Greetings, This month we are excited to deliver the first edition of the newly

formatted, full-size, full-color “SDPB Magazine” to your door. At Friends of SDPB, we are constantly looking for ways to improve your

experience with South Dakota Public Broadcasting and provide more value for your membership. Friends and the SDPB network have done both with this new format.

The new design will allow us to bring you more content, while keeping

the features that you have come to enjoy and expect. We know there will be something for everyone to be excited about.

The full-size format allows us to do some new things. Primarily you will see an in-depth feature article each

month on pages 4-5. Sometimes this article will come from one of our award-winning reporters; sometimes it will be an in-depth look at or extension of programming that you’ll see or hear on-air. But we guarantee you, that each month it will be interesting and full of great insights. This month tells the backstory of what it takes to bring you the state boys and girls basketball tournaments. It is a fascinating behind the scenes look at one of SDPB’s most high profile and demanding projects.

You’ll also notice that we have dramatically improved the look of the magazine. Every page is now printed

in full color. This allows us to bring you more great photos, as well as capture what’s happening at SDPB. In a lot of ways “SDPB Magazine” is our version of the TV guide. You’ll notice the revamped TV listings

on pages 8-15. You’ll find these listings are much easier to read than the old grids. The expanded size of the magazine allowed us to take more space and make this more functional.

And there is much more to come, but these changes do come with costs. The new “SDPB Magazine” is

a benefit of your membership in the Friends of SDPB. We were able to accomplish this revamp due to your financial support. Thank you for joining with us, and if you would please take a moment, recommend joining the Friends of SDPB to your friends and loved ones. A subscription to SDPB Magazine is part of your $40 annual membership, and we would be happy to send a complimentary copy to someone you believe has an interest.

Finally, those of us at Friends would like to extend our congratulations to the “SDPB Magazine” editor,

Ruth Bylander, and her coworkers on the SDPB Marketing team, Fritz Miller and Carol Robertson. The tremendous end product represents a nearly a year’s worth of their work and planning efforts.

We hope that you will enjoy the new “SDPB Magazine.” If you have any feedback, please don’t hesitate to

call Ruth or me at (800) 456-0556 or e-mail [email protected]. Thank you again for your generous support – it matters in making SDPB the best network we can be.

Finding the Extraordinaryin Everyday Lives

Ira Glass has been hailed as the best radio host in America. Each week, on public radio, he takes a theme or a life or an event, and weaves it into a fascinating look into the way Americans live. It can be shocking

or heart-warming; inspirational or educational. Whether it profiles the experiences of everyday people or the famous, it proves one thing – all lives are extraordinary.

Glass is making a rare public appearance in South Dakota next month. He will give us a glimpse of how he crafts one of the most award-winning programs ever. He will recreate some of the sounds of the show for the audience by mixing live onstage stories with pre-taped quotes and music. In addition, the show will feature a “best of” segment from the series’ funniest moments. He will present for an hour and then take questions for 30 minutes.

“Reinventing Radio: An Evening with Ira Glass” premieres Saturday, April 5, at 7:30pm at the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls.

Glass and his staff view their radio show as an ongoing experiment. They’ll try all sorts of creative ideas – like a show distilled from 24 hours of taping in an all-night restaurant; or a band created from musicians’ classified ads; or stories to go with the Ten Commandments; or tales collected during a weekend at a highway rest stop.

Some programs are more involved. They once followed a group of swing voters for months, recording their reactions to everything that happened in the campaign, right up through their final decision. An award-winning series on the financial crisis and the housing meltdown brought clarity to those who couldn’t fathom how home mortgages almost destroyed the economy.

This American Life airs weekly on more than 500 stations to about 2.1 million listeners – in South Dakota on SDPB Radio on Saturdays at Noon (11 MT). This American Life also is one of the most popular podcasts in the country, with around 1 million people downloading each week.

To Get TicketsTickets are available for the April

5 performance in Sioux Falls.

Every department contributes – you see staff members in blue polo shirts announcing games, wearing headphones,

running cameras, taking photos, selling DVDs, troubleshooting equipment, and directing broadcasts. It’s not a simple task.

“The extent of our event coverage is unique to public broadcasting and SDPB,” says Fritz Miller, Director of Marketing. “The aim is to give students recognition for the effort they put into activities.”

One of our toughest challenges is covering the Girls and Boys basketball tournaments – 72 games over the course of two weeks played in six different venues in six different cities.

