Learn. Dream. Grow.2

South Dakota Public Broadcasting has been an ever-evolving organization. We began as a lone AM radio station in 1922, added a TV station in 1961, developed a statewide TV network in the 1970s and established a statewide radio network in the 1980s. The most recent addition to our network is our presence online.

Like Public Radio and Public TV, SDPB.org began as a humble effort. Members of our staff, particularly Larry Rohrer, had been dabbling on the Internet in the mid-1990s. As it became clear that a presence online could serve a positive purpose and enhance the efforts of South Dakota Public Broadcasting, the effort to develop a website got serious.

On May 31, 1996, we went online with our first website located at usd.edu/sdpb, a page housed on the University of South Dakota’s website. Our early effort, like so many other websites of the day, was an experiment in what could be done, how the site might get used, and who might be interested in using it.

The next year, we created our own, stand-alone website at SDPB.org. Our site became home to information about the network, including the TV schedule, press releases, event announcements, and the like. As technology improved, and personal computers became a part of everyday life, SDPB Online developed, to the point where it became its own department.

Today the Online department has a staff of four. They attend every SDHSAA sanctioned event and provide results, photos of the activities and other statistics. Many of these events are streamed live online. Also, in partnership with the Legislative Research Council, SDPB.org streams every committee meeting and general session that takes place in the South Dakota Legislature.

As classrooms move toward the use of web-based technology, SDPB has migrated much of our content to allow easy incorporation in schools across the state. SDPB.org/edu hosts a digital learning library that meets state school content standards, can be used by home-schoolers, and houses content for lifelong learners (see page 7).

Most recently we have adopted technology that allows streaming of events to mobile devices. As technology changes, SDPB will be adapting and offering more opportunities for you to interact with us.

Farms, Football, History – Part of Dakota Life Thursday, Dec. 1, 8pm (7 MT)SDPB.org/dakotalife

Farm life, high school football, history and more are all part of SDPB Television’s Dakota Life in December. The new 30-minute episode of Dakota Life premieres on SDPB1 TV on Thursday, Dec. 1, at 8pm (7 MT).The episode includes:

High School Playoffs by the Numbers – Final scores only tell part of the story of South Dakota’s annual High School Football Championships. SDPB’s Gary Ellenbolt looks at this year’s odd and, you might even say quirky, statistics.

The Real Farm Girl – Laura Nielson is the 24-year-old manager of a Crooks dairy

operation. She’s also an Internet sensation with “The Real Farm Girl,” a popular series of video posts on YouTube and in her blog.

So Many Old Barns, So Little Time – Jim Stone is a retired Vermillion man on a mission. He’s researching and cataloging old barns in Clay County with the goal of creating a permanent record for every one.

The Art of the Barn Quilt – Colorful painted quilt squares displayed on barns and sheds have been popular in other states for a number of years, but the trend is only recently making its way into South Dakota.

The Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center – Millions of historical artifacts from Lead’s and Deadwood’s gold rush days now have a home.

Thank You for Memorial Gifts to Friends of SDPBThe Friends of SDPB has received a

special memorial gift. Thank you.Ron and Jean Lounsbery of Centerville

have made a gift in memory of Alvena Snoozy and Fern Knutson.

Memorial gifts help create a legacy because they become part of the Friends of SDPB endowment.

Friends of SDPB is grateful for special gifts. Special gifts can include:

Memorial gifts.•Gifts to commemorate a special •occasion.Estate-planning gifts.•Vehicle donations.•Gifts of property such as stocks and •bonds.

To make a special gift, call the Friends at 800-333-0789 or write Friends of SDPB, PO Box 5000, Brookings, SD 57006.

’Tis the Season … to Think about GivingNow is the time to check with your

advisers about your financial plans as the year comes to a close.

Reviewing personal, philanthropic, and other plans before the year ends is a good idea. Why? Because it gives you the opportunity to complete pledges or make special gifts to your favorite charitable interests that may bring tax savings to you next April.

Do you itemize on your federal income tax? Don’t forget to add in your contributions to the Friends of South Dakota Public Broadcasting. No matter how much you give a year, be it $40 or $1,000, you can add it in when you itemize. Gifts to the Friends of SDPB are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law. The only limit is that your charitable contributions cannot exceed 50 percent (half) of your adjusted

gross income. Money isn’t the only thing your

can give to claim your deduction. Certain kinds of property, appreciated assets such as stocks or a donated automobile can be included, as well. But keep in mind that some property gifts may include special rules.

There are many ways to make thoughtful, generous, and tax-wise gifts by the end of the

year. While all gifts are appreciated, some provide you with extra tax savings or other rewards. The Friends of SDPB will be pleased to share these ideas with you by sending additional information on how to complete your gifts in a timely manner for maximum benefits.

Call 800-333-0789 or e-mail [email protected].

Gifts may be sent to Friends of SDPB, P.O. Box 5000, Brookings, SD 57006.
