‘Genorahreneged on the

agreement’

A number of disgruntled community members from Ga Mpurutravelled to mining Company, Nkwe Platinum’s offices inSteelpoort on Wednesday, urging the company’s controllingshareholder, Genorah Resources to halt prospecting on the farmGaratouw, which is roughly situated between Modikwa PlatinumMine (Anglo Platinum) and Marula Platinum (Impala Platinum).Genorah also controls prospecting on four other farms adjacent toGaratouw.

The prospecting on the five farms forms part of a bankablefeasability study which should be completed before the end of theyear. After that, should mining proceed in the area, XstrataAlloys will acquire a 50 percent stake in a joint venture withNkwe Platinum.

Protesting in front of the Nkwe Platinum offices in theindustrial area in Steelpoort, the group had a memorandum readyto hand to Nkwe Platinum’s community relations manager inSteelpoort, Mr Phetole Mohale. According to the group thecompany did not keep to an agreement with the community,especially with regards to Garatouw. The group inter alia allegesthat the company is dividing the community by bribing somecommunity members, that a lot of money with regard to noisecompensation and surface rental is outstanding which should bepaid immediately. The group wants the company to suspendprospecting activities for a week and to consult and liaise with anelected coordinating committee and to recognise the communityliaison officer from within the community of Ga Ratouw.

According to the group, the company should attend to twograve sites that were allegedly demolished and destroyed by thecompany’s activities as well as an initiation school yard that wasdestroyed by the prospecting contractors. The group also want thecompany to repair access roads and other infrastructure allegedlydamaged by a contractor. Referring to previous conflict, the groupwants the company to withraw court interdicts obtained againstcertain community members.

The march and protest in front of Nkwe’s gate went quitepeacefully and Mr Mohale duly received a memorandum from thegroup, whereafter the group dispersed in front of the gate.

Mr Mohale told the newspaper that the company did nothingwrong, and that it is the community whose house is not in order.He said that the company kept to the legal requirements asadministered by the Department of Mines and Energy and thatthe company cannot be held responsible if community structures,as established by law, do not function as it should. He said thememorandum will be forwarded to the company’s headquarters.

The executive mayor of Sekhukhune District Municipality, CllrMogobo David Magabe, has announced that the district will soonspearhead the establishment of development forums that willfocus on mining and tourism.

Addressing more than 100 women during the WomenEconomic Development Summit at CN Phatudi FET College inPraktiseer near Burgersfort last week Saturday, Cllr Magabesaid that organising an Agricultural Summit for the district wasalso in the pipeline.

Magabe mentioned these initiatives on the backdrop ofSekhukhune having mining, transport, agriculture and tourismas its three main economic pillars.

The summit aimed to galvanise women of the district toexplore entrepreneurial opportunities that are on offer byinviting successful women in fields such as construction,agriculture, mining to impart their knowledge and experiences.

“We are engaging with mining houses on a regular basis topave a way for processes that seek to benefit all who live in thedistrict, the province and the country. And, as we do so, we willemerge with a strategy that will benefit our people and we aretherefore pursuing an ideal of having a Mining Forum,” Magabesaid.

A Mining Summit will take place on 09 September 2009 nearBurgersfort.

“The Tourism Forum will integrate all our tourism andheritage wealth into projects that will benefit the people of this

district,” he said. “We are also seeking to revive the spirit oftilling the land, and urge our women to start planting vegetablesin their backyards.”

Mayor Magabe also urged women to take advantage of thedistrict’s 2009/2010 budget of about R1-billion in order toorganise themselves and venture into businesses offered bygovernment.

“Through phase 2 of the Expanded Public Works Programme(EPWP), we envisage that more women will be empowered byacquiring the necessary skills while making a living anddeveloping our communities,” he said.

The executive mayor encouraged the women to take keeninterest in developments on the R9 billion De Hoop Dam that isunder construction in Ga-Malekane near Burgersfort because itoffers vast business opportunities.

Magabe said that the municipality has resolved to effect aturn-around strategy in as far as the awarding of tenders in time,payment of contractors and signing of certificates for contractorswere concerned. Mayor Magabe said government had shown itsseriousness about turning rural areas like Sekhukhune intothriving centres of development by creating the RuralDevelopment Ministry. “I must emphasise that womenempowerment is not about elite, urban and township women. Weneed to impact positively on the lives of thousands of ordinarywomen in our district,” Magabe said.

The summit was concluded with a gala dinner.

The Greater Tubatse Municipality has joined the rest of the country in celebratingWomen’s month.

