Sign languagefor taxi drivers

On Tuesday morning Deaf SA, Sekhukhune District Municipality, Greater TubatseMunicipality and a school for the deaf from Monsterlus, took to the taxi rank to launch adeaf awareness campaign. The group tried to teach taxi drivers and hawkers working in the area how to be aware ofthe way deaf people communicate. Simple phrases such as directions to a taxi going toSteelpoort were gestured. Some of the hawkers asked how to show that they are asking R5 for a bunch of bananas. They also distributed pamphlets with the various signs used in sign language to help thepublic learn more about this way of communication. The alphabet and other basic signswere clearly showed on it so that practice after the campaign would be easy. The day was not only educational, but ended up being great fun for everyone trying tomimic the various moves made by the sign language interpreter. Some were totally lostwhile others could after an hour of fun say that they’ve learned the basics. The group continued their campaign in other municipalities within the district.

It is with a deep sense of sadness that we make the announcement of the untimelypassing away of Phetole Frans Mohale. Mr. Mohale, who was affectionately knownas “Mateng” had his life come to a tragic end in a car accident near Schoonoord onWednesday night 8 September 2010 at about 21:00.

Utter shock and disbelief gripped those who knew him as the sad news spreadlike wild fire in Limpopo and further afield.

“Mateng” has been in business for the last 30 years. He came to Steelpoort in1981, started with a butchery, hence the nickname “Mateng” and never lookedback. He was a dedicated humble person and an organiser of various projects totheir logical conclusion. When it came to going after what he loved the most in life, that is rolling up his sleeves and drtying his hands in community activities, andachieving success, he did not take no for an answer. He sacrificed personal gain forthe benefit of others.

In singing praises in honour of “Mateng” Mohale, several milestones andbusiness achievements he attained come to the fore:

Founder member of Steelpoort Youth Congress.Chairperson of Steelpoort Civic OrganisationZonal Treasurer of ANC Sekhukhune EastMember of Sekhukhune Regional Task Team in 2002, which led to theestablishment of ANC Sekhukhune Region.

He has run a prominent construction company that successfully executedinfrastructure projects such as dams and roads both in Steelpoort and elsewhere inLimpopo.

His crowning glory came to be symbolised by his selfless dedication to thedevelopment of Nkwe Platinum from 2006 onwards. “Mateng” Mohale was anexecutive of Nkwe Platinum responsible for liaison with Limpopo’s regionalstructures of Traditional leaders, District and Local Municipalities political and civicorganisations. He was the face, anchor and pillar of Nkwe Platinum on the EasternLimb of the Bushveld Complex. He worked tirelessly to achieve the objectives of thecompany.

Nkwe has since completed a mine bankable feasibility study, and is now aboutto build a platinum mine at Garatau. This is a true home-grown mining company ofstature and a hallmark to showcase transformation In all of this, “Mateng” Mohaleas a person and his efforts, dedication and passion for Nkwe Platinum, isirreplaceable

“Mateng” is a true son of the ANC, which he has served in various capacities formore than 35 years. He was an activist and a community builder to the core. It is,without doubt, true that many an ANC young lion of yesteryear owe a significantmeasure of indebtedness to “Mateng” as a result of which, many have since risento higher positions of leadership . His capacity for self sacrifice and service to thecommunity is stuff of legend.

A bright star has been extinguished, a guiding light has been switched off. Theshoes that he leaves behind only a giant can fill. With hindsight, “Mateng” Mohaletaught us that life is too short to waste. and that we should, rather search for everyopportunity to make a difference and to celebrate life. He used to say “backwardsnever, forward ever!…or one step back in order to take a giant leap forward!” Thatwas Phetole Frans Mohale, that was “Mateng”.

The funeral service of Phetole Frans “Mateng” Mohale will start at 08:00am,Saturday the 18th September 2010 at Juventus Sports Ground, Eerstegeluk,Longtill. Amongst the speakers to pay tribute will be Acting Paramount Chief KKSekhukhune, Limpopo House of Traditional Leaders - Kgoshi Makgeru, Mayor ofTubatse Local Municipality - Cllr Ralepane Mamekoa, Executive Mayor ofSekhukhune District Municipality - Cllr Mogobo Magabe and Provincial NAFCOCPresident - Mr. Isaac Masekwameng.

Our pillar has been uprooted! The spear has fallen! Be that as it may, we areconfident that Providence will bequeath unto us a successor to “Mateng”: who willpick up the baton where “Mateng” left off. - Contributed by Fresh Lekwadu

Obituary:

Phetole Frans Mohale“We are businesspeople, not politicians”- hawkersThe Chairperson of the BurgersfortHawkers Cluster, Mr Sam Maphake, wasvery clear after a hawkers meeting in theGreater Tubatse Council Chamber onWednesday that the previous structureswere not dissolved as was claimed lastweek by Mr Jackson Tjatji who alleged thethe existing structures were corrupt at ameeting with a large group of hakers at thesame venue.

Mr Mphaka’s comittee meeting was alsowell attended and those prsent did notseem to bother temselves too much aboutlast week’s meeting. The meeting was alsoattended by representatives ogf themunicipality, such as the ELD Director, MrMH Shai under whose auspices thehawkers clusters have been established.

Although a number of hakwerscomplained that they were told not toattend the meeting as it would be unlawful,Mr Shai reacted on allegations that theother group tried to influence hawkers forpolitical gain, saying “ maybe we shouldalert the politicians to it that we have apolitical problem in town so that they cangive attention to that problem on a politicallevel”. He also explained at length what the

municipality’role is with regard to thedevelopment of the informal businesssector, and what constraints exist, such asa lack of money. He also emphasized theneed for hawkers to be registered and payhawkers fees as per the recent councilresolution.

