This month Savor Dakota celebrates the tastes of summer in South Dakota.

Join host Chef MJ Adams as she savors the scents, crunch, and crumbs of the award-winning fresh bread baked at David Napolitano’s Sioux Falls-based Breadico. Watch and learn how you can create your own sourdough starter.

MJ also visits Chef Michael of M.B. Haskett Delicatessen in Sioux Falls to learn his secret for making delectable cornmeal pan-fried walleye and his recipe for Eggplant Caponata. We also visit Michael’s farm, where he keeps chickens and grows the fresh produce that grace the tables of his restaurant.

Next, we venture to Blue Bird Locker in Delmont where Bill Bietz prepares steaks, bacon, and his own German sausage, handed down from his grandparents’ recipe. Learn how Bill inherited the local butchering business from his father, a former John Morrell’s employee, and his favorite way to serve his sought-after brats.

The new episode of Savor Dakota premieres Thursday, Aug 4, at 8pm (7 MT) and Sunday, Aug 7, at 1pm (Noon MT).

Heidi Coffin’s students are some tech-savvy kids. The digital feats her industrious 6- and 7-year olds from Box Elder and Ellsworth Air Force Base perform on their iPads and desktops sound more like college-level curriculum than first grade learning. On a typical school day in her bright, computer-filled classroom, her 21 students research databases, use document cameras, upload photos, and post videos online.

Coffin says when it comes to technology, kids are naturals. “They’re digital natives,” Coffin says. “Their minds work digitally. The technology helps them dive deeper and reach those higher order thinking skills to be able to succeed.”

Coffin knows her stuff when it comes to teaching with technology – so much so that PBS named the first-grade teacher from Badger Clark Elementary a 2016 PBS Digital Innovator, for which she’ll receive

one year of professional development from PBS.

“Technology is integrated throughout everything in

an adult’s life,” says Coffin. “It shouldn’t be any different for a kid. Many districts don’t even have technology teachers anymore because the technology is integrated right into the classroom. There’s not ‘computer time’ for most districts.”

What does a media-rich lesson in first-grade fundamentals – reading and math, for example – look like in Coffin’s classroom? For much of her curriculum, Coffin starts with PBS.

“In first grade, we focus so much on phonics and how to decode words,” says Coffin. “Electric Company is one of my favorites. I incorporate a video clip from the show. PBS has already integrated the common core standards and pulled extraneous content from the clip. The video gets the kids engaged and ready to learn our concept for the day. Then I send them to their iPads to investigate more about the concept or to do a word work activity.”

Next, the students may pull out their iPads for a spelling test or deploy their tablet’s video recorder to record themselves reading. “They’ll review the video to help with their fluency,” says Coffin. “The tech is integrated all day long.”

For Coffin’s students, digital media engages and reinforces, but does not replace, the basics. “Technology is not the only thing that provides the classroom education – it’s more the medium that we use,” she says. “I’ll incorporate a math clip from Cyberchase,” says Coffin. “The kids enjoy the fast pace, the cartoons, the humor. Then I’ll give a math problem on a sticky note website like Lino. They do the problem on a white board, take a picture of it with their iPads, then upload it to our class website. We can see everybody’s

work simultaneously. We talk about their math strategies because the technology generates discussion.”

Coffin says media helps learning take place anywhere. “When we play a clip from Electric Company or Cyberchase, the kids yell out, ‘Oh! I watch this at home!’ They get really excited and it builds off that,” Coffin says. “At home, they might not understand fully the content the clip is talking about, but we build off what they see at home and then they realize it’s not just a classroom thing – it’s a real world thing and they can apply it other places and access it anywhere.”

Incorporating technology, says Coffin, means taking risks using trusted, kid-centric sources and being a student as much as a teacher. “My students know how to do stuff and they show me how things work. I make mistakes, and my students sometimes show me how to do something. They really enjoy the PBS app I loaded onto their iPads and I can give them free reign. Many of them already have it on their devices at home. If they want to keep learning about something, which many of them do, they’ll go home and watch it again.”

Coffin’s tech-based curriculum is based on the SAMR Model, an acronym for Substitution, Augmentation, Modification and Redefinition. “We don’t just want them substituting their learning,” she says. “We want them redefining with technology. The kids are the ones creating. They’re hands-on.”

Coffin’s digital innovation extends to parents, who can access her class website for a daily blog and uploads of their kids’ work, as well

as websites and research databases the kids use in the classroom. “The response to technology in the classroom is mixed for parents and staff,” says Coffin. “Many embrace it and understand that is where our society is going. Others are a little hesitant, but they don’t mind me taking the lead.”

Earlier this summer PBS sent Coffin to the PBS Digital Innovator Summit in Denver. “It was amazing to see 52 teachers from all over the country talking about how important it is to engage students in technology,” says Coffin. “We kept seeing #PBSLovesTeachers, but teachers love PBS, too. PBS really understands where teachers are coming from because they have that education foundation.”