The Municipality held Women’s Day celebration at Mošate of Ga-KgosigadiKgwete, Ga-Kgwete village on Wednesday 26 August 2009, under the theme “Basadi,Mmogo re ka kgona”.

The event brought together more than two hundred local women who wereencouraged to work together to create jobs through exploring domestic tourismopportunities. Issues of HIV/Aids and Rural Development were also highlighted.

The first Lady of Greater Tubatse Municipality, Mme Borelelo Mamekoa, saidwomen should continue to work hard to make the world a better place. MmeMamekoa said August is a month to remember the role played by women during thestruggle, especially those women who marched against pass laws in 1956 to theUnion Buildings. She said the spirit of togetherness presented by the 1956 womenshould continue amongst the women of today to achieve more.

Mme Mamekoa also called upon women to support each other, believe in oneanother’s leadership skills and potential. She said she appreciated the victory ofCaster Mokgadi Semenya, the gold medallist. “Semenya has made South Africaproud by becoming the world’s top athlete during the 2009 Wold AtheleticsChampionship which took place in Berlin, Germany. The alleged reports that Casteris not a woman were unnecessary and very much unacceptable”.

ATM ‘RIP’The ABSA ATM in Ohrigstad was brown to pieces by robbersattempting to get the money inside. Platinum Gazette reported onthe story last week. According to residents the noise of the blastwoke some of them at about 02:00 last week Thursday morning.Small pieces of money could still be found at the scene whenPlatinum Gazette took this photograph.

The police arrested three suspects agedbetween 46 years and 20 years inconnection with copper theft. Thishappened after the police receivedinformation about a white Toyota bakkiethat was transporting copper cable wirefrom Acornhoek to Burgersfort.The bakkie was spotted by police onpatrol. They stopped and searched it. Nocopper cable was found in the bakkie.The SAPS then interrogated the threeoccupants of the bakkie until one of themagreed to show them where the cable hadbeen stored. He took the police to a houseat Ga-Moraba village, where the coppercables were found and four bags full ofcopper wire were recovered.The three suspects were arrested andthey appeared at the Leboeng Periodicalcourt on Tuesday 25 August. They werecharged with possession of stolenproperty and were given bail of R500each. The case was postponed to 29September 2009.

He must appear in courtagain on 18 September.* In another case the SAPS arrested a 33-year old man whoallegedly robbed a 13-year old boy of his cellphone. The incidenthappened at Dark City, Praktiseer.The suspect appeared in the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court on 24August and was granted bail of R1000. He will appear in courtagain on 29 September.

In court on charges of rapeOn 23 August the police in Tubatse arrested a 35-year old manfor rape.It is alleged that the suspect raped a 21-years old woman inBothashoek on 22 August 2009.The suspect appeared in the Praktiseer Magistrate’s court on 24August 2009 and he was not granted bail. The case wasremanded to 26 August 2009.

Assaulted with a brickOn 22 August 2009 the police in Tubatse arrested a femalesuspect of 43 years for assault with the purpose to inflictgrievous bodily harm.The arrest follows the crime that occurred at Ga-Madiseng on 19August 2009. The suspect allegedly assaulted a female of 30years with a brick.The suspect appeared in the Praktiseer Magistrate’s court on 24August 2009 and she was released with a warning. The case wasremanded to 6 October 2009.

Do you now go with the (better?) flow?Road works seem to be a never ending partof life in Burgersfort. Upgrading of theR37 is still continuing. Speed humps wereinstalled and later dug up again to bereduced in height. The ‘great wall’ ofBurgersfort was constructed to restrictillegal crossings and now robots are beinginstalled.We asked readers whether they can feelthe difference that the upgrading hascreated so far, and whether they feel thetraffic lights will be the cherry on top toensure a smooth ride through town.

Right: Mr MCJ Serokolo said: “I think it’sbetter, although Burgersfort is challengedwith traffic problems. I think it is becausethe town was not prepared for this hugeand quick development.”

Fun in the sun for charityThe Miss Spring Burgersfort 2009 finalists will be hosting a FunDay on Saturday 29 August at the OK Minimark. All the fundsraised during this day will be going towards charity.The day will be filled with fun and activities for everyone. Therewill be a flee market with various stalls. Vehicle exhibitions,jumping castles, face painting, a chance to meet Buddy from theOK (shown below), paint ball, a free wine tasting hosted by theKaapse Kelders and a jail-a-bail event.This event will see well known personalities ‘jailed’ for charity.The idea is that they and the community raise as much money aspossible in aid of charity. All the ‘bail’ money will be donated tocharity.