The hakwer cluster leadership underMr Maphake reiterated to press forwardwith existing projects, working with themunicipality.

After the meeting Mr Maphake toldPlatinum Gazette that hawkers who havealready registered, must go and make suretheir names are on the list kept by thesecretary of the cluster by Monday.

The secretary’s place is at the hawkers’building accross the street from Barnetts.Within a week after Monday they hope tohave the first permits ready. He said ifsomeone is not registered, the committeemust be contacted as soon as possible. Indue course the municipality whill controllhawking in town through the permits.

He also said that the hawkers’ cluster isin an advanced stage of negotiations toestablish 44 hawkers’ stall at Twin Cityshopping centre.

10 NEWS 17 SEPTEMBER 2010

Do you think the SAPSGen. Bheki Cele, the national police chiefis serious about getting the Police Forceback into shape. He this week announced a plan that willdetermine that an officer will only receivenew uniforms every seven years. Theymay lose weight, but not gain any. “Thesedays officers need a new uniform everyyear and it is not supposed to be likethat,” he was quoted as saying. The plan is to create a fitter and fasterforce. The SAPS is aiming to by December2012 have all of their almost 200 000members’ fitness levels and body weightmeasured and recorded.Although the DA’ s Dianne KohlerBarnard warned that they might have ahard time getting the new regulationsaccepted by the unions, others haveargued that the members cannot properlydo their work when they are overweight. One such and example was when a thiefgrabbed a 59-year old man’s money onTuesday this week. The Metro Policeresponded and but could not follow theculprit when he escaped through anunderground storm water tunnel inPretoria. The members did not fit into thenarrow tunnel to follow the suspect, oneof the policemen on the scene toldnewspapers.61% of South African citizens are obese.According to a study by Added Value 74%of people think other people are obesewhile only 33% of their respondentsclassified themselves as overweight.42% of people who participated in thestudy felt that they had no need to worryabout their own health, despite theknowledge that being overweightincreases your risk for amongst othersheart disease, high blood pressure anddiabetes.About half of the people who participatedin the study felt that exercise wasnecessary for a healthy lifestyle whileonly about one fifth regularly exercised. The SAPS is currently negotiating withvarious gymnasium groups to getpackages for their members that could seethem sweat it out in the gym.We asked readers what they think aboutCele’s suggestion and how they feel theSAPS must get their men and women intoshape and should the taxpayers’ money beused to pay the gym fees?

Mr Daniel Digoro said: “They must trainhard and become fit so that they won’tneed new uniforms. They must keep fit ontheir own”.

Mnr. Pieter Steyn sê: “Genl. Bheki Cele isreg. Hulle moet dissipline deur die bankterugbring. Hulle moet verpligte PT(physical training) doen. Dis sal ookspangees bou en die polisie se moraalomkeer”.

Mr Wellington Harare said: “They shouldjoin a gym and train. Government mustsee how they can help them to getexercise”.

Mr Samuel Mndebele and Mr Fanie Matshipa said: “It is right, they must start to exercise. They must train on their own andpay for a gym themselves. Their duties require them to be fit”.

Me.

Mnr. Dolf du Toit sê: “Ek stem 100% methom saam. Hulle moet by elkepolisiestasie ‘n gym bou en dat die ouensdaar oefen voor of na hulle skof”.

Mnr Joseph Mohlala sê: “Ek stem 100%saam, maar ek lyk eintlik net soos hulle.Ek dink hulle moet ‘n halfuur voor hulleskof gaan oefen. Hulle moet by elke stasie‘n fitness instructor kry”.

Mr Tshepo Marobane said: “I think theyshould get themselves fit to be able tocatch criminals. We must go back to theold system where the police worked hard. The state must develop a fitness centrefor every cluster and get facilitators tohelp them”.

Mnr.

must (literally) shape up?

Mr Kubane Tolo said: “They need to usethe criteria that was used in the past. Most of the police in the past camethrough the army. They must move themfrom there into the police and give the fatones to the army to trim up”.

Mr Peter Molapo said: “They mustexercise regularly. They must get aninstructor at every station. Thepolicemen must be in a good condition. They will then also not look old early”.

Me.

Me. “

Mr Katlego Selahle said: “They mustexercise so that they can keep fit andslender. They must appoint a PTinstructor to help them on every shift”.

Mr Moses Mosoma said: “They must doexercise every day to be able to do properlaw enforcement and other things. Theymust have their own training centrebecause they must be able to put the jobfirst. If they go to a public gym there maybe congestion and it may not suit theirshift. They must use their own budget topay for it and not take the money from thepublic’s budget”.

Ms Dolly Kgoete said: “They must run andbe fit. They must gym and the state musthelp them pay for it”.

Mr Leboka Noto said: “They need to train.Training is a good weapon for everyone. No pain, no gain. They must put this atthe top of their bed where they can see itin the evening and in the morning.Although there is no coach, those wordswill help them to train even if they aretired. They must train themselves. Theymust start small at home and then run2.5km, 5km and so on”.

Right: Mr Mashishi Moime said: “It is agood idea of Gen. Cele. They must stopeating so much. For a policeman it isnecessary to be fit to catch the criminals. They must exercise on their own. If thestate pays there will develop no love forexercise. The state will also save money ifthey don’t have to pay gym fees”.
