No matter where we live, at one time or another, cancer is on our minds. It’s the leading cause of death in South Dakota, according to the American Cancer Society. Each year there are an estimated 4,000 new cases and 1,600 deaths in the state.
“Each day on average, 10-11 South Dakotans are diagnosed with cancer and four die from the disease,” says Jill Ireland, the American Cancer Society’s South Dakota Health Systems Manager.
Although the numbers are high, the death rate from cancer has declined 20% over the past two decades, she adds. There are 14 million American survivors alive today and the number continues to grow. South Dakota is

home to more than 40,000 survivors. Our relationship with cancer – its
history and treatment developments – is the focus of a new Ken Burns series, Cancer – The Emperor of All Maladies, that will be featured on SDPB Television beginning March 30. The three-part, six-hour “biography” of cancer covers its first documented appearances thousands of years ago through today’s battle to cure, control and conquer cancer. The project aims to reshape the way we see cancer and strip away some of the fear and misunderstanding that has long surrounded it. The series is directed Barak Goodman, and executive produced by Ken Burns, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book “The Emperor of All
Maladies: A Biography of Cancer” by Siddhartha Mukherjee, M.D.Episode One: Magic Bullets
SDPB1: Monday, March 30, 8pm (7 MT) This episode ventures back in
time to recount the early efforts to understand and fight the disease; from medieval apothecaries to the first use of radical surgery and radiation at the turn of the 20th century. We’re introduced to key figures including Dr. Sidney Farber (the “father of chemotherapy”) and philanthropist-advocate Mary Lasker. The episode moves to the present as it tells the moving stories of two children grappling with leukemia, the disease that Farber did more than anyone to conquer.

Episode Two: The Blind Men and the Elephant
SDPB1: Tuesday, March 31, 8pm (7 MT)Episode Two chronicles the decades
between the declaration of the federal government’s War on Cancer in 1971 and the breakthrough drugs Herceptin and Gleevec in 2000. This tumultuous period was characterized by a widening chasm between the research lab and the clinic. Shifting ground from childhood leukemia to breast cancer, the episode includes the contemporary story of a patient- a breast cancer surgeon who herself is diagnosed with the disease and must decide how to fight it. Episode Three: Finding the Achilles Heel
SDPB1: Wednesday, April 1, 8pm (7 MT)There is now enormous optimism
that the “targeted therapy revolution” will rapidly result in the conquest of cancer. But, as more and more is understood about the variety of genetic mutations that underlie cancer and
about the cancer cell’s adaptability, optimism is fading. The series ends with the moving stories of two patients undergoing the latest therapies, and viewers are left on a note of hope that within a generation many, if not all, cancers will have been converted from fatal to chronic diseases.
Edward Herrmann narrates the series. It was his final project. The actor, known for playing the grandfather in “The Gilmore Girls,” died of cancer on Dec. 31.
Herrmann collapsed because of a seizure on the first day he came to work and had to explain to Goodman, the film’s director, that it was because he had brain cancer.
“He felt it appropriate that this would be his final project,” Goodman told TV NewsCheck.
An extensive website, at CancerFilms.org, offers information for the vast community of patients and survivors, family members, caregivers, scientists, clinicians and other healthcare providers, as well as the public at large. Participants can share their stories at the website, engage with the project on Twitter via @CancerFilm or #CancerFilm, and visit the project on Facebook at www.facebook.com/CancerFilm.
The website features several personal stories, information and previews of the series. It also includes links to a number of organizations that are involved in the fight against cancer.
Nearly one in two men and one in three women will come face to face with cancer in their lifetime.
Some 1.6 million new cancer patients will be diagnosed in the United States for 2015. In South Dakota, that translates into 4,000 new cases.

