination of the People of Africa to free themselves from foreign domination and exploitation.” Consequently, 15 April was enacted and called African Freedom Day (or Africa Liberation Day), and this marked the beginning of what would later be known as Africa Day, today celebrated on 25 May.“We as Africans, as South Africans and as habitants of this Earth need to make sure we preserve and conserve our natural heritage, our home. It starts with one act a day, every recyclable that is given a second life, every drop of water saved and every kilogram of CO2 reduced is a step in the green direction. It begins with each of us.” says Educational Officer of Miss Earth South Africa, Ella Bella Constantinides. On Africa Day and on every day we all need to strive to make every day an Earth Day, believe the Constantinides sisters.

namastenamastenamastenamasteOn Friday 20 May, the Naras imha Chaturdasi festival was celebrated to pay homage to Lord Narasimha, the 4th incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This amazing temple event of Bhakti Marga at the Maha Jwala Narasimha Temple in Alan Manor demonstrated a fully vital and alive spiritual community.Wonderful Bhajans, sacred prayers accompanied by clapping and music rang out loud throughout the evening. Many devotees of the Lord that gathered to celebrate this auspicious day, including myself, were filled with joy in having the opportunity to glorify our beloved Jwala Narasimha-Dev. The Maha Jwala Narasimha Temple is dedicated to Lord Narasimha, one of the greatest incarnations of Lord Narayanaya. The exquisite décor, the overflowing

abundance of Prasad, the hundreds of little lights, the beautifully set up dinner

tables, the shop selling sacred artifacts all spoke of the dedication of devotees who had put in so much time, effort and love. Whether it was during the Guru Puja, the Abhishekam, sitting around the flames of the Yagna, participating in the prayers and

the chanting of Lord Narasimha’s mantra, or during Arti, I seemed

immersed in His love and protection. We also listened to a delightful narration

of the ancient Vedic scripture’s epic of Prahlad Maharaj who was always absorbed in meditating on Lord Vishnu and Shri Krishna. Because of Prahlad’s devoted spiritual life, his cruel father, a demon named Hiranyakashipu, considered his son an archenemy. Upon trying to kill Prahlad, the supreme Lord appeared as Lord Narasimha-Dev, saved Prahlad and killed Hiranyakashipu. Then Lord Narasimha-Dev asked Prahlad what boon he desired and Prahlad’s humble prayer was to liberate everyone, to which He agreed. An English translation of the Srimad Bhagavatam of the words Lord Narasimha-Dev reads: “Those who

hear or tell others of this will be easily liberated and will receive pure devotion for Me. How will this happen? They must first take shelter of a bona fide guru – this means accepting initiation and agreeing to live under his guidance according to his instructions. In this way living entities will be gradually liberated.”When the final curtain opened to reveal the garlanded and bejewelled Lord Narasimha-Dev, adorned in breathtaking lime, chilli and flower garlands, surrounded by myriads of flowers, I caught my breath at the glorious sight and humbly bowed.A feeling of immense gratitude to our Guru, Maha Mandaleshwar Sri Swami Vishwananda who had this Murti installed, swept over me. It is through His Grace that He helps me aspire to greater heights and through His pure love inspires me to sing God’s praises more and more.

Following the recent terror attacks in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, intolerance directed at the Muslim community is higher than ever. Some South Africans have adopted this terrible behaviour. A prime example is the recent uproar over the construction of a mosque in Valhalla, Pretoria which has spurred on political, racial and religious tensions. While social media has the potential to do great good, unfortunately it also often amplifies the vitriol and most divisive voices, making these ones heard loudest.Through social media some disturbed individuals spend their time relentlessly attempting to cast Islam and the Muslim community worldwide in a negative light.Digital agency NATIVE VML partnered with People Against Suffering Oppression and Poverty (PASSOP), a South African non-profit that advocates for equality, justice, and human rights for all, to start

a campaign that aims to address this situation. The initiative’s goal is to confront people’s prejudices and counter the rising tide of Islamophobia. Portraits of Muslim women wearing a traditional Islamic hijab, fashioned after the flag of their home country, created the powerful campaign imagery.“Juxtaposing these two symbols creates such a strong impact and challenges the assumptions people have about Muslim identity,” says Tendai Bhiza of PASSOP.The portraits were made of various Muslim women, and will be used in an outdoor, print and social media campaign. “We are fully aware that certain quarters may find these images controversial, but the point of this movement is to challenge the prejudices people may have, and change the way we think about a culture that has been unjustly defined by the actions of a select few,” says Ryan McManus, Executive Creative Director at NATIVE VML.NATIVE VML hopes that this campaign will inspire people in other countries to create similar images that will spread the message and help shift the conversation.McManus adds, “In this era of divisive rhetoric and rampant hate speech online, we need unifying images like these now more than ever.”Join the conversation with #IAmMuslim.

