ND Journalist EarnsNeuharth Award SDPB1: Thursday, Oct. 4, 7pm (6 MT) Sunday, Oct. 7, 1pm (Noon MT)

Newspaper columnist Marilyn Hagerty, 86, a University of South Dakota graduate who was Al Neuharth’s first editor 65 years ago, will receive the 2012 Al Neuharth Award for Excellence in the Media on Oct. 4, 2012.

SDPB Television will cover the ceremony with a live 90-minute special on SDPB1 at 7pm (6 MT) on Thursday, Oct. 4. The event takes place in the University of South Dakota Aalfs Auditorium at Slagle Hall, 414 East Clark St., Vermillion. Doors will open at 6:15 p.m. No tickets are required for general seating, available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Hagerty, who writes columns for the North Dakota Grand Forks Herald, drew widespread media attention earlier this year when her straightforward feature story about the opening of the first Olive Garden restaurant in Grand Forks went viral on the Internet, and led to coverage on television, in newspapers, on websites and in social media.

The award, recognizing lifetime achievement, is named for USA TODAY and Freedom Forum founder Al Neuharth, a South Dakota native and 1950 USD journalism graduate. Neuharth will be on campus to honor Hagerty as a model journalist dedicated to serving local communities through consistently fair, truthful and relevant coverage. Hagerty is the 26th person honored by the Freedom Forum and the university since the Al Neuharth Award program began in 1989.

“Marilyn, my classmate back in the ’40s and editor of the student paper, took a chance on me as rookie reporter, hired me for my first newspaper job and taught me vital lessons about the roles and responsibilities of professional journalists,” Neuharth said. “Those same high principles that Marilyn preached as a young college editor 65 years ago define and distinguish her extraordinary and enduring career.”

Thank you.

Black Hills Community Bank Supports Event

An appraisal is taped during the Rapid City event.

Black Hills Community Bank helped make SDPB’s involvement in the Antiques Roadshow visit this summer possible. Thank you.

Antiques Roadshow, one of the most popular programs on television, held its first-ever appraisal event in South Dakota in July. The event, at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City, drew thousands of people, who brought their treasures to be appraised.

The PBS television program, produced by WGBH Boston, will feature Rapid City and the area in three programs in 2013.

Jack Lynass, President CEO of Black Hills Community Bank believes in making a difference in the community we live in. From the outset, ”we have regarded community involvement as one of our highest priorities. With our thorough understanding of local people, local businesses and the local economy, the bank is able to offer a community banking experience that simply cannot be matched.”The bank’s support

helped SDPB offer a reception on July 13 and helped the network participate in the appraisal event on July 14.

Program funders support programs and outreach for a variety of SDPB projects. To support broadcasting that showcases South Dakota, call Ryan Howlett, Vice President of Development, at 800-456-0556.

DLR Backs Lifelong Learning ProgramsThe South Dakota Department of

Labor and Regulation is supporting SDPB programming that helps adults learn, dream and grow. Thank you.

The department’s support helps SDPB offer three programs that help adults complete their education and find work. The programs, all on SDPB1 TV, include:• GED Connection, weekdays, 5am (4

MT).• Workplace Essential Skills,

weekdays, 5:30am (4:30 MT). • TV 411, Saturdays, 4am (3 MT).All three programs are supplemented

with extensive online materials at www.fastforwardsd.org, plus Pre-GED Connection materials.

This service is free for South Dakotans. According to DLR, these are outstanding instructional and professional development

materials for GED preparation, work readiness, ESL and life skills. Skills and attitudes necessary to succeed at work are introduced; learners see how to prepare resumes and applications and how to prepare themselves for interviews and work. In-depth documentary and scripted footage shows learners what employers are looking for and how to thrive in a new job.

SDPB offers a variety of programming that contributes to lifelong learning. To support SDPB programming or to learn more, contact Ryan Howlett, Vice President of Development, at 800-456-0556.
