Law enforcement authorities in and around

Burgersfort went big this week Wednesday

when a large scale crima combatting

operation was held. A number of residents

at first thought that something was seriously

wrong, judged by the omni presence of law

    enforcement personnel, vehicles and even

mounted Police on horses and motorcycles.

Soon it was evident that if you are law

abidin, nothing was to be feared and

everyone could go on with their daily

    business as usual.

Station Commander of Burgersfort PoliceStation, Colonel Ronnie Van Niekerk, told

the newspaper the operation was held under

the command of the Deputy Provincial

    Commissioner: Operations in Limpopo,

    Major General Benny Ntlemeza. The

    operation was a multi-phased operation

where units of the South African Police

Service joined hands with the Provincial-

and Municipal Traffic departments and the

Immigration office of the Department of

Home Affairs to execute roadblocks and

    stop- and search actions.

The Police Mounted Unit could be seen

patrolling the streets on horseback whilst a

Police Air Wing helicopter (the white one

seen all over town on Wednesday) coveredthe action from the air. Specialists from the

    Vehicle Identification Section, Detectives,

    Tactical Response Unit, Public Order

Policing Unit, Dog Unit, Flying Squad,

Motorcycle Unit and Visible Policing Unit

    participated in the action.

    Vehicles and individuals were searched

    for illegal firearms, dangerous weapons,

drugs, stolen property and illegal foreigners.

    Successes achieved included two arrests

for the possession of dagga, one arrest for

the possession of a dangerous weapon, one

    arrest for possession of home-manufactured

alcoholic concoction, one arrest for the

    possession of counterfeit DVDs, six

foreigners arrested for not having valid

    immigration documents and several traffic

    summonses issued for traffic offences.

A total of 14 taxis were impounded fornot having valid operating licenses, another

five vehicles confiscated on suspicion of

being stolen, 30g dagga confiscated, one

knife and 97 counterfeit DVDs were

confiscated. Colonel Van Niekerk says this

operation is the first of more to come in an

attempt to clamp down on criminality and

lawlessness in Burgersfort and to flush out

    criminals.

    More to come ...

    We will flush out the

    criminals - Police

Rural development is one of the major available tools that canbe used to eradicate the scourge of underdevelopment and

backwardness. The Millennium Development Goals 2014 are

achievable only if we work together with our communities said

the Executive Mayor of Sekhukhune District Municipality, Cllr

Mogobo David Magabe on Friday last week He addressed a

community meeting which was attended by nearly 500, handing

over to a contractor and a consultant who will complete the

Mokgotho Achaar Manufacturing Factory near Penge. Phase one

of this project was completed the previous financial year with the

completion of the following: Fencing worth R29809, borehole

drilling worth R196555, electricity connection worth R37498, and

an achaar making machine worth R259122 (stored at the

manufacturer site awaiting the completion of the building).

The contractor will commence with the construction of a136

square meter building for the processing of mangos for achaar

production. The building will comprise of the following: Factory

floor, store room, reception area, office, change rooms and

toilets. The total cost of this project which is a direct investment

by Sekhukhune District Municipality is R1,645 million.

The mayor further said We are expecting this project to be

completed after two to three months so that our people can begin

to benefit from it. And we are hopeful that we will not experience

any hindrances towards the achievement of this goal. Already our

target is to benefit 45 people from this project and our hope is

that harmony and peace will reign among members of the

community and the entire leadership collective so that we can

    realise our objectives.

Draft legislation in South Africa will make it

illegal for parents to spank their children if itgets approved. If a husband beats a wife, it

is a crime, but if a parent hits a child who ishelpless, its not illegal, Social DevelopmentMinister Bathabile Dlamini told the press.Parents using a flat hand on a childs bottom

or enact any other form of corporalpunishment at home will be charged withassault.

The results of the 2012 National School

Violence Study was released this week. Itshows KwaZulu-Natal as the province withthe highest rate of corporal bunishment inschools. It states that caning, slapping, punching and other means of physical abuse

increased from 48.7% in 2008 to 73.7% lastyear. A statement issued by the SA HumanRights Commission suggests that reported

cases often went beyond the definition ofcorporal punishment, with some children leftseverely humiliated, grievously injured,

disabled or even dead as a result of injuries. We asked readers what they think about thedraft law and how it will influence the wayparents discipline their children.

