AdvertorialWhat is Allergic Rhinitis?ALLERGIC RHINITIS OVERVIEWRhinitis refers to inflammation of the nasal passages. This inflammation can cause a varietyof annoying symptoms, including sneezing, itching, nasal congestion, runny nose, and post-nasal drip (the sensation that mucus is draining from the sinuses down the back of thethroat).Fortunately, the symptoms of rhinitis can usually be controlled with a combination ofenvironmental measures, medications

WHO GETS ALLERGIC RHINITIS?Allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever, affects approximately 20 percent of people of allages. Allergic rhinitis can begin at any age, although most people first develop symptoms inchildhood or young adulthood. The symptoms are often at their worst in children and inpeople in their 30s and 40s. However, the severity of symptoms tends to vary throughout life.

ALLERGIC RHINITIS CAUSESAllergic rhinitis is caused by a nasal reaction to small airborne particles called allergens. Insome people, these particles also cause reactions in the lungs (asthma) and eyes (allergicconjunctivitis). The affected cells produce inflammatory substances, including histamine, thatcause fluid to build up in the nasal tissues (congestion), itching, sneezing, and runny nose.

ALLERGIC RHINITIS SYMPTOMSThe symptoms of allergic rhinitis vary from person to person. Although the term “rhinitis”refers only to the nasal symptoms, many patients also experience problems with their eyes, throat, ears, and sleep, so it is helpful to consider the entire spectrum of symptoms.Nose: watery nasal discharge, blocked nasal passages, sneezing, nasal itching, post-nasaldrip, loss of taste, facial pressure or pain.Eyes: itchy, red eyes, feeling of grittiness in the eyes, swelling and blueness of the skinbelow the eyes.Throat and ears: sore throat, hoarse voice, congestion or popping of the ears, itching of thethroat .

ALLERGIC RHINITIS TREATMENTThe treatment of allergic rhinitis includes reducing exposure to allergens and other triggers,in combination with medication therapy. In most people, these measures effectively controlthe symptoms.Reduce exposure to triggers eg. dust, smoke, pollen and other chemicals. Severaldifferent classes of drugs counter the inflammation that causes symptoms of allergic rhinitis. Please ask your pharmacist or doctor.Medication, there are different over the counter medicine that can be used to manage thesymptoms they are found in the form of oral preparations eg. tablet and syrups while othersare used locally eg eye drops, throat spray etc. Ask your pharmacist for more professionalhelp.

Dangerous Weapons Bill - what do you think? This week the Dangerous Weapons Bill hadpeople talking. According to this bill that iscurrently open for discussion, people will notbe allowed to carry anything that is considereda dangerous weapon in a public place. This will allow the SAPS to arrest a person whois found in possession of e.g. a toy gun undersuspicious circumstances.Mr Pieter Groenewald of the FF+ was this weekquoted saying: “The bill describes a dangerousweapon as “any object” that can injure a personor put temporarily out of action. It is dangerouseven if there is only a suspicion that the objectcan injure someone.A woman who late in the evening carries pepperspray in her handbag can be arrested as shewill not be able to claim she carried it in selfdefence”.Dr Johan Burger, senior researcher at theInstitute for Security Studies however said: “Itshould not be seen as an attempt to disarmpeople. A reasonable suspicion must exist thata person is at a specific place for crime andwants to use the weapon for an illegal purpose”.We asked readers what they think of the bill.

Mnr.

Ms Ivy Ngomane said: “Sometimes you findthat you innocently work late. You find thatthere is no bread in the house and you haveto go to the shop. We women are in danger. We have to carry something to defendourselves with. I don’t have a husband todefend me and the tsotsi’s are sittingeverywhere. They’ll take my car, everything. You can get raped and get HIV infected. Imust still be able to carry something todefend myself”.

Ms Cleopatra Mateyo and Ms Salom Phiri said: “Especially pepper spray is importantfor women to defend themselves. Criminals will now go and take real guns instead oftoy guns. They are criminals and have access to other weapons. This will increasecrime. More people will get killed. Criminals will know people are afraid to carry thingsthat can be seen as against the law and cannot defend themselves”.

Mnr. Dis soos diebestuurderslisensies. Jy kan dit enige plekkoop as jy sal betaal. Wat nou van ouenswat wettige wapens het? Selfs die polisieen sekuriteitsmaatskappye gebruik pepperspray. Almal moet dieselfde behandel word.Dit gaan nie werk nie”.

Mr Gaonyatse Moroke said: “Why shouldespecially women be defendingthemselves? All dangerous weaponsshould be banned. It will reduce crimebecause many people use toy guns inrobberies. Yes, boys will be upset if toyguns are banned, but if I never gave mychild a toy gun, he will never miss it. Kidswatch their fathers and if the fathercarries a gun, the child wants one too. They follow the example of the fahers.Children must be taught”.

Mnr.

Mr Isaiah Mathebula said: “They must banweapons completely. Even the legal ones. Then we won’t have criminality. A toy caninfluence a person to want the real thing.Things that defend like pepper spray isok, but not things that kill. With defensiveitems there is no problem”.

Mnr.

Mnr. Braam Matthysen sê: “Waarmeemoet my vrou haarself beskerm? Hullemaak dit makliker vir die skelms. Pleksdat hulle eerder op die werklike misdaadkonsentreer”.

Mr Meshack Mavhunda said: “It’s 50/50.The pros and the cons are heavy on bothsides of the argument. It is good that theywant to ban the carrying of weapons toreduce crime, but on the other hand theymust think as it can also lead to increasedcrime if people are defenceless”.

Mnr.

Right: Ms Dineo Makofane said: “It will reduce criminality. They use toy guns to robpeople and this will now be prevented”.
