Dr. Timothy Heaton is 12,000 years or so behind the times and on the cutting edge at the same time. He spends a lot of his time in the last Ice Age and uses technological advances like DNA testing to understand it.

The University of South Dakota Paleontologist has been exploring caves in coastal Alaska for the past two decades. His most amazing discovery is the diversity of animal

life in an ice-age world that many believed to be cold and lifeless.

“Even during the coldest times, animals were flourishing,” he says. That means there were areas that were clear of ice as well as steady food sources. “It was a very habitable place. No one thought that before.”

His main goal is to determine how animals changed in and after the Ice

Age. To that end, he has spent a lot of time exploring caves. “They have a constant temperature and humidity, so bones can last tens of thousands of years with little degradation.” His team has found animal bones more than 40,000 years old.

He has made some interesting discoveries. For example, there are brown bear, caribou, fox, marmot, and other remains on islands where

Dr. Timothy Heaton, explored On Your Knees Cave, on the northern tip of Prince of Wales Island, several times. Bear bones dated to 41,600 years old and human remains dated 10,000 years back.

there are none today. He believes that might be due to climate change – a landscape once covered with ice and tundra gradually changed to forest. And, he wants to know how those animals who lived during the Ice Age fared, genetically speaking. Using DNA research, Heaton and his team compare old fossils to present-day animals to determine whether certain genetic lines continued – “how

they correspond to modern populations, or if they died out.”

His work is similar to the groundbreaking research examined in the PBS series First Peoples. The five-part series,

beginning June 24, uses a variety of research, including DNA, to look at the human record.

In fact, one of Heaton’s most important discoveries helped expand the human record for North America. He discovered human remains around 10,000 years old in a cave on Prince of Wales Island in Southeastern Alaska. At the time, the bones, found in 1996, were the oldest human remains ever found in Alaska.

“I was looking for animals from the Ice Age, and the human remains were a surprise,” he says. Genetic analysis of the remains indicated that, some 10,000 years ago, humans were more genetically diverse than previously thought.

Heaton believes that coastal areas free of ice were a conduit for human migration south from the land bridge that once connected Alaska to Asia during the Ice Age.

“Using a coastal route, they could travel quickly, all the way to South America,” he says. Even more telling, the lifestyle – coastal fishing and hunting – would remain essentially the same. “If they traveled south in the interior, they would constantly need to re-adapt to new kinds of ecosystems like tundra, grasslands, desert, and tropical forest.”

Although he has made an important contribution to the human record, the South Dakotan’s main focus is animals of the Ice Age. Heaton has no immediate plans to excavate more caves in Alaska, though a new discovery could lure him back.

That doesn’t mean he needs something to do. He is concentrating on studying and interpreting the animal bones he and his team have collected.

“One week of field research can lead to years of lab work and writing.”

He and his team have catalogued more than 50,000 bones, and they want to do DNA and radiocarbon testing on several hundred of them. That will take money (about $800 per specimen), and Heaton and his colleagues are hoping to get grant funding for extended research.

“That could answer a huge number of questions.”

Heaton traverses “Hamilton Log” on the trail between the beach camp and On Your Knees Cave. A handline was rigged across this log (which spans a creek) after geologist Tom Hamilton fell and broke a rib in 1997.

7,925-year-old deer remains found in Zina Cave in central Prince of Wales Island were studied by Heaton.

A brown bear skull found in Bumper Cave. Bear remains found there dated to 11,645 years old. Heaton excavated this cave on Prince of Wales Island in 1994.

NOVA explores World War II in D-Day’s Sunken Secrets. On June 6, 1944, the Allies launched an armada to invade the Normandy beaches and liberate Europe from the Nazis. Hundreds of ships sank while running the gauntlet of mines and bunkers, creating one of the world’s largest underwater archaeological sites. Now, NOVA has exclusive access to an extensive survey of the seabed bordering the beachheads.SDPB1: Wednesday, June 10, 8pm (7 MT)SDPB2: Thursday, June 11, 6 & 11pm (5 & 10 MT)

A daring WW II plot comes to fruition in NOVA Escape from Nazi Alcatraz. Colditz Castle, a notorious prisoner of war camp in Nazi Germany, was supposed to be escape-proof. But in World War II, a group of British officers dreamt up an escape plan: in a secret attic workshop, they constructed a two-man glider out of bed sheets and floorboards. But the war ended before they could put it to the test. Now a team of aero engineers and carpenters rebuilds the glider to see whether the plan would have worked. Dakota Life looks at summer pastimes in June with the Dakota Sky Piano Festival, a magician from Brookings, a vintage bowling alley in Tripp and an archeological dig in Peru.

The program, which features South Dakota’s interesting faces and places, premieres on SDPB1 Television on Thursday, June 11, at 8pm (7 MT) with an encore on Sunday, June 14, at 1pm (Noon MT).

