Drama Continues at Downton AbbeyChange is in the air as the aristocrats cope

with last season’s shocking finale. Three generations of the Crawley family have conflicting interests in the estate. The much-anticipated premiere of Masterpiece Classic Downton Abbey, Season IV airs on SDPB1 on Sundays, Jan. 5-Feb. 23, at 8pm (7 MT).

All who tuned in last season know that Matthew Crawley – heir to Downton Abbey, husband to Lady Mary, and brand new father to a baby boy and successor – lies dead on a country road next to his overturned roadster. On top of this, the family is still grieving over the death in childbirth of Sybil, Mary’s youngest sister, who also left a baby behind.

Season IV opens six months later. Although it is the 1920s, Britain still observes mourning rituals that are almost Victorian in their solemnity. Nonetheless, the Crawleys are beginning to snap out of it: Robert, Lord Grantham must manage the estate without his canny son-in-law; Lady Grantham faces a staffing crisis; Lord Grantham’s mother, Violet, who has seen enough tragedy, knows how to recoup quickly; Isobel, Matthew’s mother, may never recover; Lady Edith, who was jilted at the altar, tempts scandal with a new beau; and Mary now finds herself the most desirable widow in Yorkshire.

The servants also pick up, buck up, and get on with it – with new arrivals, departures, rivalries, and betrayals among the downstairs staff.

Life goes on at Downton Abbey.Lily James plays Lady Rose in the new season of Downton Abbey.

SDPB Boards Plan Virtual Meetings in January

SDPB Leader HonoredJulie Andersen, Executive Director of SDPB, accepts the Distinguished Service Award from Wayne Carney of the South Dakota High School Activities Association. She received the award at the State Class 11 AAA High School Football Championship game last November. The honor recognized her efforts for “the furtherance of high school activities while making significant contributions that have exemplified the highest ideals of service given to the Association and to the youth of our state.”

Adaptive Design Comes to SDPB.orgA few short years ago, a tablet was

something you swallowed when you had a headache, but today it’s a word used to describe a hand-held computer. And between tablets, like the iPad, and smart phones, more and more people are accessing the Internet primarily through these portable devices.

Speaking of headaches, designing a website for the different screen sizes of phones and tablets is enough to make someone who designs a website head straight for the medicine cabinet.

What SDPB has done to solve the screen size dilemma is use a method that adapts the information we want to communicate to the devices you want to use to see it. Finally, a website that responds and scales intelligently

to your device. It’s an amazing thing to see!Did you know that all your favorite radio

and television archives are available to you anytime, anywhere? Our live streams are mobile friendly as well. Listen to SDPB Radio from our website or the NPR News app, and watch live television broadcasts and premieres of your favorite local programs on your computer or mobile device as well.

Whether you need us on your Nook, crave us on your Kindle, or dial us up on your phone - SDPB is keeping pace with future.

If you have never used the SDPB website, we invite you to point your browser to SDPB.org and explore the offerings. Schedules, teacher resources, and much more are available. We’d love to hear your comments!

SDPB’s governing boards plan virtual meetings on Monday, January 27. The South Dakota Board of Directors for Educational Telecommunications, the network’s governing board, will meet at 9:30am (8:30 MT). The Friends of South Dakota Public Broadcasting Board will meet at 10:30am (9:30 MT).

Board members and the public may attend at the following locations.

Frontline goes inside the secret state to explore life under its new ruler, offering a glimpse of how some North Koreans are defying authority in a country where just being caught with illegal DVDs could mean imprisonment.

Coywolves are a mix of two breeds – coyotes and wolves.

New Programs Debut in January

NatureMeet the CoywolfSDPB1: Wednesday, Jan. 22, 7pm (6 MT)SDPB2: Sunday, Jan. 26, 7 & 11pm (6 &10 MT)PBS.org/Nature

The coywolf, a mixture of western coyote and eastern wolf, is a hauntingly beautiful carnivore found increasingly on the streets of North American cities. Its appearance is recent – within the past 90 years – in evolutionary terms, a blip in time. New York wildlife biologist Roland Kays tracks and photographs coywolves with remote motion sensor cameras, collects road kill and scat, and obtains tissue and bone samples from fur trappers, hunters and others to unravel the mysteries that define this new species.

FrontlineSecret State of North KoreaSDPB1: Tuesday, Jan. 14, 9pm (8 MT)SDPB2: Wednesday, Jan. 15, 5 & 8pm (4 & 7 MT)PBS.org/Frontline

Just two years in the job and armed with nuclear weapons, North Korea’s Kim Jong-Un is the world’s youngest dictator, ruling one of the world’s most isolated countries. He wants to maintain tight control over what North Koreans see of the world – and what the world sees of North Korea.

NOVAMonster TyphoonSDPB1: Wednesday, Jan. 22, 8pm (7 MT)SDPB2: Thursday, Jan. 23, 6 & 11pm (5 & 10 MT)PBS.org/NOVA

On Nov. 8, Typhoon Haiyan slammed into the Philippines, whipping the islands with 200-mile-per-hour winds and sending a two-story-high storm surge flooding into homes, schools and hospitals, leaving thousands dead and millions homeless. Meteorologists track the storm and reveal why the Pacific is such fertile ground for cyclones. But that’s just part of the story. With crews on the ground within days of the storm, NOVA reveals how conditions deteriorated in the storm’s aftermath, as impassable roads and shuttered gas stations paralyzed the relief effort. How can we prepare for the next monster typhoon?
