The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra engages the ears

and the eyes. “Happy 125th Birthday South Dakota” takes

it to a whole new level.

A stunning collaboration by the Symphony and SDPB

combines a performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No.

6 with aerial footage of South Dakota. The music guides

a birds-eye-view journey over our cities, mountains and

plains.

The concert will air on SDPB1 Television on Saturday,

Nov. 1, at 9pm (8 MT). The state marks its 125th

anniversary the next day.

“We brought the things that we do best together,” says

Delta David Gier, Symphony Music Director.

Symphony Music Director Delta David Gier and SDPB Television Producer Kevin Patten talk about coordinating video with the Symphony performance.

November 2014 5

It started with a vision and ended with a tradition. “We entered into it knowing we had a great idea,” Gier says.

SDPB and the Symphony have partnered before to bring concerts to television. This time, however, SDPB is part of the performance. The video that intertwines with the Symphony performance was shot in 2011 for Over South Dakota, a spectacular high-definition documentary that features an aerial tour of the state.

With this in mind, Gier had the task of picking out the music to go along with the video. What, he wondered, would best fit the character of South Dakota? In the end, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 fit the bill.

“Each of the movements is a picture of life.” He added that Beethoven is a traditional choice for any orchestra, but every concert is a chance to explore new things.

Kevin Patten, a Producer for SDPB Television, said putting this project together was anything but ordinary.

“When you add in the playback

and syncing of video to a live orchestra performance, it is a big challenge,” says Patten. “It requires coordinating camera operators, a score reader and a director as well as a video playback system.”

The concert, performed at the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls in October, kicked off Gier’s 11th season as Music Director. Gier has been leading the symphony since 2004. Under his direction, the symphony has won the ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming for seven seasons.

This season the Symphony is bringing back the Lakota Music Project and the opera. Funding is often a challenge for the Symphony, but this year, everything is falling into place.

The Symphony collaborates with the Lakota community for the groundbreaking Lakota Music Project. SDSO musicians performed alongside a Lakota drumming group earlier in October and they also performed at Crazy Horse on South Dakota’s Native American Day

(Oct. 13) this year. Bringing back an opera was

also a great accomplishment for this season. When the economy suffered, the Symphony’s opera presentations suffered as well. It is the most expensive performance the symphony puts on. This year, the funding came through.

Wagner’s Flying Dutchman takes the stage in February and the lead is played by a Flandreau native, Louis Otey.

Gier looks forward to another adventurous season.

“A symphony orchestra is a cultural institution, not just entertainment,” says Gier. “The possibilities keep getting more diverse and more colorful.”

(ABOVE) SDPB Television Director Kyle Mork works behind the scenes with Sarah Burman, Director of Operations and Education for the Symphony, to coordinate the production.

(LEFT) The performance drew rave reviews from the audience.

NOVA presents an incredible predator in Bigger than T. rex. Almost a century ago, paleontologists found fossil bones from a dinosaur that was bigger than Tyrannosaurus rex. The Spinosaurus fossils were destroyed in a WW II bombing raid. Now, the discovery of new bones in Morocco is reopening the investigation into this epic beast. Follow the paleontologists who are reconstructing this terrifying carnivore, a 53-foot-long behemoth with a huge dorsal sail, scimitar-like claws and superjaws that reigned more than 65 million years ago.SDPB1: Wednesday, Nov. 5, 8pm (7 MT)SDPB2: Thursday, Nov. 13, 6 & 11 pm (5 & 10 MT)

The Politician’s Husband, a three-part drama, explores the shifting power dynamics in a marriage. Aiden Hoynes (David Tennant), a senior Cabinet Minister, is happily married to Freya (Emily Watson), a junior Minister who has consistently put her own career ambitions on hold for the sake of Aiden’s career and their family. When Aiden’s career path comes to an abrupt halt as Freya’s simultaneously soars, the power balance within their marriage is altered. In his desperation to cling to power, Aiden risks destroying everything he holds most dear.SDPB1: Sundays, Nov. 9-23, 10pm (9 MT)

Lecture Features Prominent PoliticiansSDPB1: Sunday, Nov. 9, 2pm (1 MT)SDPB Radio: Monday, Nov. 10, Noon (11 MT)

SDPB is featuring the Daschle Dialogues on Television and Radio in November.

The discussion – “How Much Partisanship is Too Much? Two Former Party Leaders Discuss How and Why to Rebuild Bipartisan Bridges” – is the first in a planned series of lectures. It features a discussion between former U.S. Sens. Tom Daschle (D-SD) and Trent Lott (R-MS). Veteran national correspondent and SDSU alumnus Chuck Raasch serves as moderator.

