Stavig Letters WinsSecond Top Award

SDPB.org/StavigLettersSDPB Television’s Emmy®-winning

production of The Stavig Letters earned a national NETA (National Educational Telecommunications Association) Award for History content during the recent awards ceremony in St. Louis. The SDPB production earned honors in competition with public television stations from throughout the country.

The docu-drama is based on a little-known treasure collected by the descendants of a Norwegian immigrant to South Dakota. Over more than half a century, between 1881 and 1938, immigrant Lars Stavig, who settled near Sisseton, S.D., and his brother, Knut, a farmer/fisherman in Norway, and family members exchanged dozens of letters. Both families kept their letters and these treasures finally came together in the late 20th century to provide a first-hand look at the immigrant experience.

The one-hour production is based on the readers’ theater play created from the letters by Dr. Wayne S. Knutson, Professor Emeritus of the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. The SDPB Television program earned a Regional Emmy® in 2011.

The NETA judges commented: “The Stavig Letters could have been deadly boring. Instead, a show based on correspondence, and using letters and/or graphic representations thereof, was a powerful documentary.”

The program was produced with the support of a grant from the South Dakota Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and with the help and support of the Stavig Museum in Sisseton.

Tune in as Gov. Dennis Daugaard details budget plans for South Dakota’s 2014 fiscal year when he presents the annual Budget Address on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 1pm (Noon MT). The speech will be carried live on SDPB1 TV, SDPB Radio and on SDPB.org. The address begins SDPB’s annual Statehouse coverage, the state’s most comprehensive look at the South Dakota Legislature.

The 88th Legislative Session opens on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at 1pm (Noon MT) with the Governor’s State-of-the-State Address.

After that, SDPB will kick off regular Statehouse coverage.

SDPB1 TelevisionOn Fridays, SDPB1 will offer a one-hour

program to wrap up each week of the session. Statehouse will look at top decisions, issues and activities.

SDPB2 TelevisionStatehouse House will offer live coverage

from the House Floor each day of the session on SDPB2 TV – daily at 2pm (1 MT) except at 1pm (Noon MT) on the last legislative day of the week. Statehouse Senate, taped coverage from the Senate Floor, will follow the House coverage. Each day is expected to include 2 to 6 hours of coverage.

Nature Adventures expands its reach outside the South Dakota region in Season 5 with trips throughout the United States. The new season, which started on SDPB1 Television in November, takes us to Tennessee, Wyoming, Texas and South Dakota in December.

Series hosts Todd Magnuson and Terri Lawrenz invite viewers to find excitement in the natural world. The program, produced by Caribou Productions in South Dakota, includes great online educational materials designed for use in grades 3-5 classrooms, all correlated to SD Content Standards for Science, at SDPB.org/NatureAdventures.

The television program offers adventures and new understanding of the outdoors for all ages. The show is carried on SDPB Television as well as several states in the region.

Downton Abbey Returns for Festival

The Celtic Woman ensemble presents a holiday special on Dec. 1.

Season II of Masterpiece Classic’s mega-hit Downton Abbey encores on Sundays throughout the month of December, beginning with a special Festival program on Dec. 2 at 8pm (7 MT). The saga, which follows the dramas of the upper class and servant class in WW I-era England, premieres a third season in January.

Another highlight of membership drive programming in December includes Celtic Woman A Christmas Celebration on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 7pm (6 MT). Viewers will have a chance to get tickets to an upcoming live performance in Sioux Falls.

Celtic Thunder and Ed Sullivan’s Top Performers round out the primetime schedule on Dec. 1, and a Best of Festival program, featuring a viewers’ favorite, will precede Masterpiece on Dec. 2.

Antiques Roadshow Features SD Next Spring

A Rapid City appraisal is taped for possible use in the show.

You’ll have to wait until spring to see the Antiques Roadshow programs taped in Rapid City.

The programs will premiere on Mondays, April 22, April 29 and May 6, 2013, at 7pm (6 MT), and encore on the following Sunday afternoons.

The Rapid City shows will feature a wide variety of items, including at least one appraisal in the six figures. The programs were taped on July 14

offering free appraisals of antiques and collectibles.

Antiques Roadshow is sponsored by Liberty Mutual Insurance and Subaru and is produced for PBS by WGBH Boston. Executive producer is Marsha Bemko.

Several local sponsors helped make SDPB’s participation in the Rapid City appraisal event possible. They include Black Hills Community Bank; Deadwood History, Inc. (Adams Museum & House, Days of ’76 Museum and the Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center), and Reptile Gardens.

End the Year with a Tax-Deductible GiftSDPB.org/Friends

2012 is just about over. That means that now is the time to think about those pesky taxes that come due in April. Do you itemize on your federal income tax? Don’t forget to add in your contributions to the Friends of South Dakota Public Broadcasting.

No matter how much you give a year, be it $40 or $1,000, you can add it in when you itemize. The only limit is that your charitable contributions cannot exceed 50 percent (half) of your adjusted gross income. For details on charitable gifts, call Friends of SDPB at 800-333-0789 or got to SDPB.org/Friends.

There are plenty of ways to make an end-of-the-year contribution. Here are a few.• Check or money order.• Stock. Did you know that Uncle Sam

takes a share when you sell stock? If the value has increased substantially and you’ve had the stock for more than a year, you would end up paying capital gains taxes when you sell. Sell it yourself, and you’ll still have to pay the tax, even if you give the proceeds away. But if you give the stock itself to the Friends of SDPB, for example, you can claim a charitable deduction for the full value of the stock at the time of donation and avoid capital gains taxes, too. Conversely, if you’ve made capital gains and you still have a stock that’s lost value, sell that stock, use it to help offset your capital gains, and give the proceeds

to Friends for a charitable deduction. It’s a way to get a double dividend, so to speak.

• Retirement accounts. If you set up your will so that the remainder of IRAs or other retirement accounts goes to a charitable donation, your heirs won’t have to worry about the taxes that would have applied to those accounts.

• Donate your car or another vehicle. A 5- to 10-year-old vehicle can support many hours of public broadcasting. A newer vehicle will do even more. Just remember, the tax deduction is based on the amount the vehicle brings in, not on Blue Book value.