FUN AND

FLAVOURSOME

Listen up, Mediterranean cuisine and seasonal fare guru Doppio Zero has just launched its heartwarming Winter Menu – something you just have to try.Doppio Zero at Mall of the South recently hosted an elite bunch of bloggers, foodies and local media to a cosy tasting evening of its new gourmet winter offering on Thursday 19 May. Seated at a large roomy table in the heart of the restaurant, everyone snapped up a few food selfies before trying out all of the delicious dishes – social media first, guys.Doppio has taken some of our cherished classic meals and changed things up. For example, the crispy mac and cheese – deep fried served with napolitana or arrabiata topped with parmesan and rocket; or the bangers and mash – pan fried gnoc-chi in an onion tomato gravy with pork sausages and peas.My favourite is the slow roasted lamb ragù on a bed of creamy polenta, topped with salsa verde and freshly grated parmesan. This dish is like your mother’s cooking but only slightly better (don’t tell her).So if you’re looking for something to warm your tum-my and soul, get on down to Doppio Zero at Mall of the South for exceptional winter food.

WARM YOUR SOUL: 1. Prawn and chorizo paella 2. Lemon slice brûlée 3. Lamb ragù 4. Bangers and mash 5. Crispy mac and cheese

A group of staff members from Investec spoilt the aged at Reuven Senior Complex by donating blankets on Saturday 21 May.The heart warming donation became a reality thanks to the Cradle Project, an initiative run by a committee of In-vestec staff that volunteer to raise funds, make donations, and assist charities and causes that are lesser known or supported. One of the members of the Cradle Committee, Terry-Anne Mohamed, who assisted with the distribution of the blan-kets to the elderly of Reuven, said that the committee was established a few years ago, primarily to raise funds for the needy and the destitute. On behalf of the Reuven Committee and the residents of Reuven Senior Complex, Reuven Senior Complex Social Group Chairperson, Caroline Ngoasheng expressed her thanks and appreciation to the Investec Staff Cradle Pro-ject Committee for their generosity, and wished them suc-cess in all their undertakings.

I trust this little article will put a smile on your face and joy in your heart as we remember the birthday anniversary of the great entertainer and comedian, Bob Hope who came into this world on 29 May 1903.Having appeared in over 70 films and authored 14 books, Hope was praised for his comedy timing, funny one-liners, rapid-fire de-livery of jokes and his self-dep-recating sense of humour. The song Thanks for the Memory is widely regarded as his signa-ture tune. I had forgotten he had lived to the ripe old age of 100 and also didn’t real-ise it’s been over 13 years since his death on 27 July 2003.

I always enjoyed his jokes, his shows and the seven famous Road movies he made

with Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour. On his deathbed, they asked him

where he wanted to be buried. His answer was, “Surprise me!”Here we pay tribute to a man who lived a long life with a career spanning nearly 80 years, who loved the game

of golf and who made us laugh and really did make a difference.

For those of you too young to re-member him, ask your grandparents.

BOB HOPE – THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES

● On turning 70 – “I still chase women, but only downhill.”● On turning 80 – “That’s the time of your life when even your birthday suits needs pressing.”● On turning 90 – “You know you’re getting old when the candles cost more than the cake.”● On turning 100 – “I don’t feel old. In fact, I don’t feel anything until noon. Then it’s time for my nap.”● On giving up his early boxing career – “I ruined my hands in the ring. The referee kept stepping on them.”● On never winning an Oscar, despite being the host 19 times – “Welcome to the Academy Awards, or, as it’s called in my home, Passover.”● On golf – “Golf is my profession. Show business is just to pay the green fees.”● On presidents – “I have performed for 12 presidents, but entertained only six.”● On why he chose showbiz for his career – “When I was born, the doctor said to my mother, congratulations you have an eight pound ham.”

● On receiving the Congressional Gold Medal – “I feel very humble, but I think I have the strength of character to fight it.”● On his family’s early poverty – “Four of us slept in the one bed. When it got cold, mother would throw on another brother.”● On his early failures – “I would not have had anything to eat if it wasn’t for the stuff the audience threw at me.”● On his six brothers – “That’s how I learned to dance. Waiting for the bathroom.”● On going to heaven – “I’ve done benefits for all religions. I’d hate to blow the here after on a techni- cality.”

HERE ARE SOME OF THE MANY OBSERVATIONS AND QUIPS HE MADE DURING HIS LIFETIME:
