SDPB1 Thursday, July 10, 8pm (7 MT) Sunday, July 13, 1pm (Noon MT)

Saddle up! Young cowboys and cowgirls are gearing up up for the 2014 South Dakota High School Rodeo Finals. Highlights air on SDPB Television on Thursday, July 10, at 8pm (7 MT), and Sunday, July 13, at 1pm (Noon MT).

The program features two hours of excitement from the state competition held in Belle Fourche on June 18-22.

The SDPB Television production, with commentary from Dale Christensen and Terri Kissack,

will present the highlights from this year’s competition, including the top 16 in Bareback Riding, Saddle Bronc, Goat Tying, Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, Break Away Roping, Tie Down Roping, Team Roping, Bull Riding, Boys Cutting, and Girls Cutting. The program also includes interviews with saddle winners, queens, rookie cowgirl and cowboy, and all-around cowgirl and cowboy.

Each year, South Dakota’s best young cowboys and cowgirls show off their skills for a chance to compete in the national finals. The contestants are all under age 20.

To qualify they must have just successfully completed 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade in high school. Students qualify for the state finals by earning points at regional meets.

Tune in and lasso some fun. The program may be purchased at

Shop SDPB (click on “Shop” in the top menu at SDPB.org).

How does a world-class music festival end up in Western South Dakota? Blame Michael Hill.

The Chamber Music Festival of the Black Hills, founded by Rapid City native Hill, is filling the air with concerts and educational music events in five West River counties this month. The festival features musicians of the Orlando Chamber Soloists, a Florida-based ensemble of 12 musicians with professional backgrounds from both the U.S. and Europe.

“Being a native of the Hills, it’s always been a special place to me,” says Hill, bass ace and executive director of the group. He founded the festival in 2008 at the Historic Homestake Opera House in Lead. Today, it crosses five counties and lasts 26 days.

Many of the performances will be recorded and aired later this year on SDPB Radio.

“The setting is a perfect location for a summer classical music festival,” Hill says. “It’s also our opportunity to give back to the community that gave me so much.”

Hill grew up with the sound of music. His brothers influenced his participation in band and orchestra throughout school and he was a participant in South Dakota High School All-State music events. He went on to the Black Hills Symphony, where he is still a featured soloist from time to time, and he has performed and recorded across the U.S. and internationally. One of his most memorable was at Carnegie Hall with acclaimed violinist Isaac Stern.

The South Dakota festival offers a

mix of performance and educational opportunities with four distinct musical series, based in the Black Hills and the Pine Ridge Reservation.

Dawn Marie Edwards, Hill’s wife, has created the ensemble’s award-winning education program, including the very popular Teddy Bear Series for preschool and early-elementary aged children. It features “petting zoos” that give tots a chance to hear, touch and try out instruments, as well as programs that take a creative classical twist to popular icons. This year’s theme is The Gingerbread Man.

“The key to any successful educational program is based on participation,” Hill says.

The other elements of the group’s South Dakota residency are:

The Children’s Family Concert Series, for students of all ages. Under the 2014 theme of “Music of the Night Sky,” the series

offers performances of works by Mozart, Debussy, and several other composers, as well as a fanciful “Attack of the Rosin Eating Zombies from Outer Space” with audience participation.

Music in Our Community features high school students performing in area churches on Sunday mornings. Students will have the opportunity to perform with members from the Orlando Chamber Soloists in different ensembles.

The Classical Music Series features three concerts – “It Had to be You,” “Celtic Visions and Miracles,” and “Tropical Fiesta Nights.” The series is the only part of the summer residency

with a fee, but Hill points out that the cost ($5 to $18) is far less than you would expect for world-class performance.

One of the most creative aspects of the Orlando Chamber Soloists’ summer residency is the creation of the “virtual choir.” The first project took 15 months and featured more than 150 children, ages 2 to 18, from the Black Hills and Pine Ridge Reservation. Each voice and drum was recorded one at a time in places like libraries, churches and schools, then combined in “We Are South Dakota.” You can check out “We Are South Dakota” by going to www.orlandochambersoloists.org. More virtual choir creations are planned for the future.

Meanwhile, Hill has one piece of advice for musicians of all ages: “Never stop practicing.”

Of all the continents on Earth, none preserves more of its origins than Australia. NOVA’s miniseries Australia’s First 4 Billion Years goes from the birth of the Earth to the emergence of the world we know today. Geologist Richard Smith examines titanic dinosaurs and giant kangaroos, sea monsters and prehistoric crustaceans, disappearing mountains and deadly asteroids. A mainstay of “geek culture” for years, cosplay – a contraction of “Costume Play” – only recently emerged from the shadows of the sci-fi convention and into the mainstream. Cosplay involves participants dressing like characters from comic books, science fiction, video games, anime or other works of fiction. Cosplay! Crafting a Secret Identity ventures into the workshops and lives of people who elevate fantasy costuming to the professional level. SDPB1: Tuesday, July 29, 8pm (7 MT)

Weeks, a longtime resident of Vermillion, was a country lawyer for 52 years, during which time he served as city and state’s attorney. He was an accomplished outdoorsman and strong environmentalist, and a dedicated member of Friends of SDPB for nearly 40 years.

Chuck and Ginger Scalet of Lawrence, Kan., have made a donation in memory of Jonathan Jenks.

Kari Nolte of Castlewood has made memorial gifts in honor of several people. They are Rosie Rudebusch, Donald Logan, Laura Stokke, Alvin Krause and Verna Krause.

Daryl and Vonnie Cole of Fort Pierre have remembered three people with a memorial contribution: Norwin Walz of Aberdeen, Duane Osborn of Pierre, and Alice Miller of Pierre.

Friends of SDPB accepts memorial gifts, gifts that mark a special person or occasion and estate gifts. For details on special gifts, call the Friends of SDPB at 800-333-0789.

John T. Vucurevich Foundation Supports Science

Many thanks to the John T. Vucurevich Foundation for a generous gift making SDPB’s participation in Neutrino Day and the Lakota Nation Invitational possible.

SDPB will participate in the annual Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) science celebration in Lead with a radio program from nearly a mile underground on Friday, July 11, and amazing science demonstrations and a Science Café on July 12.

In addition, the grant supports keynote presentations by Cosmologist

Joel Primack and cultural philosopher Nancy Abrams, and Physicist Milind Dewan.

The John T. Vucurevich Foundation honors and builds on the personal legacy of giving of John T. Vucurevich by facilitating solutions to key challenges facing South Dakota and the Black Hills Region in the areas of arts, education, and health and human services. JTVF provides funding and human resources to make a greater impact on the community through a collaborative approach that creates a sense of shared responsibility among partners and promotes long-term sustainable change.

SDPB is thankful for the Foundation’s support of science initiatives in South Dakota.

Organizations and businesses interested in supporting SDPB productions and projects may call Ryan Howlett at 800-456-0556.

Joel Primack and Mary Abrams take a cosmic view for the keynote presentation.