The event, held in October at South Dakota State University in Brookings, will air on SDPB1 Television on Sunday, Nov. 9, at 2pm (1 MT), and on SDPB Radio on Monday, Nov. 10, at Noon (11 MT).

Daschle and Lott served as Senate leaders of their respective parties – both as majority and minority leaders during the historic 50-50 split in the U.S. Senate from Jan. 3, 2001, to Jan. 3, 2003, and during the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. They are now affiliated with the Bipartisan Policy Center, a nonprofit Washington, D.C.-based think tank that actively promotes bipartisanship.

The Daschle Dialogues is planned as a series of lectures and talks that will feature nationally relevant figures at South Dakota State to address thought-provoking topics.

Television Offers Special programming on HolidaysSDPB1 Television marks Veterans

Day and Thanksgiving Day with special programming.

On Tuesday, Nov. 11, Veterans Day, at 8pm (7 MT), SDPB1 will air Navy Seals – Their Untold Story. The new two-hour special program recounts some memorable missions through firsthand accounts – including that of a D-Day demolition team member – and through never-before-seen footage, home movies and personal mementoes.

On Thanksgiving Day, SDPB1 will offer an encore of the South Dakota All-State Chorus & Orchestra final concert at 1pm (Noon MT).

A new one-hour program, the South Dakota Elementary Honor Choir 2014 will follow at 3pm (2 MT), featuring fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders from more than 40 different schools across the state.

Thanksgiving evening, SDPB1 features two Martin Clunes specials: Heavy Horsepower at 7pm (6 MT) and Martin Clunes & a Lion Called

Mugie at 8pm (7 MT). The specials will be followed by the ongoing comedy/drama Doc Martin, which stars Clunes, at 9pm (8 MT).

Martin Clunes – Heavy Horsepower examines the role of the world’s working horses as Clunes begins training his own beloved Clydesdales, Ronnie and Bruce,

In Martin Clunes & a Lion Called Mugie, he partners with conservationist Tony Fitzjohn for an historic wildlife mission: to reintroduce lions to Kora National Reserve in Kenya for the first time in 25 years.

125 years ago, South Dakota became a state, on Nov. 2, 1889. SDPB Television celebrates with a special Dakota Life program premiering on Thursday, Nov. 6, at 8pm (7 MT).

The program will look at the stained glass restoration project in the State Capitol Building; a wagon train adventure from Avon to Pierre; a replica Dakota Territory schoolhouse in Vermillion; and the photos from A Day in South Dakota, part of SDPB’s yearlong Landscapes of South Dakota project.

Segments include:• Capitol Stained Glass

Restoration/Installation – Glass was removed from the Capitol last summer and shipped to Wisconsin for restoration. The panels will be

re-installed in time for the 125th celebration.

• 125th Wagon Train – We catch up with a wagon train near Wessington Springs as it travels from Avon to Pierre.

• One-Room Schoolhouse – A replica of a schoolhouse built in Dakota Territory is nearly completed. Dakota Life followed the progress.

• A Day in South Dakota – Almost 900 photographs captured our beautiful state and its people on Aug. 19 to show A Day in South Dakota.

Dakota Life examines the people, places and history of South Dakota each month. The half-hour program travels throughout the state to strengthen our knowledge about the state and the bonds between people who live here. This year, the program

also features the Landscapes of South Dakota, SDPB’s yearlong effort to share many facets of our unique identity as the state celebrates 125 years of statehood.

The program airs several times throughout each month to give viewers an opportunity to tune in. Past programs are available on-demand at SDPB.org/DakotaLife.

It’s November and time to think about – taxes.

Now is the time to make the contributions that will help Friends of SDPB and help reduce your taxes. If you itemize on your federal income tax, don’t forget to add in your contributions to the Friends of South Dakota Public Broadcasting.

No matter how much you give a year, be it $40 or $1,000, you can add it in when you itemize. The only limit

is that your charitable contributions cannot exceed 50 percent (half) of your adjusted gross income. For details on charitable gifts, call Friends of SDPB at 800-333-0789 or go to SDPB.org/Friends.

There are plenty of ways to make an end-of-the-year contribution. Here are a few.

• Check or money order.• Stocks. • Retirement accounts. If you set

• Donate your car or another vehicle. A 5- to 10-year-old vehicle can support many hours of public broadcasting. A newer vehicle will do even more. Just remember, the tax deduction is based on the amount the vehicle brings in, not on Blue Book value.

Karen Hofman of Clear Lake with a contribution.

Karen Westerman of Chancellor remembered Diana McCann with a gift to Friends of SDPB.

Ardeth Rang of Sioux Falls has given a donation in memory of Hope Limmer.

Kim Schultz of Wayne, Neb., made two special gifts.