Here’s how we do it.“We start planning for the next school year as

soon as track finishes up in the spring,” according to Production Manager Bradley Van Osdel. “We have to know where to place trucks, what our engineering requirements will be, where to put cameras, dozens of little details.”

Each site provides unique challenges and opportunities. This year, we’ll head to Brookings,

We cheer for South Dakota. SDPB Television and SDPB Online cover some 30 high school achievement events every

school year. You’ve seen our broadcasts on television or checked the stats and photos online. What you don’t see is the massive effort behind the scenes.

Huron and Spearfish for the March 13-15 Girls tournaments; and Aberdeen, Sioux Falls and Rapid City for the March 20-22 Boys tournaments.

Marketing steps in weeks before the tournaments with promos and articles on when and where – which games are on which SDPB channel. TV Production develops hundreds of pages of graphics for on-screen broadcasts, and works with media coordinators at schools to find students to help run cameras – typically four per venue.

Travel is a huge part of the preparation process. Administrative assistants must arrange travel plans for staff from Television, Engineering, Online, Marketing and Radio; this includes booking hotel rooms and coordinating transportation.

“We typically reserve 28 to 30 rooms each week for crew members and announcers, which, depending on the city, is not always that easy, and we usually have two to three vehicles at each site,” says Production Assistant Kim Kelly.

We gather our equipment and pack it into one of the three mobile production facilities – SDPB’s production truck and two trailers. We prepare

dozens of boxes, pack our bags and hit the road.

The three production and engineering crews travel on Wednesday, the day before each tournament begins, and begin the set-up process. Placing cameras, running cable, entering team rosters and final graphic creation makes Wednesday a long day. Engineering oversees the installation and calibration of equipment with the help of the TV crew, and makes sure the signal can get to our main operation control center in Vermillion – where more production staff are on hand – for statewide broadcast.

Thursday through Saturday are broadcast days where the crew not only does the standard game coverage, but also uploads graphics for each day, trains all high school students who operate cameras, and coordinates with tournament directors to make sure TV time outs are done and half time awards and entertainment are covered.

During each activity, it’s “all hands on deck.” Each site has anywhere from five to a dozen TV and Engineering staff members at a time. The online department ensures that online streaming of events is running smoothly, as well as taking photos and updating the SDPB social media with scores, results, and highlights. Marketing is on hand at each game location to talk with fans and sell DVDs of the games.

“We don’t need to be front and center. Our goal is to put the spotlight on the high school students,” says Bob Bosse, Director of Television. “Watching events should be just as thrilling whether you’re at home or there in the arena.”

When Saturday night, March 22, comes and all the tournaments are complete, the crews will work late into the night to strike all of the equipment, load up the vehicles, and head home, usually the next morning.

Back in Vermillion, there’s unloading and maintenance and technicians are busy making DVDs. But there’s not much time to rest.

The next crew is gearing up for All-State Band March 27-29.

Unique Role Explored for Women’s History Month

Bottom Left: In many places across the globe, women are finding ways to counter oppression. Half the Sky, a two-part special on SDPB2, looks at the issues on March 17 and 24. Top: Frontline takes us to a place where justice is elusive for rape victims in Outlawed in Pakistan on March 12 on SDPB2. Above: Independent Lens follows the story of one of America’s best known superheroes – Wonder Woman – on March 5 on SDPB2. Below: The five-part Women, War and Peace looks at the role of women in conflicts around the globe on SDPB2 on March 10-14.

March is Women’s History Month. Tune into SDPB2 (World Channel) during the month for stories about amazing people and the role of women in wartime.

Half the Sky Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide is a landmark two-part, four-hour series based on the book by New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. It follows six actress-advocates including Diane Lane, America Ferrera, and Olivia Wilde as they travel to six countries and meet inspiring, courageous individuals who are confronting oppression and developing real, meaningful solutions through health care, education, and economic empowerment for women and girls.

Makers Women Who Make America is a three-hour special that looks at how women – in pursuit of their rights to a full and fair share of political power, economic opportunity and personal autonomy – have shaped our country over the past 50 years.

Women, War and Peace looks at war and peace through the eyes of women. The five-hour series is filmed in conflict zones in Afghanistan, Bosnia, Colombia, and Liberia. The

series reveals the majority of today’s conflicts are not fought by nations and their armies, but rather by gangs, insurgent groups, and warlords armed with small arms and improvised weapons. Women have become primary targets in these conflicts.