Coffin says she continues to learn from her colleagues and her students. “One of the other PBS innovators is a kindergarten teacher whose students use 3D printers and power drills to build prosthetic hands. They sell them for $30 apiece. It was so inspiring. I feel like I need to up my game. My students can do so much more than what I am even giving them.”

Coffin’s students can expect a fun, challenging school year.To access SDPB & PBS K-12 resources, go to: SDPB.org/learn & PBSDigitalLearning.org

• PBS KIDS reaches nearly 95% of all U.S. television households.

• 41% of kids watch PBS with their parents — more than any other kids’ network.

• PBS KIDS provides nearly all children access to what is often their only source of educational television.

• With no more than 3.25 minutes of sponsorship messages per program, PBS has less than half the clutter of commercial television.

• Families with a household income of less than $40k annually report fewer activities and resources to prepare kids for

school and rely on PBS KIDS for help.

• Soon-to-be 24/7 PBS KIDS streaming service will increase reach and accessibility!

Fostering interest in learning and easing the digital divide for kids who don’t have devices at home is significant work in South Dakota.

According to the 2016 Kids Count Data Book, which calculates state trends in child well-being, 65% of children ages 3 to 4 in South Dakota don’t attend preschool; 68% of the state’s fourth graders scored below a proficient reading level, and the number of eighth graders not proficient in math rose to 62 percent. According to the Federal Communications Commission, 41% of Americans living on tribal lands do not have access to broadband in 2016. The number soars to 68% for tribal lands in rural areas.

Heidi Coffin’s class website is for students & parents.

It’s both pencils and iPads in Coffin’s class.

The Los Angeles Times called American Experience: JFK “a near-miraculous balance of admiration and clear-eyed assessment.” Forever enshrined in myth by an assassin’s bullet, Kennedy’s presidency long defied objective appraisal. Recent assessments have revealed an administration long on promise and vigor, and somewhat lacking in tangible accomplishment. His proposals for a tax cut and civil rights legislation, however, promised significant gains in the months before his assassination. While maturation, as evidenced in the handling of the Cuban missile crisis, was apparent, the potential legacy of the New Frontier will forever be left to speculation.SDPB1: Monday, Aug 8, 8PM (7 MT) & Tuesday, Aug 9, 8PM (7 MT). Hundreds of kids and families participated in Neutrino Day 2016 , a free science festival sponsored by the Sanford Underground Research Facility, July 8 and 9 in Lead.

SDPB Radio’s Dakota Midday Innovation broadcast live from the underground lab and featured NASA’s Jason Crusan. Crusan directs NASA’s Advanced Exploration Systems, where he oversees hundreds of research developers who design everything needed, beyond the rocket and the capsule, for humans to survive a voyage to Mars. Over 100 science enthusiasts attended SDPB’s science café on NASA’s Journey to Mars with Crusan and Radio Director Cara Hetland. Meanwhile, SDPB’s “Science Steve” Rokusek educated and entertained emerging young scientists with his engaging science demonstrations throughout the day at SURF.

The late Earl Nordby of Huron was a stalwart devotee and promoter of opera in South Dakota.

His friend Judge Jon Erickson says Nordby began appreciating the art form at a young age. “His mother loved to listen to the opera,” Erickson says. “And he tells the story that he would be out playing ball with his friends on the weekend, and all of a sudden he would tell them that he had to go home because his mother had chores for him to do, when in reality he was going home to sit down with her and listen to the opera.”

Nordby also wanted to share opera with the state of South Dakota. He sponsored the SDSO’s first opera, and operas that followed. Music Director Delta David Gier says Nordby understood the purpose of the arts. “The positive effect that it has on people of all ages but I think particularly children, the formative years,” Gier says. “He understood that we’re not in the entertainment business. We’re in it because it’s much deeper, much richer, expressing deep human longings and the desire to do good in the world, which is what these composers are all about. And Earl just supported that wholeheartedly.”

Nordby’s daughter, Diane (Nordby) DesLauriers of Mitchell, SD recalls growing up with opera and music at home in Huron. “He would blast opera in the house and on his boombox on the sailboat on

Lake Poinsett,” says DesLauriers. “It would travel across the lake and I’m sure many people over the summer heard opera they weren’t accustomed to.” DesLauriers says because South Dakota was the only thing her father loved more than opera, he wanted to give everyone in the state the opportunity to experience new music. “The real passion of his,” says DesLauriers, “was to hopefully have people pick up on something that they love. He wanted to expose people to it and bring it to South Dakota.”

Nordby sponsored educational programs, including a children’s opera, and audio and video productions of operas, with the goal of opening the performances to a wider audience.

Earl Nordby died Tuesday, March 1, in Huron. SD.

