SDPB continues to observe two important milestones in our history – the 50th anniversary of SDPB TV (July 2011) and the 90th anniversary of SDPB Radio (May 2012).

This month, we look at the history of SDPB’s Legislative coverage as

Statehouse – An SDPB Tradition

On the cover: Photo by Chad Coppess, South Dakota Tourism

Cookie Monster on the floor of the SD House in 1993

we begin the 40th anniversary of Statehouse. The faces change, but one thing is constant – South

Dakota Public Broadcasting will be in Pierre to cover state government every year. This has been true since public television grew to network status in South Dakota in the early 1970’s.

In the earlier days, when equipment wasn’t as portable and interconnecting our facilities wasn’t as simple, our coverage consisted of live coverage of some of the legislature and of the governor’s major addresses. In 1972, the program Statehouse premiered on SDPB TV. Initially, it was a weekly program that wrapped up the weeks’ activities, but by 1977 it was presented nightly during the legislative session.

Similarly, SDPB Radio has traditionally sent a reporter to cover the activities of each Legislative Session. At first, a journalism student from SDSU, and later full-time staffers, would spend the first three months of the year in Pierre reporting on the session.

The development of the Internet has brought on our most sweeping changes. In concert with the Legislative Research Council, SDPB developed a website that allows interested parties to tune in to any committee session, general session, speech or public meeting. All of this content is archived on the site, as well.

SDPB’s coverage hasn’t been limited to each legislative session. With programs from the past like South Dakota Public Affairs, South Dakota Update, We the People, Candidates & Issues, Statehouse Cracker Barrel and Conference Call; and our present-day South Dakota Focus, SDPB has provided lessons in civics, and opportunities for our audience to speak directly to their representatives, to learn more about candidates for political office, and voice their opinions about important issues of statewide impact.

You may read more about our efforts for this legislative session on page 3. For more than 40 years, SDPB has presented comprehensive coverage of government and politics in South Dakota, and that coverage continues.

January 2012 3

24; March 2), SDPB2 will offer Statehouse Press Briefings, live broadcasts of the press briefings for Republicans, Democrats and Governor. The parties alternate between 9:30am and 10am (8:30 & 9 MT) start times, and the Governor begins at 11am (10 MT).

SDPB Online SDPB.org/statehouse offers live and

archived audio of governor’s speeches and all Legislative public committee meetings and floor sessions at SDPB.org. In addition, check SDPB.org for archives of related SDPB Television programs & SDPB Radio reports.

SDPB RadioCheck out live coverage of major

addresses and daily live reports from the Capitol on Dakota Midday at Noon (11 MT). News updates air throughout the day each day of the session as warranted, with special programs and reports as they happen.

SDPB’s Statehouse coverage is supported by The South Dakota Bar Foundation, SDN Communications, and Missouri River Energy Services.

SDPB’s annual Statehouse coverage offers the state’s most comprehensive look at the South Dakota Legislature. Tune into democracy. Tune into Statehouse.

SDPB1 TelevisionSDPB1 will offer two programs each

week of the session. On Tuesdays, beginning on Jan. 17, at

7pm (6 MT), Statehouse Live, a one-hour public affairs program, features experts and lawmakers in a lively discussion of activities in Pierre.

On Fridays, beginning Jan. 13, at 8pm (7 MT), Statehouse will offer a 30-minute recap of the week’s top decisions, issues and activities.

SDPB2 TelevisionStatehouse House will offer live

coverage from the House Floor each day of the session on SDPB2 TV at 2pm (1 MT) or 1pm (Noon MT) on the last legislative day of the week (Jan. 13, 20 & 26). Statehouse Senate, taped coverage from the Senate Floor, will follow the House coverage. Each day is expected to include 2 to 6 hours of coverage.

the latest in a long line of daring escapes. Just a few weeks later, the notorious young outlaw was gunned down by an ambitious sheriff. Demonized by the lawman who killed him, the Kid was soon mythologized by a never-ending stream of dime-store romances, and later, big-screen dramas. Monthly Programming Grids ExpandedThere’s something new in this month’s

SDPB Magazine. The programming grids for television – that allow you to check on your choices on SDPB1, SDPB2 and SDPB3 – have expanded.

The new design will allow SDPB Magazine to offer more information, with four hours of television listed per page. It also allows SDPB to better showcase some great new programming. SDPB Television begins expanded SDPB Kids programming (see page 4)on SDPB3 this month, and an expanded version of Statehouse coverage (see page 3) begins this month on SDPB2.

There’s a learning curve, so here goes.The listings for SDPB1, SDPB2 and

SDPB3 run from 1pm (Noon MT) to 1am (Midnight MT).

As with the previous design, the programs for all three channels at a particular time and day will be listed in order.

The SDPB1 programs will be in the boxes with no shading. SDPB2 and SDPB3 will follow.

A general guide for the hours from 5am (4 MT) to 1pm (Noon MT) starts the television listings on page 9.

The days of each month will be divided into three groups.

Each group of days will use three pages:First page – 1pm (Noon MT) to 5pm (4

MT). Second page – 5pm (4 MT) to 9pm (8

MT).Third page – 9pm (8 MT) to 1am

(Midnight MT).Viewers who tune in during the early

morning hours – 1am (Midnight MT) to 5am (4 MT) can check listings at SDPB.org.

Take a moment to page through the listings and learn the new layout. Then, sit back and prepare for great television.

Fundraising Progressing for Watertown TransmitterSDPB Radio is expanding once again,

and fundraising is under way in the Watertown/Milbank region.

The network is raising funds to place a full-power radio transmitter near Watertown to improve the region’s reception. The new transmitter, scheduled to be placed on an already existing tower, should be up and running by next fall if fundraising is successful.

According to Friends of SDPB Board Member Carol Johnson, the campaign is more than halfway to its goal of $30,000.

Tower Sponsors

To make a contribution, go to SDPB.org/Watertownor contact Friends of SDPB

at 800-333-0789.

SDPB presently has 11 full power transmitters and 9 translators (low-power transmitters) across the state. The 11th transmitter, KYSD near Spearfish, went active just a year ago.

Thank You for Making the SDPB Television Drive a SuccessThank you to the 583 people (including

278 new members) who offered their support during the recent Friends of SDPB membership drive for SDPB TV.

You make a huge impact – quality programming for everyone in South Dakota.