Here are some of the highlights for Women’s History Month.

It’s 1959 and the Swinging Sixties are about to begin as we travel to London for a third season of Call the Midwife. Eight episodes will take us to a time when the winds of change are sweeping through the country and the residents of Nonnatus House face some momentous changes of their own. Call the Midwife is based on the best-selling memoirs of the late Jennifer Worth, which tell colorful stories of midwifery and families in London’s East End. Book Club Presents Featured Author

Patrick Hicks

SDPB.org/BookClubPatrick Hicks, writer in residence

at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, will be featured in a special interview for members of SDPB Radio’s Dakota Midday Book Club on Monday, April 21, at Noon (11 MT). The featured book is “The Commandment of Lubizec.”

You can read the book ahead of time to prepare or even join the book club and get a copy. The book club is open to Friends of SDPB supporters who dontate $300 annually, or $25 per month. When you choose the book club as your thank you gift, you receive four books over the course of a year. You can even become an Evergreen Member, with automatic monthly donations, and your membership in the club will be automatically renewed. Go to SDPB.org/Donate or call 800-333-0789 to join.

The books generally focus on our region. About six weeks to two months after you receive a book,

Dakota Midday Host Karl Gehrke features the author on air, and listeners even have the option of calling in during the program with questions and comments.

The book club started late last year and the first featured author, Darcy Lipp-Acord, writer of “Circling Back Home: A Plainswoman’s Journey,” was interviewed in February. You can access the interview at SDPB.org/BookClub. Other regional authors coming up this year include Kathleen Norris, author of “Dakota”; and Kent Meyers.

The Gettysburg Address Lives Again

You’re invited to record your version of one of the most famous speeches of all time. President Abraham Lincoln delivered The Gettysburg Address on Nov. 19, 1963, at the site of one of the deadliest battles of the Civil War.

Your recitation can become part of the national website for The Address, a Ken Burns PBS project.

Here’s how it works. Go to SDPB.org/TheAddress. You’ll find a copy of The Gettysburg Address and directions for participating.

We asking people from across South Dakota to take part and the first 25 classrooms will get a book and a DVD of filmmaker Ken Burns’ program scheduled for April 15. Some of the top videos will be on air on SDPB Television.

In The Address, the Burns tells the story of a tiny school in Putney, Vermont, the Greenwood School, where each year the students are encouraged to memorize, practice and recite the Gettysburg Address.

SDPB’s project is supported by a grant from WETA. Funding for The Address is provided by Bank of America; the Anne Ray Charitable Trust; Public Broadcasting Service; and members of The Better Angels Society, including The Pfeil Foundation and Robert & Beverly Grappone. Funding was also provided by Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), as part of “American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen,” a public media initiative to help communities solve the national high school dropout crisis and keep more students on a successful path to college and career.

Fourth-graders from Arlington, S.D., are among the videos featured on the national website.

Human trafficking is getting a lot of media play in South Dakota right now. Learn more about the issue with SDPB Radio’s series “Sex Trafficking in South Dakota.”

The series, which aired in January, looks at the problem, the victims, the customers and the solutions.

SDPB Television has examined the issue, as well, on South Dakota

What Is News? Journalists See Changing WorldYou’re invited to join SDPB Radio

and the Journalism Department at Black Hills State University on Wednesday, March 26, for a noon forum asking the question, “What Is News” in 2014?

The free “brown bag” forum will be on the BHSU Campus.

Joe Tlustos, Director of Radio at

SDPB, will open with results from the latest Pew Research Center’s Annual State of the Media, along with other studies and stories of the media business. That will be followed by a panel discussion with representatives from SDPB as well as Black Hills area TV, radio, newspapers and online news and commentary sites.

They’ll talk about changes in their industry and the future of news reporting, as well as answer questions from the audience.

Admission is free. Bring your own brown bag lunch, or purchase lunch at the BHSU Union. Stay tuned to SDPB for more details.

Friends of SDPB Settles into New Address

Friends of SDPB staff have settled into new offices in Brookings at 815 Medary Ave. after nearly four decades on the fourth floor of Pugsley Center on the South Dakota State University campus.

Friends spent several months getting things ready to go and SDSU moved Friends across the street to the Foundation building in mid-December.

Gayle Grothe, Membership Manager, likes her new location on the garden level of the building, although it’s an adjustment after 36 years in Pugsley.

Janet Gerjets unpacks boxes in her new office.
