Ward 27 iincludes the Ga-Malekane area in the vicinity of the steel bridge next to the R555 between Steelpoort and the De Hoop Dam. The vacancy in the ward ocurred after the Ward Councillor, Khukhunana Martha Magapa of the ANC passed away. In 2011’s local government election she united 74,69 % of the votes to win for the ANC. When Platinum Gazette visited some of the voting stations on Wednesday, voting appeared brisk, but only about 23 % of the 4123 registered voters in the ward participated in the democratic process through the day. The official IEC figures (below) confirm that the ANC remains the undisputed choice of voters in the ward. It is alleged that the 20-year-old grabbed his girlfriend while they were on their way to school and dragged het into the nearby bushes. According to the Police he stabbed her in the neck and body with an unkown object. It is alleged that the boy killed the girl because she wasi not interested in the relationship any more. The matter was reported to Tubatse Police and a case of murder and an inquest were opened. Tragedy An effort will be made to limit job losses in the platinum mining sector, the government, labour unions and mining houses announced on Wednesday. The three sectors agreed that all measures to support the industry would be explored before retrenchments, according to a joint statement issued by the Department of Mineral Resources. They agreed that other ways of cutting costs without reducing safety and health standards should be found, as well as seeking other ways to improve the demand for platinum. Another measure included adding value domestically to platinum before exporting it. The platinum mining industry has been confronted with falling prices as a result of weakening global demand for the metal. Last month Anglo American Platinum advised unions it wanted to cut 725 jobs, while Lonmin had slashed capital expenditure plans. Effort to save platinum jobs

Maroga Metal Recovery Plant has beenin operation since 2007. One of theircontributions to the local community waswhen they handed over computers togetherwith ASA Metals to Maboeletse PrimarySchool and Ikageng Babiramogo HomeBase Centre in Ga-Maroga last week Friday.

Representatives from Maroga MetalRecovery Plant, ASA Metals and the PulanaMaroga Community Trust were warmlywelcomed by Maboeletse Primary Schoolprincipal Ms MJ Sasa. The handoverceremony was opened with prayer done byMr. Moeng and a song by the MaboeletsePrimary School Choir. The song was one ofgratitude and appreciation to say thank youfor the opportunity they were given as beingpart of learning acoording to national andinternational standards.

After the ceremony all the childrenreceived a lunch box which. Mr AdolphMunyai (Deputy CEO – Services) from ASAMetals / Dilokong Chrome Mine believes thisis the road of greater things to come andthat the community structures as well asorganised business still has a long road togo to alleviate community poverty andunemployment. He said it is achievable inthe long run if all parties work together andexercise the necessary patience.

Dilokong Mineworkers on strike

Workers belonging tothe National Union ofMineworkers (NUM)employed at AASAMetals/Dilokong Minewent on strike onMonday this week.About 350 workers areon strike and theydon’t include workersfor the smelter orcontractors. The maindispute is minimumwages and living outsubsidies. Negotiationsbroke down onTuesday and by thetime of going to printthe strike was still on.

Mototolo Platinum Mine held a First Aidcompetition on 25 and 26 July.Each team consisted of five members andteams came from Borwa and Lebowa shafts.Each team had a captain and a ‘casualty’. Eachof these employees had to attend the 20hourstraining required. This was provided by StJohns Ambulance Service. Only employeeswho completed the trainingcould enter the competition.Twenty seven teamscompleted their training andmoved into the competition.The first round of the teamcompetition started withindividual assessment toobtain a full level one first aidcertificate that is valid forthree years. Then the teamcompetition started. The topthree teams were selected ona score system. In thissection of the competitionteams had to assesssituations and actaccordingly. To makeeverything as realistic aspossible injuries werecreated with first aid make-up - much like in the movies.The First Aid team winnerswere the Pink Berets fromLebowa shaft. They receiveda floating trophy for theirperformance. Rudi Mulderreceived the floating trophy

for the best individual performer. Thiscompetition was a first for Mototolo Mine butwill be hosted every year in future. This will aimto highlight employees’ first aid abilities in theworkplace and increase the level of safety andfirst aid awareness in general. Mototolo Minehas also extended a challenge to neighbouringmines to join them for the 2013 competition.

The eventtook place at Batau High School.The youth from Mmiditse High School hasalways been very involved with the Phelo PeleFoundation and once again contributed towardsthe success of the day. them involved in the mainstream economy. Italso aims to help with skills developmentthrough training and education. They aim torender a comprehensive social service to the