Season Ticket on Morning Classics with Owen DeJong features music performed in or created by South Dakota orchestras and artists. Recently the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra (SDSO) performed the Puccini opera La Bohéme. The performance was sponsored by the Nordby Family Foundation.

To learn more about Earl Nordby and hear the SDSO performance of Puccini’s La Bohéme, tune in to Season Ticket on SDPB Radio, Wednesday, August 10 at 10am (9 MT).

“Invisibilia combines sophisticated storytelling with cultural and scientific reporting, yielding astonishing stories that can feel almost too good to be true. Audio journalism is a satisfying form for such tales: intimate voices, sound artistry, provocative questions phrased casually.” The New Yorker

“Like Radiolab, Invisibilia isn’t in the business of finding firm answers, and nor should it be. The joy here is in the pontificating.” The Independent

SDPB Charter members are some 210 individual donors and families who helped establish the Friends of SDPB with gifts in 1974, 1975, and 1976. Four decades and many, many developments in broadcast media later, charter members continue their strong backing with annual donations, including twenty-one charter members who have provided matching gifts during membership drives that multiply the impact of support for SDPB.

We’d like to showcase some of our charter members so South Dakotans can know the people who help make possible the TV and radio

Friends of SDPB Charter Members: Making SDPB Possible for Generations

programming you enjoy.Fred & Luella Cozad, Martin, SDFred is a retired lawyer and a

member of the SD Hall of Fame. Fred and Luella ran a law office in Martin, SD for 65 years.

Members since: 1974Favorite SDPB programs:

Lawrence Welk, A Prairie Home Companion, musical programs

Why they support SDPB: “SDPB provides a source of information you can’t find anywhere else. You can’t help but benefit from watching SDPB TV or listening to SDPB Radio.”

How did you become a Friend of SDPB? “Gary Nelson of Martin was on the board, and since Gary was part of the group, it must have been alright. We got involved originally because we listen to it, watch it, and benefit from it. We like to support the things we derive benefits from.”

How can South Dakotans keep SDPB strong for the next 40 years? “SDPB can keep doing just what you’re doing – providing good programming. New members can join

to help provide good programming.”Marrelyce & Dr. David Seaman, Rapid City, SDMarrelyce grew up in Faulkton,

SD and is a retired nurse and nurse educator. David, an ophthalmologist, passed away in 2014. Marrelyce continues to support SDPB. Most recently, she made a donation in memory of her husband in support of the Dick Termes art teaching video project.

Members since: 1975Favorite SDPB programs:

Morning Classics with Owen DeJong, Nature, NOVA, educational programs

How did you become a Friend of SDPB? “David first heard of Friends from some friends in Aberdeen. Since we enjoyed the programs, we wanted to support Friends. We like to support the things we enjoy. When my girls were little, we could always watch entertaining programs on SDPB-TV

and learn from it.”Rosemary & Bill Draeger, Sioux Falls, SDRosemary and Bill are retired

business owners who relocated to South Dakota from San Francisco in 1974. Rosemary started the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation.

Favorite SDPB programs: Morning Edition, All Things Considered, South Dakota

Focus, Downton Abbey, Antiques Roadshow, Father Brown, Ken Burns documentaries.

“My favorite program for many years was Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood for our kids. Now with our grandkids we’re enjoying Daniel Tiger who is reminiscent of Mr. Rogers, who is one of the brilliant men of our time.

How did you become Friends of SDPB? “When we moved from San Francisco to South Dakota, I was in the middle of watching Upstairs Downstairs – it was so gripping! – and I also had to give up my tickets to the SF symphony when Van Cliburn was coming. I honestly wondered, ‘will they have this in South Dakota’? Three days after we got here, a woman called from the symphony office, asking if I wanted to join. Van Cliburn was coming to Sioux Falls. I turned on the television and there was Upstairs Downstairs playing on SDPB. That was 1974. We were planning on staying two years and we are still here.”

How does SDPB enrich your life? “We are so appreciative of SDPB and all that it does. When we sit down to watch television, SDPB invariably offers something that is intriguing, interesting, that offers a learning opportunity about a topic we don’t know about. I’m looking for things on television that are interesting because we are curious about the world.

One of the reasons I love Antiques Roadshow is that it’s a discussion of history in such a fascinating new way. We just absolutely love watching it — you learn so much about history and the arts and all kinds of things. It’s simply mind expanding.”

How can your legacy be continued? “My recommendation is put a little money into celebrating the great programs that your children have access to and keep it strong for the next generation. To me that’s not hard. It doesn’t take a lot of money — you don’t have to be rich. All you are doing is voting yes. With a little bit of money, just vote yes to the wonderful programs that you and your children are enjoying. Stretch your curiosity about the world and then vote for it. Vote for the expansion of your mind.”