the air as SDPB Television celebrates Feb. 28-March 22 with amazing specials. Check the listings on pages 8-15 for times and go online at SDPB.org to stay up to date with new additions to the schedule.
Rock My Soul (March 3, 7, 8, 13 & 17) inspires with the stars from the world of Gospel. Join the Fairfield Four, the McCrary Sisters, Amos Lee, Buddy Miller, Lee Ann Womack, Van Hunt and Lucinda Williams to celebrate one of the most popular musical genres.
The Music of Ireland with Eamonn McCrystal (March 1, 9 & 15) offers a striking new tenor voice and a wide array of music composed and performed by some of the country’s artists, including popular songs from Van Morrison, Jimmy Kennedy and others, as well as haunting traditional pieces.
Celtic Woman celebrates its 10-year anniversary with Celtic Woman Fan Favorites (March 4, 9, 15 & 17). We’ll be swept away by the spellbinding songs, mesmerizing voices and dazzling dances of this unique all-female ensemble.
The troubled life of one of America’s most popular singer/songwriters is explored in a new special, John Denver: Country Boy (March 3 & 8).
Old musical favorites are back with everything from classical to folk to rock to pop, as well. We’ll hear from Bing Crosby; Ed Sullivan; Peter, Paul and Mary; and Lawrence Welk, among others.
Advice is on the agenda, including Aging Backwards with Miranda Esmonde-White (March 1, 2, 7, 8 & 21). The fitness guru provides valuable insights on combating the physical signs and consequences of aging. In addition, financial tips from Suze Orman and Ed Slott, dieting help from Drs. Joel Fuhrman and Michael Rozien, sewing with Nancy Zieman, and travel with Rick Steves will help us plan our leisure time.
Tune in Feb. 28-March 22 for great specials, South Dakota High School Achievement events (see page 3) and more. It’s all because you support public broadcasting. Thank you.
10 years of fan favorites feature the voices and sounds of the Celtic Woman ensemble.

Expand Your Knowledge with SDPB.orgEvery year, thousands across South
Dakota make use of the extensive resources found at SDPB.org/Learn. There are materials for kids, parents, teachers and lifelong learners from SDPB and PBS.
For example, you can access dozens of great science ideas, including experiments for the classroom or at home. Science materials include science demonstrations from SDPB’s own “Science Steve” Rokusek with video lessons, lesson plans for teachers or homeschoolers and activity ideas. In addition, dozens of activities are available at the click of a button from SDPB or PBS Kids shows like Wild Kratts, Sid the Science Kid, Dragonfly TV, Design Squad, and Cyberchase. More mature science buffs can find resources from NOVA and Nature.
One of the most popular features is a series of dissection videos, featuring Science Steve, created to enhance the classroom experience.
SDPB.org/Learn also includes access to teacher guides, aligned to South Dakota content standards, for a number of SDPB productions, and extensive Native American resources. PBS teacher resources can be accessed from the site, too.
SDPB is essentially the biggest
educational institution in South Dakota. Through broadcast and web resources, your network is changing the lives of South Dakotans of all ages. Expand your knowledge by taking advantage of free materials at SDPB.org/Learn and while you are there, register for the “Educators Newsletter.” Some 2,000 South Dakota educators already have.

In 2014 alone, SDPB’s original concert program No Cover, No Minimum Radio, Saturdays at 11pm (10 MT), produced 37 original hours of live music performances from venues stretching from Sioux Falls to Spearfish. SDPB Radio captured and broadcast 19 full-length classical concert performances from the South Dakota Symphony, Black Hills Chamber Music Society, Black Hills Symphony, and the High School All-State Band & Chorus for Morning Classics with Owen DeJong,

Tune in for some amazing flavor with America’s Test Kitchen Radio on Sundays at 11am (10 MT) on SDPB Radio.
America’s Test Kitchen Radio applies the no-nonsense, first-hand testing approach of the popular television show to the wide world of food, dining, and cooking. Each episode features food and cookware recommendations and in-depth interviews.
Topics can range from historic cookbooks to the science behind taste to recommendations for kitchen gifts.
America’s Test Kitchen is a real 2,500 square foot test kitchen located just outside of Boston that is home to more than three dozen full-time cooks and product testers. The mission is simple: to develop the absolute best recipes for all of your favorite foods. To do this, the staff tests each recipe 30, 40, sometimes as many as 70 times, until they arrive at the combination of ingredients, technique, temperature, cooking time, and equipment that yields the best, most-foolproof recipe.
Chris Kimball hosts. Kimball has founded magazines like Cook’s Illustrated and Cook’s Country magazine. He has been host of public television’s America’s Test Kitchen for 14 years – the program airs on SDPB1 Television on Saturdays at 3pm (2 MT). Kimball has been widely featured on television programs and in print media and is the author of several books about cooking and food.
Test Kitchen Takes Mystery Out of CookingThe extensive website at
AmericasTestKitchen.com offers:• Recipes – From beans to
soups, the Test Kitchen shares recipes on a wide variety of foods.
• Equipment reviews – Learn what the Test Kitchen has discovered on bakeware, cookware, kitchen basics, knives, small appliances and tools and gadgets.
• Taste tests – The Test Kitchen staff is trying out new and old products. Their findings are available on the site.
• Science – Try out a variety of tips and learn about what you’re eating. For example, gluten is in the news. The Test Kitchen explains just what it is. Or, you may discover why it’s better to grind your own hamburger.
