Over South Dakota Reveals State’s BeautySDPB1: Sunday, March 46:30pm (5:30 MT) & 8pm (7 MT)

We are so Over South Dakota! The wonders of South Dakota are on display in a new high-definition television documentary from SDPB.

Over South Dakota, an aerial tour, reveals our state’s beauty, majesty and splendor. The one-hour SDPB Television production premieres on SDPB1 on Sunday, March 4, at 6:30pm (5:30 MT), with an immediate encore at 8pm (7 MT).

The breathtaking high-definition production takes viewers on a birds-eye journey from the cities to the plains and mountains.

The production begins with poetic words

from Patrick Hicks, writer in residence at Augustana College in Sioux Falls; and ends with words from Badger Clark, the late cowboy poet who was the state’s first poet laureate. In between, the production soars over a dozen areas of the state, giving viewers a unique and powerful perspective of our home. Singer/songwriter Boyd Bristow narrates.

The incredible vistas were filmed during the summer of 2011 by SkyWorks, an internationally acclaimed production organization, in partnership with SDPB. The project is supported by the South Dakota Departments of Tourism and Game, Fish and Parks.

Kings of the Court Explores Boys BasketballSDPB1: Sunday, March 188pm (7 MT) & 9:30pm (8:30 MT)

Some of South Dakota’s most memorable boys basketball moments come to life in a new SDPB Television documentary Kings of the Court. The one-hour program premieres on SDPB1 on Sunday, March 18, at 8pm (7 MT) with an immediate encore at 9:30pm (8:30 MT).

The program celebrates a century of state championships in South Dakota Boys High School Basketball. Using photos and footage combined with contemporary interviews, the documentary tells the story of the cultural phenomenon that is the South Dakota State High School Boys Basketball Tournaments. The show includes accounts from players, families, sports reporters and coaches. It explores how the rules have developed, and

how the tournaments have changed over the years.

The SDPB Television documentary is based on research and a book by Dave Kemp and is narrated by Mike Henriksen, 2011 South Dakota Sports Broadcaster of the Year. The documentary is made with the support of the South Dakota High School Activities Association.

Digital Television Signals Progress

Cover photo courtesy Chad Coppess, SD Depatartment of Tourism.

My brother told me his son requested and received a high definition TV set for his birthday. He told his son: “Michael, you are very lucky to have this beautiful TV set for your room. When I was your age I had a 13” black and white TV and I had to change the channel with a pair of needle-nose pliers.”

“You didn’t even have a remote?” the incredulous 11-year-old asked.

How times have changed! When KUSD-TV first went on the air 50 years ago, our black and white programs reached a small portion of the South Dakota viewing audience. By the late 1960s, most of the programs we aired from PBS were in color (Oscar the Grouch was originally orange!). And in 1971, KUSD-TV received its first color camera – until then, all local productions were shot in black and white.

The most significant change in the past 15 years has been the introduction of digital TV. The first digital TV signals were being broadcast in the U.S. in 1998. About that same time, Congress mandated that all full-power TV stations would be required to cease analog transmission and broadcast solely in digital by 2009. SDPB transitioned to all-digital signals for our main transmitters in February 2009.

Digital TV, while requiring consumers to upgrade their home sets, has provided many new opportunities, and SDPB is taking advantage. Now offering 3 channels, SDPB continues to develop ways we can best serve our audience. This legislative session we have offered live and unedited coverage on SDPB2 of the South Dakota House and Senate direct from Pierre. This is in addition to expanded hours for children’s programs on SDPB3, plus more shows about arts, crafts, travel, history and public affairs.

This month you’ll see SDPB-TV use of all three channels to their fullest potential as, for the first time, we’ll offer complete coverage of every girls and boys high school tournament basketball game from all three venues simultaneously.

So put away your remote, or your needle-nose pliers, and enjoy all that SDPB-TV’s digital channels have to offer.

Tune in for Your Red Green TicketsSDPB1: Saturday, March 24, 8pm (7 MT)

“I’m a man, but I can change, if I have to, I guess.” The man prayer is a sign that Red Green is coming back to South Dakota. He’s bringing his Wit & Wisdom tour to the Corn Palace and you have a chance to get tickets by tuning in to SDPB Television.

Friends of SDPB will offer tickets to supporters during Red Green’s Duct Tape Forever on Saturday, March 24, at 8pm (7 MT). Red Green will be at the Corn Palace in Mitchell on Saturday, May 12. You can even opt for a meet and greet event with Red along with your tickets. It’s a great way to support great television and get a few laughs.

The Red Green Show, a longtime favorite series on SDPB Television, stars Steve Smith as Red Green, the leader of some very peculiar characters who live somewhere up north in the small community of Possum Lake. They celebrate their bonds as members of the Possum Lodge, create

dubious inventions, and run afoul of modern life. Red imparts such wisdom as “If the women don’t find you handsome, they should at least find you handy” or “You may have to grow old, but you don’t have to mature.”

The Red Green Show generally airs on SDPB1 Television at 10pm (9 MT) on Mondays and 9:30pm (8:30 MT) on Saturdays.

Festival rocks your television screen in March. Nostalgia, music, great advice and more are on the agenda March 3-25.

Three great new music specials are a blast from the past – Big Band Vocalists looks at the voices that found fame in the 1940s Big Band era (March 3, 11, 18 & 24). Superstars of Seventies Soul features artists who have had a lasting impact on the American music scene (March 7, 8, 14, 18, 19 & 20). Big ideas and the human condition are explored in a conversation you don’t want to miss in the eight-hour Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth with Bill Moyers. The two-part special features a series of thoughtful conversations that changed American thinking (Part 1: March 4 or 12; Part 2: March 18 or 19).

Motivational speaker Dr. Wayne Dyer is back with a new special looking at the five steps you need to take to have your Wishes

Fulfilled. The special airs several times over the month; check the listings. Horses of the West looks at their contribution to history as well as to the activities of today (March 4, 17 & 19).

Two spectacular new SDPB Television productions premiere this month – Over South Dakota and Kings of the Court (see page 3 for details). Plus there are special ticket offers with Antiques Roadshow and Red Green (see page 4) and Trans-Siberian Orchestra (March 12). Girls and Boys Basketball dominate March 8-10 and March 15-17 (see page 7).

Humanities Backs Stained Glass DocumentaryStained glass

windows are part of South Dakota’s heritage. Across South Dakota, churches, homes and public buildings display beautiful windows.

With the support of the South Dakota Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Council for the Humanities, SDPB Television will create a one-hour documentary about some of the state’s most memorable stained glass windows. The program will look at the history and culture of stained glass windows throughout South Dakota with the help of Humanities Scholar Dr. Barbara Johnson. The Aberdeen researcher will share history and stories in a colorful and fascinating documentary that will travel throughout the state to document examples of this incredible art.

History through Stained Glass is tentatively scheduled to air on SDPB Television late this year or early in 2013.

The support of the South Dakota Humanities Council makes it possible.

Program Funders support a variety of SDPB programs and projects. To become a Program Funder or to find out more about upcoming SDPB projects, contact Larry Rohrer at 800-456-0766.