Mr Morgan Mafologela said: Children nowsay they have their own rights. Parents mustbe able to beat them as punishment. Nowchildren keep themselves busy with badthings. If they allow corporal punishment

children will know they will get beaten andwont do bad things.

Mr Mojalefa Ntsoana said: I think it is a goodthing to keep corporal punishment. Kids must

know their rights, but now if you even talkharshly, they want to call the police. They

must not take away the parents right to usecorporal punishment. There is a differencebetween assault and just a good spanking.

Mr Frans Malapane said: Children should bedisciplined. According to our culture childrenmust listen and if they dont listen we use thesjambok. That is the only way. If you dontdiscipline them the new generation will be a

nation with problems. I dont support that newlaw.

Mr Nicho Tebele and Ms Brenda Mokoena said: At home you mustbe able to beat them a little bit. Not too much. Show them you are the

parent. Just whip them a little bit.

Mr Juda Mohubedu and Mr Moses Komane said: When a child isnaughty sit down and explain to them why certain things are wrong. It

is not good to beat them.

Mr Aubrey Mmola said: We must beat them

to teach them a lesson, otherwise they do

whatever they want. We must teach them torespect each other. Now they will no longerlisten.

Should parents be allowed to spank

Mr Marumo Mabokwane said: It will

encourage children to disrespect theirparents. Spanking them does not meankilling them. Later when the children are out

of order government will not be able to

control them. The government should notinterfere with the way people raise their ownchildren because what they are doing withthe aim of protecting the children ends upspoiling the same children. E.g. the abolitionof corporal punishment in schools. Most ofthe learners are out of control because of

    this.

Ms Annikie Marule, Mr Mtaburuka Mhlongo and Mr Lucky Mpumi Mathebula said: You mustnot beat a child. When you beat him or her you will make them do more of the things theywere doing wrong. Discipline them by mouth. By beating children you will cause them to losetheir minds. Also pray for them.

Mr Dumisa Madalane and Mr Mahlatse Ntoana (left and middle) said: When you look at the

rights of children, it says that they need to stay in a safe place. It binds everywhere, not onlyat school. This law will be good. We support it 100%. Mr Collin Dlamini said: Our kids are nolonger controlable because you cant do anything then they talk harassment. Sometimeschildren misuse their rights.

Ms Promise Selepe and Mr Petunia Selepe said: It is a good thing to

punish a child. Parents must just find other ways to punish theirchildren - not by beating them. Talk to the child nicely. If you shout at

    children they dont listen.

Mnr.

    medisyne.

Mr Lovemore Hatlane said: Change means

growth. It will be good to have this law. Thechildren will have less injuries and will beable to grow nicely. They will be living in a

healthy and safe environment. Punishment isnot healthy. Children are like plants. If youtake care of them they grow. People seekunderstanding. Use talking as a method to

    instill discipline.

Mnr. Johann Lategan s: Dis onregverdig.Hoekom kon my pa my pakgee? Daar is niksfout met my nie. Daar is n verskil tussen npakslae en aanranding. Kinders salheeltemal hand uit ruk. Kyk hoe gaan hullereeds tekere in die skole waar hulle detensiemoet sit. Daar is nou soveel dwelms en

anders misdaadsake in skole. By hom isElouise.

Mr Karim Dadie said: A child needs

discipline by spanking them with the palm ofthe hand. You cannot take that away fromthe parent. Children will grow up to bedisciplined adults if they are properly

    disciplined when they are young.

Mr Ben Langa said: Parents must be

allowed to spank their children, but theremust be limits. If you do it with love, there isno problem, but some people beat thembeyond the limit of love. In the end childrenwill understand why they were disciplined

that way. Now we will have more criminalsand rapists. When we beat them, we preparethem for adulthood.

Right: Mr Sipho Hlakudi said: Corporalpunishment must not be allowed because

beating the flesh doesnt change the realperson inside. It only makes them worse. Asparents we should lead by example.

Links: Mnr. Rudi van der Merwe s: As jykyk na die jeug se gedragskode van vandag

sal dit hulle net aanhits om geen dissipline teh nie. n Goeie pakslae op sy tyd iskosbaar.