Here are some of the details:Dakota Sky – The festival in Sioux

Falls annually features performances by some of the best up-and-coming pianists in the world.

Illusionist – A young Brookings child was inspired by a magic show to become an illusionist himself. Reza now entertains in Branson and tours throughout the United States.

Tradition on the Lanes – Bowl down memory lane in Tripp, where the Sport Bowl is much the same as it was in 1962.

Into the Field – South Dakota students travel to South America – Peru – for an archeological adventure.

Dakota Life airs several times during the month to give viewers a chance to tune in. Past episodes are available at SDPB.org/DakotaLife. The program airs statewide on SDPB and nationwide on RFD-TV.

American Experience travels to South Dakota’s Black Hills for Mount Rushmore. The story of Mount Rushmore’s creation is as bizarre and wonderful as the monument itself. It is the tale of a temperamental artist whose talent and determination propelled the project, even as his ego threatened to tear it apart. It is the story of a massive public works project in the midst of an economic depression. And it is the story of dozens of ordinary Americans who suddenly found themselves suspended high on a cliff face with drills and hammers as a sculptor they considered insane directed them.SDPB1: Tuesday, June 30, 7pm (6 MT)

SDPB Television puts history in the spotlight May 30-June 1 with special programming, including two riveting specials.

Last Days in Vietnam (SDPB1 June 1 & 7) looks as the chaos and amazing heroism that accompanied the evacuation of Hanoi 40 years ago. The Roosevelts: An Intimate History The Rising Road (1933-1939) explores the lives of one of America’s most accomplished families (SDPB1 June 1; SDPB3 June 6).

Food is on our minds with Joy Bauer’s Food Remedies (SDPB1 June 6) and America’s Home Cooking One Skillet (SDPB3 June 3).

Over the week, we’ll learn more about lifestyle choices with specials

on sewing, dieting, exercise and health. We’ll explore our world with a series of travel specials featuring top expert Rick Steves and the railways of Europe (SDPB3 June 4).

And music will ring out, too, including Sister Acts, looking at the siblings who serenaded us (SDPB1 June 3); and Moments to Remember, with a tribute to the stars of the 1950s and 1960s (SDPB1 June 3 & 6). Country Pop Legends (SDPB1 June 1, 3 & 7) takes us through three decades of memories.

Those are only a few of the fascinating specials coming your way. Check the listings for all the details. It’s all due to you and your support for your television network. Thank you.

Thank You for Your Memorial Gifts to Friends of SDPB

Friends of SDPB is raising dollars to help purchase a new high-definition mobile video production unit for SDPB Television, and we need your help.

So far, more than $570,000 of the estimated $733,000 cost is in hand. But we have more than $160,000 to go.

A mobile video production unit is used to produce the High School Achievement Series, with events like Football, Volleyball, Chorus & Orchestra, All-State Band, Gymnastics, Cheer, Dance, All-State Jazz Band, and Basketball Tournaments; Statehouse programs; and concert specials. Your donation will help SDPB deliver these programs to South Dakotans in high-definition format. The present vehicle has been on the road for more than 10 years and the standard-definition equipment is becoming obsolete.

To make a donation, contact Ryan Howlett at 800-456-0556 or email [email protected].

Be an MVP for SDPB Television’s MVP

How the mobile video production unit may be configured.

MemberCard Offers SDPB Supporters Discounts

Membership in Friends of SDPB can pay for itself! Everyone who donates $90 or more a year, or $7.50 or more a month, gets the SDPB MemberCard.

The card has enlisted businesses across the region to offer contributors discounts on things like meals or entertainment. SDPB’s MemberCard includes more than 80 dining discounts (usually two-for-one entrée offers); 40 performance and attractions discounts; seven lodging discounts; and deals from 39 online merchants.

When you make your contribution, the MemberCard arrives in the mail with instructions for use and a directory of participants and discounts. If you’re planning on traveling, there’s also an option to get cards for other areas of the country and an app that can make using the MemberCard even easier.

To join Friends of SDPB, renew your membership or increase your giving to get the MemberCard, call 800-333-0789 or go to SDPB.org/Donate.

With this edition of SDPB Magazine we bid farewell and happy retirement to SDPB Public Relations Manager and Grant Writer Ruth Bylander. An employee of SDPB for 17 years, Ruth has spent the last 9 as writer and editor of SDPB Magazine. Previously the Augustana College graduate had a robust career in the newspaper industry.

While at SDPB Ruth has worked in the Marketing and Development departments. She has been responsible for public relations, organizing activities, and played a vital role in our Radio pledge drives. Ruth has served as grant writer for SDPB and over the years has been responsible

for helping to secure millions of dollars in grants that helped pay for programs, equipment, and educational opportunities that have benefitted the citizens of the state of South Dakota. Please join us in wishing Ruth Bylander bon voyage!

Her legacy is one of which she can be proud.

Farewell & Thank You, Ruth Bylander!

Ruth Bylander.
